
Rock music arrived in Italy in the early 1960s
from the United States with the earliest
versions of rock and roll. In that period there
were cover versions or interpretative covers of
already existing songs.
1960s & 1970
 The United States and United Kingdom during the
1960s were in the period of the psychedelic rock boom,
which inspired Italian psychedelic bands such as Mario
Schifano and Le Orme. During the 1968 student
uprisings, many young and educated Italians began to
identify with the counterculture in France, Mexico, USA
and across the world. Young Italians still had a well
educated familiarity with classical music composers.
The result was the birth of classically-influenced rock
bands which fit right into the international trend to
progressive rock.

 Premiata Forneria Marconi,
 Banco del Mutuo Soccorso,
 New Trolls.

Banco del Mutuo Soccorso
The most important features of their sound were the complex
texture provided by piano, Hammond organ and synthesizers, and
by the original vocals delivered by Francesco Di Giacomo. A
careful balance of electronic and acoustic instruments, and the use
of reeds, made the sound of Banco increasingly original and
innovative, with a blend of rock, jazz and classical music which did
not forsake the Italian melodic tradition.
Vasco Rossi
Vasco Rossi, also known with the nickname “Il Blasco”, is one of
the more successful Italian singer-songwriters, both in Italy and
abroad. During his career, he has published 26 albums and has
written over 250 songs, as well as lyrics for other artists. He calls
himself a "provoca(u)tore", as throughout his career he has been
regularly criticized for his choices of lifestyle and the lyrics in his
songs.


Luciano Ligabue
Ligabue is not only a singer-songwriter, but also a film
director and a writer.
His rock is rather commercial, but he shows originality
by a strong influence of the social and political trends
of his country, that he is able to represent with
liveliness and sincerity.

