visit of a friend, find the
barrel of a gun pointed at you,
and at once, four bullets in
your stomach. «What have I
done to you? Why do you want
to kill me?» shouted count
Pavel Kamarowskij, while he
was running into the rooms of
Palazzo Maurogonato on Campo Santa Maria del Giglio, on
that 4th September 1907. The
other guy, running after him,
answered: «You shall not marry Mrs. Tarnowska». It must
have been just as hard to be
admitted to the Civil Hospital,
send your betrothed countess
Maria Tarnowska telegrams,
informing her that your friend
Naunov had shot at you, and
die because of an enema too
many. Despite the bleeding,
the Russian noble’s stomach
wounds were not deadly. This
would be ascertained at the
trial, among the embarrassment of the doctors called to
depose and who cured the victim chosen by the «Russian
Circe», the nickname given to
Tarnowska. The fiery thirtyyear-old lady had prompted her
husband-to-be, count Kamarowskij, to take out a life policy
with her as beneficiary. And
then had sent to his home a killer, naive sweetheart Nicolaij
Naumov, determined to eliminate him to avenge (she would
insinuate) his ill-treated dignity. Instead the insurance
money was to be enjoyed by
the gentlewoman together
with her accomplice-lover,
lawyer Donat Prilukov. But
she did not take into account
that as soon as he was arrested,
Naumov would spill the beans
and the dark lady was to become the focus of the Russian
Affair. Exactly one hundred
years ago, the scandal around

Altrettanto dura, essere ricoverato all’Ospedale Civile,
mandare telegrammi alla
fidanzata contessa Maria Tarnowska comunicandole che
l’amico Naunov gli ha sparato e morire per un clistere di
troppo. Nonostante la perdita di sangue, le ferite al ventre del nobile russo non
erano mortali. Lo si appurerà al processo, tra l’imbarazzo dei medici chiamati a
testimoniare e che ebbero in
cura la vittima designata
della «Circe russa», soprannome affibbiato alla Tarnowska. Ardente trentenne, che
aveva spinto il futuro marito,
conte Kamarowskij, ad accendere una polizza sulla
vita con lei beneficiaria. Per
poi mandargli il sicario a
casa, l’ingenuo innamorato
Nicolaij Naumov, deciso a
farlo fuori per vendicarne
(insinuava lei) la strapazzata
dignità. Quando, invece, i
soldi dell’assicurazione se li
sarebbe goduti la nobildonna insieme al compliceamante, l’avvocato Donat
Prilukov. Senza contare che,
appena arrestato, Naumov
canta che è un piacere e la
dark lady si troverà al centro
dell’Affare dei Russi. Giusti

della croce. Il fascino sulfureo di Maria Tarnowska, un
passato pieno d’amanti rovinatisi per lei o morti suicidi,
di convegni a base di frusta e
droghe, con un matrimonio
fallito alle spalle e due figli
piccoli, mise in ombra l’ambigua personalità della vittima. Il conte Pavel Kamarowskij aveva difficoltà a
pagare l’affitto di palazzo
Maurogonato (adesso trasformato nel prestigioso
Hotel Ala) e chiedeva prestiti in giro. Condannato a
morte in Russia da un comitato rivoluzionario, era stato
inviato come ufficiale in

AN UNPUBLISHED SCRIPT
Since the post-war period, famous film director
Luchino Visconti had wanted to shoot a movie
on the figure of the countess. For her role he
had chosen a star of that time, Clara Calamai,
famous for having shown the first naked breast on screen in La cena delle Beffe (directed
by Alessandro Blasetti, 1941). The role of
Naunov was supposed to be played by
Vittorio Gassman. Although the script had been co-written by Visconti and such prestigious names as Michelangelo
Antonioni, Antonio Pietrangeli and Guido Piovene, it fell through. In the early Sixties, it seemed that the project would be
accomplished. The eligible performers were Romy Schneider
and Helmut Berger. Unfortunately also this second try failed,
due to the high costs that scared the producers. On this matter, see “Il processo di Maria Tarnowska. Una sceneggiatura

Fin dal dopoguerra, il celebre regista Luchino Visconti ebbe
l’idea di girare un film sulla figura della contessa. Nel ruolo
aveva scelto una diva dell’epoca, Clara Calamai, celebre
per aver mostrato il primo seno nudo sullo schermo ne La
cena delle Beffe (regia di Alessandro Blasetti, 1941). Nel ruolo
di Naunov era previsto Vittorio Gassman. Nonostante alla
sceneggiatura avessero collaborato, con Visconti, firme prestigiose come Michelangelo Antonioni, Antonio Pietrangeli e
Guido Piovene non se ne fece nulla. Nei primi anni Sessanta,
parve che il progetto riuscisse ad andare in porto. I papabili
interpreti erano Romy Schneider ed Helmut Berger. Purtroppo

of them, it was insinuated, was
ready to leave his family to follow her. Journalists and special
correspondents from the most
important international newspapers joined in. Even the
stars of that time, the stage
actresses, stared at the moves
and gloomy outfits of the accused. She would stylishly pose,
prey to cruel games and extreme passions, admirers would
throw her flowers as she went
past, the ordinary women, catching sight of her as she was
getting off the gondola to enter
the courtroom, would sign
themselves with the cross.
Maria Tarnowska’s fervent
charm, a past full of lovers
who ruined themselves for her
or committed suicide, of rendezvous based on whips and
drugs, with a failed marriage
behind her and two small
children, overshadowed the
shady personality of the victim. Count Pavel Kamarowskij found difficulty paying
the rent of palazzo Maurogonato (which has now been
turned into prestigious Hotel
Ala) and would ask around
for loans. He was sentenced to
death in Russia by a revolutionary committee, and then
sent as an officer to Manchuria during the RussianJapanese war. The late spouse,
a stand-up artist he married
despite his family’s opposition
in Kiev, played the grande
dame and had a partiality for
uniforms, and involved him
in a series of blackmails. His
wife was ill and about to die,
when during a train journey
Kamarowskij met and flamed

MEDARDO ROSSO - THE TRANSIENT FORM
Medardo Rosso, sculptor of the Scapigliatura and Impressionism movements, is one of the most outstanding artistic figures who lived at the turn of XX century. Yet, as for the most significant part of his production, he still remains unknown.
Rosso, who was born in Turin in 1858, launched a new idea of sculpture that was entirely based on plasticity, shape and
modulation, rather than on cutting and engraving, concepts underlying the traditional idea of sculpture of the previous
centuries. Works like ‘Madame X’ (1896), ‘Yvette Guilbert’ (1895), ‘Rieus’ (1890) and ‘Enfante malade’ (1893-95) mainly
created with wax and chalk, clearly express what he meant by an art which, while evolving, had to comprise also photography and thus became “form”. A form that – as Paola Mola, curator of the exhibition “Rosso. The transient form” on
show at the Guggenheim until January 6, 2008, recalls – “is not necessarily tangible but it can also be something that
lingers in the eye or in the memory. The term ‘transient’ is used to define Rosso’s sculpture in relation to the ancient sculpture which is rooted in the landscape, the one that gives a mark to places: the obelisk, the altar. But it is also used to
distinguish it from the sculpture on bases or pedestals of the IX century or even of the XX century sculpture. Rosso’s works
are inspiring everywhere they are placed, they are “mobile”. Hence the definition ‘transient form’.” The exhibition features 23 documented sculptures as well as outstanding and unpublished data – thanks to thorough studies of documents, papers and letters coming from the archives of Mola and Fabo Virtucci, fostered some years ago by the artist’s
grandniece Danila Marsure Rosso. Moreover, the sculptures are flanked by over 100 photographic works coming from
the archive ‘Archivio Medardo Rosso’ of the city of Barzio (in the municipality of Como).

Medardo Rosso, scultore scapigliato-impressionista, fu uno delle più importanti figure artistiche vissute a cavallo tra ‘8 e ‘900. Nonostante questo, per la parte più significativa della sua produzione, è da ritenersi ancora sconosciuto. Nato a Torino nel 1858 egli lanciò un’idea nuova di
scultura tutta basata su plasticità, forma, modulazione, piuttosto che su taglio o incisione, concetti alla base della tradizionale idea di scultura
dei secoli precedenti. Opere come Madame X (1896), Yvette Guilbert (1895), Rieus (1890) e Bambino malato (1893-95), realizzate per lo più in
cera e gesso, mostrano come lui intendesse un’arte che, evolvendosi, doveva comprendere anche la fotografia e che dunque diveniva
“forma”. Una forma che - come ricorda Paola Mola, curatrice della mostra “Rosso. La forma instabile”, allestita alla Guggenheim fino al 6 gennaio 2008 – “non è necessariamente concreta, può essere anche quello che resta nell’occhio o nella memoria. Instabile anche per qualificare la scultura di Rosso in relazione a quella antica radicata nel terreno, quella che segna i luoghi: l’obelisco, l’altare; ma anche per distinguerla da quella ottocentesca o anche novecentesca sulle basi o piedistalli. Rosso è da camera, da “mobile”, mobile appunto, da teca trasparente e riflettente. Perciò la forma instabile”. La mostra presenta 23 sculture documentate, ma affianca – grazie agli studi capillari dei documenti,
carte e lettere dell’archivio della stessa Mola e di Fabio Vittucci, promossi anni fa dalla pronipote dell’artista Danila Marsure Rosso – importanti
risultati e dati inediti. Alle sculture sono affiancate inoltre più di 100 opere fotografiche provenienti dall’Archivio Medardo Rosso di Barzio (Como).

idea of building two other bridges on the Canal
Grande, apart from the bridges of Rialto, Scalzi and
Accademia, was his – the idea was then reconsidered during
the Austrian period), the Venetian Friar Vincenzo Coronelli
(1650-1718) certainly is one of the most interesting figures of
the XVII/ XVIII century. He was one of the most famous
makers of “globes” – namely space representations of the
earth and of the sky, either painted or printed on spherical
surfaces – to the extent that even the Sun King, Louis XIV,
wanted to have some of them for his Versailles palace (1683).
Those globes, almost always in pairs (celestial and terrestrial), used to embellish the libraries of monasteries, of scholars and sovereigns and were not only extraordinary works of
art but also outstanding observation instruments. Indeed,
after the creation of the first globe
in 1492, all geographical and astronomical knowledge was – from the
Babylonian calendar to Greek
cosmology, to Ptolemy and to scientific thought, with Copernicus,
Kepler, Galileo Galilei and Newton
– “engraved” in a way that recalled
the shape of the earth or of the celestial sphere. At the Correr Museum,
thanks to the exhibition “Sfere del
cielo, sfere delle Terra. Globi celesti
e terrestri dal XVI al XX secolo”
(on show until February 29, 2008),
one can see not only Coronelli’s globes, that are normally displayed
there, but also the extraordinary
XVI century globe by Livio Sanudo,
that was thought to be lost, as well
as numerous other pieces coming
from outstanding private collections
such as Rudolf Schmidt’s, member
of the “International Coronelli
Society for the Study of Globes”

oltre a quello di Rialto -Scalzi e Accademia- idea
ripresa in epoca austriaca), il veneziano fra’ Vincenzo
Coronelli (1650-1718) è certamente una delle personalità più
interessanti del XVII/XVIII secolo. Egli fu uno dei più famosi costruttori di “globi”, detti anche mappamondi - ovvero
rappresentazioni spaziali della Terra o del cielo, dipinti o
stampati su superficie sferica - tanto che pure il Re Sole, Luigi
XIV, ne volle alcuni per la sua Reggia di Versailles (1683).
Questi globi, quasi sempre in coppia (celeste e terrestre)
abbellivano le biblioteche di monasteri, di studiosi e sovrani e
oltre ad essere straordinarie opere d’arte, rappresentavano
anche un importante strumento di studio poichè, a partire dal
primo pervenutoci nel 1492, tutte le conoscenze geografiche
e astronomiche – dai calendari
babilonesi alla cosmologia greca,
fino a Tolomeo e al pensiero scientifico, con Copernico, Keplero,
Galileo e Newton - si “imprimevano” in una forma che ricordava
quella del pianeta o della sfera
celeste. Al Museo Correr, oltre ai
globi del Coronelli usualmente
esposti, è possibile vedere per la
prima volta insieme, grazie alla
mostra “Sfere del cielo, sfere della
Terra. Globi celesti e terrestri dal
XVI al XX secolo” (fino al 29 febbraio 2008), anche lo straordinario
globo cinquecentesco di Livio
Sanudo che si credeva perduto (ad
opera della curatrice, Marica
Milanesi) e numerosi altri esemplari provenienti da importanti collezioni private, tra cui quella di
Rudolf Schmidt, membro della
“Società Internazionale Coronelli
per lo studio dei Globi”.

he pleasure of reading is not just for what one reads in a
book or for the beauty that is aroused in the spirit by
looking at the portrayals or images in it contained, but
also for what can be perceived through those senses that are normally thought to be secondary in such a context, but that can in
every respect become part of the concept of “book”. They are the
very matter with which it is created, that are perceived through
touch; the sound of rustling pages through hearing; or, again, the
“scents” of the materials used (rubber, feathers, silk, wood, even
the obsidian collected at Lipari), that stimulate taste and the
sense of smell. That is the intuition for a “Poem for the senses”
underlying the concept of the “artist’s books” (realized in small
and limited editions, by collectors) like those by Clemens-Tobias
Lange – who presents volumes printed with extreme care and
realised, page by page, with the careful eye of a painter – on
show at the monumental halls of the Biblioteca Marciana until
November 18, 2007.

libro o per la bellezza che ci provoca nello spirito osservare le raffigurazioni o le immagini in esso contenute, ma
anche per ciò che può essere percepito attraverso quei sensi
che normalmente si potrebbero pensare secondari in un tale
contesto, ma che pure possono entrare a tutti gli effetti a far

hundred works including paintings, sculptures, miniatures, cartographies, metal works, glass objects, jewels, fabrics, carpets,
pottery and more – the relationship between Venice and the
Islamic realities with which it entered into contact: the Arabs,
Mameluke Turks, Ottomans, Persians…in a chronological span
ranging from 827 – year of the legendary transposition of the
relics of Saint Mark from Alexandria, until the end of the

Magistratures, the Palace is the supreme
embodiment of Venetian civilisation. A
masterpiece of gothic architecture, it

of artists, including Tiziano, Veronese,

Quaderno, «the Lion and the Angel» by
Baruffaldi, recalls a famous sculpture
group where the lion is associated with
the figure of the doge. In this case too
the angel-footballer is transfigured into
an iconic figure of religious value: for a
considerable time the doge was the
true head of the Church of St. Mark,
with prerogatives overriding the power
of the pope. And in another two works
the angels with the spears recall the
two moors on the clock tower in St.
Mark’s Square. Venice therefore is no
pretext, it is not a presence dictated by
mere habit and familiarity. It is instead the background created
for figures – modern angels – that are intimately linked to the
history, culture and art of the Serenissima.
The Galleria Regina, after ten years of activity now sets its identity
making a precise choice: glass at the service of art. The historical
seat has been restored and enlarged. The aim of Franco Regina
and his staff is forwarded to the stimulating project to bring near
two different categories of artists: glass artists, who design and realise the pieces personally, and other artists who assign the creation
of their works to a glass masters team.

Santo Stefano, who is celebrated on December 26, was the first deacon and the first

himself in the Venetian callis owing to the thick fog, was accompanied home by the appearance of the Virgin Mary
who then disappeared near the church. He wanted a large fresco to be realised in that particular spot. What remains
of it today are only some fragments.

Santo Stefano, che si festeggia il 26 dicembre, fu il primo diacono ed il primo martire cristiano scelto dagli Apostoli per
amministrare e guidare le prime comunità cristiane. Accusato dal Sinedrio di bestemmiare il Signore, egli si difese suscitando le ire dei Sacerdoti che lo condannarono alla lapidazione: l’episodio è raccontato nel Martirio di S. Stefano di
Antonio Foler (1733). L’interno, che presenta tre navate concluse da cappelle absidali e presbiterio sopraelevato, si differenzia appena da altre chiese della seconda metà del XV secolo, ma rivela una grande capacità ingegneristica dei
costruttori: il presbiterio è stato infatti realizzato sopra un ponte che scavalca il Rio del Santissimo, il quale assume tale
nome proprio per questo motivo. Altra particolarità non riscontrabile in altre chiese veneziane è lo sviluppo planimetrico delle tre navate: si aprono infatti a ventaglio, aumentando la loro larghezza verso la facciata, e ciò crea una forte
illusione prospettica. Anche questa chiesa, come molte altre, è legata ad una leggenda: verso la fine del 1600 il nobile Lorenzo Loredan, persosi tra le calli veneziane a causa di una fitta nebbia, fu accompagnato a casa da un’apparizione della Vergine che scomparve nel punto, vicino alla chiesa, ove egli volle fosse realizzato un grande affresco, di
cui rimangono oggi solo resti frammentari.
The most famous Basilica in Venice. The
exterior façades are decorated in
Byzantine style, with columns, basreliefs and coloured marble. On the terrace stand four imposing gilded bronze
horses. The building has five large
domes. The church is decorated inside
with gilded mosaics and treasures representing stories from the Bible.

Founded in the 12th century, this church
was rebuilt during the 17th century and,
at the beginning of the 18th century, it
was modified also its aspect, facing now
the Grand Canal: the new façade made
by the architect Domenico Rossi. The
church contains a veritable compendium of Venetian 18th -century paintings including an early work by Tiepolo.

BASILICA DEI FRARI

It is an example of Gothic architecture
in Venice built between the 14th and
15th century and laid out in the form
of a Latin cross: it is composed of three
naves divided by twelve huge pillars.

Vergine col bimbo” by Bellini, graves of
Doges and of captains of arms, monuments dedicated to Canova and Tiziano.

This church was probably built in the 9th
The church has Byzantine origins, but
very few remains of the ancient building, modified during the XV century
and then restored at the beginning of
the XIX by the architect Davide Rossi.
He perfectly harmonized his NeoClassical choises with the original late
Gothic structure.

MADONNA DELL'ORTO

Built in the middle of 1300, this church changed its original name (San
Cristoforo) in Madonna dell’Orto
when an imagine of the Virgin, found
in a garden nearby, was brought in the
church itself. It is a typical Venetian
Gothic religious buildings. It was
Tintoretto’s parish church and he is
buried with his family in the chapel to
the right of the high altar.

In the middle of the 17th century,
Venice was struck by a terrible plague; in order to free the city, the
Republic of Venice’s Senate decided
that a church should have been built,
dedicated to the Virgin, asking her for
Health (salute). Between eleven plans
presented, it was chosen the one by
Baldassarre Longhena and works started in 1631. He designed a temple
having a central area on an octagonal
plan, dominated by a huge dome
with great arches.

Madonna Bizantina” work from the
13th-century Greek-Byzantine school.
Events: every year on November 21 the
inhabitants process to the Salute for a
service of thanksgiving for deliverence

According to the legend, this is one of
the eight churches founded by St.
Magno, Bishop of Oderzo, in the VII
century, and dedicated to the Virgin
who appeared in a dream to the
Bishop. However, the church, as we
can see it nowadays, was built in 1492
by Mauro Codussi, the leading architect of the early Venetian Renaissance.
The building has a Greek cross pattern, with three naves and the roof in
the shape of a cross vault.

One of the greatest examples of Palladio’s
architecture, and by some considered his
masterpiece, this church was built as a
result of a motion carried by the Senate
after the plague that struck Venice in
1576.
It is a votive temple dedicated to the
Redeemer.

Events: every year, on the third
Sunday of July, the temple is the destination of a pilgrimage.

It was built between the 14th and the
15th centuries and it is the largest
church in Venice. After S. Marco, this
was considered an “official” temple: it
was used for the solemn obsequies of
the dead Doges. The magnificent interior is in the form of a Latin cross, it has
three naves with a cross vault and a
polygonal apse.

It is one of the most beautiful VenetianByzantine buildings of the 12th century.
The exterior of the hexagonal apse is
very interesting, both for its architectural
beauty and the wealth of its decorative
elements. Five columns of Greek marble
divide the interior into three naves.

patterns and symbolic pictures of animals.
SAN ZACCARIA

The old church, which belonged to the
nuns of the convent bearing the same
name, is located near the main church,
which was built by Codussi between
1480 and 1500. The new façade is a
typical example of Venetian Renaissance. Two rows of columns with beautiful capitals divided the interior into
three aisles. The great altar is surmounted by a cross vault and a hemispherical dome. The stunning interior is literally covered with paintings.

SANTA MARIA DEL ROSARIO
CHIESA DEI GESUATI
Built by the Carmelites and dedicated
to Saint Mary of Nazareth, it was designed by B. Longhena. The façade,
made of Carrara marble, is an example of the Venetian Baroque style.
Once there was also a marvellous
vault frescoed by G.B. Tiepolo; unfortunately, in 1915 it was destroyed by
Austrian bombs.
To see: sculptures, gilt and polychromatic decorations and the fine marbles.
This is an 11th century VenetianByzantine building in the form of a
Romanic Basilica. It is the oldest
monument of this type preserved in
the lagoon. The simple and solemn
interior is made up of precious marbles and gilt mosaics.
To see: the mosaics of the small apse on
ble portal attributed to Bartolomeo Bon.
The interior is divided into three wide
longitudinal Greek marble naves, the
presbytery has interesting inlaid wooden
choir stalls and the ceiling is shaped like
an inverted ship’s hull.
To see: “La lavanda dei piedi” and
“Cristo nell’orto” by J. Tintoretto; “Il
Battesimo di Cristo” by Paris Bordone.
The church of the Jesuits was built
between 1726 and 1735, it was commissioned by Dominicans, after they
took the place of the Jesuits, in order to
replace the small church that still stands
beside it. Giorgio Massari was the author
of the church’s design and of the internal
decoration, assisted by two great artists
of the period: Giambattista Tiepolo and
Gianmaria Morlaiter. The interior, with
its single nave, side chapels and a deep
presbytery, is beautifully balanced.
To see: the altarpiece and the ceiling by
G.B. Tiepolo, the altarpiece by
Piazzetta and “La Crocifissione” by
Tintoretto.
The church of S. Giovanni Elemosinario
was founded before 1071, but nothing
remains of the primitive building, due to
the devastating fire that swept through
the Rialto area in 1514. The current
building has simple and somewhat classical interiors, richly decorated with
many works: token of the special devotion of the school of arts and trades that
used the church premises.
To see: The altarpieces by Titian and by
Pordenone and the frescoes in the
cupola came to light again during the
restoration work.

It’s one of the six Scuole Grandi and,
according to Venice history, art and culture, it’s considered one of the greatest. The
building is a splendid Renaissance architecture example. The elegant double
stairway inside, lit with large arched windows, was built by Codussi. The beautiful
exterior Renaissance iconostasis, with its
carved decoration, was designed by P.
Lombardo.
To see: the ceiling with visions of the
Apocalypse, works of great masters such
as G.B. Tiepolo, Diziani, Marieschi.

This 16th century Renaissance building,
designed by Bartolomeo Bon, lodges
the school dedicated to San Rocco, the
protector of plague-strickens. San
Rocco archconfraternity’s seat is still
very active in the organisation of cultural meetings and concerts.
To see: an extraordinary collection of
works by Tintoretto, the numerous art
treasures of the 15th century, the
historic Nacchini organ.

he Venice property scene has been shaken
up in the last three years by the emergence of
Venice Estates, an English/Italian real estate
agency specialising in high end prestige property but in fact the owner Ann-Marie Doyle has worked
with property here for almost twenty years, running a
successful rentals business exclusively offering high
standard and prestige properties in central locations.

Estates, un'agenzia immobiliare inglese/italiana
specializzata in beni immobili di alto livello e prestigio - ma
a dire il vero la titolare Ann-Marie Doyle si occupa di beni
immobili, qui da noi, da quasi vent'anni, gestendo una fiorente attività di affitto basata sull'offerta esclusiva di immobili di elevati standard e di prestigio in ubicazioni centrali.
Ann-Marie, tell me how you became involved in
real estate?
Foreigners, particularly English and Americans,
have always loved Venice so it was a logical step for
me to move into selling properties offering the
foreign buyer the dreamy quality they want as well
as the high standard they expect. Demand is very
strong at the top end of the market at the moment,
with clients deciding quickly- as happened with a
beautiful 17th century house on Giudecca with
pool which we have just sold to a private client as
a fabulous family home. We have also recently sold
one of the most important piano nobile properties
on the Grand Canal – in just a few weeks. Other
negotiations however can be very long and tortuous, and require a steady hand.
Ann-Marie, mi racconti come ti sei avvicinata al mondo dei
beni immobili?
Da sempre gli stranieri, soprattutto gli inglesi e gli americani, amano Venezia e mi è sembrato logico iniziare a
vendere beni immobili, offrendo all'acquirente straniero
la qualità impeccabile che ha sempre sognato unitamente agli standard elevati che desidera. Attualmente è altissima la richiesta ai livelli più alti del mercato, ed i clienti
decidono in fretta - come è successo con un bellissimo
edificio con piscina del XVII secolo alla Giudecca, che
abbiamo appena venduto ad un cliente privato e verrà
utilizzato come favolosa residenza familiare. Di recente
abbiamo venduto anche uno dei più importanti immobili al piano nobile sul Canal Grande – in solo poche settimane. Le altre trattative, comunque, possono essere
molto lunghe e tortuose e richiedono una mano ferma.
How do you manage to run a uniquely Venice
business from London?
Well I think breathe and dream Venice, and I
spend a lot of time on planes! I might live in
London but my head is permanently in San
Marco. Speaking fluent Italian helps! I have
always tried to run my business in a careful and
professional way yet understanding about
Venetian life and respecting it - there is a basic gentility and respect here which somehow gets lost in
a big city. My life is in London but my heart is
here. I just wish I always wore the right shoes…
Come riesci a gestire un'attività unicamente veneziana
da Londra?
Beh, io penso, respiro, e sogno Venezia, e trascorro tanto
tempo in aereo! E' vero che vivo a Londra, ma la mia testa
è permanentemente a San Marco. Parlare un buon italiano aiuta! Ho sempre cercato di gestire la mia attività in
modo attento e professionale, comunque cercando di
capire lo stile di vita veneziano e rispettandolo - c'è una
sorta di garbo e rispetto qui che in qualche modo si perde
in una grande città. La mia vita è a Londra ma il mio cuore
è qui. Spero di aver indossato sempre i panni giusti…
Does Venice Estates have a base here?
Yes we have an office in San Marco, so we can organise everything locally, from getting plans, organising
viewings, preparing documents for contract, but once
a client has seen a property and decides to make an
offer, they don’t need to come back to Venice until the
final contract, and even then if they are too busy we can
take care of everything for them. In a recent sale we
had six lawyers working on a complicated contract in
Milan, Rome, Monaco, Luxembourg and London, all
done by email and conference calls. When we sold the
beautiful Palazzo Zane Habsburg the buyers were in
Paris and the seller in New York – they never met but
the sale went very smoothly.
And what’s next?
I see that Venice is going to absolutely maintain its
position as one of the most important real estate
hot spots in the world – with high quality/ luxury
restoration projects, yet retaining for ever its historical and aesthetic importance. For example we
have recently sold one of the two most important
Gothic palazzi in Venice, and we will soon be
remarketing it as luxury apartments, reflecting its
historical importance in understated elegance.
And for me? I have just invested in a divine pair
of Sergio Rossi flat boots which I spotted while
rushing past their shop in San Marco…perfect!

Venice Estates ha una base qui?
Sì, abbiamo un ufficio a San Marco, quindi riusciamo ad
organizzare il tutto a livello locale, dall'ottenimento dei
piani, all'organizzazione dei sopralluoghi, alla preparazione dei documenti per il contratto, ma una volta che il
cliente ha visto un bene immobile e decide di sottoporre
un'offerta, viene a Venezia solamente al momento del
contratto definitivo e, nel caso sia troppo impegnato, possiamo occuparci di tutto noi al suo posto. Durante una
vendita recente abbiamo affidato un contratto complesso
a sei avvocati che lavoravano da Milano, Roma, Monaco,
Lussemburgo e Londra, il tutto tramite e-mail e conference call. Quando abbiamo venduto l'incantevole
Palazzo Zane Habsburg, gli acquirenti erano a Parigi ed
il venditore a New York – non si sono mai incontrati ma
la vendita è stata portata avanti senza intoppi.
E quale sarà il prossimo passo?
Sono sicurissima che Venezia continuerà a figurare tra i più
importanti centri immobiliari del mondo – con progetti di
restauro di alta qualità/lusso, conservando comunque per
sempre la sua rilevanza storica ed estetica. Ad esempio, di
recente abbiamo venduto uno dei due più importanti palazzi gotici a Venezia, e presto lo reintrodurremo nel mercato
sotto forma di appartamenti di lusso, rispecchiandone la
rilevanza storica in un'eleganza minimizzata. E per me? Ho
appena investito in un meraviglioso paio di stivali senza
tacco Sergio Rossi, che avevo adocchiato mentre passavo
frettolosamente davanti al negozio di San Marco…perfetti!

amore quotidiano, dinamico,
che si consuma in luoghi scuri,
poco appariscenti, dalle insegne stanche e nascoste. Eppure quello di
Venezia e il suo vino è un rapporto
forte, denso, come il profumo delle
terre da cui nasce. Nel 1317 il Gran
Consiglio ordinava che le osterie in
città fossero 16, ma nel 1908 solo nel
sestiere di San Marco esisteva una
mescita ogni 69 abitanti e, due anni
dopo, si registravano in città ben 1276
spacci di bevande alcoliche. Ma l’importanza e la quantità delle osterie, di
malvasie (che vendevano il vino del
Peloponneso), di spacci non era (e non
è) solamente indice della propensione
al consumo di vino. Venezia è città
chiusa, dove la gente si muove a piedi e
incontra gente. In questi luoghi, scuri e
spesso nascosti, si sono organizzate e
consumate rivoluzioni, si sono scritti
libri, si sono dipinti quadri. All’ombra
di calici si sono inventati pensieri,
costruito disegni politici, discusso d’arte e di scienza. Un collante per una
socialità vivace e incline al pensiero.
Già nel 42 a.C., quando nacque Julia
Concordia, l’attuale Concordia
Sagittaria, si coltivava il nobile grappolo. Nel Duecento i vigneti erano prosperi in tutta la campagna veneta.
C’erano filari in pianura, in collina, perfino in piazza San Marco. Oggi all’ombra della basilica non ci sono vigneti,
ma è rimasto il culto del vino che ritorna in questi ultimi anni in forma diversa. Una terra ricca quella veneta, a

THE LAND OF WINE
millenary relationship, a daily
and dynamic affection lived in
dark, quiet places signalled by
tired and hidden signs. Yet the bond
linking Venice and its wine is as powerful and intense as the scent of the lands
where it comes to light. In 1317 the
‘Great Council’ – government of the city
– ordered that the ‘osterie’ in the city had
to be no more than sixteen. In 1908
however, there was an osteria every
sixty-nine inhabitants only in the
“Sestiere di San Marco” – district of Saint
Mark. Two years later there were 1276
stores selling alcoholic drinks in Venice.
The importance and the large number of
“osterie”, “malvasie” – local bars selling
the wine of the Peloponnese – and stores
was and still is not only a sign of the propensity for the consumption of wine.
Venice is an isolated city, where people
move on foot and meet other people. It
is in those dark and often hidden places
that revolutions have been organized,
books written and pictures painted. In
the shade of chalices new thoughts have
been invented, political projects organized and discussions on art and science
carried out. The noble fruit was already
cultivated in 42 B.C. when the Roman
colony Julia Concordia – now Concordia
Sagittaria – was born. In the thirteenth
century, the entire Venetian countryside
abounded in vineyards. There were rows
of vines in the flatlands, hills and even in
Saint Mark’s square. Today, there are no
vineyards in the shade of the Basilica but
the cult of wine is still alive and is expressed in different forms. The land of
Veneto, not too far from Saint Mark, is a
rich one. Saint Mark’s Lion still flies over
these wide vineyards extending between
the Livenza and Tagliamento rivers, the
Verona and Treviso hills, over the flatlands and piedmont, the sea and the
mountains of Belluno. The grapes of
Veneto reflect the taste of a kaleidoscopic
land. They are marked by the tonalities
that the sun has offered to these different
and well-defined landscapes. It is now
up to you to choose and to discover the
new tastes of a long-standing tradition.

The lands of Petrarca and beyond
An eclectic land washed by the sea,
enriched by the intense scent of the
mountains and the more gentle ones
of the hills. The Italian North-East
encompasses all of that, an ideal
place where life grows between
ancient villages and medieval towns.
The most interesting areas from a
landscape point of view, which certainly deserve being mentioned,
include the one of the Euganean
Hills, at the centre of the Veneto
region. In the land of Petrarca, illustrious poet who lived and died
(1374) in Arquà (Padua), vineyardists
have made a remarkable improvement by launching on the market
the “extraordinary thirteen”, i.e. a
variety of wines promoted by the
Consortium for the Safeguard of
DOC wines of the Euganean Hills
and produced in a unique environment. The village of Arquà is not only
interesting for its artistic and cultural
fame but also for its high quality wine
ranging from the Red Wine of the
Euganean Hills to the sweet wines of
the white or yellow Moscato like the
Fior d’Arancio.
Una terra eclettica, bagnata dal
mare, insaporita dai forti profumi della montagna e da quelli
più dolci della collina. Il Nordest
italiano contiene tutto, un luogo
ideale dove la vite cresce fra borghi antichi e città medioevali. Fra
le zone paesaggisticamente più
interessanti c’è da segnalare
quella dei Colli Euganei, al centro del Veneto. Nella terra del
Petrarca, l’illustre poeta che visse
e morì (nel 1374) ad Arquà
(Padova), i vignaioli euganei
hanno compiuto un grande salto
di qualità lanciando sul mercato
i “magnifici tredici”: una gamma
di vini promossi dal Consorzio di
Tutela dei vini D.O.C. Colli
Euganei che derivano da un
ambiente unico. E proprio il
borgo di Arquà, oltre all’evidente richiamo artistico-culturale, è
interessante anche dal punto di
vista enologico: la sua produzione di vini di grande caratura spazia dal Rosso Colli Euganei ai vini
dolci da uve Moscato, bianco o
giallo, come il Fior d’Arancio.

Liguria hills. The North of Italy certainly offers a lot from an “oenotourist” point of view. Gentle hills
covered with vineyards and small
medieval villages of the Franciacorta, in the province of Brescia:
a land on which hillsides
Benedictine monks used to cultivate vineyards already in the Middle
Ages. Today, it produces our
‘Spumante’ and cellars like “Ca’ del
Bosco” and “Berlucchi” enjoy great
international renown. Yet, North
Italy is above all the land of the
Doge’s vineyards. A plot of land
that, from the eastern side of the
province of Venice, spreads as far as
Treviso and even beyond, over the
area of Pordenone. It is in these flatlands that the DOC LisonPramaggiore wine is produced by
extraordinary enterprises that have
made the oenological production
their strength: Margherita, Sant’Anna and the Paladin cellars of
Annone Veneto (in the province of
Venice), at the heart of the ancient
“Bosco del Merlo”, which organizes
tours with guided wine tasting enabling the visitor to experience the
environment of an enterprise committed to the production of quality
wine. The area embracing the
towns of Portogruaro and Concordia Sagittaria can be easily reached
from Venice by train or car (A4
Venezia – Trieste motorway).

enoturistico. Le dolci colline ricoperte di vigneti e punteggiate dai
piccoli borghi medievali della

Medioevo coltivavano la vite. Oggi
produce il nostro Champagne e
cantine come “Ca’ del Bosco” e
“Berlucchi” hanno ormai fama
internazionale. Ma il Nord Italia è
anche, e soprattutto, quello dei vitigni del Doge. Un fazzoletto di
Veneto che dalla parte più orientale della provincia di Venezia si
estende fino a Treviso e ancor più
lontano nel Pordenonese.
È da queste pianure che nasce il vino
Doc Lison-Pramaggiore con le sue
straordinarie aziende che hanno
fatto della cultura enologica il loro
punto di forza: Santa Margherita,
Sant’Anna e le cantine Paladin di
Annone Veneto (Ve), in mezzo
all’antico "Bosco del Merlo", che
organizza veri e propri tour con
degustazioni guidate che consentono al visitatore di respirare l’atmosfera di una realtà aziendale impegnata
nella produzione di vini di qualità.
La zona, che comprende le storiche
cittadine di Portogruaro e Concordia
Sagittaria, è facilmente raggiungibile
da Venezia in treno o in auto (autostrada A4 Venezia – Trieste).

area encompasses the entire area
surrounding Florence, the Chianti
hills, the Val d’Elsa and Siena. While
the one of the Chianti Classico
comprises nine towns where each
cellar adopts a particular winemaking method. “Chianti” is the
most bottled Tuscan wine with at
least 120 million bottles. It is mostly
linked to the Sangiovese wine

The rich land of the Puglia
region boasts a large production
of wine (7.236.000 hectolitres),
thus covering 17% of the overall
national production. It was once
considered the reservoir of the
north since it used its own grapes for the production of
Vermouth in Turin or in France.
In more recent times, oenologists from Puglia have began producing wines that are bottled
locally.

Etiquette
The often forgotten art of serving and being served. Here are,
in a few rules, the procedures that each sommelier perfectly
knows. Because in the wine ceremony, style is all too important.

Servire ed essere serviti: un’arte spesso dimenticata. In poche
regole la liturgia che ogni sommelier conosce a perfezione.
Perché la forma, nella cerimonia del vino, conta. Eccome.
1. The bottle of wine requested by the client has to be cleaned and brought to the
table by carrying it from the bottom with the left arm, using a linen napkin.
2. Once the bottle has been showed to the client, describe the label: name, denomination, cellar, vintage and alcoholic proof.
3. You then return to the guéridon, where the bottle has to be placed keeping the
label on the client’s side.
4. The bottle, which does not have to be shaken, has to be cut horizontally, just
under the bottle-neck, first clockwise and then anticlockwise. The next cut has to
be vertical. You can now remove the metal cap and place it on a small service
plate or on the front pocket of your apron.
5. Clean the bottleneck with the linen napkin.
6. Place the corkscrew at the centre of the cork and insert it with a rotation.
7. Start drawing the cork by using the first lever and then the second one.
8. Try to avoid the not too elegant “bang”.
9. Smell the cork to assess the wine quality which is often undermined by the cork itself.
Place the cork on the service plate without directly touching it with your hands.
10. With an end of the linen napkin clean the bottle-head from remaining bits of
cork. Pour some wine into your tasting glass, and if the wine is satisfying, it can
be served to the customer.
11. Wine has to be served from the right holding the bottle from the bottom or with
your fingers slightly at the centre of the bottle. Pour some wine to the host and wait
for his remark.
12. The first to be served are the older women guests, then the younger ones until
you come back to the host, who will be the last person to be served. Exception
made for a guest of honour or a prelate who should be served first.
13. The serving procedure has to be clockwise. To avoid that drips fall on the table
or on the client’s clothes, twist the bottle slightly as you tilt it upright and clean it
with the linen napkin.
14. At this point, go back to the side-table – or guéridon – where you will place
the bottle with the label facing the client’s table. You can know take the cork out
of the corkscrew by using the linen napkin to avoid that aromas and odours
remain on your hands, thus undermining the taste of the following wine.
1. La bottiglia richiesta dal cliente viene pulita e si conduce al tavolo tenendola dal
basso, con il braccio sinistro, usando un tovagliolo.
2. Dopo averla mostrata si enuncia l'etichetta: nome, denominazione, cantina,
annata, gradazione alcolica.
3. Si torna quindi al tavolo di servizio (gueridon) dove si depone la bottiglia avendo cura di lasciare l'etichetta sempre rivolta verso il cliente.
4. La bottiglia, che non deve essere mai mossa, si incide in senso orizzontale appena
al di sotto la nervatura in cima al collo, prima in senso orario e poi antiorario. Si incide nuovamente ma questa volta in senso verticale e si rimuove la capsula di stagnola deponendola sul piattino di servizio o nella tasca frontale del proprio grembiule.
5. Mediante il tovagliolo si pulisce il collo della bottiglia.
6. Con il cavatappi si punta la spirale al centro del tappo e si inserisce con una rotazione.
7. Si inizia quindi a tirare usando la prima leva del cavatappi poi, a fine corsa, si
passa al secondo ancoraggio.
8. Si eviterà con cura di fare il poco elegante "bòtto".
9. Si annusa il tappo per valutare la bontà del vino che talvolta viene corrotto proprio dal
sughero, dopodiché lo si poggia sul piattino senza toccarlo con le mani.
10. Con un'estremità del torciòlo si pulisce il becco dai residui di sughero e si versa
poco vino nel bicchiere da degustazione: se l'assaggio risulta buono il vino è pronto per essere servito.
11. Il vino si serve da destra prendendo la bottiglia da sotto oppure con le dita leggermente sulla pancia. Se ne versa un po' al referente in attesa del suo okay.
12. Si parte dalla donna più anziana e via via si procede con le più giovani fino a ritornare al referente, il quale riceve per ultimo. Un'eccezione può essere costituita nell'ordine da un festeggiato oppure da un eventuale prelato, che andrebbero serviti per primi.
13. La procedura di servizio si effettua in senso orario. Quando si serve, per evitare la caduta di gocce sul tavolo o sui vestiti, nel momento in cui si verticalizza la
bottiglia la si ruota leggermente e si pulisce con il torciolo.
14. A questo punto si torna al tavolo di servizio dove si lascia l'etichetta rivolta
verso il tavolo del cliente, sempre ben visibile. Si può finalmente togliere il tappo
dal cavatappi utilizzando il torciolo, così non si impregna di aromi e odori per il
vino successivo.

with tears, I mean, with an emotion.” That’s how Ettore Sottsass started off the exhibition for his ninety years, the only one in Italy. It will definitely be “exciting”, but not exactly “small”: the sections, that can be viewed in the halls of the ‘Pescheria’, are as much
as seven and will be accompanied by a “homage” in the ‘Sala del Trono’ (hall of the
throne) of the Miramare Castle where a small selection of Ettore Sottsass’ works will
foster a dialogue with the ambience of the past of this historical residence. The selection of the works for the exhibition has been done in a radical way, in order to highlight the production by Sottsass which best embodies his sensibility and best evokes
what have been his points of reference on a design and human level. The selection
of 130 works, all coming from Italian and European private collections (some of them
will be displayed to the public for the first time ever), will not follow a chronological
path. The will, instead, be arranged as fragments that give shape to the great
“magic of the work” animating the entire production of this architect/artist.

“Io penso ad una mostra piccola ma molto emozionante; mi piacerebbe che uscissero piangendo, cioè con un’emozione”. Così Ettore Sottsass ha dato il via all’unica
mostra italiana per i suoi novanta anni. “Emozionante” lo sarà certamente, “piccola” non proprio: ben sette le sezioni previste nello spazio dell’ex Pescheria accompagnate da un “omaggio” nella Sala del Trono del Castello di Miramare, dove una
piccola selezione della produzione di Ettore Sottsass intesserà un dialogo con le
atmosfere del passato di questa storica residenza. Nella selezione delle opere destinate all’esposizione sono state attuate delle scelte radicali, proprio per focalizzare
l’attenzione sulla produzione di Sottsass che è riuscita maggiormente ed incarnare
la sua sensibilità ed evocare i riferimenti progettuali ed umani del suo lavoro. Le 130
opere selezionate, provenienti tutte da collezioni private italiane ed europee (alcuni pezzi saranno esposti per la prima volta al pubblico), non seguiranno un percorso cronologico per porsi invece come frammenti atti a ricostruire quella grande
“magia dell’opera” che anima tutta la produzione di questo architetto/artista.

Pittura, ceramica, vetro, design, illuminazione, interventi nell’architettura sino alla ricerca delle energie solari e alternative sono i campi di interesse di questo poliedrico artista che più volte ha partecipato alla Biennale di Venezia
e alla Triennale di Milano. Sin dal 1950 Vianello è considerato come un ingegnoso sperimentatore e inventore di
forme nel mondo del vetro e del design, un interesse che lo accompagna tutta la vita e che lo consegna al
mondo dell’arte come uno dei più appartati eppur geniali creatori dell’arte italiana. La mostra presenta una selezionata quanto emblematica scelta di vetri in stretta relazione con alcuni oggetti di design, lampade, ceramiche,
disegnate dall’artista dagli anni Quaranta fino agli anni Ottanta. Le opere sono affiancate dalla documentazione proveniente dall’archivio Toni Follina di Treviso con disegni e schizzi preparatori, documenti e foto d’epoca.

Con questo omaggio a Boccioni prefuturista, nei diversi soggiorni padovani, la città si riappropria di un’illustre
memoria nota agli studiosi, ma ignorata sia dagli stessi padovani che dal grande pubblico degli amatori d’arte.
La mostra ricostruisce il contesto cittadino nel quale acquisteranno plastica evidenza, sia narrativa che espositiva,
quei soggetti che hanno attraversato la vicenda padovana di Umberto Boccioni a partire dalle presenze fondamentali della madre, della sorella, dell’amata Ines e della cugina pittrice Adriana Bisi Fabbri. In questa ricostruzione Padova appare veramente “città materna”, votata agli affetti e alle presenze femminili. Oltre a quadri che
l’artista dipinse a Padova, provenienti da importanti collezioni pubbbliche e private, è in mostra un’accurata selezione di tempere commerciali di gusto liberty che Boccioni dipinse tra il 1903 e il 1905, numerosi disegni di formazione e un ricco materiale documentario costituito da fotografie, oggetti, lettere, documenti.

With this tribute to prefuturist Boccioni, in the several Paduan sojourns, the city recalls an illustrious memory, which
scholars are well aware of, but that was ignored both by the same Paduans and by a vast public of art lovers.
The exhibition reconstructs the city context in which the people who have shared the Paduan life of Umberto
Boccioni, including the fundamental presence of the mother, sister, beloved Ines and cousin painter Adriana Bisi
Fabbri, will acquire plastic evidence, both from a narrative and expositive point of view. In this reconstruction
Padua really looks like the “motherly city”, destined to affections and female presences. Apart from the paintings
painted by the artist in Padua, coming from important public and private collections, an accurate selection of
art nouveau style commercial tempera paintings is displayed, which Boccioni painted from 1903 to 1905, as well
as several educational drawings and plentiful literature including photographs, objects, letters, documents.

The project of the Great Exhibitions "The Birth of the Celestial Empire" (2005 - 2006), the first in the series of major exhibitions
regarding "The Silk Road and Chinese Civilisation" promoted by the Fondazione Cassamarca and the Chinese Academy of
International Culture, will be followed by the second exhibition,"Genghis Khan and The Treasure of the Mongols", from 20
October 2007 to 4 May 2008. 300 of the rarest and most precious finds will be placed on show at the Casa dei Carraresi in
Treviso for the first time. The exhibits come from Chinese museums and recent archaeological excavations in the northern
regions on either side of the Great Wall, where from 907 to 1368, the Wu Dai, Xi Xia, Liao, Song and Yuan Dynasties held sway.

created from the Forties to the Eighties. The works are supplemented by documentation coming from the archive
