Meeting, they declare their love just before Renato arrives to warn Riccardo of a plot against him; Amelia has hidden her face behind a veil to conceal her identity from her husband. Riccardo, rushing off, asks Renato to take care of the veiled woman, but not to seek to find out her identity. The leaders of the conspiracy arrive; in confronting Renato in a struggle, the veil flies from Amelia’s face. Seeing her, Renato assumes the worst and asks the leaders of the conspiracy to meet him the following day. Renato threatens to kill Amelia. But she maintains her innocence, so Renato vows to kill Riccardo instead. A page arrives with an invitation to a masked ball; Renato and the conspirators agree to attend, planning to kill Riccardo then. At the ball, Renato learns what costume Riccardo is wearing, finds and stabs him. Riccardo proclaims that although he and Amelia were in love, Amelia was never unfaithful to her husband.
