Winter Spettacolo
Winter Spettacolo “Ali Baba and the Bongo Bandits” taking place this Friday, December 4th @ 19:00 at the
Polisportiva Formiginese in Formigine.
Winter Spettacolo “Young Edition” - Kindergarten, Transition & Grade 1 will take place on Wednesday,
December 16th @ 12:30 in the Gym;
Winter Show - Grades 2C/N & Grade 3 will also take place on Wednesday, December 16th @ 13:45 in the
Gym.
This week : dr.ssa Fungi’s workshop today “New place, new school, new phase, new me? A reflection around
change and transitions for parents and students” and Early Years Essential Agreements Philosophy workshop
tomorrow at 13:30.
School Calendar 2016/2017
This is our final week of consultation on the 2016-17 school calendar. Please let us have your comments on
the proposed dates by sending them in writing to the School Manager,
[email protected] before December, 4th . We expect to announce the definitive school
calendar for next year by mid-December.
EAL (English Additional Language)
Those parents whose children have EAL support should have received, by email, a new document that we
have produced about Additional Language Acquisition. This is a useful booklet which helps parents to
understand the series of processes that their child is going through when acquiring another language. We
have now added this to the school website for all parents to read.
Leavers & extended absences
Please make sure you have informed the school office with enough notice if your family is relocating in order
for the school to produce the transfer certificates and/or any documentation required.
Those families who will be missing 1 or more school days due to extended family holidays need to inform the
school with at least one week notice
Last but not least, we’re heading into the coldest months of the winter season often characterized by local
snowfalls. We would like to remind you of the emergency contact procedure in place at IS Modena:
1.
Always check our school website first, in case we need to close the school the homepage will host the
information; our Facebook page will also host the same information however the website will be the first
to be updated;
2.
Should the snowfall occur during the night, all our parents will receive an emergency communication via
text/SMS on their mobile devices (cell phones). Please make sure the office has your updated Italian
contact number.

Questa settimana: oggi la dr.ssa Fungi terrà un workshop “Nuovo posto, nuova scuola, nuova fase, nuovo me?
Una riflessione sul cambiamento e le transizioni per genitori e studenti”, mentre domani alle 13.30 si avrà il
workshop per i genitori di Kindergarten, Transition e Grade 1 sulla filosofia didattica di Early Years.
Calendario scolastico 2016/2017: Questa è l’ultima settimana di consultazione sul calendario scolastico 2016-17.
Vi preghiamo di farci avere i vostri commenti sulle date proposte inviando entro il 4 dicembre una mail alla School
Manager, [email protected]. Prevediamo di annunciare il calendario definitivo entro metà
dicembre.
Inglese come seconda lingua (EAL): Quei genitori i cui figli hanno supporto con la lingua inglese dovrebbero avere
ricevuto, per email, un nuovo documento che abbiamo creato in merito all'apprendimento della seconda lingua.
Questo è un opuscolo molto utile per capire le diverse dinamiche che vostro/a figlio/a attraversa mentre apprende
un'altra lingua. Abbiamo anche incluso questo documento sul sito della scuola così tutti i genitori interessati
possono leggerlo.
Assenze prolungate o partenze: Vi preghiamo di informare la segreteria con sufficiente anticipo nel caso la vostra
famiglia si trasferisca, così che la scuola possa emettere i certificati di trasferimento e/o qualsiasi altro tipo di
documentazione richiesta. Le famiglie che si assenteranno per uno o più giorni per vacanza devono informare la
scuola almento una settimana prima.
Infine, ci avvicianimo ai mesi più freddi dell’anno, spesso caratterizzati da locali nevicate . Vorremmo ricordarvi la
procedura d’emergenza in vigore alla ISModena:
1.
Per prima cosa, controllate sempre il nostro sito internet, dove indicheremo se ci sarà la necessità di chiudere
la scuola; anche la nostra pagina Facebook riporterà le stesse informazioni, tuttavia sarà il nostro sito il primo
ad essere aggiornato;
2.
Se dovesse nevicare durante la notte, i nostri genitori riceveranno una comunicazione d’emergenza via SMS sui
loro cellulari. Vi invitiamo dunque ad accertarvi che la segreteria abbia i vostri dati aggiornati.
Vi ringraziamo per il tempo che dedicate alla lettura della newsletter, crediamo fermamente che la
comunicazione con la nostra comunità sia un aspetto fondamentale della IS Modena e i vostri commenti

Polisportiva in Formigine on Friday 4th December 2015.
Your child will be taking part in the song, ‘Bongo
Bandits!’ For their role they will need to wear black
trousers and a colourful top. The students will need to
come to the theatre already dressed in costume on
Friday 4th December at 18:20 for a short dress
rehearsal before the performance which will start at
19:00. If your child is unable to take part in the
production on Friday 4th December could you please
inform the office so we have an accurate record of the
numbers involved.

Quest’anno il nostro Winter Spettacolo è Ali Baba and the Bongo Bandits! Si svolgerà presso la
Polisportiva a Formigine venerdì 4 Dicembre 2015. Vostro figlio farà parte del gruppo che canta la
canzone ‘Bongo Bandits!’ Per questo ruolo avrà bisogno di indossare pantaloni neri e una
maglietta colorata. Gli studenti dovranno arrivare al teatro indossando gli abiti di scena Venerdì 4
Dicembre alle ore 18:20 per una breve prova costumi prima dello spettacolo che inizierà alle ore

“What is the educational program of the International Baccalaureate for ages 14-18”
An overview of the upper years of the MYP (Middle Years Programme) and DP (Diploma Programme) of the IB International Baccalaureate, adopted by IS Modena for its students
The workshop organized by the International School of Modena will take place on December 10th 2015 from 1.30 to
2.45 pm to explain the features of the programmes offered to the students between the ages of 14 and 18. The
workshop will be dual language, English and Italian.
IS Modena has adopted the educational programs of the International Baccalaureate (IB), the international nonprofit educational foundation offering its learning programs to over 4,000 schools and over 1.000,000 students
worldwide. An IB education develops inquiring, knowledgeable and caring young people who are motivated to
succeed. The IB offers an innovative education providing the students with autonomy, knowledge and the skills
needed to cope with modern-world challenges.
Students at IS Modena follow the IB MYP for five years, from ages 11-16, followed by the IB Diploma Programme
from ages 16-18. The MYP is a challenging framework that encourages students to make practical connections
between their studies and the real world. The IB Diploma programme aims to develop students who have excellent
breadth and depth of knowledge – students who flourish physically, intellectually, emotionally and ethically. The

WINTER FAIR 2015
Dear Parents,
ISM PTA 2015 WINTER FAIR
The PTA would like to cordially invite you to both attend and take part in supporting the ISM PTA Winter Fair
which is to take place on Saturday 12 December 2015 from 12.00noon to 3.00pm at ISM.
At the Fair, we will have lots of fun stalls and activities available to keep children and parents happy, including
the ever-popular International Buffet, an Usborne Books for Children book shop, charity gift stalls (where
you can purchase little items to contribute to the charity) and a variety of children’s activities. We will also be
holding a short festive song “concert,” featuring both children and parents (and hopefully a few of our teaching
staff!).
If you have not already done so, make sure you mark the date in your diary so as not to miss out on the fun!
The Winter Fair has always proved to be a very successful, popular and important event in the ISM calendar
because of the sense of community that is created by it. Indeed, it is this sense of community that makes the
day so enjoyable and successful. To enable this, we ask that every family who comes along actively participates
by bringing a dish of their national cuisine to share with other families and by donating a few small
items and some of their time. Read on for further details!
Although we already have lots of people who have kindly offered their help with the Fair, we can always use
some extra pairs of hands! We will be continuing our planning and organizing for the Winter Fair on Friday,
20 November 2015 at 1.30pm at the Roller Bar (situated behind the library building next to ISM), so please
come along if you would like to find out more and help out. If you cannot attend the meeting but would like to
help out, please contact either Claudia Schmitz, PTA Chairperson (342 087 0050 or [email protected]), or your Class Representative to discuss further. Alternatively, there will be a “sign-up” sheet in
the school reception area from Monday 23 November, so please add your name against any activity that you are
interested in helping out with.
If you would like to come to the Fair, we will be selling Winter Fair admission tickets together with coupons for
the other activities at our “PTA Winter Fair Ticket Office,” which will be open in the school reception
area during every morning and afternoon at drop off and pickup time from Wednesday 2 December until Friday
11 December. The admission price is 10 Euros per adult with no charge for children.
The admission price is inclusive of all food, drinks and children’s craft activities. (The PTA uses the ticket monies
to cover all of the costs incurred in arranging the Fair, with any funds left over being used to fund extra
educational resources for the children at school). If you are not able to come into school to purchase your
tickets, please contact your Class Representative who will assist you as appropriate.
We hope to see as many of you on the day as possible! If you have any questions or queries, please

Description of activities proposed for ISM Winter Fair- 2015
The Winter Fair is a celebration of our unique international community at ISM and its success relies upon everyone in our special
community joining together to help make the day special! Therefore, if you are planning to come along to the Fair we ask that each
family makes a small contribution of some food, a jam jar or two and a little time spent to help out as detailed below:
International Buffet
Many of you have been to, and indeed involved in a previous Winter Fair and know all about the International Buffet! However, for
those of you who are new to ISM and the Winter Fair, the International Buffet is probably the biggest and certainly most delicious
part!
Every year we look to our families to provide a donation of either homemade or shop-bought food which is brought in on the day of
the Fair and set up in a buffet for everyone to taste! As we have so many different nationalities at ISM, it is a great opportunity to
cook, share and taste many different types of food from all around the world.
We split the Buffet into different categories to take account of everyone’s culinary abilities and tastes as well as to ensure that we
have plenty of food to go round, as virtually all of our ISM families attend!
Therefore, this year, we need every family who is planning to attend the Fair to provide some of their national food on the day in the
following categories:
Finger foods – examples include mini pizzas, small breads, sausage rolls etc
Main dishes – examples include chilli, curries, Lasagne, pies, cooked meats, etc
Side dishes – examples include salads, rice, couscous, potatoes, etc.
Desserts – examples include large cakes, cupcakes, muffins, fruit salads, etc
Please therefore contact our buffet committee representatives comprising of:

at your earliest opportunity to discuss your preferred contribution. Please aim to provide enough of any dish(es) for 8-10 portions,
remembering that there should be NO NUTS OR NUT PRODUCTS used. Also, you should provide a list of ingredients to be displayed
with the food (as we have people within the ISM community with food allergies), and ideally, bring your dish in a disposable
container.
Jam Jar Hoopla
One of the most popular children’s activities on the day is our “Jam Jar Hoopla,” where we try to ensure that every child wins a jar (or
2) filled with something special inside! To this end, if you have any empty glass jars at home, please keep them, wash them and fill
them with something suitable for a child (e.g. lego, hairbands, chocolates, sweets, marbles, etc). If you have time, also decorate
them to make them attractive for the children to win! As we have some more than 200 children at ISM, the more jars we have on
the day, the better!
You can start leaving them in a box at the school entrance starting 1 December 2015. For queries please contact our Jam Jar Hoopla

Festive Song Concert
We are also planning to have a short medley of traditional festive songs to be performed by the students in their mother tongue
language on the day, and also one by the parents. The singing groups so far are
Italian: Bertarelli Ombretta
German: Claudia Schmitz - English: Fittore Pang-Kessler, Carmel Clear, Claudia Granger - Portugese: Valeria B Zorzan - Spanish:
Paola Calero. If you would like your child to be in the mother tongue singing groups, please contact Claudia Schmitz (342 087 0050
or [email protected]). Please note that the children’s participation is purely voluntary. You may also sign up for the adult
singing group if you like.
Rehearsals will be organized during the school day by the relevant parent co-ordinators and a schedule will be displayed on the
school notice board in due course.
Setting up/helping on the day/clearing up
It would also be great if you could spare a little time (30 minutes or so) to help out setting up beforehand, helping out with an activity
on the day or helping out with clearing up after the Fair, as “many hands make light work!” Add your name to the “sign-up” sheets
that will be on the notice board in the school reception area from Monday, 23 November 2015.

FESTA D’INVERNO 2015
Cari Genitori,
FESTA D’INVERNO 2015 ORGANIZZATA DAL PTA
Il PTA vi invita cordialmente a partecipare e ad essere attivamente coinvolti nell’organizzazione della Festa
d’Inverno che si terra’ Sabato 12 Dicembre 2015 dalle 12.00 alle 15.00 presso la scuola.
Alla festa saranno organizzate molte attivita’ divertenti, bancarelle dei libri Usborne, altre di beneficienza,
il Buffet Internazionale e anche una serie di attivita’ per i ragazzi. Verra’ tenuto inoltre un piccolo concerto
di canti natalizi, a cui potranno partecipare i ragazzi, i genitori e gli insegnanti. Per cui, se non lo avete
ancora fatto, fatevi un appunto di questa data sull’agenda.
La Festa ha sempre un grande successo anno dopo anno, ed e’ un evento importante nel calendario dell’
ISM perche’ aiuta a creare un vero e proprio senso di appartenenza alla comunita’ della scuola. Ed e’
proprio questo che rende questa giornata cosi’ piacevole e divertente per tutti. Per questo motivo,
affinche’ questo sia un evento di successo, chiediamo a tutti coloro che verranno alla fiera di portare un
piatto della propria tradizione e anche, se possibile, di aiutare il PTA nella preparazione della festa e
durante la giornata stessa.
Nonostante molti di voi si sono gia’ offerti di aiutare nell’organizzazione, abbiamo sempre bisogno di una
mano in piu!
Ci sara’ un incontro per chi vuole aiutare nell’organizzazione, Venerdì 20 Novembre 2015 alle ore 13.30 al
Roller bar a Montale (il bar si trova vicino alla scuola, dietro la biblioteca di Montale). Se non riuscite a
venire all’incontro ma vorreste in ogni caso aiutare, potete contattare Claudia Schmitz ,
PTA Chairperson (342 087 0050 [email protected] ) oppure la vostra Rappresentante di Classe.
In alternativa, ci sara’ anche un foglio a scuola, a partire da lunedi 23 novembre, dove potrete inserire il
vostro nome per aiutare alla fiera, e vedere la lista delle varie attivita’.
I biglietti per la Fiera saranno in vendita, insieme ai biglietti delle altre attivita’, presso “l’ufficio biglietteria
Fiera d’Inverno”, che aprira’ nell’entrata della scuola ogni mattina e pomeriggio al momento in cui
lasciamo e prendiamo i nostri figli. I biglietti saranno in vendita dal 2 al 11 dicembre.
Il prezzo dei biglietti e’ di 10 Euro per gli adulti, i bimbi entrano gratis. Il biglietto di ammissione include il
pranzo all’International buffet, il bere e le attivita’ per i bambini. Potete anche invitare persone al di fuori
della scuola. Se non riuscite a venire a scuola per acquistare i biglietti, potete contattare la votra
Rappresentante di Classe.
Il Pta usa il ricavato dalla vendita dei biglietti per coprire i costi della fiera e gli eventuali fondi rimanenti
verranno utilizzati per delle attivita’ didattiche per i nostri figli.
Speriamo di vedere un numero piu’ alto possibile di partecipanti alla festa! Se avete domande, potete

Festa d’Inverno 2015 – ecco come potete aiutarci!
Qui sotto trovate in dettaglio le attivita’ in cui potrete aiutare. Per favore leggete con attenzione. La buona riuscita di questa festa
dipende da ognuno di noi, per cui se venite alla festa vi chiediamo di partecipare attivamente portando un piatto per il buffet e dei
barattoli per il gioco del “jam-jars” .
Buffet Internazionale
Molti di voi hanno gia’ partecipato e sono stati coinvolti nell’organizzazione di una Festa d’Inverno negli anni precedenti, ma per
chi e’ nuovo all’ISM ed e’ il primo anno che partecipera’ alla Festa, dovete sapere che il Buffet Internazionale e’ quasi sicuramente
la parte piu’ importante e piu’ invitante della Festa!
Ogni anno invitiamo le famiglie a portare piatti fatti in casa, oppure acquistati, di cose salate, dolci, vegetariane e non, per il
buffet, cosicche’ tutti possano assaporare delizie provenienti da altri paesi.
Siccome abbiamo cosi’ tante nazionalita’ all’ISM, questa e’ un’opportunita’ per preparare, condividere e assaggiare cucine diverse.
Ogni anno il buffet viene diviso in categorie diverse, per far si che tutti possano portare qualcosa da condividere e possano
assaggiare un po’ di tutto.
Quest’ anno abbiamo diviso i piatti in:
Finger food: come mini pizzette, pane, salatini, ecc...
Piatti principlali: includendo lasagne, torte salate, curry, piatti vegetariani, etc..
Contorni: insalate, riso, cous-cous, patate...
Dolci: macedonie di frutta, torte, tirami-su, crostate etc...

Per favore portare un piatto da servire circa 8-10 porzioni, ricordandovi che tutti i piatti devono essere privi di prodotti a base
frutta in guscio. Intoltre dovrete portare la lista degli ingredienti, onde evitare problemi di allergie, e utilizzare un recipiente usa e
getta.
Gioco dei barattoli di marmellata – Jam jars hoopla
Una delle attivita’ favorite dai bambini e’ il gioco dei barattoli di marmellata (jam-jars), in cui ogni bimbo vince uno o due barattoli
pieni di qualcosa di speciale. Per cui, se a casa avete dei barattoli vuoti di marmellata, per cortesia teneteli, lavateli e riempiteli di
oggetti adatti ai bimbi, come lego, elastici per capelli, dolcetti, cioccolato, caramelle.
Se avete tempo, decorateli per renderli piu’ attraenti per i bimbi da vincere. Siccome abbiamo circa 200 studenti all’ISM,
dobbiamo cercare di raccogliere un numero piu’ alto possibile di barattoli.
Potete iniziare a portare i barattoli a partire dal 1 dicembre e lasciarli all’entrata della scuola dove ci sara’ un contenitore apposito.

Concerto di Canti festivi
Vorremmo inoltre mettere insieme un piccolo concerto di canti tipici delle feste cantati dagli studenti nella loro lingua madre,
anche i genitori sono invitati a partecipare.

[email protected]) con il nome e la classe dei vostri figli.Contattate sempre Claudia per partecipare al coro dei genitori.
Prove verranno organizzate durante le ore di scuola dai genitori che decideranno di essere coinvolti in questa attivita’ e una lista
con i partecipanti verra’ esposta a scuola.
Aiuto il giorno stesso: prima/durante/dopo la festa
Saremmo felici se vorreste dedicare il vostro tempo (30-40 minuti) ad aiutare prima della festa, durante le attivita’ e anche dopo,
perche’ in piu’ siamo meglio e’. Se volete rendervi disponibili per questo, potete segnare il vostro nome sulla lista che verra’
esposta la prossima settimana all’ingresso della scuola.

Except for the very young children, we expect the students to keep track of their own
belongings. Please discuss this with them. If your child arrives home with clothing or
something else that belongs to another student, please return it to school the next day.
A lost property (Lost & Found Box) is located temporarily in the Medical Room, feel free to
check it for missing items and please keep it tidy.

Ad eccezione dei bambini molto piccoli, ci aspettiamo che gli studenti tengano controllati i loro
effetti personali. Discutetene con Vostro figlio. Se Vostro figlio arriva a casa con abbigliamento
o altri oggetti che appartengono ad altri studenti, siete pregati di restituirli a scuola il giorno
seguente.
Gli oggetti smarriti (Scatola degli Oggetti Smarriti) si trova temporaneamente nel locale
infermeria, controllate liberamente e mantenetelo in ordine.
PARKING AREA
All parents must use the public parking area outside the school gate at all times.
Please remember to lock your cars and please make sure you don’t leave any personal
belongings in the car.
Internal parking area is reserved for staff only and the bus service.
PARCHEGGIO ESTERNO
Tutti i genitori devono utilizzare sempre il parcheggio all’esterno del cancello. Ricordatevi di
chiudere le portiere dell’auto e non lasciate borse e borsette in macchina.
