La festa del battesimo di Gesù continua la serie delle
manifestazioni del Signore. Il 25 dicembre Gesù si è
manifestato a Maria, a Giuseppe e ai pastori; il 6
gennaio ai Magi; oggi si manifesta, sulle rive del
Giordano, a Giovanni e al popolo d'Israele. Gesù,
ormai trentenne, aveva lasciato Nazaret e si era recato
nel Sud della Palestina, nella zona del fiume Giordano,
ove il Battista raccoglieva un grande numero di
persone. Quel giorno la scena fu fuori dal comune.
Scrive Luca che tutto il popolo “era in attesa” (3,15);
in attesa di un mondo diverso, con il desiderio di
ascoltare una parola nuova, vera. Per questo, molti
avevano lasciato le loro case e gli abituali impegni:
volevano ascoltare il Battista. Non si può attendere un
mondo nuovo se si continua a fare tutto come prima, se
si resta uguali a se stessi, se si pensano e si fanno le
medesime cose di sempre. Anche Gesù abbandonò la

quel predicatore. C'è bisogno di muoversi, se non

avvicinarsi al Signore. Gesù fece questa scelta a trent'

attesa del suo turno, per il battesimo. Giovanni, con il

giovane nazareno avvicinarsi, intuì che era più forte di
lui, che era il “migliore” di tutti. Comprese che era
colui al quale neppure era degno di sciogliergli i lacci
dei sandali. Secondo la narrazione di Matteo, Giovanni
si schernisce e non vuole battezzarlo. Ma deve cedere
di fronte all'insistenza di Gesù.
In questa festa del battesimo Gesù si manifesta con una
incredibile umiltà. Si potrebbe dire che la povertà e la
pochezza del bambino deposto sulla mangiatoia non
sono scomparse in Gesù adulto. L'umiltà di quel
bambino non è diminuita con la crescita. Per noi
avviene esattamente l'opposto: più cresciamo in età e
più ci sentiamo sapienti, forti e indipendenti. Gesù

termine dei suoi giorni giungerà a mettersi in
ginocchio a lavare i piedi dei discepoli e conoscerà
l'umiliazione terribile della croce. Ha iniziato la vita
adagiato sul legno della mangiatoia e la terminerà
appeso sul legno della croce. È questo il nostro Dio,
quello che si manifesta a noi.
Mentre, raccolto in preghiera, si immerge nell'acqua
sino a scomparire dagli sguardi dei presenti, si aprono i
cieli. È il momento atteso dai profeti. Isaia lo aveva
gridato a voce alta: “Se tu squarciassi i cieli e
scendessi!” (63,19). Questa preghiera viene esaudita in
questo momento. Scrive Luca: “Il cielo si aprì e scese
su di lui lo Spirito Santo” (3,21-22). Il cielo triste
degli uomini viene aperto e si può guardare oltre; un
nuovo orizzonte interviene nella vita degli uomini e si
odono parole mai ascoltate prima: “Tu sei il mio figlio
prediletto, in te mi sono compiaciuto” (v. 22).
Il cielo non è più chiuso. Se ai pastori sono stati gli
angeli a recare l'annuncio, e ai Magi la stella, ora è la
voce stessa di Dio Padre che indica agli uomini il suo
Figlio. Il Vangelo che ascoltiamo ogni domenica non è
altro che l'eco di questa voce che scende dall'alto. A
ragione, perciò, Paolo scrive a Tito, suo discepolo:
“carissimo, è apparsa la grazia di Dio, apportatrice di
salvezza per tutti gli uomini” (2,11). Il Vangelo è salvezza per noi; è una grazia poterlo ascoltare e seguire,
averlo come amico della vita. L'apostolo continua dicendo che “ci insegna a rinnegare l'empietà e i
desideri mondani e a vivere con sobrietà, giustizia e
pietà in questo mondo” (v. 12). Sì, il Vangelo insegna
a vivere. Quei cieli aperti sulle sponde del Giordano si
aprono anche per noi, ora, perché possiamo intraprendere una vita più felice, più bella, più solidale. In
questa festa del battesimo di Gesù vogliamo anche noi
avvicinarci alla predicazione del profeta, per rivivere
la grazia del nostro battesimo. Ci auguriamo che i cieli
si aprano anche per noi oggi e scenda su di noi lo
Spirito Santo per essere trasformati nel profondo del
nostro cuore e di udire anche noi la voce del Padre che
ci chiama e manifesta la sua compiacenza nel vederci
come figli diletti.

Next Sunday,January 17, h 7:30 pm. Ecumenical
Celebration of Prayer for the Unity of Christians with St.
Mark’s Parish (anglican).
It will take place, for the seventh time, in our church at
19:30; a bilingual (English & Italian) booklet prepared
specifically for this occasion will be made available for full
participation; a moment of "fraternity" will follow in our
parish hall.
Working, understanding and sharing together.
