Dear IS Modena families,
Welcome back! We hope you’ve enjoyed a pleasant, fun and relaxing ski-week. Construction work on
our IB Diploma wing has been proceeding throughout the week after a couple of rainy days and
schedule is in line with the plans.
Celebrations of International Mother Language Day on Friday 20th was a great success with numerous
participation from our multilingual moms, find out more in this week’s PYP newsletter.
We have an intense schedule ahead of us this month, with several important parents’ meetings, sports
fixtures, student trips and upcoming IB Diploma verification visit.
We start today with our UK Book Fair, open to all our students and parents from 10:00 to 16:30.
Tomorrow we also welcome a new student in our Grade 1 class, Julia V. We extend our warmest
welcome here at IS Modena to our new young student and her family.

Bentornati! Ci auguriamo abbiate trascorso una piacevole, divertente e rilassante ski week. I lavori di
costruzione dell’ala IB Diploma sono continuati nel corso della settimana dopo un paio di giorni di

Le celebrazioni della Giornata Internazionale della Lingua Madre di venerdì 20 sono state un grande

16:30.
Domani diamo anche il nostro benvenuto ad una nuova studentessa in Grade 1, Julia V. Estendiamo il

at IS Modena
Gli sviluppi dell’IB Diploma
all’IS Modena
We are pleased to announce the appointment of Ms Caroline Searle to the position of IB Diploma
Programme Coordinator with effect from July 2015. We are confident that Ms Searle is the right person to
lead our Diploma Programme in its first years of implementation at the International School of Modena. Ms
Searle will continue to teach some MYP Humanities, in addition to DP History and a substantial part of the
ToK course.
With over seventeen years of experience in education in a variety of schools and over fourteen years of
experience working with this age group, Mrs. Searle, has the understanding of the needs and issues relevant
to the students which will be essential in offering age appropriate pastoral care and support with progression
to further education. As a former Head of Department she holds strong skills in leading a small team of
teachers and building a sense of shared purpose and commitment to high standards and successful
outcomes. During the time she has been working at the International School of Modena she has established
an exemplary working relationship with staff, students and parents.
Ms Searle will become the fourth member of IS Modena’s Leadership Management Team joining Ms. Sarah
Rimini (School Manager), Ms. Jacky Payne (PYP Coordinator )and Ms. Chiara Forti (MYP Coordinator).
The coming weeks and months will allow Ms Searle and our interim coordinator, Mr. Iain Sachdev, to
collaborate closely in this transitional phase, which will also include the IB's "verification visit" on March
30th/31st.
We have also appointed three additional members to our team in recent weeks, who have already begun
liaising with colleagues in school. More information about these teachers will be published in the bulletins
over the coming weeks.

Con piacere vi annunciamo che Ms Caroline Searle è stata nominata Coordinatrice IB Diploma a partire da
luglio 2015. Siamo certi che Ms Searle è la persona giusta per guidare il nostro Diploma Programme nel suo
primo anno di implementazione all’International School of Modena. Ms Searle continuerà ad insegnare un po’
di MYP Humanities, insieme a DP History e ad una parte sostanziale del corso ToK.
Con oltre diciassette anni di esperienza nell’istruzione in una varietà di scuole e oltre quattordici anni di
esperienza lavorando con questa fascia d’età, Ms Searle conosce i bisogni e le questioni rilevanti per gli
studenti, cosa che sarà fondamentale per offrire una cura pastorale adatta all’età e sostegno con il progredire
della loro istruzione. Essendo stata in passato Direttore di Dipartimento, ha consolidate capacità di gestione
di una piccola squadra di insegnanti e di costruzione di sentimento di obiettivi condivisi e impegno verso
elevati standard e traguardi di successo. Nel tempo trascorso all’International School of Modena ha costruito
un esemplare rapporto di lavoro con lo staff, gli studenti e i genitori.
Ms Searle diventerà il quarto membro del Leadership Management Team di IS Modena aggiungendosi a Ms
Sarah Rimini (School Manager), Ms Jacky Payne (Coordinatrice PYP) e Ms Chiara Forti (Coordinatrice PYP).
Le prossime settimane e mesi permetteranno a Ms Searle e al nostro Coordinatore ad intermin, Mr Iain
Sachdev, di collaborare strettamente nella fase di transizione, che includerà anche la visita di verifica del 3031 marzo.
Abbiamo inoltre nominati altri tre nuovi membri del nostro staff nelle ultime settimane, che hanno già

Early Years Education at the
International School of Modena

As you are all aware our school is growing in size and experience and while we are all excited about
the building of our new IB Diploma building, much further down the school we are also flourishing!
For this reason I’d like to share with you a little bit about our Early Years Department and our vision
for our youngest children’s education.
As an IB World School our Early Years Department covers the 3-5 age group in our Kindergarten,
Transition and Grade 1 classrooms and it is here that our commitment to the Primary Years Program
begins. This is a phase in life of extraordinary cognitive, physical, social and emotional development
and our youngest learners demonstrate an innate curiosity for the people around them and their
surrounding environment. Indeed, the latest IB material specifically for Early Years Education
highlights the centrality of Relationships, Environment and Play to all of our children’s learning
experiences. It is within this dynamic of relationships, environment and play that our inquiry based
approach to learning begins.
While the terminology of the ten attributes of the Learner Profile may be complex for our young
children they are shared with them and they remain at the heart of our learning and
the construction of our relationships with our peers, the supporting adults and with the
environment. Through the units of inquiry here at IS Modena you will find our youngest children
inquiring into the movement of horses through different expressive media and technology and the
growth cycle of trees. Our learning flows between inside and outside as we construct our Early Years
vegetable garden and mud kitchen. In Grade 1 children can be found inquiring into the earth’s cycles
and how they affect their lives at a personal level. Our units of inquiry run concurrently in our
Kindergarten and Transition classes allowing us to support the children’s own interests as they arise.
In this way the children quickly become inquiring, knowledgeable thinkers and effective
communicators. Literacy and numeracy skills are also acquired through a process of investigation and
inquiry as the children’s curiosities take hold. This all happens within a context which is not simply
that of additional language acquisition but often, of concurrent multiple language acquisition.
A large part of our time with the children is also spent on supporting the children to co-construct
their personal and group identities. Ultimately we all learn who we are by understanding and
interacting with those around us. It is through moments spent in daily rituals such as circle time, in
collaborative small group play and in social settings such as at lunch time that we develop the ability
to become effective listeners, care for one another and develop the ability to be reflective and open
minded towards others.
All staff at IS Modena believes strongly that our youngest children should be given the opportunity
and support to construct knowledge and understanding through stimulating and joyful interactive
experiences. These are shared with the learning community through communicative and pedagogical
documentation which you will find in the classrooms and corridors. The next time you are in school
take a moment to come along the Early Years corridor and take a look. We will be happy to see you.

Come ben saprete la nostra scuola sta screscendo in dimensioni ed esperienza e mentre siamo
entusiasti della creazione della nostra nuova ala dedicata all’ IB Diploma, in fondo al corridoio stiamo
sbocciando! Per questo motivo, vorrei condividere con voi qualcosa in più della nostra sezione Early
Years e della nostra visione dell’educazione dei bambini più piccoli.
In quanto IB World School la nostra sezione Early Years copre la fascia di età 3-5 anni nelle nostre
classi di Kindergarten, Transition e Grade 1 ed è qui che comincia il nostro impegno verso il Primary
Years Program. Si tratta di una fase della vita di straordinario sviluppo cognitivo, fisico, sociale ed
emotivo e i nostri giovani studenti mostrano un’innata curiosità per le persone che li circondano e il
loro ambiente prossimo.
Infatti, gli ultimi documenti IB specifici per l’educazione Early Years evidenziano la centralità delle
Relazioni, dell’Ambiente e del Gioco nell’esperienza di apprendimento di tutti i nostri bambini. È in
questa dinamica di relazioni, ambiente e gioco che inizia il nostra approccio basato sull’indagine.
Sebbene la terminologia dei dieci attributi del Profilo dello Studente possono essere complessi per i
nostri piccoli studenti, li condividiamo con loro e restano il cuore del nostro apprendimento e della
costruzione di relazioni con i compagni, gli adulti che li sostengono e con l’ambiente. Attraverso le
unità d’indagine qui ad IS Modena troverete i nostri studenti più piccoli studiare il movimento dei
cavalli attraverso diverse mezzi di comunicazione e tecnologie espressive e il ciclo di crescita degli
alberi. Il nostro apprendimento scorre dentro e fuori mentre costruiamo il nostro orto di Early Years e
la nostra cucina di fango. In Grade 1 trovate i bambini a studiare i cicli della terra e come essi
influiscono sulle nostre vite a livello personale. Le nostre unità d’indagine si svolgono
contemporaneamente in Kindergarten e Transition permettendoci di sostenere gli interessi personali
dei bambini mentre si sviluppano. In questo modo i bambini diventano velocemente curiosi,
pensatori esperti e comunicatori efficaci. L’alfabetizzazione e la numerazione vengono acquisiti in un
processo di investigazione e ricerca mentre la curiosità prende piede. Tutto ciò avviene in un contesto
che non è solo quello dell’acquisizione di un’altra lingua ma spesso dell’acquisizione contemporanea
di più lingue.
Gran parte del nostro tempo con i bambini è speso nel sostenerli a co-costruire le loro identità
personali e di gruppo. Fondamentalmente tutti noi impariamo a conoscerci comprendendo ed
interagendo con chi ci sta intorno. È attraverso il tempo trascorso in rituali quotidiani come il
momento in cerchio, in piccoli gruppi collaborativi e in situazioni conviviali come il pranzo che
sviluppiamo la capacità di diventare ascoltatori effettivi, di preoccuparci degli altri e di sviluppare
l’abilità di essere riflessivi e di mente aperta verso gli altri.
Tutto lo staff a IS Modena crede fermamente che i nostri studenti più piccoli devono avere
l’opportunità e il sostegno di costruire la conoscenza e la compresione attraverso esperienze
interattive stimolanti e piene di gioia. Queste vengono condivise con tutta la comunità di discenti
attraverso una documentazione comunicativa e pedagogica che troverete in classe e nei corridoi. La
prossima volta che venite a scuola, prendetevi un momento per visitare il corridoio di Early Years e di

ENROLMENTS 2015/2016 – DEADLINE 20/03/2015
We kindly remind you that to confirm your child(ren)’s enrolment for the
school year 2015/2016, you need to fill in the personal data form and
return it to the school office at your earliest convenience in order for the
schoo office to prepare your contract. If you haven’t received it, please
ask the school office.
The deadline for enrolments is March 20th 2015. If you don’t sign the
enrolment contract and arrange for the deposit payment by that date,
the late renewal fee applies and a place for your child(ren) might not be
granted.
If you need a fee breakdown, please send a request via email to the
school office.

Vi ricordiamo che per confermare l’iscrizione di vostro figlio/i per l’anno
scolastico 2015/2016, è necessario compilare il modulo dei dati anagrafici
e restituirlo quanto prima in segreteria in modo che la stessa possa
preparare il vostro contratto. Se non lo avete ricevuto, potete richiederne
una copia in segreteria.
La scadenza per le iscrizioni è fissata al 20 marzo 2015. Se provvedete
alla firma del contratto e al pagamento dell’acconto entro tale data, vi
verrà applicata la mora di iscrizione tardiva e il posto per vostro figlio
potrebbe non essere garantito.

REMINDERS
Attendance
Learning at the International School of Modena is very interactive, requiring the participation and
interaction of the students with each other and with the teachers. This is adversely affected when a
child is absent – not only for that child in particular but for the dynamics of the whole class.
Of course some absences, such as illness, are unavoidable, but others lie within the family’s priorities.
Please see Extended Absences below.
The Absence forms, in the Home/School Diary, must be completed for a single day of absence or to
cover a period of absence. The Absence forms must be filled out and one part returned to the
school office.
Please remember that if your child has been absent for 6 days or more in a row, a doctor’s note
stating that the child is well enough to attend school must be produced before the child is allowed
to return to school. Weekends add to the total number of days only if they are in the middle of the
sickness time (i.e. a child is sick from Thursday until following Wednesday)
Absences/Tardies
Punctuality is important both as a matter of courtesy and to prevent disruption of classes caused by
the arrival of latecomers. If a student is late she/he misses the important beginning of the school day.
Chronic tardiness prohibits learning for all students. Please show respect for your child’s learning
as well as the other students’ and be on time.
Please refer to the Whole School Behaviour Expectations Document.
If a child is absent or will be late, parents are asked to telephone (or mail) the school before 8:30
and fill out the Late/Early dismissal Absence forms from the Home/School Diary. One part is to be
returned to the office.
Illness and Medication
Students should not come to school if they are ill.
Keeping a sick child at home is the best way to ensure a full and speedy recovery and will reduce the
risk of others becoming infected.
We are not able to administer any medication, prescription or non-prescription and students should
not bring any medication in to school.
Please inform your child’s teacher if you are giving your child any medication. If your child needs to
take medication you will need to inform the School Manager and school office. Students will be
supervised and have to administer medication themselves.
School activity starts at 8:30!
We kindly remind you that school days start at 8:30 sharp. Which means the school activity will begin
exactly at 8:30 and any late comers will be disrupting class.
Please try to make an effort and come in before 8:30 am, children can be dropped off from 8:10
onwards.
Snacks/Drinks
Please note that students may bring healthy snacks or fruit to enjoy during their breaks. Sweets,
crisps and high sugar drinks (Coke, Sprite, Ice-Tea) are not allowed. No gum is permitted anywhere
in the building or on the school grounds.
Early Years students bring only fruit.

PROMEMORIA
Frequenza
L’apprendimento all’International School of Modena è molto interattivo e richiede la partecipazione e
l’interazione degli studenti con gli altri e con gli insegnanti. L’assenza del bambino ha un effetto negativo –
non solo per il bambino in sé ma anche per le dinamiche dell’intera classe.
Sicuramente alcune assenza, come la malattia, sono inevitabili ma altre dipendono dalle priorità famigliari.
Vi preghiamo di fare riferimento all’Assenze Prolungate di seguito.
Il modulo delle Assenze, nel Diario scolastico, deve essere compilato anche per un solo giorno di assenza
o per coprire un periodo di assenza. Il modulo delle Assenze deve essere compilato e una parte deve
essere consegnata in segreteria.
Vi ricordiamo che se vostro figlio è assente per più di 6 giorni di fila è necessario fornire un certificato
medico che dichiari la buona salute fisica dello studente prima che gli sia permesso di rientrare a scuola.
I giorni festivi contribuiscono al calcolo dei giorni malattia solo se cadono nel corso della malattia (per
esempio se un bambino è malato da giovedì fino al mercoledì successivo).
Assenze/Ritardi
La puntualità è importante sia per una questione di educazione sia per prevenire l’interruzione delle lezioni
causate dall’arrivo dei ritardatari. Se uno studente è in ritardo perde l’importante inizio della giornata. Il
ritardo cronico impedisce agli studenti di apprendere. Vi chiediamo di rispettare l’apprendimento di
vostro figlio e degli altri studenti e di essere puntuali.
Vi invitiamo a fare riferimento al documento sulle Aspettative di Comportamento di tutta la scuola.
Se un bambino è assente o è in ritardo, i genitori devono informare telefonicamente (o via email) la
segreteria prima delle 8:30 e compilare il modulo di ingresso posticipato/anticipato che si trova nel
libretto delle assenze nel Diario Scolastico. Una parte deve essere consegnata alla segreteria.
Malattie e Medicazioni
Gli studenti non dovrebbero venire a scuola se sono ammalati.
Tenere a casa un bambino malato è il metodo migliore per garantire una veloce e piena guarigione e
si ridurrà il rischio di diffusione dell’infezione.
Non siamo in grado di somministrare nessun medicinale, prescritto o meno, e gli studenti non
dovrebbero portare medicinali a scuola.
Siete pregati di informare l’insegnante di Vostro figlio se Vostro figlio sta assumendo medicinali. Se ne
deve assumere, dovete informare la School Manager e la segreteria. Gli studenti saranno
supervisionati e dovranno assumere il farmaco da soli.
L’attività accademica inizia alle 8:30!
Vi ricordiamo che le lezioni iniziano alle 8.30 in punto. Ciò significa che le attività didattiche della
giornata iniziano proprio alle 8:30 e qualsiasi ritardatario si ritroverà ad interrompere inevitabilmente
il lavoro della classe. Vi invitiamo a cercare di arrivare prima delle 8.30, vi ricordiamo che gli
studenti possono arrivare dalle 8:10 in avanti.
Merende/bevande
si prega di notare che gli studenti possono portare merende sane o frutta da gustare durante le
ricreazioni.
Caramelle, patatine e bevande gassate (Cola, Sprite e The Freddo) non sono consentiti.
Non è permesso consumare gomme da masticare all’interno e all’esterno della scuola.
Gli studenti delle Materne portano solo frutta.

Library Book Appeal
Dear parents, in order to enhance the books we are ordering for the Diploma Program we are looking for
donations of books in different languages, especially Italian, Spanish, French and German to support
Mother Tongue learners.
In particular we are looking for age appropriate books that focus on the following:
History (20th Century Europe, Civil Rights in USA and China)
Science (Physics, Chemistry and Biology)
Mathematics
French Literature
Plus if anyone has any English Literature they are no longer reading.
Thank you for your help. Any donations are gratefully received and can be given to me in the library.

REMINDERS
PLEASE ENSURE ALL ITEMS ARE LABELLED WITH YOUR CHILD’S NAME
Except for the very young children, we expect the students to keep track of their own belongings. Please
discuss this with them. If your child arrives home with clothing or something else that belongs to another
student, please return it to school the next day.
A lost property (Lost & Found Box) is located in the storage room near the Auditorium, feel free to check it
for missing items and please keep it tidy.

Ad eccezione dei bambini molto piccoli, ci aspettiamo che gli studenti tengano controllati i loro effetti
personali. Discutetene con Vostro figlio. Se Vostro figlio arriva a casa con abbigliamento o altri oggetti che
appartengono ad altri studenti, siete pregati di restituirli a scuola il giorno seguente.
Gli oggetti smarriti (Scatola degli Oggetti Smarriti) si trovano nel ripostiglio vicino all’Auditorium,
controllate liberamente e mantenetelo in ordine.
WINTER SEASON
Please make sure students have winter coats for outdoor breaks & activities.
STAGIONE INVERNALE
Assicuratevi che gli studenti siano muniti di giacche e giacconi invernali per le ricreazioni all’aria aperta.
PARKING AREA
All parents must use the public parking area outside the school gate at all times.
Please remember to lock your cars and please make sure you don’t leave any personal belongings in the
car.
Internal parking area is reserved for staff only and the bus service.
