Prima Guerra Mondiale, fronte italiano, avamposto di
alta quota a pochi metri dalla trincea nemica, «così
vicina che pare di udire il loro respiro». Intorno ci sono
soltanto neve e silenzio, dentro nella trincea italiana
il freddo, la paura, la stanchezza, la rassegnazione e
gli ordini insensati che arrivano telefonicamente da
qualche scrivania lontana per mandare i soldati verso
un inutile suicidio. Liberamente ispirato al racconto La
paura di Federico De Roberto, l’ultimo film di Ermanno
Olmi è una ballata malinconica girata interamente
sull’Altopiano di Asiago in occasione del centenario
dalla Grande Guerra. «Credo che la celebrazione del
centenario non abbia alcun senso se non chiediamo
scusa per il tradimento di cui siamo stati colpevoli
nei confronti dei giovani e dei milioni di morti in quel
conflitto», così Ermanno Olmi nel suo video-messaggio
per l’anteprima del suo film. La trincea è come una
tomba di morti, ma lassù, dove sono sparsi migliaia
di cadaveri, «torneranno a pascolare le mucche,
torneranno i prati, e tutto sarà dimenticato».
World War I, on the Italian front: an outpost high in the
mountains, just a few metres from the enemy trenches,
“so close we could almost hear them breathing”. All
around, there is nothing but snow and silence, and
in the Italian trenches there is cold, fear, fatigue,
resignation and the absurd orders that arrive by
telephone from some far-away desk, sending soldiers
toward a pointless suicide. Loosely based on Federico
De Roberto’s La paura, Ermanno Olmi’s last film is a
melancholy ballad filmed entirely on the Asiago high
plains, on the occasion of the hundredth anniversary of
the Great War. “I believe that celebrating the centenary
makes no sense if we don’t apologize for the betrayal
of which we are guilty towards the young people and
the millions who died in that conflict”, declared Ermanno
Olmi in his video-message for the film’s premiere. The
trench is like a tomb of the dead, but up there, where
thousands of corpses are scattered, “the cows will
return to graze, the meadows will grow back, and all will
be forgotten”.

FoStroo, facciamo buio e portiamo il blues, la
musica nera per definizione, in Lessinia. Un'originale
commistione tra la mitologia del Mississippi e quella
dell’altopiano cimbro, con grandi classici del genere
e composizioni originali dove il dialetto della Lessinia
si mescola all’inglese. Nel concerto di anteprima del
XXI Film Festival della Lessinia, Cristiano Zanini, Enrico
Morello e Stefano Sartorelli, i FoStroo Trio, presentano il
loro primo album, Sta tèra.
FoStroo. When darkness falls, we will bring the blues —
the most traditional black music — to the Lessinia. An
original blend of the mythology of the Mississippi Delta
and that of the Cimbran high plains, with great classics
of the genre and original compositions in which Lessinia
dialect mixes freely with English. In the concert marking
the premiere of the XXI Film Festival della Lessinia,
Cristiano Zanini, Enrico Morello and Stefano Sartorelli,
the FoStroo Trio, present their first album, Sta tèra.

Più di centottantamila soldati caddero dal 1915 al 1918
lungo i 640 chilometri del fronte che dallo Stelvio
e dall’Ortles scende verso l’Adamello, le Dolomiti, il
Pasubio e Asiago. Le Alpi diventarono un immenso
cimitero. Enrico Camanni ha raccolto storie di vita e di
guerra in montagna nel libro Il fuoco e il gelo (Editori
Laterza). Lo presenta al FFDL con la partecipazione
straordinaria del cantautore Massimo Bubola che
ripercorre i canti della Grande Guerra.
More than 180,000 soldiers died between 1915 and
1918 along the 640 kilometres of the front that from
the Stelvio and Ortler descends towards the Adamello,
the Dolomites, Pasubio and Asiago. The Alps became
an immense cemetery. Enrico Camanni has gathered
stories of life and war in the mountains in his book, Il
fuoco e il gelo (Editori Laterza). He will present it at the
FFDL with the participation of the singer-songwriter
Massimo Bubola, who revisits the songs of the Great
War.

Il castoro canadese sta provocando danni irreparabili
nella Patagonia cilena, dove fu introdotto settant’anni
fa. In assenza di predatori naturali, i castori si sono
riprodotti a dismisura e con le loro dighe hanno
modificato il paesaggio della Terra del Fuoco.
The Canadian beaver is causing irreparable damage
in Patagonia, in the southernmost part of Chile, where
they were introduced seventy years ago. In the absence
of natural predators, the beavers have reproduced
dramatically and, with their dams, modified the
landscape of the Tierra del Fuego.

Si stima siano più di diecimila i morti causati dal
terremoto che ha colpito il Nepal il 25 aprile 2015. Dopo
l'immediata risonanza mediatica è calato il silenzio,
ma il dramma continua e si sta moltiplicando. Nelle
valli più isolate, dove nessun soccorritore è ancora
giunto, la popolazione à lasciata a se stessa. Fausto De
Stefani, di ritorno dal Nepal, racconta con immagini e
video questa tragedia dimenticata. Il Film Festival della
Lessinia aderisce alla raccolta di fondi promossa dalla
sua associazione Senza Frontiere ONLUS per l'acquisto
di tende, farmaci, generi di prima necessità e per

It is estimated that the earthquake that hit Nepal on
April 25, 2015 caused more than ten thousand deaths.
After the immediate media boom came silence, but
the drama continues and is multiplying. In the most
isolated valleys, where still no rescuers have arrived,
the population has been left to fend for itself. Fausto
De Stefani, returning from Nepal, tells of this forgotten
tragedy with pictures and videos. The Film Festival
della Lessinia joins the fundraising organised by his
association, Senza Frontiere ONLUS, for the purchase
of tents, medicines, and basic necessities, and for
targeted interventions. This is a project for long-term
aid and for continuous, enduring response to an

padre oppressivo. Come punizione per aver portato il
suo giovane fratello nel bosco, viene mandato per tre
mesi a lavorare duramente in una sperduta fattoria di
montagna. Ma il contadino che dovrebbe prendersi
cura di lui, nasconde una ben altra realtà.
Matteo is a fragile boy of fifteen, obsessed by an
oppressive father. As punishment for having taken his
younger brother into the woods, he is sent away for
three months of hard labour on a remote mountain
farm. But the farmer who is to look after him hides a
much different reality.

Four friends with a passion for music and street art got
together in 2013, and the result is Jenny Penny Full.
Their sound is a distinctive mixture of folk, reggae and
funk, with strong, simple bass lines and drums, airy and
thumping riffs, and vocals that combine psychedelic
echoes with refined, melodic tracts.

Nel villaggio sulle steppe tibetane, il padre della piccola
Yangchen si rifiuta di far visita a suo nonno ammalato,
che vive in una caverna ed è considerato un santo. La
madre della bambina è incinta e vuole soltanto un po’ di
pace. Così la piccola si affeziona a un agnellino.
In a village on the Tibetan steppes, the father of little
Yangchen refuses to visit hes sick grandfather, who
lives in a cave and is considered a saint. The girl's
mother is pregnant and just wants a bit of peace. And
so, the little girl takes a liking to a lamb.

Negli anni Ottanta, Giuseppe Sandrini e Aldo
Ottaviani attraversano il Tibet, visitando i monasteri
buddisti e arrivando fino all’eremo di Rongbuk, ai
piedi dell’Everest. Trent’anni dopo raccontano la loro
esperienza con il libro fotografico Tibet e ritorno
(Edizioni Alba Pratalia). Quale distanza di pensiero ci
separa da quel mondo lontano? È possibile immaginare
da qui una filosofia dell’altezza? Sono gli interrogativi
ai quali prova a rispondere, insieme a loro, la filosofa

In the 1980s, Giuseppe Sandrini and Aldo Ottaviani
crossed Tibet, visiting Buddhist monasteries and
reaching the temple of Rongbuk, at the foot of Mount
Everest. Thirty years later they recount their experience

separates us from that faraway land? Is it possible, from
here, to imagine a philosophy of height? These are the

Vivere sulle pendici dell’Etna per la famiglia di Toti
Domina e Tiziana Cicero e i loro cinque figli è stata
una scelta di vita che, nel tempo, si è trasformata in
un progetto di cura dell’ambiente e di ospitalità. La
presenza del “gigante” è permeante, capita che ti
svegli la mattina e tutto all’esterno, alberi e orto, auto
e fotovoltaico, si è coperto di uno strato di terra nera.
Toti e Tiziana, con eccezionali fotografie e video,
raccontano cosa significa essere “ospitati” da una
terra meravigliosa, fertile, a volte estrema, faticosa,

To live on the slopes of Etna was, for Toti Domina and
Tiziana Cicero and their children, a life choice that over
time transformed into an environmental protection
and hospitality project. The presence of the “giant” is
permeating: at times, one awakes in the morning and
everything outside, trees and gardens, cars and solar
panels, is covered by a layer of black earth. Toti and
Tiziana, with exceptional photographs and videos,
tell what it means to be "hosted" by this wonderful,
fertile, at times extreme and tiring, but inspiring land in

Nel cuore delle montagne Talish in Azerbaigian, Pokuza
sogna di sposarsi. Sorda, non è mai andata a scuola

Buthan, la giovane Lhamo viene arrestata. Il tempo di
reclusione che le si apre davanti è una metafora della
pratica di meditazione buddista Lo Sum Choe Sum che
consta di tre anni e tre mesi di meditazione.
During a bus trip in the mountains of Buthan, young
Lhamo is arrested. The time of imprisonment that
unfolds before her is a metaphor for the Buddhist
practice, Lo Sum Choe Sum, which consists of three
years and three months of meditation.

di Bering. All'ombra della montagna ha visto traffici

pregano, alpinisti che sfidano il cielo. Con le immagini
del documentario La montagna per me racconta la
montagna che ha dentro di sé.
The reporter Giorgio Fornoni has documented cocaine
processing in Peru, gold and diamond trafficking in
the former Zaire, the evacuation of Liberia and Angola,
and the life of Taliban guerrillas in Afghanistan, the
last Russian military outpost on the Island of Bering.
In the shadow of the mountains he has seen illegal
trafficking, wars, refugees, revolutions, praying monks,
and Alpinists who challenge the sky. With the images
of the documentary, La montagna per me, he recounts the
mountains within him.

musicisti del suo ensemble per una notte mediterranea

Jamal Ouassini returns to the FFDL for a musical
journey with roots in the era of a happy Andalusia, a
time when Jews and Muslims, guests of Christian Spain,
created poetry and music with extraordinary symbiosis
and simplicity. Jamal Ouassini has reunited the
musicians of his ensemble for a Mediterranean night in
the Lessinia.

A landing on the island of Vulcano at the break of dawn
on a winter morning. The sad song, the sound of the
boat. The island is awakened, but a flash of lightening
announces a storm and the crater unleashes smoke,
lava, and lapilli into the sky.

Stromboli - Terra di Dio con Ingrid Bergman.
Maddalena, a former prostitute, returns to the island
dominated by the volcano, where she is warmly
received by her sister Maria, but not by the other
inhabitants. Filmed on Vulcano, and starring Anna
Magnani, this work marked the rupture between the
actress and Roberto Rossellini who during the same
period was shooting Stromboli - Terra di Dio, with
Ingrid Bergman.

cannibale. Il secondo episodio è girato sull’Etna.
Two parallel episodes: the story of a middle-class family
headed by a Fascist father whose son is devoured
by pigs and that of a starving youth who wanders a
desolate volcanic landscape where he will become a
cannibal. The second part was filmed on Mount Etna.

«Vivere ospitati dall’Etna, mutevole sempre, con i suoi ruggiti, i boati
cavernosi, gli spettacoli di fumo, le colate incandescenti, il fiato solforoso,
la terra nera è un dono», dice Toti Domina che con la sua famiglia vive, in
una casa di paglia, sulle pendici del vulcano siciliano. Nelle sue fotografie,
esposte per la prima volta, si trova il suo sguardo privilegiato e attento.
Sono scatti nati nell’osservazione quotidiana e continua, che svelano un
profondo incanto, lasciando intatto il mistero del “gigante”.
"Living on Etna, ever changing with its roars, cavernous booms, spectacles
of smoke and incandescent lava, the sulphurous breath, and the black
earth, is a gift", states Toti Domina, who lives with his family in a straw
house on the slopes on the Sicilian volcano. In his photographs, shown
here for the first time, we find his privileged, attentive point of view. They
are shots that come from daily, continuous observation, revealing a deep
enchantment, but leaving intact the mystery of the "giant".
