Ghislanzoni PERSONAGGI PRINCIPALI Radamès, condottiero dellesercito egizio Aida, schiava di Amneris nonché figlia del Re Etiope Amneris, figlia del faraone Amonasro, Re dEtiopia e padre di Aida Ramfis, grande sacerdote egizio Atto primo. Gli etiopi stanno per attaccare lEgitto e il gran sacerdote Ramfis annuncia che gli dei hanno già provveduto ad indicare il guerriero che guiderà lesercito egizio contro gli invasori, ma non ne fa ancora il nome: Radames spera di essere lui il prescelto per poter tornare trionfante e dedicare la vittoria allamata Aida, figlia del re dEtiopia, ma attualmente schiava di Amneris, figlia del faraone. Questultima sopraggiunge seguita appunto dalla sua schiava: ella teme che anche Aida, come lei, sia innamorata di Radames, ma per il momento dissimula la sua gelosia. Mentre Aida è combattuta tra lamore per Radames e quello per suo padre e per il suo popolo, Radames viene ufficialmente insignito, con le dovute cerimonie presso il tempo di Vulcano, del ruolo di condottiero delle truppe egizie. Atto secondo. Una volta avuta conferma, a mezzo di un tranello, dei reali sentimenti di Aida per Radames, Amneris le giura vendetta. Intanto Radames, uscito vincitore dallo scontro con gli Etiopi, sfila trionfante davanti al faraone. Incoronato da Amneris egli, come in diritto di ogni condottiero vincitore, decide di intercedere a favore dei prigionieri, tra cui si trova Amonasro, padre di Aida, ma le proteste dei sacerdoti impediscono al faraone di assecondare per intero la sua richiesta: i prigionieri vengono liberati, ma Aida ed Amonasro vengono trattenuti in ostaggio. Ed un altro premio viene dato al trionfatore, tanto indesiderato quanto irrifiutabile: la mano di Amneris. Atto terzo. Mentre Amneris prega nel tempio di Iside per le sue imminenti e tanto desiderate nozze, Amonasro, scoperto il sentimento di Aida per Radames, cerca di convincerla a carpire al nemico le sue prossime mosse per riuscire ad anticiparlo e rovesciare le sorti della battaglia. Aida si trova di nuovo stretta tra due fuochi, ma decide di cedere, seppur a malincuore, alle richieste paterne: Amonasro spia, non visto, il colloquio tra i due innamorati in cui Radames svela, inconsapevolmente, ad Aida ciò che il nemico attendeva di sapere. Rendendosi poi conto, una volta mostratosi Amonasro, daver involontariamente tradito la patria si consegna al sacerdote Ramfis per espiare la sua colpa. Atto quarto. Radames, in carcere, riceve la visita di Amneris, che lo invita a dimenticare Aida in cambio della liberazione. Ma il soldato si rifiuta di cedere al ricatto e va incontro a testa alta alla propria condanna: morire sepolto vivo nella cripta del Tempio di Vulcano. Una volta portato al sepolcro e calata una grossa pietra sullapertura, Radames si rende conto di non essere stato lasciato solo davanti al crudele destino: Aida, infatti, è entrata in precedenza nella cripta non vista e ora, serenamente, affronta la morta tra le braccia del suo amato, mentre, sopra di loro, nel Tempio Amneris leva il suo lamento. Ghislanzoni MAIN CHARACTERS Radamès, captain of the Egyptian guard Aida, slave of Amneris and daughter of the Ethiopian King Amonasro Amneris, daughter of the Pharaoh Amonasro, King of Ethiopia, Aida's father Ramphis, head of the High Priests Act One. The Ethiopians are threatening to invade Egypt. The High Priest Ramphis announces that the Gods have chosen the warrior, who is going to lead the Egyptian army against the invaders. Radamès hopes to be chosen to dedicate his triumph to his beloved Aida. Amneris appears on the scene followed by Aida and secretly fears that her slave returns Radamès love. Aida is divided between her love for him and that for her father Amonasro and her people. Radamès is officially entitled as head of the Egyptian army with a sacred ceremony at the Volcanos temple. Act two. Amneris swears vengeance against Aida, once she discovers that her slave is truly in love with Radamès. In the meanwhile the Egyptians celebrate Radamès victory over the Ethiopians. As commander of the Egyptian troops he expresses his wish to intercede in favour of the prisoners, among whom there is also Amonasro, Aidas father. But the priests do not agree and the Pharaoh decides to set free all the prisoners except Aida and Amonasro. As reward for his victory Radamès is conferred the hand of Amneris. Act three. While Amneris is praying in the temple of Isis for her imminent and desired wedding, Amonasro tries to persuade his daughter to take advantage of Radamès love for her and to discover the route the Egyptian forces will use to invade Ethiopia. Aida decides in the end to surrender to her fathers request and let Amonasro hear not seen her speech with Radamès. When the captain reveals the military secret, Amonasro appears from his hiding place. Radamès realizes he has betrayed unaware his homeland and decides to atone for his betrayal by allowing himself to be taken prisoner. Act four. Radamès is visited by Amneris: he should forget Aida in exchange of his freedom. But he refuses to accept and is ready to face his destiny: he will be buried alive under the altar of the god Volcano. When he arrives at the sepulchre and a big stone is put to cover the entrance, Radamès realizes he is not alone: Aida is concealed in the chamber and is ready to die with her beloved, while Amneris above them in the temple is mourning Radamès death. Akt. Die Äthiopier drohen mit einem neuen Krieg gegen Ägypten. Der Oberpriester Ramphis hat die Göttin Isis befragt und weiß nun, wer der Heerführer sein wird. Radamès, Hauptmann der Wache, hofft der Auserwählte zu sein. Er träumt, als Sieger zu seiner geliebten Aida zurückzukehren und sie aus der Sklaverei zu befreien. Aida ist zwischen ihrer Liebe für Radamès und der für ihre äthiopische Heimat zerrissen. Die ägyptische Königstochter Amneris liebt Radamès und ist entschlossen, ihn für sich zu gewinnen. Sie vermutet aber in Aida eine Konkurrentin. Radamès wird zum Führer des ägyptischen Heeres ernannt. Aida erkennt verzweifelt, daß ein Sieg des Geliebten Not und Verzweiflung über ihr Volk bringen wird. 2. Akt. Amneris schwört Rache, als sich ihre Vermutung über die Liebe von Aida für Radamès für richtig erweist. In der Zwischenzeit hat Radamès gesiegt. Die Ägypter feiern den Sieg über die Äthiopier. Der ägyptische König verspricht dem Sieger einen Preis und Radamès fordert die Freilassung aller Gefangenen. Die Priester erwidern mit der Forderung der Vernichtung aller Feinde. Ramphis kommt zu einem Kompromiß: die Gefangenen werden freigelassen, Aida und ihr Vater Amonasro bleiben Geiseln. Als Preis bietet der König Radamès die Hand seiner Tochter Amneris an und bestimmt ihn zum künftigen Herrscher über Ägypten. 3. Akt. Die Nacht vor ihrer Hochzeit betet Amneris beim Tempel der Isis. Noch hofft sie, von Radamès geliebt zu werden. Amonasro plant einen neuen Krieg gegen Ägypten und zwingt seine Tochter, Radamès den Schlachtplan Ägyptens zu entlocken. Als Radamès erscheint, lauscht Amonasro heimlich das Gespräch zwischen beiden Geliebten. Um ihre Liebe zu retten, überredet Aida Radamès zur Flucht. Doch mit dem Fluchtplan verrät Radamès auch das Kriegsgeheimnis an Amonasro, der sein Versteck verläßt und sich als König der Äthiopier zu erkennen gibt. Radamès begreift seinen unbewußten Verrat und stellt sich dem Oberpriester und der Pharaonentochter. Aida und Amonasro können fliehen. 4. Akt. Amneris verspricht Radamès seine Begnadigung zu erbitten, wenn er auf Aida verzichtet. Doch Radamès weigert sich. Er wird als Landesverräter vor dem Tribunal der Priester durch Einmauern zum Tode verurteilt. Er wird lebendig begraben. Als der Eingang des Grabes über ihm durch einen Stein geschlossen wird, fühlt Radamès, daß er nicht allein ist. Aida, bereit ihm in den Tod zu folgen, hatte sich in das Verließ geschlichen. Im Angesicht des Todes erfüllt sich ihre Liebe. Amneris bittet verzweifelt um Frieden für den Geliebten. W W W. V E R O N AT I C K E T .
