Just less than two weeks left before our winter break and two more special school events underway involving all our
students!
Winter Spettacolo
Winter Spettacolo “YE-HA!” taking place on Friday, December 12th @ 19:00 at the Polisportiva Formiginese in
Formigine. Tickets are sold out while you can still purchase a copy of the DVD of the show.
Winter Spettacolo “Young Edition” - Kindergarten, Transition & Grade 1 will take place on Wednesday,
December 17th @ 13:00 in the Gym.
After school activities:
Terza Media Math IT, Chess Club & Good Afternoon club will carry on until end of term.
The Props Making Club will be running on Wednesday, December 10th to allow the team of students & teachers to
complete the last finishing touches for the Winter Spettacolo.
NEW SCHOOL UNIFORMS & SHOP ON-LINE
Many of our students & parents may remember last year’s Grade 8 assembly on “Raising Awareness on Modern
Slavery”. One of the topics discussed and raised by the Grade 8 students, today Grade 9, was the need to change
part of the school uniforms in order to guarantee higher quality and transparency on the production.
We are pleased to announce that ISM and its students have taken ACTION and we are ready to introduce the new
ISM uniforms starting from January 2015. Some samples of the new school uniform are on display in the school
entrance and the complete range of garments is available online and can be purchased directly through the producer.
Complete details are available in the newsletter. All former uniforms will be welcome in school but from January
2015 only the new uniforms will be available for purchase.
We would like to remind our parents of our school uniform and dress code as clearly stated in our Student/Parent
Handbook:
Uniform: Students are expected to wear the school uniform which consists of a blue polo shirt and a royal blue
sweatshirt/hooded top (Kindergarten to Grade 9) and a white polo shirt and a dark blue sweatshirt/hooded top
(Grades 10 & 11). All students can wear dark blue or black shorts, trousers or skirts. This includes tidy jeans (no
holes or ripped jeans allowed). Shorts: students can wear shorts to school during the hot weather but they should
be dark/blue. Shorts should also be of an appropriate length (mid-thigh), even with leggings underneath. Hot
pants are not appropriate in the school setting. No hats or headscarves are to be worn inside the school, except for
religious purposes. We encourage students to wear hats outside on hot, sunny days.
Leavers & extended absences
Please make sure you have informed the school office with enough notice if your family is relocating in order for the
school to produce the transfer certificates and/or any documentation required.
Those families who will be missing 1 or more school days due to extended family holidays need to inform the school
with at least one week notice.
Lastly, we would like to inform you that dr. Paolo Formiga, our Managing Director, and I have met with the Mayor of
Castelnuovo Rangone, Mr. Bruzzi, last week. We have raised the concerns over the public parking and have been
assured by the Mayor that he will be looking into the issue as it is a matter of public security. He will be discussing the
problem with the Maresciallo of the Carabinieri and inform us of the actions that can be taken to resolve the ongoing
problem. In the meantime, please make sure you do not leave any valuables and/or visible items in the cars parked
during pick-up.

REMINDERS
Attendance – from the Student/parent Handbook
Learning at the International School of Modena is very interactive, requiring the participation and
interaction of the students with each other and with the teachers. This is adversely affected when a
child is absent – not only for that child in particular but for the dynamics of the whole class.
Of course some absences, such as illness, are unavoidable, but others lie within the family’s priorities.
Please see Extended Absences below.
The Absence forms, in the Home/School Diary, must be completed for a single day of absence or to
cover a period of absence. The Absence forms must be filled out and one part returned to the
school office.
Please remember that if your child has been absent for 6 days or more in a row, a doctor’s note
stating that the child is well enough to attend school must be produced before the child is allowed
to return to school. Weekends add to the total number of days only if they are in the middle of the
sickness time (i.e. a child is sick from Thursday until following Wednesday)
Absences/Tardies
Punctuality is important both as a matter of courtesy and to prevent disruption of classes caused by the
arrival of latecomers. If a student is late she/he misses the important beginning of the school day.
Chronic tardiness prohibits learning for all students. Please show respect for your child’s learning
as well as the other students’ and be on time.
Please refer to the Whole School Behaviour Expectations Document.
If a child is absent or will be late, parents are asked to telephone (or mail) the school before 8:30
and fill out the Late/Early dismissal Absence forms from the Home/School Diary. One part is to be
returned to the office.
Extended Absences
If a student will be away from school for an extended period of time (3 days or more) the parent should
notify the School Manager in writing, by using the Absence forms, stating the dates and reason for the
absence.
Please ensure that at least one week’s notice is given before the extended absence takes place.
Students will be responsible for completing the following during extended absences:
A written daily journal/diary describing their experiences while out of school;
Collecting brochures, maps, ticket stubs, etc. to share upon returning to school;
Any work assigned by the teacher (not all teachers will assign work during absences);
Parents are asked to avoid scheduling family holidays during term time, as it is disruptive to the
student’s progress and to the rest of the class.
Students who miss more than 20 days of school for reasons other than illness will be retained and
will repeat their current grade in the 2014-2015 school year.
Students who miss more than 35 days of school for any reason, illness included, will be retained
and will repeat their current grade in the 2014-2015 school year.

Winter Spettacolo
Lo spettacolo d’inverno (recita) – “YE-HA!” si svolgerà venerdì 12 dicembre presso la Polisportiva Formiginese alle
ore 19:00. I BIGLIETTI SONO ESAURITI mentre è ancora possibile ordinare una copia del DVD.
Spettacolo d’Inverno edizione “Young” (Kindergarten, Transition & Grade 1) si terrà mercoledì 17 dicembre nella
palestra alle ore 13:00.
Attività dopo scuola
Matematica Italiana per la Terza Media, Club di Scacchi e Good Afternoon Club proseguiranno fino alla sospensione
per le vacanze.
Il Props making Club del mercoledì pomeriggio si svolgerà anche mercoledì 10 dicembre per permettere agli studenti
e staff coinvolti di ultimare i preparativi per il Winter Spettacolo.
NUOVA UNIFORME SCOLASTICA E SHOP ON-LINE
Molti dei ns. studenti e genitori si ricorderanno della assemblea e presentazione dello scorso anno del Grade 8 “Per
accrescere l’attenzione sulla schiavitù moderna”. Uno degli argomenti trattati dal Grade 8, oggi Grade 9, fu la
richiesta di cambiare l’uniforme scolastica per garantirne migliore qualità e transparenza nella produzione.
Siamo lieti di annunciare che ISM e i suoi studenti si sono ATTIVATI e siamo pronti per introdurre la nuova uniforme
ISM a partire da gennaio 2015. Alcuni campioni sono disponibili e visionabili nell’ingresso della scuola e l’intera
gamma di prodotti sarà visionabile e acquistabile online direttamente dal produttore. I dettagli completi sono inclusi
nella newsletter. Le uniformi attuali continueranno ad essere accolte a scuola ma da Gennaio 2015 solo le uniformi
nuove saranno disponibili per l’acquisto.
Rammentiamo ai ns. genitori l’uniforme e coodice di abbigliamento in vigore nella ns. Scuola come chiaramente
specificato nel Manuale Studente/Genitore:
Uniformi: agli studenti è richiesto di indossare l’uniforme scolastica che consiste nella polo blu e nella felpa/felpa con
cappuccio blu (da Kindergarten a Grade 9) e nella polo bianca e nella felpa con cappuccio blu scuro (Grades 10 & 11).
Tutti gli studenti possono indossare pantaloncini, pantaloni o gonne nere o blu scuro. Sono compresi jeans classici
(senza buchi e senza strappi). Pantaloncini corti: gli studenti possono indossare pantaloncini corti durante la
stagione calda purchè di colore scuro/blu. I pantaloncini corti devono essere inoltre di lunghezza appropriata (a
metà coscia) anche se indossati sopra i leggings. Gli shorts corti non sono appropriati per la scuola. Cappelli e
copricapi non possono essere indossati all’interno della scuola, se non per motivi religiosi. Gli studenti sono
incoraggiati ad usare cappelli all’aperto nelle giornate calde e soleggiate.
Partenze & assenze estese
Assicuratevi di aver informato la segreteria scolastica qualora la vs. famiglia sia in partenza dalla scuola in modo che la
scuola abbia i tempi per produrre i certificati di trasferimento ed altri documenti richiesti.
Inoltre, le famiglie che perderanno uno o più giorni scolastici a causa di vacanze di famiglia estese sono pregati di
informare la segreteria scolastica con almeno una settimana di anticipo.
Infine, vorremmo informarvi che la scorsa settimana, il dr. Paolo Formiga, Amministratore Delegato ISE, insieme alla
sottoscritta ha incontrato il Sindaco di Castelnuovo Rangone, sig. Bruzzi, per discutere della mancanza di sicurezza del
parcheggio pubblico esterno. Il Sindaco ci ha confermato che avrebbe discusso della problematica con il Maresciallo
dei Carabinieri visto che trattasi di pubblica sicurezza e ci avrebbe informato sulle eventuali azioni intraprese al fine di
risolvere la questione. Nel frattempo vi chiediamo di prestare la massima attenzione e non lasciare alcun oggetto di
valore nelle auto parcheggiate durante l’uscita degli studenti.

IMPORTANTE
Frequenza – dal manuale studente/genitore
L’apprendimento all’International School of Modena è molto interattivo e richiede la partecipazione e
l’interazione degli studenti con gli altri e con gli insegnanti. L’assenza del bambino ha un effetto
negativo – non solo per il bambino in sé ma anche per le dinamiche dell’intera classe.
Sicuramente alcune assenza, come la malattia, sono inevitabili ma altre dipendono dalle priorità
famigliari. Vi preghiamo di fare riferimento all’Assenze Prolungate di seguito.
Il modulo delle Assenze, nel Diario scolastico, deve essere compilato anche per un solo giorno di
assenza o per coprire un periodo di assenza. Il modulo delle Assenze deve essere compilato e una
parte deve essere consegnata in segreteria.
Vi ricordiamo che se vostro figlio è assente per più di 6 giorni di fila è necessario fornire un
certificato medico che dichiari la buona salute fisica dello studente prima che gli sia permesso di
rientrare a scuola. I giorni festivi contribuiscono al calcolo dei giorni malattia solo se cadono nel corso
della malattia (per esempio se un bambino è malato da giovedì fino al mercoledì successivo).
Assenze/Ritardi
La puntualità è importante sia per una questione di educazione sia per prevenire l’interruzione delle
lezioni causate dall’arrivo dei ritardatari. Se uno studente è in ritardo perde l’importante inizio della
giornata. Il ritardo cronico impedisce agli studenti di apprendere. Vi chiediamo di rispettare
l’apprendimento di vostro figlio e degli altri studenti e di essere puntuali.
Vi invitiamo a fare riferimento al documento sulle Aspettative di Comportamento di tutta la scuola.
Se un bambino è assente o è in ritardo, i genitori devono informare telefonicamente (o via email) la
segreteria prima delle 8:30 e compilare il modulo di ingresso posticipato/anticipato che si trova nel
libretto delle assenze nel Diario Scolastico. Una parte deve essere consegnata alla segreteria.
Assenze Prolungate
Se uno studente sarà assente da scuola per un periodo esteso (oltre i 3 giorni) il genitore deve informare
per iscritto lo School Manager, usando il modulo delle Assenze, segnalando data e ragione dell’assenza.
Assicuratevi che sia dato un preavviso di almeno una settimana prima dell’assenza prolungata.
Agli studenti sarà richiesto di completare le seguenti attività nel corso dell’assenza prolungata:
Scrivere un diario quotidiano descrivendo le esperienze fatte fuori da scuola;
Raccogliere brochures, mappe, biglietti, ecc. da condividere al rientro a scuola;
Qualsiasi compito assegnato dall’insegnante (non tutti gli insegnanti assegneranno compiti durante le
assenze);
Ai genitori è richiesto di evitare di pianificare vacanze famigliari al di fuori delle vacanze scolastiche
poiché interferisce sul progresso dello studente e della classe.
Gli studenti che perdono più di 20 giorni di scuola per ragioni diverse dalla malattia dovranno
ripetere l’anno frequentato nel 2014-2015.
Gli studenti che perdono più di 35 giorni di scuola per qualsiasi ragione, inclusa la malattia,
dovranno ripetere l’anno frequentato nel 2014-2015.

NEW POLICY ON LIBRARY FINES FOR OVERDUE/LOST BOOKS
Please note our new policy on fines for overdue and lost library books that will be applicable from
January 7th 2015.
ISM students may borrow books from our libraries for up to two weeks. After this time they may
renew the books if they wish to keep them for another two weeks.
If the books become overdue the following fines will apply:
5 Euros for books returned between one and two weeks late
10 Euros for books returned over two weeks late or lost/damaged.
This is the effective cost of purchasing a new book.
While fines are owing, the students concerned will not be allowed to take further books out on loan.
Fines will be notified to families and payable in the school office.
NUOVA POLICY DELLA BIBLIOTECA SULLE SANZIONI PER LIBRI CONSEGNATI IN RITARDO/PERSI
Vi informiamo che la nuova policy sulle sanzioni in caso di libri restituiti in ritardo e per i libri persi
sarà in vigore a partire dal 7 gennaio 2015.
Gli studenti ISM possono prendere in prestito libri dalla Biblioteca per due settimane. Oltre questo
tempo, gli studenti possono rinnovare il prestito se desiderano tenere il libro per altre due
settiumane.
Se il libro viene restituito in ritardo, si applicheranno le seguenti sanzioni:
5 euro per i libri restituiti tra una e due settimane in ritardo
10 euro per i libri restituiti oltre 2 settimane in ritardo o per I libri danneggiati/persi.
Questo è il costo effettivo per acquistare nuovamente un nuovo libro.
Finchè non verrà pagata la sanzione, gli studenti interessati non potranno prendere altri libri in
prestito.
Le sanzioni saranno notificate ai genitori e saranno pagabili in segreteria.

Grade 9 presentation on their interdisciplinary unit on First World War
One of the changes to the MYP for the ‘Next Chapter’ is an increased importance for the interdisciplinary units.
Students will now be assessed using not only the subject specific discipline criteria but for certain assessments they
will also be assessed using the new interdisciplinary assessment criteria, which emphasise the skills of synthesis,
reflection and communication. Each MYP student will take at least one interdisciplinary unit per year. The end of year
report will include feedback to parents on these interdisciplinary skills. Grade 9 is the first to work on one of the new
style interdisciplinary units. This term they have been working on First World War related topics in Humanities,
English, French, Italian, Art, and Music. On Wednesday December 17th they will exhibit their work to students from
Grade 5 upwards. Parents of Grade 9 students are also invited to attend between 2pm and 2.45pm.

Uno dei cambiamenti nel programma MYP per il “Next Chapter” è un incremento di importanza nelle unità
interdisciplinari. Gli studenti non saranno valutati usando solo i criteri specifici per la materia ma in alcune prove
saranno valutati usando i nuovi criteri di valutazione interdisciplinari che enfatizzano le abilità di sintesi, riflessione e
comunicazione. Ogni studenti MYP avrà almeno una unità interdisciplinare all’anno. Alla fine dell’anno scolastico, la
pagella includerà il giudizio su queste abilità interdisciplinari. Grade 9 è la prima classe a lavorare su una delle nuove
unità interdisciplinari. Il primo trimestre hanno lavorato sugli argomenti collegati alla Prima Guerra Mondiale in
Discipline Umanistiche, Inglese, Francese, Italiano, Arte e Musica. Mercoledì 17 dicembre mostreranno il loro lavoro
agli studenti da Grade 5 in poi. I genitori di Grade 9 sono invitati a partecipare dalle 14:00 alle 14:45.
REMINDERS
School activity starts at 8:30!
We kindly remind you that school days start at 8:30 sharp. Which means the school activity will
begin exactly at 8:30 and any late comers will be disrupting class. Please try to make an effort and
come in before 8:30 am, children can be dropped off from 8:10 onwards.
L’attività accademica inizia alle 8:30!
Vi ricordiamo che le lezioni iniziano alle 8.30 in punto. Ciò significa che le attività didattiche della
giornata iniziano proprio alle 8:30 e qualsiasi ritardatario si ritroverà ad interrompere
inevitabilmente il lavoro della classe. Vi invitiamo a cercare di arrivare prima delle 8.30, vi
ricordiamo che gli studenti possono arrivare dalle 8:10 in avanti.
WINTER SEASON

PARKING AREA
All parents must use the public parking area outside the school gate at all times.
Please remember to lock your cars and please make sure you don’t leave any personal belongings in
the car.
Internal parking area is reserved for staff only and the bus service.
PARCHEGGIO ESTERNO
Tutti i genitori devono utilizzare sempre il parcheggio all’esterno del cancello. Ricordatevi di
chiudere le portiere dell’auto e non lasciate borse e borsette in macchina. Il parcheggio interno è
riservato allo staff e ai bus scolastici.
