Per Merano la ricerca del benessere è uno stile di vita figlio di un’eredità storica. Nella prima metà del XIX secolo il
dottor Johann Nepomuk Huber, giunto a Merano a seguito
della nobildonna viennese Mathilde von Schwarzenberg,
scrisse un libretto in cui decantava le virtù terapeutiche della città, celebrando fra le altre la cura al siero di latte e quella dell’uva. Sempre più ospiti cominciarono a soggiornare
a Merano, e nel 1870 arrivò l’imperatrice Sissi con la sua figlioletta Valerie. Anche Franz Kafka cercò qui benefici per la
sua salute. Nel solco di questa tradizione, Merano oggi si è
evoluta in luogo di benessere dove la salute va a braccetto
con il piacere. Benessere inteso nel suo significato più ampio, fisico ma anche spirituale in un ambiente dalla florida
vegetazione, dal clima mite, dall’incessante contatto con
la natura, dalle acque pure. A proposito di acqua: in pieno

centro, sulla sponda sinistra del Passirio, è stato realizzato
un terrazzamento che annulla il distacco tra il fiume e chi
desidera viverlo, ascoltando il suo fluire direttamente sulla
riva. Rimanendo in tema “acquatico”: d’estate si può optare
per un rinfrescante tuffo nelle vasche del lido, in inverno
nella piscina coperta Meranarena, tutto l’anno nel variegato mondo delle Terme Merano, caratterizzate dal cubo
di vetro disegnato dal celebre architetto Matteo Thun. In
8.000 m2 sono a disposizione 15 piscine interne ed esterne
aperte tutto l’anno, 10 nel parco (aperto solo in estate), un
ampio reparto sauna, un centro fitness e il moderno “Spa &
Vital Center” dove recitano da protagonisti i prodotti naturali altoatesini come la mela, il fieno, il siero di latte, le
erbe. Inoltre la maggioranza degli hotel meranesi è dotata
di confortevoli reparti dedicati al wellness e al relax.
For Merano, the search for well-being is a lifestyle born of
a rich history. In the first half of the 19th century, Dr Johann
Nepomuk Huber travelled to Merano as personal physician
to the Viennese noblewoman Mathilde von Schwarzenberg,
and wrote a brochure extolling the therapeutic virtues of the
city while also celebrating its whey and grape cures. More
and more guests began to stay in Merano, and in 1870 the
Empress Sissi arrived with her little daughter Valerie. Franz
Kafka too sought to improve his health here. Following on
from this tradition, Merano today has evolved into an oasis
of well-being, where health goes hand-in-hand with pleasure. Well-being in its wider, physical meaning, but also in
the spiritual sense, in an ambience of abundant vegetation,
with a mild climate, constant contact with nature, and pure
waters. On the subject of water, the city centre now boasts
terracing on the left bank of the River Passirio that allows
direct access to those wishing to experience the river and
listen to it flowing past. And, speaking of matters “aquatic”,
in summer you can take a refreshing dip in the pools of the
Lido, while in winter there is the indoor Meranarena pool,
as well as the all-year round variety of the Terme Merano,
characterised by the cube of glass designed by famous architect Matteo Thun. Covering an area of 8,000 m2, there
are 15 in- and outdoor pools open troughout the year, with
10 more pools in the park (open only in summer), an extensive sauna area, a fitness centre and the modern “Spa &
Vital Center”, where you can enjoy applications based on
natural South Tyrolean products such as apples, hay, whey
and herbs. Most hotels in Merano also offer comfortable facilities dedicated to wellness and relaxation.

Chi ama camminare, imparerà ad amare Merano. La
rete di passeggiate che irradia la città invita a tranquille
camminate e a pause ristoratrici. Il titolo di “città giardino” è merito del verde che brilla nei numerosi parchi
e delle sculture naturali che puntellano i percorsi, come
il tratto centrale della Passeggiata lungo il fiume Passirio (“Kurpromenade”) o la romantica Passeggiata Gilf
(con i versi dei poeti incisi sulle panchine) che serpeggiando si congiunge alla Passeggiata Tappeiner: a 380
metri di altezza, tre chilometri di belvedere sull’intera
conca meranese. Scorci spettacolari si catturano pure
lungo i “Waalweg”, i placidi sentieri che costeggiano
antichi canali realizzati per irrigare le vigne e i frutteti: il nuovo circuito dei “Sentieri d’Acqua Meranesi”
(“Waalwegrunde”) abbraccia il bacino vallivo di Merano

e permette di passeggiare intorno all’area della città in
11 tappe lungo un sentiero di 80 chilometri. In omaggio alla passione di Sissi per le passeggiate, invece, un
tracciato a lei intitolato unisce il centro storico a Castel
Trauttmansdorff dove l’imperatrice d’Austria soggiornava, attraverso residenze vestite d’edera e silenziosi
manieri. Gli animi più sportivi trovano invece terreno
fertile sulle vette che circondano la città, raggiungibili velocemente con i vari impianti di risalita. L’Alta Via
Meranese è un circuito di 80 chilometri che si sviluppa
a quota 3.000 metri nel meraviglioso scenario del Parco Naturale del Tessa, percorribile in sette-otto tappe
giornaliere. Mentre Merano 2000 (dotato della nuova,
avveniristica funivia) è comprensorio sciistico d’inverno
che, tutto l’anno, è un eden per gli escursionisti.
Walkers will learn to love Merano. The network of paths
in and around the city offers quiet walks and refreshing
breaks. Called the “garden city”, its name is fully merited on account of the greenery that thrives in the many
parks and the natural sculptures along the routes, from
the central promenade along the River Passirio (the
“Kurpromenade”), or the romantic Gilf walk, its benches
inscribed with poetic stanzas, that links up with the Tappeiner walk: from a height of 380 metres, this 3-km route
gives you a panorama over the bowl in which Merano
lies. There are also spectacular views to be had along the
“Waalwege”, the quiet paths along the ancient channels
that are still used to irrigate the vineyards and orchards
dotting the landscape. Merano’s new circuit of footways
along these watercourses (the “Waalwegrunde”) encom-
passes the valley bowl and allows walkers to cover the
area of the city on 11 routes along a trail totalling 80 km in
length. As a tribute to Sissi’s passion for walking, a route
named after her links the city centre to Trauttmansdorff
Castle (a former residence of the Austrian Empress),
leading past ivy-covered residences and silent estates.
Those wanting more of a challenge will find fertile ground
on the mountain summits surrounding the city, which
can also easily be reached via the various lift systems.
The Alta Via Meranese (Merano high-level route) is an
80-km circuit that reaches a height of 3,000 metres in
the wonderful scenery of the Tessa Group Nature Park,
and can be completed in 7-8 days. Merano 2000, with
its new, futuristic cabin lift, is a ski area in winter and a
walker’s paradise all year round.

Le opportunità per un soggiorno sportivo a Merano soddisfano chiunque. Se il vostro tempo libero corre spesso
e volentieri dietro a una piccola pallina bianca, alle porte
della città ecco pronti due splendidi circoli per golfisti:
tra i frutteti al Brandis di Lana (9 buche), a un quarto d’ora
d’auto, o cinque minuti di viaggio in più per raggiungere il
Golfclub Val Passiria (18 buche) nello scenario della vallata
solcata dal torrente Passirio. In centro città gli appassionati
della racchetta possono contare sui campi in terra rossa
e i terreni indoor del Tennis Club. Il circolo confina con
l’ippodromo, quaranta ettari dove dal 1935 si celebra il
Gran Premio Merano Forst, spettacolare gara a ostacoli
che rappresenta l’apice della stagione di corse. Cavalli da
ammirare, ma anche da cavalcare: le possibilità sono diver-

se, tra prati e boschi dei dintorni. Dalla sella al sellino, la
bicicletta è mezzo ideale per visitare il Meranese, magari
con le bici a noleggio gratuito. Il centro è servito da un fitto
tessuto di piste ciclabili che si inoltra oltre i confini cittadini. Invitante l’offerta “bici+treno”: in carrozza si sale
lungo la Val Venosta, si scende pedalando su una comoda
pista ciclabile. I più atletici hanno inoltre a disposizione vari
sentieri per puntare alle cime in mountain bike. L’inverno
è naturalmente candeggiato dalla neve. I diversi comprensori – primo fra tutti Merano 2000 e i suoi 40 chilometri di
piste, alle quali dalla città si approda in un batter d’occhio
grazie alla nuova funivia – garantiscono offerte per tutta la
famiglia: sugli sci per discese, fondo e snowboard, con le
slitte o con i bastoncini da nordic walking.
Whatever your favourite sport, Merano has something
to offer. If golf is your preference, there are two splendid
locations for golfers just outside the city: a 9-hole course
situated among orchards at Brandis near Lana, 15 minutes away by car, and the Golfclub Val Passiria (18 holes)
located in the scenic Passirio valley, a drive of some 20
minutes. In the city centre, tennis fans have a choice
of clay or indoor courts at the Tennis Club. There is
also the racecourse, covering an area of forty hectares
where, since 1935, the Grand Prix Merano Forst has
been run, a spectacular steeplechase that represents
the pinnacle of the racing season. These horses are to
be admired, but there are also endless possibilities for
riding, with excursions among the meadows and forests
around the city. From saddleback to saddle: cycling is
an ideal way to discover Merano, with free bike hire also
available. The city centre boasts a large network of cycle paths that extends into the surrounding countryside.
There is also the inviting “bici+treno” (bike+train) offer:
travel by train along the Val Venosta, then pedal back
home along a gentle cycle route. More athletic types can
attempt the various mountain bike routes leading up
to the summits. Winter naturally offers plenty of snow,
with the various ski areas – first and foremost Merano
2000, with its 40 kilometres of pistes and rapid access
via the new cable car facility – offering something for all
the family, whether downhill and cross-country skiing,
snowboarding, tobogganing or Nordic walking.

Il calendario meranese è per tradizione un susseguirsi
di manifestazioni. Intorno al 1900, quando la città divenne località di soggiorno tra le più rinomate d’Europa, il Kurhaus era già elegante cornice di eventi. Oggi
ospita congressi, esposizioni, balli, anche e soprattutto
concerti tra cui quelli delle Settimane Musicali Meranesi, festival di musica classica con orchestre e direttori di spessore internazionale. Alcuni dei castelli che
troneggiano sulla città sono invece stati riconvertiti
in musei. Un esempio è Castel Tirolo, antica residenza
dei conti del Tirolo, sede del museo storico-culturale
della provincia. Nelle sale di Castel Trauttmansdorff si
racconta invece l’evoluzione del turismo in Alto Adige.
Attorno al maniero si distende un Giardino dove prosperano 80 diversi ambienti botanici. Percorsi attra-

verso la storia, in questo caso al femminile, si possono
compiere al Museo delle Donne, mentre espressione
della cultura contemporanea è Merano arte dove si avvicendano emergenti autori locali e firme celebri. Per
respirare la tradizione le occasioni più adatte sono le
corse rusticane dei cavalli Haflinger, all’ippodromo, e
la Festa dell’Uva, inno ai costumi e alle usanze del luogo. Se invece si pensa alla tavola allora ci si indirizza
sul “Törggelen”, merenda-rito d’autunno con prodotti
tipici, speck e formaggio e vino. A proposito di vino:
il Merano WineFestival è un viaggio alla scoperta del
meglio dell’enologia nazionale e mondiale. Si svolge a
inizio novembre e apre la strada alla magia sprigionata
dai Mercatini di Natale, atmosfere da fiaba che ammantano l’Avvento meranese.
The Merano calendar is, by tradition, one long series of
events. Around 1900, when the city was becoming one
of Europe’s most celebrated resorts, the Kurhaus was
already an elegant venue. Today it hosts conferences,
exhibitions, dances, but above all concerts, including
the Merano Music Weeks, a festival of classical music
with orchestras and directors of international renown.
Some of the castles that stand above the city have also
been converted into museums. One example is Castle
Tyrol, the former residence of the Counts of Tyrol, now
home to the province’s historical and cultural museum;
another is Trauttmansdorff Castle, which relates the
story of the development of tourism in South Tyrol and
is surrounded by its gardens featuring some 80 different
botanical environments. The Women’s Museum offers a
female perspective on history, while contemporary culture can be found in Merano arte where emerging local
artists alternate with famous names. For a deeper experience of tradition, visit the Haflinger horse races at the
racecourse or the Grape Festival, a celebration of local
ways and customs. If instead you are more interested in
the culinary arts, do not miss out on “Törggelen”, the
autumn ritual of eating and drinking that features local
products such as speck, cheese and wine. And, on the
subject of wine, the Merano WineFestival is a voyage of
discovery that offers the best of Italian and world wines.
It occurs at the beginning of November and leads on to
the magical Advent season with its wonderful Christmas markets that, for more than 20 years now, have
characterised Christmas in Merano.

Un po’ ovunque a Merano si respirano storia e architettura. Succede in particolare lungo i Portici, il cuore della città, corridoio commerciale di 400 metri voluto da
Mainardo II nel 13° secolo. Oggi l’occhio cade soprattutto
sulle vetrine dei negozi e delle boutique, chiare espressioni di artigianato tipico, specialità gastronomiche ma
anche di firme della moda. I negozi moderni alloggiano
in antiche mura, affacciano su nascosti cortili interni e si
raggiungono percorrendo scalinate e passaggi. All’estremo superiore dei Portici si innalza il duomo di San Nicolò, patrono della città. La storia aleggia anche sulle rive
del Passirio dove nel verde della Passeggiata d’Estate
dimora la statua dell’Imperatrice d’Austria Elisabetta
(Sissi), omaggio all’icona della tradizione turistica meranese. Animata da frequentazioni di sangue blu, Merano

divenne meta di soggiorni di diversi artisti e intellettuali,
fra cui i compositori Richard Strauss e Giacomo Puccini – a quest’ultimo è intitolato il teatro, palcoscenico di
mondanità alla pari del Kurhaus. La vocazione della città
all’arte e al bello si ritrova anche a tavola, dove l’identità di territorio di confine tra area germanica e italiana
si traduce nella compresenza di cucina tirolese e mediterranea, nonché nell’alternanza di locali dove l’aria
profuma del legno delle stube e di ristoranti dai tratti
più moderni e cosmopoliti. Vetrina di alta gastronomia
è “Stelle, castelli, malghe”, rassegna in cui cinque chef
stellati sono protagonisti di serate e autori di pietanze
riproposte nelle malghe. E poi il vino: l’antica tradizione
vitivinicola dell’Alto Adige si riflette in un ampia varietà
e indiscutibile qualità nel bicchiere.
Just about everywhere in Merano is steeped in art and history. This is particularly noticeable along the Portici, the heart
of the city: this is a street lined with rows of shops, 400 metres long, that dates back to Mainardo II and the 13th century.
Today the eye is above all caught by the display windows of
the stores and boutiques, offering local handicrafts, gastronomic specialties and the latest fashions. Modern stores
are housed between ancient walls, looking out over hidden
inner courtyards and linked by stairs and passageways. At the
top end of the Portici rises the Cathedral of Saint Nicolò,
the city’s patron saint. History is also present along the
banks of the River Passirio where, surrounded by the green
of the Summer Promenade, can be found the statue of the
Austrian Empress Elisabeth (Sissi), a homage to the icon of
Merano’s tourist tradition. With its numerous noble visitors,
Merano also became a popular destination for various artists
and intellectuals, including the composers Richard Strauss
and Giacomo Puccini, after whom is named the city theatre,
a stage for events of international renown that place it on a
par with the Kurhaus. The city’s dedication to the arts and
beauty can also be found in its cuisine, with its location on
the border between the Germanic and the Italian worlds reflected in the combination of Tyrolean and Mediterranean
cookery, as well as the choice of premises ranging from traditional Stuben with wood-burning stoves to ultra-modern,
cosmopolitan restaurants. Another gastronomic stage is
represented by “Stars, Castles and Mountain Pastures”,
where five star chefs show off their culinary skills at various
evening events, offering up gourmet cooking in mountain
huts. And there is of course the wine: the ancient wine-growing tradition of South Tyrol can be seen in the wide range and
unquestionable quality of the products.

Oggigiorno i viaggiatori si mettono alla ricerca di ristoranti con
i loro smartphone, twittano dritte e consigli e mostrano ai loro
amici su Facebook le foto delle vacanze. Con le loro valutazioni
sui portali on-line i turisti influenzano l’umore di albergatori e
ristoratori in tempo reale: non esistono più 365 giorni di sole. In
questa mostra, il Touriseum illustra le profonde trasformazioni
intercorse per viaggiatori e popolazione ospitante nell’area
vacanze Alto Adige dall’apertura del museo nel 2003.
Travellers can nowadays use their smartphones to look for
restaurants, tweet their top tips and let their friends see their
holiday snaps on Facebook. Online portals allow guests to rate
the hotels and restaurants they visit in real time – much to
the chagrin of the proprietors, who are no longer able to claim
the sun shines all year round. This exhibition at the Touriseum
illustrates the profound changes that have affected travellers
and locals alike in the holiday land of South Tyrol since the
museum’s opening in 2003.

Un romantico trasognato alla ricerca delle sue radici, un’imperatrice che non ne poteva più di stare a casa, la sua figlia cagionevole di salute, un imperatore alla ricerca della sua imperatrice, un guerriero al servizio degli Asburgo, un barone tedesco
innamorato pazzo di Merano, veterani di guerra impiegati come
contadini: hanno tutti alloggiato, per breve o lungo tempo, a
Castel Trauttmansdorff, segnando così il corso della sua storia
fino a oggi. La nuova mostra permanente nelle stanze storiche
del castello dedica a ognuno dei suoi illustri inquilini un luminoso monumento.
A dreamy romantic in search of his roots; an Empress who
could not bear life at home; her sickly daughter; an Emperor
in search of his Empress; an old warhorse in the service of the
Habsburgs; a German baron infatuated with Merano; war veterans who took up farming. They all stayed at Trauttmansdorff
Castle for various lengths of time, influencing its place in history right up until the present day. The new permanent exhibition
in the historic rooms of the castle dedicates a shining monument to each of these illustrious inhabitants.

Che oggetti colleziona il Touriseum? Che dimensioni ha la sua
raccolta? Come arrivano gli oggetti al Touriseum e cosa accade
loro all’interno del museo? I visitatori troveranno risposta a
queste domande nel “Peepshow degli oggetti”. Nell’ambito
dell’iniziativa a livello provinciale “Anno degli oggetti museali”,
il Touriseum mostra, sulla scorta di esempi particolari, che gli
oggetti esposti sono solo una piccola parte della collezione del
museo. Di essa i visitatori ottengono un rapido assaggio. Inoltre
possono comprendere quali oggetti sono interessanti per un
museo del turismo e che tipo di lavoro si nasconde dietro le
attività di collezione e conservazione.
What sort of objects does the Touriseum collect? How large is
its collection? How do the objects come to the Touriseum and
what happens to them once they get there? Visitors can find the
answers to these and other questions in the “Objects Peepshow”:
as part of the “Year of the Object” in South Tyrol, the Touriseum
will be using specially selected examples to show that the objects on display are just a fraction of its total inventory, thereby
giving visitors a glimpse of its collection. They will also learn
what objects are of interest to a museum of tourism and what is
involved in collecting and keeping the museum objects.

Hygiene and beauty have been of importance for thousands of
years. An important aspect in the cultural history of humanity is
the culture of the body, hygiene and bathing.
While in the Middle Ages bathing was commonly practised, even
if not primarily for hygienic reasons, attitudes to water changed
radically at the beginning of the 16th century. This does not mean
that there was no form of body care: rather that other standards
of cleansing held sway. The first bathrooms were constructed in
the houses of the rich, with the bidet and the washbasin beginning to gain in popularity. The use of water for cleansing purposes was also distinguishing feature of the bourgeoisie when
compared to the affected, decadent aristocracy who still used
powder and scent. At the beginning of the 19th century the concept of hygiene was born, including the equipment and knowledge required for the maintenance of one’s health.

Cindy Sherman é considerata una delle artiste più importanti del
nostro tempo. Saranno esposti video e fotografie che risalgono
ai primi anni della sua attività artistica e che le hanno procurato
notorietà. Durante i suoi studi Sherman ha realizzato numerose fotografie accomunate dal tema della metamorfosi, in cui si fondono
elementi del teatro e del cinema. Da più di 35 anni l’artista rappresenta una molteplicità di ruoli e identità femminili attraverso la
gestualità, la posa, il travestimento, la mimica ed il make-up.
Oggetti artistici in vetro di Murano, opere di artisti internazionali
prodotte da Adriano Berengo a Venezia. Con gli artisti Robert
Pan e Aron Demetz verranno creati e presentati per la prima
volta in una mostra due nuovi lavori in vetro di Murano.

Pan and Aron Demetz, two new works in Murano glass will be
created and presented for the first time in an exhibition.

Igiene e bellezza sono da migliaia di anni un tema importante.
Un aspetto importante nella storia culturale dell’umanità è la
cultura del corpo, l’igiene, il bagno. Mentre nel Medioevo il bagno era una pratica comunissima, anche se non per motivi primariamente igienici, l’atteggiamento nei confronti dell’acqua si
modificò in maniera radicale a partire dal 16° secolo. Questo non
significa che non esistesse alcuna cura del corpo, piuttosto vigevano altre norme di pulizia. Verranno costruite le prime stanze
da bagno nelle case dei ricchi, e iniziò a diffondersi il bidet e la
tinozza per lavarsi. L’impiego dell’acqua per la pulizia serviva anche come tratto distintivo della borghesia rispetto ad un’aristocrazia affettata e rammollita che usava ancora cipria e profumo.
All’inizio del XIX sec. nacque il concetto di igiene, che comprende
gli strumenti e le conoscenze per il mantenimento della salute.
