Quest’anno il Porretta Soul Festival va a ritrovare le radici della musica soul a
Muscle Shoals, Alabama quasi al confine con il Tennessee. Ancora una volta una
esclusiva europea ma con un valore aggiunto: è appena uscito in America
ma in questi giorni anche in Italia il film che celebra questo stile musicale e nella
quattro giorni del festival (17-20 Luglio) il film verrà presentato anche a Porretta
con la presenza di alcuni musicisti che hanno preso parte al film/documentario
ovvero la Muscle Shoals All Star Band, i leggendari musicisti che hanno creato
il sound dei grandi successi di Aretha Franklin, Wilson Pickett, Etta James, Bob
Dylan, Elton John, Rod Stewart, Paul Simon, Traffic, Rolling Stones, Lynyrd
Skynyrd, Drive-By Truckers e tanti altri. A Porretta saranno presenti ben 15
musicisti che includono gli originali Swampers: David Hood e Jimmy Johnson,
Mickey Buckins, Will McFarlane, N.C. Thurman, Lynn Williams e la Muscle Shoals
Horn Section con gli arrangiamenti di Charles Rose. Confermati soul singers
decisamente “southern” come Denise LaSalle e Jerry Jones (ex Brothers
Unlimited) e grandi blue-eyed soul singers come Jimmy Hall (già leader dei Wet
Willie), Carla “Kozmic Mama” Russell ma anche soul singers tradizionali come
Chilly Bill Rankin, Theo Huff, Toni Green, Vaneese Thomas oltre alla Frank Bey
& Anthony Paule. Special guest il leggendario Guitar Shorty, mentore ed ex
cognato di Jimi Hendrix. Come consuetudine è stata invitata una band giovanile
americana e quest’anno si tratta della Quincy Avenue Rhythm Band della Kent
Denver School di Denver, Colorado, band che il prestigioso DownBeat magazine
ha nominato miglior band giovanile degli States anche per il 2014.
Sarà presente anche una band europea e quest’anno è stata privilegiata la
Grecia con la presenza della Blues Therapy Band di Atene.
Scriveva qualche tempo fa l’indimenticabile Ernesto De Pascale
“……Poche ore di macchina da Nashville direzione sud e sei a Muscle Shoals,
in Alabama, un luogo ancora oggi abitato da disaffezionati ragazzi con la
country music che gli ronza nelle orecchie. I mussels sono quelli raccolti dal
letto del grasso fiume Tenneessee che fende in due l’area di Florence, a nord,
e il triangolo di Tuscumbia/Sheffield/ Muscle Shoals, a Sud. La zona, descritta
a suo tempo come “una schifosissima selva di stazioni di benzina fantasma,
malinconica precarietà e bitume bruciato misto a polv ere alzata dal vento“,
dette nella metà degli anni sessanta alla luce un profondissimo inconfondibile
stile Rhythm & Blues che testimonia, inadulterato ed intatto fino ai giorni nostri,
il segno della presenza di quei luoghi nel grande libro della musica.
Esso fu quasi esclusivamente scritto, arrangiato e prodotto da bianchi cresciuti
a country ‘n’ western: nessun caso parallelo esiste nella storia del Rhythm &
Blues di una scena nata da risorse così limitate e, sulla carta, perdenti.
Ma chi è questa gente bianca nata con il Rhythm & Blues nelle vene che dice di
detestare a morte il country? Sono per lo più sudisti rozzi, dall’accento hillybilly
duro e inascoltabile. Il produttore Jerry Wexler dice di loro: “Nessuno di quei
bastardi ha il coraggio di ammettere di essere impregnato di country music ma
chiedete loro di suonare una frase country e loro lo rifaranno perfettamente!”.
A conferma di questo basta riascoltare i capolavori di Dan Penn degli anni
sessanta come “It Tears Me Up“ per Percy Sledge, “Do Right woman“ per
Aretha Franklin, “Dark end of the Street” per James Carr, per dare ragione al
vecchio capo dell’Atlantic.”

Situato lungo il fiume Tennessee, Muscle Shoals, Alabama è l’improbabile
terreno fertile di alcune delle musiche più creative e provocatorie dell’America.
Sotto l’influenza spirituale del “fiume di canto”, come era chiamato dai nativi
americani, la musica di Muscle Shoals ha contribuito a creare alcuni delle più
importanti e risonanti canzoni di tutti i tempi. Al suo cuore c’è Rick Hall, che ha
fondato i FAME Studios. Superando una schiacciante povertà e delle tragedie
impressionanti, Hall ha messo insieme il bianco e nero nel calderone delle
ostilità razziali dell’Alabama per creare una musica per le generazioni.
È responsabile della creazione del “Muscle Shoals sound” e di The Swampers, la
band di casa a Fame, che alla fine ha avviato un proprio studio di successo, noto
come il Muscle Shoals Sound. Greg Allman, Bono, Clarence Carter, Mick Jagger,
Etta James, Alicia Keys, Keith Richards, Percy Sledge e altri, testimoniano nel
film omonimo il magnetismo di Muscle Shoals, il suo mistero e spiegano perché
ancora oggi rimane influente. E’ una incredibile opportunità per Porretta
quella di presentare questi leggendari musicisti ( ben 15) che rappresentano
veramente una pietra miliare per la musica soul e non solo.

Denise LaSalle
Icona del “southern soul”, sin dal suo
primo hit “Trapped By A Thing Called
Love” (1971) proprio adesso ripreso da
Jim Jarmush nel suo ultimo film “Solo
Gli Amanti Sopravvivono”, Denise ha
ancora un enorme seguito nell’ambiente
“black”. Ha inciso agli studi di Willie
Mitchell, poi lunghi anni alla Malaco,
è entrata nel 2011 nella Blues Hall of
Fame e nel 2013 and 2014 ha avuto la
nomination ai Blues Music Award nella
‘Soul Blues Female Artist’ category.
I suoi primi album per la Westbound
Records arrangiati dal genio di Bowlegs
Miller e di Willie Mitchell come “On The
Loose” e “Trapped By A Thing Called
Love” sono irrinunciabili ma anche “Still
Trapped” del 1990 che contiene “ Drop

Dywane Thomas e la chitarra di Michael
Toles non può sfuggirvi.

Fenomenale chitarrista, mentore e
cognato di Jimi Hendrix (nel 1960 aveva
sposato Marsha Hendrix, sorellastra
di Jimi. Dice …riconosco I miei licks
in “Purple Haze” e “Hey Joe.” Jimi
iniziò a dar fuoco alla chitarra perchè
non riusciva a fare quello che facevo
io ! Originario del Texas, notato da
Willie Dixon che lo fece incidere con
Otis Rush, Shorty ha lavorato con Ray
Charles, Sam Cooke, B.B. King, Guitar
Slim e T-Bone Walker. Personaggio
di culto, oggi è uno dei più rispettati
maestri del panorama blues.

Jimmy Hall. Cresciuto nella tradizione
gospel, lui “blue-eyed soul singer”
poco più che ventenne, è stato il
leader della southern rock band Wet
Willie, incidendo per la mitica etichetta
Capricorn Records di Macon, Georgia
del manager di Otis Redding Phil
Walden. Ha collaborato con gli Allman
Brothers, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Jeff Beck,
con il quale ha appena finito il tour
sudamericano. Il suo ultimo progetto
è stato il tributo a Eddie Hinton “Build
Your Own Fire” accompagnato dai
leggendari musicisti di Muscle Shoals.

Figlia di Rufus, sorella di Carla e
Marvell Thomas, Vaneese è alla sua
terza volta a Porretta.
Stretta collaboratrice di Phil Ramone,
con il quale ha diretto i cori in diversi
Pavarotti & Friends, duettando con
Luciano Pavarotti, Sting, Stevie
Wonder, Michael Jackson, Celine Dion,
Eric Clapton è ormai da tempo nella
squadra di Aretha Franklin.
Sembra che Aretha non salga sul
palco senza di lei. A Porretta è in
compagnia della inseparabile Berneta
Miles, altra grande vocalist.

Sin dalla sua apparizione al
Porretta Soul 2007 Toni è diventata
la beniamina del Rufus Thomas
Park. Nata a Memphis, scoperta dal
trombettista e arrangiatore Bowlegs
Miller, ha lavorato con Isaac Hayes,
Luther Ingram, Millie Jackson,
the Barkays, The Doobies, Dennis
Edwards e tanti altri. Nonostante
abbia lavorato con il meglio dei
produttori di Memphis, da Willie
Mitchell (Al Green, Ann Peebles,
Otis Clay) a Quinton Claunch
(James Carr, etc.) ha preferito
limitare le sue presenze nel circuito
black. Uno dei suoi grandi hit
“Southern Soul Music,” è stato per
mesi nella hit parade. Da ricordare
il suo duetto con Floyd Taylor (figlio
di Johnnie) “ Want It”. Floyd è
scomparso lo scorso febbraio due
giorni dopo aver data per certa la
sua presenza a Porretta.

Nata a Memphis, cresciuta con il gospel,
cantante del gruppo Clockwise, Melvia
“Chick” Rodgers-Williams, trasferita a
Chicago nel 1989, pupilla della grande
Koko TaylorI è una delle grandi voce che
il Porretta Soul Festival ha presentato
in 27 anni di vita. Le sua versioni di
“Dr. Feelgood” o di “ Ain’t No Way”
probabilmente hanno fatto imprecare
Aretha Franklin.

Giovane promessa, esuberante
personaggio delle notti di Chicago
e finalmente lontano dal “rap”
e pieno di “respect” per i “soul
masters” come Sam Cooke, Johnny
Taylor, Otis Redding e per il suo
“all time favorite” Tyrone Davis, ha
appena inciso il suo primo CD “Now
Is The Time” ed è un componente
del Black Ensemble Theatre di
Chicago. Se lo vedete a Porretta
vuol dire che ha ricevuto il suo
passaporto in tempo!
Chilly Bill Rankin
Frequentatore delle notti di Memphis,
cantante e songwriter, attualmente
componente dello storico gruppo
vocale della Stax Mad Lads di John
Gary Williams. E’ facile incrociarlo al
“Memphis Sounds” locale del “chitlin’
circuit” ma andateci accompagnati
almeno da Toni Green.
Jerry Jones
Nato a Memphis, inizia a cantare nel
coro gospel di sua madre. Nel 1969
fa parte dei “Brothers Unlimited”
una band di rhythm & blues che
incide “Who’s For The Young” tra
Memphis e Muscle Shoals, registrato
da Mickey Buckins ai Fame Studios
(rivedrà dopo tanti anni Mickey a
Porretta!). Sciolta la band forma gli
“Home Ground Funk” che include
anche il batterista Steve Potts.
La band incide l’album “The Edge”
con Ike Turner, cambia poi nome in
“Home Grown Syndrome”.
Alla fine degli anni ’80 collabora
con Ronald Bell (Kool & The Gang)
e realizza “Mysterious & Sexy” per
la Mercury Records. Prosegue la
carriera come solista dividendo il
palco con gli artisti più importanti
degli anni’90. Resta una delle voci
più interessanti e potenti della sua
generazione.

Frank Bey è nato in Georgia, settimo
figlio (di 12) della cantante gospel Maggie
Jordan. A 4 anni canta in chiesa, a
14 canta con Robert Sharpe and the
Untouchables, una band locale di R&B.
A 17 anni va a Philadelphia come autista
di Gene Lawson, pubblicitario di Otis
Redding che gli fa aprire un paio di
concerti. Negli anni ’70 è il cantante
dei Moorish Vanguard ma interrompe
l’attività quando James Brown intenta
una causa alla band per crediti non
riconosciuti. Ritorna a Philadlphia apre
un ristorante di pesce, esibendosi di
tanto in tanto. Registra il suo primo
CD “Steppin’Out” per la sua etichetta
Magg Records ma quattro anni di dialisi
lo costringono ad un tarpianto ma non
smette di esibirsi e incide il suo secondo
CD “Blues In The Pocket” per la Jeffhouse
Records, poi il conduttore radiofonico
Noel Hayes gli fa incontrare Anthony
Paule e forma la sua nuova band.

Jimmy Johnson Guitar
Was the rhythm guitar player of FAME recording studio in Muscle Shoals and later a
founding member of the Muscle Shoals Rhythm Section which started the Muscle Shoals
Sound recording studio. He is also a studio owner, record producer and engineer.
He has performed with Wilson Pickett, Aretha Franklin, Bob Seger, Levon Helm and many,
many more and engineered the songs The Rolling Stones recorded in Muscle Shoals for
the “Sticky Fingers” album.
Will McFarlane Guitar
Got his start as Bonnie Raitt’s guitar player in the 1970s. Collaborations with The Pointer
Sisters and Jackson Browne followed before he became the lead guitar player for the
Muscle Shoals Rhythm Section. He then appeared on recordings by many artists including
Joss Stone, Candi Staton, Little Milton, Bobby “Blue” Bland and Etta James.
Will is also a recording artist in his own right, releasing a handful of soulful Christian albums.
David Hood Bass
Wwas the bass player of FAME recording studio in Muscle Shoals and later a founding
member of the Muscle Shoals Rhythm Section which started the Muscle Shoals Sound
recording studio. He has performed with Wilson Pickett, Aretha Franklin, Bob Seger,
Traffic, Levon Helm and many, many more. He’s also a member of The Decoys and often
performs with his son, the Drive-By Truckers’ Patterson Hood.
NC Thurman Keyboards
Is a keyboard player, singer and songwriter from Muscle Shoals AL, a member of the Decoys
and half of a duo with Scott Boyer. He sometimes performs with The Fiddleworms, Gary
Nichols and more. He has recorded or performed with many artists including Bettye Swann,
The Forrester Sisters, Percy Sledge, Donnie Fritts, Billy Swan, Christine Ohlman and Tony
Joe White. NC has written songs recorded by Gregg Allman, Jimmy Hall, Johnny Jenkins,
Neal McCoy, Chuck Leavell and others, often in collaboration with Scott Boyer. Most
recently, NC’s keyboard playing can be heard on Tony Joe White‘s 2013 album “Hoodoo”.
Kevin McKendree Keyboards
Recommended by The Rolling Stones’ keyboardist, Chuck Leavell, he backed Arista
recording artist Lee Roy Parnell. Still in his twenties, Kevin co-wrote and co- produced the
Grammy nominated piano driven instrumental, “Mama, Screw Your Wig On Tight.”
In 1997, Kevin joined Delbert McClinton as his band leader, playing on the Grammy winning
albums, “Nothing Personal” and “Cost Of Living,” and the Grammy nominated album,
“Room To Breathe.” He played keyboards with Little Richard, Lee Roy Parnell, Seven Mary
Three, Buddy Guy, John Oates, Anson Funderburgh, Vince Gill, Brian Setzer, Wynnona, Kix
Brooks, Tom Dowd, Donald “Duck” Dunn, Earl King, Tinsley Ellis, Bonnie Bramlett, Randy
Houser, Johnny Sandlin, Mike Henderson, Don Was, Kentucky Headhunters, David Hood,
Johnny Adams, Jim James, Pam Tillis, Zigaboo Modeliste, Larry Graham, Hal Ketchum, T.

Lynn Williams Drums
Is a drummer and percussionist. He interprets every song with empathy and incredible
musicianship. His sense of time and rhythm is impeccable and he enhances every song
with his performance. He’s best known for his work with Delbert McClinton, John Hiatt,
Lee Roy Parnell and Marcia Ball but he also shines on recordings that range from jazz
(Dennis Taylor) to experimental rock (Ned Evett) and his recent work filling in for the
great Roger Hawkins, playing with members of the Muscle Shoals Rhythm Section and
Muscle Shoals Horns. He’s also a member of Dick50 and Whitey Johnson’s band.
Lynn plays Paiste cymbals, Remo heads, Vic Firth sticks and Pearl drums.
Mickey Buckins, Percussion
As an artist, Mickey Buckins fronted the New Breed, playing venues throughout the
Southeast during the mid 1960’s. In 1967 he joined FAME studios, where he worked as
an engineer, producer and songwriter. Produced the Porretta’s hero James Govan and
the Memphis band “Brothers Unlimited”. In the early 1970’s, Buckins moved to Atlanta,
Georgia to work with Bill Lowery. Buckins has written 5 BMI award winning songs
including Janie Fricke’s “Tell Me A Lie” which climbed to the top of the charts and earned
a BMI Millionaire award. His “Double Lovin’” was a Top 10 Pop hit for the Osmonds; “The
Feeling is Right” a TOP 10 R&B hit for Clarence Carter. He wrote and produced Josh
Stone’s hit “Victim of a Foolish Heart” for Atlantic Records.
As a percussionist, Buckins has played on nany sessions, including Bob Dylan’s platinum
album “Slow Train Coming”. During the 1990’s Buckins joined Jerry McGee to create
the weekly Songwriter’s Showcase, and has been credited with keeping the local music
industry viable through a slow period.

Kenny Anderson Tenor Sax
Has played all around the world with Tower Of Power, Gloria Estefan, Larry Carlton, Arturo
Sandoval, Tom Jones and the Nashville Jazz Orchestra as well as teaching saxophone at
High School and University levels.
Doug Moffet Baritone Sax
Has enjoyed the experience of recording and playing live with hundreds of artists that
cover a wide variety of musical genres that include Gospel, R&B, Country, Rock, and Jazz
with Sam Moore, Larry Carlton, Tony Bennett, Johnny Lang, Bobby Blue Bland, Little
Milton, Robert Randolph, Michael McDonald and Lynyrd Skynyrd.
Steve Herrman Trumpet
Is an in demand trumpet player. His session credits include Delbert McClinton, Waylon
Jennings, The Mavericks, Buddy Guy. Lyle Lovett and many sessions as a member of the
Muscle Shoals Horns. He also toured with Delbert McClinton, Waylon Jennings, Wynonna
Judd and Kenny Chesney and has written an instrucional book called “Amazing Phrasing
for Trumpet: 50 Ways to Improve Your Improvisational Skills” (Hal Leonard) with Dennis
Taylor.
Billy Huber Trombone
Has recorded with or backed-up a variety of recording artists such as Henry Mancini,
Natalie Cole, James Brown, The Temptations, O’Jays, Four Tops and Lou Rawls.
He is also an instructor of trombone and euphonium at Trevecca Nazarene University in
Nashville, Tennessee.
Carla Russell Bkg Vocals
Is a powerhouse vocalist. Influenced by Aretha Franklin, Mavis Staples and Etta James,
Carla has performed and recorded with Alicia Keys, Gregg Hall, Jimmy Hall, Gregg Allman
and many others. She’s the singer of Kozmic Mama and a featured performer with the
Muscle Shoals All Star Band.
Marie Lewey Bkg Vocals
Sang on many of the great recordings out of Muscle Shoals as well as live performances
with Amy Grant, Ronnie Milsap, Kenny Rogers, Reba McEntire, Vince Gill and many others.
Jonathan Ellison Guitar (Musical Director on Denise LaSalle set)
Born in the humble town of Brownsville, Tennessee, Jonathan grew up around music. His
parents formed, the gospel group The Ellison Family two years before he was born.
The Ellison Family would go on to record 8 gospel albums. Guitarist/Band Leader for BB
King’s Blues Club house band “The BB King All-stars” and also band leader for the Queen
of the Blues & Southern Soul, Ms. Denise LaSalle. This experience has been rewarding.

a livello nazionale, ma la band è stata
nominata la miglior blues/soulrock
band degli Stati Uniti dal Downbeat
Magazine, la “bibbia” del soul e jazz, nel
2006, 2009, 2010, 2012, e di nuovo nel
