SALUTO DELLA CITTÁ
Con piacere rivolgo il saluto di benvenuto del Municipio della Città di Lugano
all'evento Blues to Bop che ogni estate
anima le piazze di Lugano con una programmazione musicale eterogenea che
spazia dal Blues al Bop.
Questa manifestazione, giunta con rinnovato successo alla sua XXI edizione,
presenta un cartellone estremamente
ricco che certo esaudirà pienamente le
aspettative dei numerosi appassionati,
perché composto da artisti di grande richiamo che si esibiranno gratuitamente
e che sapranno come ogni anno pervadere le piazze cittadine di un'atmosfera
di vivacità e gioia.
Ciò che positivamente colpisce è l'immutato calore espresso dal pubblico nei
confronti della kermesse musicale e dei
tanti musicisti che si succedono sul palco
e che concorrono a fare di questo Festival uno degli appuntamenti più attesi e
apprezzati della stagione musicale luganese.

LUGANO BLUES TO BOP
Per ventun’anni Lugano Blues to Bop ha
presentato artisti sconosciuti ai mass-media
a un pubblico eterogeneo con un successo
che ha creato un evento unico nel suo genere.
Grazie al costante supporto e alla generosità degli sponsors il Festival riesce ad
evitare quella barriera selettiva che è il biglietto d’entrata.
Tutti i concerti sono infatti offerti gratuitamente a un pubblico che trasforma le piazze centrali della città in una festa in cui per
tre giorni si respira aria di musica in un’atmosfera frizzante.
Il declino nella vendita di CD ha reso bluesmen e altri artisti attivi nell’ambito della
“Roots Music” sempre più invisibili , in
quanto considerati incapaci di generare
guadagni sufficienti per sostenere le costose campagne pubblicitarie delle grosse case discografiche.
Questo viene in parte controbilanciato dallo sviluppo di nuovi mezzi di registrazione
e di diffusione digitale sempre più economici, ma le centinaia di festival estivi assumono oggi un ruolo sempre più cruciale
nella presentazione dal vivo di questi artisti
di talento.
È qui che Blues to Bop si è guadagnato
una nicchia di pieno rispetto, se non di prestigio, amato com'è dai suoi musicisti e dal
suo pubblico che aspettano per mesi con
gioia di incontrarsi a Lugano.

For twenty-one years the Lugano Blues to
Bop Festival has presented artists unknown
outside of the Blues and "Roots Music"
world to a non-specialist audience with
such success that the event has become a
unique occasion.
One essential factor has been the constant
support and generosity of the sponsors,
which allows each and every concert to be
offered free to the public. This ensures that
the audience is in no way “selected” by an
entrance fee, and the result is that the centre of Lugano is transformed into a village
where music is eaten, drunk and breathed
for three days.
The decline in CD sales has made the bluesman and other "Roots Music" artists ever
less visible, as they are considered unable
to generate sufficient sales to justify expensive promotional campaigns by record
companies with declining revenues. This is
partly compensated by the development
of cheap digital recording technologies
and internet diffusion, but the hundreds of
festivals that take place during the summer
months now play an essential role in bringing these talented artists live to audiences.
It is here that Blues to Bop has established
its own niche and prestigious reputation, loved as it is by both musicians and fans who
for weeks look forward to the joyful frisson
they create.

Questo evento è diventato un momento
particolare grazie all'ospitalità offerta a
tutti dal Garage Cassarate SA. I musicisti del Festival colgono questa occasione
unica per suonare con colleghi che hanno incontrato qui a Lugano. Il concerto è
quindi in effetti un viaggio musicale,
un'improvvisazione che non assomiglia a
nessun'altro dei concerti in programma.
È indubbio che il concerto tradizionale
gospel, che si svolge anche quest'anno
nella splendida cornice della Cattedrale
di San Lorenzo a Lugano, sia un momento clou del Festival. Il Gospel ha illuminato e nutrito la scena musicale internazionale del '900 con innumerevoli artisti di altissimo livello creativo e innovativo. La diversità in programma metterà
in luce una parte dell'eredità che ci è
stata lasciata.
Texas Johnny Brown e Zach Prather saranno sicuramente gli animatori di questo "good-bye", una serata che ha le
sembianze di un incontro tra amici. I
musicisti infatti partecipano per il loro divertimento ed è quindi probabile che la
scelta finale verrà effettuata solo nelle
ore piccole di sabato!

Il veterano Cash McCall quest'anno è il
nostro ambasciatore del Chicago Blues.
Nato in campagna, nel Missouri, si arruolò nell'esercito per uscire da una vita
per lui troppo stretta. Dopo il congedo
si stabilì come cantante Gospel a Chicago, dove ha registrato dischi con the
Gospel Songbirds (con Otis Clay) e con
il Pilgrim Jubilee Singers.
All'età di soli 20 anni divenne compositore per la Chess Records, per la quale
ha pubblicato piú di 360 canzoni e ha
suonato nelle bands di Natalie Cole, Etta James, Willie Dixon e con diversi
gruppi leggendari come the Coasters e
The Temptations.
Per anni è stato molto legato a Willie
Dixon e di recente il nipote di questa figura chiave nella storia del Chicago
Blues, Alex Dixon, ha prodotto il suo CD
“The Vintage Room”.
Zach Prather non trova parole per
esprimere la stima e l'amore che ha per
il bluesman che lo ha incoraggiato
quando, all'epoca batterista, espresse il
desiderio di imparare a suonare la chitarra: McCall gliene ha subito prestato
una e ha seguito da vicino il suo progresso!
Blues to Bop si sente particolarmente
onorato nel presentare questa prima riunione svizzera tra il maestro e il suo
ex-studente.
Cash McCall has played gospel, soul
and blues during a distinguished career
spanning more than three decades.
Born in Missouri he enlisted in the army
to escape from the rural life. At the end
of his tour he settled in Chicago where
he quickly established himself as a gospel singer, playing and recording with
the Gospel Songbirds (with Otis Clay)
and the Pilgrim Jubilee Singers.
By the age of 20 he was a songwriter at
Chess Records where Muddy Waters,
Howlin' Wolf, Little Milton and others recorded his compostions: he has written
over 360! He has played and toured
with Minnie Ripperton, Natalie Cole, Etta
James and Willie Dixon, who was a very
close friend. Over the years he played
more and more blues, touring frequently
as a solo blues artist.
In Lugano he is supported by Chicagoan
Zach Prather who regards the older
man has his mentor and inspiration. In
fact, when the young Prather (who started his career as a drummer) decided to
take up guitar, McCall lent him an instrument and followed his progress very carefully, even finding him his first concerts.
Blues to Bop is very happy to present
their first reunion in Switzerland.

Il pianista gospel Reverendo Dwayne R.
Mason è considerato uno dei più geniali
pianisti di Chicago. Il suo stile è chiaramente di ispirazione spiritual, ma con forti radici
nel boogie, nel blues e nel jazz. Mason
porta con sé il suo trio con il potente cantante Sydney Evans e il batterista Christopher D. Jones, che fornisce l'importantissimo supporto ritmico. La musica di Mason
ha una caratteristica ipnotica che affascina
tutti e risulta unica, anche perchè Mason è
un autodidatta.
Nato a Chicago del 1961, è fondatore e
pastore del “The Body & Spirit Ministries”,
che si trova nella zona South Side, area
che ha fornito numerosi locali in cui la musica di Chicago si è evoluta. Il Reverendo è
orgoglioso di essere in grado di compiere
tre professioni contemporaneamente: il
pastore, l'impresario di pompe funebri e il
musicista.
Blues to Bop si rallegra che abbia trovato
modo e tempo per assentarsi dalla sua indaffarata vita per i tre giorni del festival,
offrendo certamente un contributo importantissimo al concerto in Cattedrale.
The gospel piano player Reverend Dwayne R. Mason, is considered one of the most
talented pianists in Chicago today. His piano style is spiritual but it is easy to hear the
deep roots of boogie, blues, and jazz piano in his playing. Reverend Mason appears at Blues to Bop, his first European
Festival, with Sydney Evans, a powerful gospel vocalist and psalmist, who performs on
five tracks of his wonderful CD “Glory
Glory” and Christopher D. Jones who
provides rhythmic support on drums. He
plays spiritually uplifting, soulful music with
a mesmerizing quality that will appeal to
everyone in a unique style due to being almost entirely self-taught.
Reverend Dwayne Robert Mason was
born in Chicago on November 21, 1961.
He founded and is the pastor of the Body
Soul & Spirit Ministries on Chicago's south
side. He takes great pride in juggling three
related professions all beginning with the
letter "M". He is a licensed minister, mortician, and musician.

Questo quartetto ha debuttato al festival “Jazz in the Alley” a Chicago l'anno
scorso. Il suo leader, la virtuosa batterista Shirazette Tinnin, spiega che “eseguiamo miei arrangiamenti che spaziano dal blues allo swing e dallo straightahead jazz al bop”. Il loro repertorio include brani come “Passion Dance” di
MyCoy Tyner, “Cute” da Neil Hefti e altri
come “Human Nature” di Michael Jackson, che sta preparando appositamente
per Blues to Bop e che assomigliano all'album “Chamelon” di Herbie Hancock.
Tutti i quattro musicisti hanno dei curricula incredibili e hanno collaborato nei
campi musicali piú diversi tra di loro: dal
Bluegrass al Gospel, dal brasiliano al
Fusion, e infatti, la collaborazione con
Blues to Bop è nata dopo che il direttore
artistico del Festival ha sentito Shirazette
in un gruppo jazz afro-peruviano!
L'approccio eclettico e contemporaneo
rende il gruppo ideale per il nostro festival mentre la loro frizzante e carismatica presenza non puó fare altro che garantirne il successo in questa loro prima
uscita dall'America.
This quartet debuted in Chicago last
year at the “Jazz in the Alley Festival”.
Le a d e r, virtuoso drummer and writer
Shirazette Tinnin, explains, “We will be
doing arrangements and originals of mine that are from a timeline era of blues
to swing, straight ahead to bop. Our
repertory includes tunes like “Passion
Dance” by McCoy Tyner, “Cute” by Neil
Hefti and Michael Jackon's “Human Nature” that I am arranging especially for
Blues to Bop. We also have some other
originals/arrangements that are similar
to Herbie Hancock's “Chamelon” album
that will feature me on drums.”
It is this eclectic contemporary approach
that makes the group ideal for a festival
that covers the styles that go from blues
to bop. All five musicians are at home
the widest variety of styles. This collaboration began after the festival's artistic
director had heard Shirazette in an
Afro-Peruvian Jazz group in a tiny venue in New York! The drive and enthusiasm they bring to their live performances is sure to embrace their listeners.

Questo quartetto del chitarrista Max de
Bernardi si concentra sulla musica degli
anni trenta, da dove , assieme al suo
collega Mauro Ferrarese, pesca liberamente, nel blues, nel jazz e nella country,
grazie alla sua profonda conoscenza
del periodo. La cantante del gruppo,
Veronica Sbergia è una grande ammiratrice di Memphis Minnie, musicista che fa
parte delle leggenda della blues mentre
Alessandra Cecala al contrabbasso
completa il gruppo con il suo suono ricco e una versatilità melodica che la rende una swingante presenza.
Il loro repertorio interpreta The Mills
Brothers, un gruppo vocale che ha fatto
strada per The Platters ; Blind Blake, musicista ragtime di cui si sente parlare
nuovamente, e che ha avuto un particolare effetto su Max che lo scoprì per caso ancora molto giovane e che rimane
tuttora il suo chitarrista preferito; il leggendario Blind Gary Davis, e, quasi di
sorpresa, il bluesman urbano Howlin'
Wolf. Vengono tessuti in un accattivante “show” che offre un variato viaggio
acustico dagli anni '30 fino ad oggi.
This quartet led by guitarist Max de Bernardi has its artistic heart in the music of
the thirties but has a clearly modern feel.
Bernardi has studied the period in detail
and his knowledge allows him to roam
sure-footedly through the blues, jazz
and country music of the decade, sharing his findings with his colleague, singer-guitarist and composer, Mauro Ferrarese. The group's singer, Ve r o n i c a
Sbergia is an admirer of the legendary
Memhis Minnie and the melodically
swinging presence of Alessandra Cecala
on the upright bass completes the combo.
Their repertoire reinterprets that of The
Mills Brothers, a vocal group that perdated the Platters, ragtime bluesman
Blind Blake, who has recently come back
into favour but who has been Bernardi's
favourite guitar player since he discove-
red his records while still a teenager, the
giant Blind Gary Davis and, rather surprisingly Chicago Bluesman Howlin'
Wolf. The result is a seamless weave
that creates not only a delightful show
but a carefully constructed musical journey from the thirties to the present day.

Durante gli anni '30 e '40 la musica popolare ebrea stava per diventare la musica

' merica. Klezmer si trasformo' in Yiddish Swing e le melodie importate dall'Europa trovarono nuova vita.
Musicisti come George Gershwin e Benny
Goodman mescolavano elementi presi
dalla cultura dei loro antenati per creare
una musica americana con radici ebree,
non solo ma anche musicisti non ebrei come Cab Colloway, che creo' la sua versione di una canzone folk “Ot Azoy” e Slim

In the 1930's and 40's Jewish popular music was becoming American popular music. Klezmer became Yiddish swing and
melodies transplanted from the Old Country found new life in jazz.
Musicians like George Gershwin and
Benny Goodman were mixing all of their
influences together and forging a new
music that was distinctively American but
had Jewish roots as well. And non-Jewish
musicians were hearing this music too.
Cab Calloway, influenced by cantorial
music, made his own version of the folk
song “Ot Azoy”. Slim Gaillard wrote
“Matzo Balls”, and the jazz singer Mildred
Bailey sang “Abi Gezint”. Sophie Tucker
sang in Yiddish with a distinctive American
blues feel, and the Barton Brothers fused
Yiddish/English comedy with jazzy/klez-
mer sounds.
Paul Shapiro's Ribs and Brisket Revue celebrates this bluesy, hard swinging, comic,
distinctively American music with a Yiddish
flavor. Paul's spirited sax and clarinet are
joined by sensational vocalists Cilla
Owens and John-Martin Green and the
sizzling rhythm section of Gary Schreiner,
Booker King and Tony Lewis.

Il cantante, chitarrista e compositore Texas Johnny Brown appartiene al genere
del Texas Blues, che si è sviluppato negli
anni '40 e che ha saputo assorbire la
musica country di Lighnin' Hopkins unendola alle bands orchestrali come quella
di Amos Milburn: artisti con cui Brown
ha collaborato, sebbene il suo stile sia
legato anche a T-Bone Walker. Molto
stimato dai colleghi, è rimasto quasi sconosciuto al pubblico più ampio fino agli
anni '90, anche perché solo dopo quasi
50 anni di carriera ha registrato degli
album con il proprio nome.
E' sua la chitarra nei primi dischi di Ruth
Brown per l'Atlantic e in quelli di Amos
Milburn per l'Aladdin. Durante gli anni
'50 e '60 era chitarrista di Bobby “Blue”
Bland per cui ha scritto il brano di successo “One Step From The Blues”. Pro-
prio quando sembrava si fosse ritirato
dalla musica ha registrato i premiatissimi
brani “Blues Defender” e “Nothin' But
The Truth”.
I suoi sono i veri blues del Texas e per
questo il Blues to Bop Festival si sente
onorato di presentarlo.
Bluesman Texas Johnny Brown belongs
to the style that developed during the
'40s and incorporated the country music
Lighnin' Hopkins and the hot bands of
artists like Amos Milburn though Brown
himself still shows that part of his playing
is rooted in T- Bone Wa l k e r. Te x a s
Johnny has had a long career as a
highly respected artist without being
known to the wider blues audience. He
played on the early Ruth Brown sides
for Atlantic and on the Amos Milburn
masterpieces for Aladdin and on countless other for which he was never credited.
During the 50s and 60s he was lead guitarist for soul blues giant Bobby “Blues”
Band and wrote his hit record, the
haunting, “One Step For The Blues”.
During the 80s it was assumed he had
retired but he burst back on the scene
with his award winning “Blues Defender”
album followed by “Nothin' But The
Truth”.
He is the real deal as far as the Texas
Blues are concerned and Blues to Bop is
delighted to have him perform.

Shirley Smith aveva solo tre anni quando i suoi genitori, il cantante blues Richard Smith e la cantante gospel Elsie
notarono qualcosa di particolare nel
modo in cui la bambina si divertiva al
pianoforte. Infatti a 9 anni il noto scrittore T.J. Hemphill decise che era degna
di particolare attenzione e la ragazzina
fece progressi sorprendenti. Un altro
mentore significativo arrivo' nella persona dell'insegnante Terry-Ross e a soli 13
anni Shirley aveva gia' degli ingaggi
professionali.
Attualmente la Smith e' Minister of Music
per la Potter's House Christian Fellowship a Jacksonville nel Florida, dove il Vescovo Vaughan McLaughlin guida la sua
carriera. Ha gia' suonato e cantato con
dei grandi del gospel contemporaneo
compresi, Fred Hammond, Cece Wi-
nans, Yolanda Adams e tanti altri. E'
molto richiesta e apprezzata come direttore musicale e docente e viaggia continuamentre per workshops e conventions
in America.
Shirley Smith was only three years old
when her parents, blues singer Richard
Smith and his gospel singer wife Elsie
realised that their daughter's interest in
the piano was something far more than
just creating noise. They bought her one
and she made such progress that when
she was nine the writer and T.J. Hemphill
picked her out for special, intensive instruction. A few years later her teacher
Terry-Ross was to prove an important
influence. The young student was so
good that she was playing professionally in church when only 13.
She is now Minister of Music at the Potter's House Christian Fellowship in Jacksonville, Florida where Bishop Vaughan
McLaughlin oversees and guides her car e e r. She has shared the stage with
many of the biggest names in contem-
porary gospel including Fred Hammond,
Cece Winans, Yolanda Adams and
many others. She is in great demand as
a teacher and leader and travel all over
America to workshops and conventions.

The Flag è una giovane band ticinese (giovane per l'età dei musicisti, tra i 17 e i 25
anni, e perché esiste solo dal 2005) appartenente a quella generazione che non si
sente legata a versioni originali dei blues a
lei gradite, bensì libera di attingere da molteplici fonti che, nel suo caso, vanno dai
film dei Blues Brothers, ad Eric Clapton,
Buddy Guy, Jimi Hendrix e alla Chicago di
Muddy Waters.
Come spiega il suo leader Igor Negrini,
“Siamo nati suonando il blues, comunque,
con il passare del tempo e con l'arrivo di
nuovi musicisti abbiamo introdotto anche
sonorità rock e funky. Abbiamo gusti molto eterogenei all'interno della band, e dal
miscuglio di questi gusti abbiamo creato un
sound che è solo il nostro e che definirei
“blues perturbante”.
Una definizione che viene enfatizzata dalla
carismatica passione che i musicisti comunicano dal palco, grazie anche a una spontanea coreografia evolutasi in poco tempo.
Il palco verrà curato più del solito per il
Blues to Bop spiega Negrini, “Perché proporremo dei concerti molto originali. Saremo accompagnati per molti dei brani dal
trio di fiati della “Swing Factory”, un'esperienza che non abbiamo mai fatto finora.
Stiamo lavorando tanto per questi concerti,
ci teniamo molto perché sono il coronamento di tante fatiche.”
The Flag is a young band from Ticino
(founded in 2005 with members aged 1725) that belongs to the generation that
does not feel stylistically chained to the original versions of the blues they love but
free to combine elements taken from many
sources which, in their case, come from the
Blues Brothers films and the music of Clapton, Buddy Guy, Jimi Hendrix and the classic Chicago Blues of Muddy Waters.
As their leader Igor Negrini explains, “We
started out playing Blues but when new
members arrived we became more rock
and funky. We all have different tastes
and together we now have our own sound
that I like to call “Pertubative Blues”.
Their dynamic stage show, that has evolved naturally over time, confirms their defi-
nition.
However, for Blues to Bop The Flag have
taken things a step further, “We have prepared a special concert that includes The
Swing Factory horn trio. Something we
have never done before.
We've put a lot of work into this and it represents a big step forward.”

sono i suoi concerti come solista ad essere
particolarmente apprezzati e infatti e' in
questa veste che apparira' giovedi sera.
Judith Emeline e' nata a Birmingham in Inghilterra ma dal 1991 al 2005 risiede in
canton Ticino, dove si e' fatta conoscere in
numerose occasioni per la bellezza della
Ian Siegal is widely considered Europe's
leading bluesman. He is well known in
Canton Ticino where his many fans will
welcome his return, this time as a solo performer with concerts on Thursday and Friday.
Texan Rich DelGrosso is a world renowned
mandolin player. He is in leading a workshop near Lugano (www.aonzomandolinschool.com) so the festival is very happy to
have him as a guest for one concert on Friday. He will be accompanied by fellow Texas Johnny Brown and the musicians have
already rehearsed in Houston. Their show
is sure to be one of the highlights of the
whole event.
Judith Emeline was born in Birmingham,
England but is very well known to jazz and
blues fans during the fourteen years she li-
ved here. She appeared at just about
every festival and club as well as making
many television appearance. She was also
lead singer with the popular Zurich Jazz
Allstars. Judith is appearing on Saturday
night and will be featured in the gospel
concert on Sunday. However, given her
exuberant love of music and her charismatic personality it will not be a surprise to
hear her on stage with other musicians. e
At 26, the pianist, singer and songwriter Julien Brunetaud won the French Blues
award for the best European pianist in
2005. He has just received the French Hot
club prize as the musician of the year for
his album « Orleans street boogie ».In Paris
he heads a trio and a quartet but is a
great solo performer as his Thursday night
concert will show.
