A CULTURE OF EDUCATIONAL SERVICES INVOLVING
THE PUBLIC AND PRIVATE SPHERES
Il Comune di Reggio Emilia, in collaborazione con
Reggio Children, ha dato avvio al “Progetto scambi”
promosso dalla Regione Emilia Romagna.
Il progetto si propone, attraverso il coinvolgimento più
ampio dei Comuni della Regione, di sostenere e favorire
i protagonismi attivi dei diversi soggetti gestori
del sistema integrato delle varie città.
Il Comune di Reggio Emilia, in collaborazione con Reggio
Children, ha inoltre dato avvio alla realizzazione del “Progetto
scambi” in ambito provinciale, coinvolgendo la FISM e diversi
Comuni della provincia.
Il progetto si articola in numerosi incontri, scambi pedagogici e
momenti di approfondimento rivolti a insegnanti e pedagogisti
di strutture educative comunali, cooperative e private.

The Municipality of Reggio Emilia, in collaboration
with Reggio Children, has initiated “Project Exchange,”
promoted by the Emilia-Romagna Region.
By promoting wider involvement of the municipalities
in the region, the project aims to support and foster
the active protagonism of the various management
organizations within the integrated early education systems
of the various cities.
In addition, the Municipality of Reggio Emilia, in
collaboration with Reggio Children, has also launched
a Project Exchange initiative at the provincial level,
involving the FISM (Italian Federation of Private
Preschools) and various municipalities within the
province.
The project involves numerous meetings, pedagogical
exchange, and professional development initiatives for
teachers and pedagogistas in municipal, cooperative,
and private educational services.

The artistic language of Alberto Burri
Dal 18 novembre 2001 al 7 gennaio 2002 si è tenuta a
Reggio Emilia una mostra antologica di Alberto Burri, tra i
protagonisti dell’arte internazionale della seconda metà del ‘900.
In quest’occasione il Comune di Reggio Emilia, tramite i Musei
Civici, in collaborazione con Reggio Children, Centro
Documentazione e Ricerca Educativa Nidi e Scuole
dell’Infanzia e Remida, ha proposto un percorso educativo
rivolto agli insegnanti, bambini, ragazzi dei Nidi, scuole
Materne, dell’Infanzia, Elementari, Medie.
Il progetto è stato elaborato e curato da consulenti di Reggio
Children.
L’intento è stato quello di offrire ai bambini, ai ragazzi e agli
insegnanti delle occasioni di esplorazione e possibilità di
approccio espressivo a molti diversi materiali, occasioni
suggerite da alcuni aspetti delle opere di Burri. Con la
consapevolezza e l’attenzione che anche nell’incontro con le
opere di grandi artisti, il soggetto principale è, e deve
rimanere il bambino (il ragazzo), con il suo immaginario, i suoi
processi di conoscenza e le sue strategie relazionali.
From November 18, 2001 to January 7, 2002, a
retrospective exhibit of the works of Italian artist Alberto
Burri, one of the protagonists of international art in the
second half of the 20th century, was held in Reggio Emilia.
For this occasion the Municipality of Reggio Emilia, through the
Civic Museums and in collaboration with Reggio Children, the
Documentation and Educational Research Center of the Municipal
Infant-toddler Centers and Preschools and Remida, organized an
educational initiative for teachers and children from infant-toddler
centers, preschools, elementary and middle schools.
The project was designed and coordinated by Reggio
Children consultants.
The aim was to offer children and teachers opportunities to
approach and explore many different materials, as suggested
by certain aspects of Burri’s work. This was done in the
awareness and attention to the fact that even in the encounter
with the work of great artists, the principal subject is and must
always be the child, with his or her own imagination,
knowledge-building processes, and relational strategies.

L’Assessorato Cultura e Sapere del Comune di Reggio Emilia,
il Centro di Documentazione e Ricerca Educativa Nidi e
Scuole dell’Infanzia e Reggio Children hanno promosso, in
relazione alla mostra “Alfabeto in sogno”, che si è tenuta a
Reggio Emilia dal 19 gennaio al 3 marzo 2002, un progetto
didattico che ha coinvolto bambini dai 4 ai 10 anni ed
insegnanti di numerose scuole dell’infanzia ed elementari
della città.
Il progetto ha avuto come filo conduttore la convinzione che
una relazione più consapevole fra il testo e la sua forma,
dove il contenuto scaturisca da questo specifico rapporto,
porterebbe i bambini a divertirsi a manipolare la scrittura,
trovando una sintesi stimolante tra espressione figurativa e
contenuto, mantenendo vivo il magico della scrittura.
In relation to the exhibit “Alfabeto in sogno” (Alphabet in Dream)
held in Reggio Emilia from January 19 to March 3, 2002, the
Department of Culture and Education of the Municipality of
Reggio Emilia, the Documentation and Educational Research
Center of the Municipal Infant-toddler Centers and Preschools,
and Reggio Children promoted a didactic project involving
children ages four to ten and teachers from numerous local
preschools and elementary schools.
The project was based on the conviction that a more
conscious relationship between a text and its form, where the
content arises from this specific relationship, can offer
children a fun and engaging way to manipulate writing, finding
a stimulating synthesis between figurative expression and
content, and keeping alive the magic of writing.

Il 26 gennaio 2002 una giuria di assoluto rilievo nel campo
della letteratura, del cinema e della cultura internazionale,
presieduta da Claudio Magris e composta da Adonis, Ulderico
Bernardi, Peter Brook, Luca Cendali, Raymond Klibansky,
Emmanuel Le Roy Ladurie, Morando Morandini, V.S. Naipaul,
Giulio Nascimbeni ed Ermanno Olmi ha assegnato il Premio
Nonino XXVII anno “A un Maestro italiano del nostro tempo” al
Progetto educativo per l’infanzia del Comune di Reggio
Emilia.
On January 26, 2002, a panel of important judges from the
fields of literature, cinema, and international culture, presided
over by Claudio Magris and composed of Adonis, Ulderico

Le motivazioni del riconoscimento sono state così esposte:
In un mondo attraversato da tentazioni di disumanità diventa
indispensabile manifestare un forte impegno civile per la
formazione delle nuove generazioni.
Nato da un atto d’amore di molte madri che nell’immediato
dopoguerra raccolsero i residuati bellici per finanziare una
magnifica impresa di pace, il Progetto per l’infanzia di Reggio
Emilia oggi è costituito da tredici Nidi e ventuno Scuole per
l’infanzia.
Questo progetto “che accredita ai bambini potenzialità e
creatività, riconoscendoli soggetti di diritti e portatori di proprie
culture e autonomie, crea premesse fondamentali per una più
alta condivisione di cittadinanza degli individui” come sintetizza
magistralmente Loris Malaguzzi, fondatore di questo sogno.
Gli altri due Premi Nonino 2002 sono stati attribuiti
a Norman Manea (Premio Internazionale Nonino 2002)
e a Tzvetan Todorov (Premio Nonino 2002 a un Maestro del
nostro tempo).
The reasons given for this recognition were as follows:
In a world full of temptations of inhumanity, it becomes
indispensable to demonstrate a strong civil commitment for
the education of the new generations.
Born of an act of love on the part of many mothers who,
in the period following the Second World War, gathered the
residues of war to finance a magnificent enterprise of peace,
the early childhood project of Reggio Emilia now comprises
thirteen infant-toddler centers and twenty-one preschools.
This project, “which credits children with potentials and
creativity, recognizing them as subjects of rights and
possessors of their own cultures and autonomy, creates
the fundamental premises for a higher condition of citizenship
for human individuals,” as masterfully summarized by Loris
Malaguzzi, the founder of this dream.

The process of reform in Italian schools
Remida is the creative recycling center set
up in 1996 based on an idea proposed by
AGAC (the gas and water company) and the
Municipality of Reggio Emilia, with the
collaboration of over 150 companies in the
province of Reggio Emilia who supply
discard materials which are then made
available to teachers, schools, recreation
centers, associations, and so on.
Remida is managed by the Friends of Reggio
Children Association.

Association have promoted the 3rd annual
Remida Day.
With a range of cultural events and exhibits,
Remida Day aims at sensitizing citizens, the
younger generations, the world of school,
and volunteer associations on the issues of
people-environment solidarity, ecological
culture, and the value of reusing discarded
materials.
Numerous initiatives are planned, including a
literary competition for unpublished stories
on the theme of waste materials and
recycling, concerts, installations, exhibits,
conferences, and a flea market for household
goods. Certain moments will be in
conjunction with the concurrent initiative
“Homage to Gianni Rodari.”

COOPERATION and SOLIDARITY
Negli anni Reggio Children, in collaborazione con il
Comune di Reggio Emilia e l’Associazione “Amici di
Reggio Children”, ha attivato iniziative di cooperazione
con istituzioni per l’infanzia in vari paesi, tra cui Bosnia,
Kossovo, Cuba, Senegal.
Negli ultimi tempi, si sta lavorando su un progetto per la
qualificazione di ambienti e la formazione di insegnanti
in Egitto e in Palestina, su richiesta di due diverse ONG.
Inoltre, nell’ambito degli accordi che la Regione Emilia
Romagna e il Comune di Reggio Emilia hanno stretto
con il Saharawi, si sta valutando l’opportunità di
coinvolgere una scuola in un gemellaggio con
analoga realtà di Smara, il campo profughi
ospitato nel deserto algerino.
Over the years, in collaboration with the Municipality
of Reggio Emilia and the Friends of Reggio Children
Association, Reggio Children has carried out
cooperative initiatives with educational institutions
in a number of countries and territories,
including Bosnia, Kosovo, Cuba, and Senegal.
A project is now underway for improving environments
and for teacher professional development in Egypt
and the Palestinian Territories on the request of two
different NGOs.
In addition, within the sphere of agreements that
the Emilia-Romagna Region and the Municipality of
Reggio Emilia have made with the Saharawi, a
project is being examined to create a sister-school
relationship between a school in Reggio Emilia
and one in Smara, a refugee camp in the
Algerian desert.
SOS-DESIGN per EMERGENCY

COOPERAZIONE e SOLIDARIETA’
Reggio Children, offrendo un centinaio di copie della
propria pubblicazione “Fruscii d’ali”, ha aderito
all’iniziativa SOS-DESIGN, un progetto di raccolta
fondi a favore di Emergency, associazione umanitaria
italiana per la cura e la riabilitazione delle vittime
delle guerre e delle mine antiuomo.
Il progetto SOS-DESIGN ha visto l’organizzazione,
durante il Salone del Mobile di Milano 2002, di una
Mostra-Mercato di oggetti di design in vendita a
prezzi solidali, il cui ricavato è stato interamente
devoluto ad Emergency. Sono state coinvolte le
aziende di settore (con donazioni di prodotti),
i designer di chiara fama (con donazioni di propri
prodotti o prototipi o schizzi), le scuole di design
e i giovani progettisti (con un concorso d’idee
sul tema dell’emergenza, ad iscrizione/sottoscrizione
obbligatoria).
SOS-DESIGN for EMERGENCY
Reggio Children donated about a hundred copies of
its publication “A Rustling of Wings” to the SOS-DESIGN
initiative, a fund-raising project in favor of Emergency,
an Italian humanitarian association providing medical
care and rehabilitation for victims of wars and
land mines.
As part of the Furniture Show of Milan 2002, the SOS-DESIGN
exhibit offered objects of design for sale at special prices,
with the proceeds going entirely to Emergency. The initiative
involved manufacturers (who donated products), well-known
designers (who donated their own products and prototypes or
sketches), various design schools and young designers (in a
competition of ideas on the theme of emergency, with
mandatory entry fees donated to Emergency).

Nel trentesimo anniversario degli “Incontri con la Fantastica”
tenuti da Gianni Rodari a Reggio Emilia, incontri da cui prese
forma il progetto che portò lo scrittore a pubblicare il libro
Grammatica della Fantasia, testo di assoluta rilevanza in
ambito educativo per bambini e adulti, il Comune di Reggio
Emilia – Assessorato Cultura e Sapere – Nidi e Scuole
dell’Infanzia e Reggio Children organizzano una serie di

meetings that led Rodari to write his book Grammatica della

Reggio Children - International center for the defence and
promotion of the rights and potential of all children - was
established in 1994 as a public-private company in order
to highlight and develop the thirty-year educational
experience of the municipal infant-toddler centers and
preschools of Reggio Emilia. In this light, Reggio Children
organizes and coordinates a wide-ranging network of
national and international cultural exchange initiatives
geared toward disseminating the Reggio educational
approach by promoting professional development and
research in the field of education in collaboration with
universities, foundations, and government ministries.

The “Friends of Reggio Children” non-profit association,
with more than 900 members in Italy and abroad, is
supported by the volunteer work of its members and
donations from supporters. The association shares with
Reggio Children (in which it holds a 9% share) and with the
Municipality of Reggio Emilia the commitment to promote
the thought and work of Loris Malaguzzi, collaborating in
the planning and organization of numerous professional
development and cultural initiatives. The “Friends of
Reggio Children” association also manages REMIDA, a
recycling center for discarded materials donated by
business and industry which are made available to the
local infant-toddler centers, preschools, elementary
schools, and play centers.
