A town with a thousand
years of history

Origin of the coat-of-arms
It figures on the frontispiece of the “Livre des privilèges et
libertés de la ville de Manosque”, (book of privileges and
freedoms of the town of Manosque) printed in Lyon by Jean
Broto in September 1559.
The 4 hands have several versions. Here are three of them:
- Canting arms (manus - main - manuasca) in the Middle Ages.
- The town had 4 gates, 4 quarters, 4 churches
- The grouping together of 4 villages around Manosque
(Toutes Aures, Saint Pierre, Mayme, Montaigut) which were
abandoned around XVth century.

L’origine dello stemma
Esso figura sul frontespizio del libro dei privilegi e delle libertà
della città di Manosque, stampato a Lione da Jean Broto nel
settembre del 1559.
Le spiegazioni sull’origine delle 4 mani sono varie, eccone tre:
- Stemma parlante (manus - mano - manuasca) nel Medioevo.
- La città aveva 4 porte, 4 quartieri, 4 chiese.
- 4 villaggi circostanti a Manosque (Toutes Aures, Saint Pierre,
Mayme, Montaigut) che furono abbandonati nel XV secolo.
“Everything is in God’s hands”
is the motto above the escutcheon of MANOSQUE
“Quarterly, 1st and 4th Azure, 2nd and 4th Gules, first and
third charged with a dexter hand appaumé Argent;
second and fourth to the sinister of same”.
“Tutto è nelle mani di Dio”
è il motto che sovrasta lo scudo di MANOSQUE.
“Inquartato: nel primo e quarto d’azzurro, alla mano
destra appalmata d’argento, nel secondo e terzo
di rosso alla mano sinistra appalmata pure d’argento”.
Manosque: a few dates
Manosque in poche date
In year 900, Manosque was devasted by the Sarrasins.
982: First court of Guillaume « the liberator », the first count of
Provence. He lived in a castle at the top of the Mont d’Or hill of
which one wall is still standing.
1206: By means of a charter, Guillaume IV, the last count of
Forcalquier, granted privileges to the town through a charter
and an organization which was to manage the town up until the
French revolution in 1789.
1355-1385: Manosque extended its Eastern enclosure, built its
ramparts and gates to defend itself against the « Free
Companies » which were laying waste to Provence.
1370: Legend has it that Queen Jeanne visited Manosque in
spring when the almond-trees were in flower and christened it
« Manosque la fleurie » (Manosque of the flowers).
1516: It seems that during king François the 1st’s visit to
Manosque on 17th January, Pérone de Voland preferred to
expose her face to sulfur fumes and give up her beauty rather
than succumb to the desires of the womanizing King, hence the
name « Manosque la pudique » (Manosque the modest).
1708: A terrible earthquake, followed by a harsh winter when
wolves came into the town to find food.
1772: The commune acquired the Hôtel de Pochet which is now
the Town Hall.
XIXth century: The town was rehabilitated but its medieval
aspect was to disappear little by little for reasons of hygiene:
The Guilhempierre gate was demolished, towers were torn
down and the streets widened.
1959: Installation of the Atomic Research Station in Cadarache,
18 km from Manosque, which led to the rapid development of the
town. The small country town of Manosque (5 000 inhabitants in
1950), became the town with the highest population in the
department of the Alpes de Haute Provence (25 000 inhabitants
currently), surrounded by cutting-edge industry.

982: Prima contesa di Guglielmo detto il liberatore, primo conte
di Provenza. Risiedeva in un castello situato in cima alla collina
del Mont d’or (Monte d’oro) di cui restano ancora poche mura.
1206: Tramite concessione, Guglielmo IV, ultimo conte di
Forcalquier, accorda alla città privilegi e un’organizzazione che
servirà ad amministrare la città sino alla rivoluzione francese
del 1789.
1355-1385: Manosque allarga il suo muro di cinta dal lato est,
costruisce bastioni e porte per difendersi contro le « Grandes
compagnies » bande di mercenari che devastavano la Provenza.
1370: Una leggenda racconta che la regina Giovanna visita
Manosque. È primavera e i mandorli sono in fiore, per cui
Giovanna battezza la città « Manosque la fiorita ».
1516: Si tramanda che al momento del passaggio di re
Francesco I a Manosque, Pérone de Voland preferii sacrificare
la sua bellezza esponendo il viso ai vapori di zolfo piuttosto che
cedere alla lussuria del re galante, per cui la città venne
chiamata « Manosque la pudica ».
1708: Terribile terremoto, al quale seguì un inverno rigoroso
durante il quale i lupi scesero a cercare le prede nelle strade
della città.
1772: Il comune acquista l’Hôtel de Pochet per farne l’attuale
palazzo di città.
XIX secolo: La città diventa più moderna e, poco a poco,
l’aspetto medioevale scompare per ragioni sanitarie. La porta
Guilhempierre è distrutta, alcune torri sono abbattute, le strade
vengono allargate.
1959: Il centro di studi atomici sceglie come sede Cadarache
(18 km) ciò permette lo sviluppo rapido della città. Da un
piccolo borgo rurale (5000 abitanti nel 1950), Manosque
diventa la città più popolosa del dipartimento delle Alpi di
Alta-Provenza (25 000 abitanti ai giorni nostri), al centro di una
rete di industrie di avanguardia.
The Carzou Fondation
Set in the church of the former Convent of the Presentation,
the Carzou Fondation is unique. An international famous
painter and sculptor, Jean Carzou painted a fresco which
measures over 666 m² representing the allegory of the
Apocalypse, told through the contemporary history of the
great genocides.

One of the main mining sites of the Manosque region
was in the vallon of Gaude to the north-east of the city.
The mining of lignite was carried out over several decades,
from 1831 to 1965 when the mine was closed down.

Nel Nord-Est di Manosque, nella valle di Gaude, si
trovava uno dei principali luoghi di estrazione mineraria
della zona di Manosque. Lo sfruttamento di lignite
durerà vari decenni, dal 1831 sino al 1965, data della
chiusura della miniera.

La Fondazione Carzou
Stabilita nella chiesa dell’ex convento, Couvent de la
Présentation, la Fondazione Carzou è un luogo unico.
Pittore e scultore di fama internazionale, Jean Carzou ha
realizzato un affresco di oltre 666 m² che rappresenta
l’allegoria dell’Apocalisse, raccontata attraverso la storia
contemporanea di grandi genocidi.

E I Palazzo Comunale
Questo antico palazzo di stile Rinascimentale
«alla genovese» è stato acquistato nel 1770
dal comune per sostituire il vecchio municipio
un tempo addossato alla chiesa St Sauveur e
che era stato sede dei consoli dal 1397.
Apparteneva al signor de POCHET, avvocato
del Parlamento di Aix en Provence.
F I Passaggio dei “Greniers”
Vecchia costruzione aggiunta al antico
palazzo de Pochet, i consoli avevano
trasformato l’edifi cio in granai communali
nel XVIII secolo. Non esistono più oggi.
G I Cortile “des Carmes”
Nel passato, si trovava qui il Convento dei
Carmes, costruito nel XIV secolo.

I I Hôtel Issautier
This house is characteristic because of its
rows of eave tiles, its an inner courtyard
and its staircase with intermediate galleries
leading to the different floors.
U I Carzou Foundation
A former Convent of the Presentation, the
building is now the head office of the Carzou
Foundation. In 1984, the town commissioned
Jean Carzou to paint a fresco inspired by the
Apocalypse of St John.

H I Guilhempierre Gate
Guilhem Pierre was the personal notary of
Guillaume IV, count of Forcalquier. He
owned a house located close to that gate.
The gate was destroyed on the XIXth century
and rebuilt in 1986.
T I The Jean Giono Centre
A late XVIIIth century mansion/town house.
It belonged to Mr. De RAFFIN, a consul in
the French Revolution. It now houses the
Jean Giono Centre, a museum devoted to
the writer born in the city [1895-1970].

G I Courtyard of the Carmelites
This is the place where used to be the
former Carmes Convent, a rich religious
institution built in the XIVth century.
S I Saunerie Gate
In the Middle Ages, four entrances situated
on the four cardinal points allowed access
to the town. The southern porte called the
Saunerie («salt entrance») was built in the
late fourteenth century. Under the gate, lies
the town’s town’s coat of arms. The four
hands symbolyse the unity of entire
Manosque territory and the gathering of its
inhabitants.

Ancient building at the back of the Hotel
de Pochet (town hall today), the consuls
installed the communal granaries on the
XVIIIth century. Nothing remains today.
R I Birthplace of Jean Giono
A plaque indicates that the writer Jean
Giono was born in this house in March
1895. He lived all his childhood and youth in
the house opposite, at 14 rue grande.

E I Town Hall
This former mansion built in a Renaissance
style known as “à la génoise” was acquired
in 1770 by the commune to replace the
former «town house» which was joined to
the church St Sauveur, where the consuls
had held their headquarters since 1397.
It belonged to Mr. de POCHET, a lawyer at
the Aix en Provence ‘parlement ‘’.

Up until the XVIIIth century, the cemetery of
St Sauveur was located behind the church
in this square. Then it was removed out of
the city.

D I Barri Promenade
This promenade is located on part of the line
of the former walkway built in the ramparts.
P I St Sauveur Church
This church (XIIth-XIVth centuries) was
consecrated in 1372. Romanesque in its
low parts of construction, it is Gothic in its
superstructure. The campanile, which dates
from 1725, is classified as a historic
monument because it is one of the most
finely worked campaniles in the entire
Mediterranean basin.

C I Observantins Square
This square is the most ancient in
Manosque. At this place used to be the
Observantins Convent (monks of St
François of the Observance) dating back
to the XIVth-XVth centuries. Today, only the
vestiges of the church remain.
O I Caragou Square
Here in the past, was the Convent of the
Bernardines, founded in the XVIIth century.
It welcomed wealthy young girls.

B I Marcel Pagnol Square
This square that helds the name of the
famous writer born in Aubagne used to
be the entire hospital with its gardens.
In 1662, Louis XIV orders the setting of
the «charities» devoted to take care of the
beggars and abandoned children.
N I Contrôle Square
For centuries, an octroi had to be paid (a
kind of internal duty) to bring goods of any
nature into towns. Before being abolished
after the liberation, Manosque’s octroi was
located in this square, hence its name.

A I Soubeyran Gate
Situated at the northern end of the
medieval walls, the Soubeyran Porte (XVIIIth
century) stands at the highest point of the
town. In the Middle Ages, it commanded
the entrance to the town. The clock tower
and the campanile which rise above it,
were added in the nineteenth century.
B I Piazza Marcel Pagnol
Su questa piazza, col nome del celebre
scrittore nato vicino a Marsiglia, si trovava
l’ospedale Santa Barbe con i suoi giardini.
Nel 1662, Luigi XIV decide della creazione
di «charités» per accogliere mendicanti e
bambini abbandonati.

M I Church of Notre Dame de Romigier
Located in the heart of the town, this
church is much more than a sanctuary: it is
the soul of the town. It is probably here
that the first Manosque settlement
occurred, long before the Christian era; The
chevet, with its Romanesque architecture
(Xth - XIIth centuries), is the oldest part of
the church.
H I Porta Guilhempierre
Guilhem Pierre fu notaio di Guglielmo IV,
ultimo Conte di Forcalquier che abitava
vicino a questa porta. Fu distruta nel XIX
secolo e costruita di nuovo nel 1986.
I I Hôtel Issautier
Questo palazzo «à génoise» si distingue
con i suoi cortile e scala.
J I Hôtel de Gassaud
E’ uno dei più bei palazzi della città (fi ne del
rinascimento provenzale).
K I Hôtel d’Herbès
Palazzo di stile Rinascimentale oggi sede

Nella parte bassa della via d’Aubette vi è la
Porta di Aubette (XIV secolo) situata ad’est
della città. Fu demolita nel 1935.
M I Chiesa Notre Dame de Romigier
Situata al centro della città, è più di un
santuario, è l’anima stessa della città.
Indubbiamente, il primo abitante di Manosque
si è insediato in questo luogo prima ancora
dell’era cristiana. L’abside della Chiesa Notre
Dame de Romigier, di stile romanico (X –XII
secolo), è la parte più antica dell’edifi cio.
N I Piazza “du Contrôle”
Per secoli, per fare entrare le merci di ogni
tipo in città, bisognava pagare un dazio
(detto “contrôle”, controllo). Soppresso
dopo la liberazione, il dazio si pagava in
questa piazza di Manosque.
O I Piazza del “Caragou”
Qui si trovava il Convento delle

P I Chiesa St Sauveur
Questo edifi cio di epoca più tarda (XII–XIV
secolo) fu consacrato nel 1372. Romanica
nelle strutture inferiori, è gotica nelle
sovrastrutture. Il campanile, costituito nel
1725, è iscritto nell’elenco dei Monumenti
Storici tutelati, poiché è uno dei più
elaborati di tutto il bacino mediterraneo.
Q I Piazza “des Ormeaux”
Fino al XVIII secolo, il cimiterio della chiesa
St Sauveur era situato dietro l’edifi cio di
questa piazza. Poi, fu collocato fuori dalla
città.
R I Casa natale di Jean Giono
Una targa indica che lo scrittore Jean
GIONO è nato in questa casa nel marzo del
1895. Trascorse tutta la sua infanzia e la sua
giovinezza nella casa di fronte, al 14 rue
grande.
S I Porta Saunerie
Nel Medio Evo, quattro porte situate nei
quattro punti cardinali consentivano
l’accesso alla città. La porta Sud detta della
Saunerie («porta del sale»), è stata
costruita alla fi ne del XIV secolo. Sotto la
porta, è rappresentato il blasone della città.
Le quattro mani che lo compongono
testimoniano dell’unità del territorio di
Manosque e dell’unione dei suoi abitanti.

Un tempo convento della Presentazione,
l’edifi cio oggi è sede della Fondazione
Carzou. Nel 1984, la città ha ordinato a Jean
Carzou un affresco che ripercorre
l’Apocalisse secondo San Giovanni.

A I Porta del Soubeyran
Situata a nord delle mura di cinta medievali, la
Porta del Soubeyran (XVIII secolo) è la più alta
della città. Comandava l’entrata della città nel
Medio Evo. La torre campanaria dell’orologio,
e il campanile in ferro battuto alla singolare
forma di pera, che la sovrastano sono stati
aggiunti nel XIX secolo.

Created in 1992 in a beautiful XVIIIth century Provencal
building, the Centre Jean Giono offers an area which is
completely dedicated to the writer (permanent and
temporary exhibitions, a video library, libraries…).
Literary walks are organized all the year, in Manosque and
the surrounding area. Discover all the places which were so
dear to Giono in the magnificent landscapes and readings of
extracts from his works.

Lou Paraïs, house of Jean Giono
Il Centro Jean Giono
The house was bought by Jean Giono in 1929 and he
transformed and extended it. It was here where he wrote
most of his works.Your visit will take you to his library and its
several thousand books, which show his literary tastes, his
intellectual curiosity and the immense culture. “Lou Paraïs”
is not a museum, it was also a place where Jean Giono is still
present in every room. Guided tours every Friday afternoon
(on prior booking). “Lou Paraïs” is also home to the
Association des Amis de Jean Giono, created in 1972 by
Henri Fluchère and Aline Giono.
Creato nel 1992 in un bell’edificio in stile provenzale del XVIII
secolo, il Centro Jean Giono propone un’area completamente
dedicata allo scrittore (mostre permanenti e temporanee,
videoteca, biblioteche…).
Passeggiate letterarie sono organizzate tutto l’anno, a
Manosque e nei dintorni. Scoprite i luoghi cari a Giono

Exhibitions on Jean Giono
Jean GIONO, the son of a shoemaker from the Piedmont in
Italy and a mother who took in ironing, was born in
Manosque on 30th March 1895.
During his childhood and adolescence, he lived in the
old town, at 14, Rue Grande. He was a bank clerk until
the 14-18 war where he was a private on the French front.
Jean GIONO, figlio di un calzolaio di origine piemontese e di
una madre stiratrice, nasce a Manosque il 30 marzo 1895.
Visse durante l’infanzia e l’adolescenza nella parte più antica
della città, al numero 14 della Rue Grande. Impiegato in una
banca fino alla guerra di 14-18 alla quale partecipa come
semplice soldato sul fronte francese.
1920 Death of his father – The author married Elise Maurin
with whom he had 2 daughters, Aline and Sylvie.
1929 First publications with the “Trilogie de Pan” (Colline,
Un de Baumugnes and in 1930, Regain). He decided to
make a living from writing. At the same time, he met Lucien
Jacques, who was to become his life-long friend.
1930 Publication of Manosque des Plateaux, Naissance de
l’Odyssée. His success was increasing fast, along with his
production. He purchased his house, “Lou Paraïs”, on the
slopes of the hill called Le Mont d’Or.
1935 Birth of a holiday community in Le Contadour
(Near Banon).
1939/45 Giono, a pacifist and antimilitarist, was arrested
in the early days of the Second World War. He was freed on
11th November 1939. He returned to his work as an author
and was arrested once again in August 1944 and freed in
February 1945.
1946 Death of his mother.
1954 Giono became a member of the Académie Goncourt.
He published works up until the day before he died, on 8th
October 1970.

Il suo successo è sempre crescente, le sue opere sempre più
numerose. Acquista la casa di “Lou Paraïs”, situata sulle
pendici della collina del Mont d'Or.
1935 Nascita della comunità di vacanze al Contadour
(Vicino Banon).
1939/45 Giono, pacifista e contro le armi, è arrestato sin dai
primi giorni della seconda guerra mondiale. Viene liberato
nell'11 novembre 1939 e riprende allora il suo lavoro di
scrittore. È di nuovo arrestato nell’agosto del 1944 e liberato
nel febbraio 1945.
1946 Morte della madre.
1954 Giono membro dell’Académie Goncourt.
Pubblica sino alla vigilia della sua morte che sopravviene
nell’8 ottobre 1970.

Jean Giono acquista nel 1929, trasforma e ingrandische
questa casa dove scrive la maggior parte delle sue opere. Il
visitatore sarà immerso nella biblioteca dalle migliaia di
opere, testimonianza dei gusti letterari, della curiosità
intellettuale e dell’immensa cultura dello scritore. «Lou Paraïs»
non è un museo ma un luogo dove la presenza di Giono
permane dappertutto. Visite guidate ogni venerdi’
pomeriggio con appuntamento. « Lou Paraïs » è anche la sede
dell’associazione « Les Amis de Jean Giono » (amici di Jean
Giono), creata da Henri Fluchère e Aline Giono.

On your hikes around the Manosque area, discover the 5 hills
which surround the town and enjoy a magnificent view over
the old town and its burnished roofs.
To the north-east, a tower, which is all that remains of a
castle built by Guillaume the Liberator stands on top of the
Mont d’Or Hill. An easy family walk takes you along the
« Giono, Poète de l’Olivier » trail, for a panoramic view from
the top of this hill.
To the West, the colline Toutes Aures.
There was once a castle on this hill, along with two churches
and a hamlet. For over 280 years, it has been one of the
favourite meeting-places for the people of Manosque for the
traditional Easter Monday « saucissonnade ». Commented
visits of its chapel are organized regularly by the
association “Les Amis de San Brancaï”.
On the colline des Spels, you can discover Manosque in a
different way on an original itinerary above the “restanques”.
A remarkable view over the town and the Mediterranean
forest, and a glimpse of the past with the Bori de Pain de
Sucre.

Un patrimonio Naturale Notevole
Durante un’escursione intorno a Manosque, scoprirai le
cinque colline che circondano la città e potrai approfittare di
un magnifico panorama sulla città vecchia, a forma di pera e
con i tetti patinati.
A nord est, in cima alla collina del Mont d’Or esiste una torre,
unica traccia di un castello fortificato da Guglielmo detto il
liberatore. Una passeggiata facile da fare in famiglia, lungo il
sentiero « Giono, Poeta dell’Olivo », dove si gode di un
panorama a 360°.
Situata ad ovest, la collina Toutes Aures. Ad un’epoca, su
questa collina vi erano un castello, due chiese e un casale.
Rappresenta l’appuntamento importante per gli abitanti della
città da oltre 280 anni all’occasione della tradizionale
« saucissonnade » del lunedì dell’Angelo. Sono regolarmente
organizzate visite commentate della cappella che vi si trova,
a cura dell’associazione Amis de San Brancaï.
Sulla collina degli Spels, potrai approfittare di un itinerario
originale, sospeso sulle restanques (giardino a terrazze) per
scoprire Manosque in un altro modo. Sorpresa di un
paesaggio notevole sulla città, evocazione del passato nella
scoperta del Bori de Pain de Sucre e la foresta mediterranea.

Is there a better way to start the year than tasting January
new oil?
But before it gets to your table, people with a passion have
put a great deal of work into it. Watch the olive-growers
pampering, spoiling and petting their trees. They stroke them,
prune them, talk to them and listen to the wind singing in their
leaves. The olive tree, this majestic, haunting untamed mystic
defies them and despises them to give its best.
In November the olive-growers busy themselves around the
trees. Everyone helps with picking, by hand or with an olivecomb. It’s a joyful moment in good company.
Olives of different colours (green, yellow, pinkish, purple
or black) hide behind the silvery leaves, as if they wanted to
make harvesting more difficult and proclaim:
Olive oil is a noble product and is to be deserved.
324 km long, the Durance starts at Montgenèvre (HautesAlpes) and flows into the Rhône near Avignon (Vaucluse).
Divided in 3 parts (High, Medium and Low Durance), the
Durance serve the region’s economy. The Durance was
feared in days gone by. Today, besides the power resources
provided by hydroelectric production, agriculture benefits
most from these developments.

L’olivo, quest’albero maestoso è un mistico che assilla e non
si lascia ammansire, li schernisce, li guarda dall’alto in basso
per dare loro alla fine il meglio di sé. Nel mese di novembre,
gli olivicoltori sono tutti indaffarati intorno agli alberi...
Chiedono aiuto agli amici, ai parenti e ognuno contribuisce
alla raccolta, che sia a mano o con il pettine... Tutto si svolge
nel buonumore.

nascondono dietro le foglie argentate per complicare la raccolta
e far dire che l’olio di oliva è un prodotto nobile che si merita.
Lunga di 324 km, nasce a Montgenèvre (Alti Alpi) e si getta
nel fiume Rhône vicino a Avignone (Vaucluse). Divisa in
3 parti (l’Alta, la Media e la Bassa Duranza), irriga l’economia
regionale. La Duranza era nel passato temuta a causa delle
sue piene devastanti. Oltre le risorse energetiche che offre la
produzione idroelettrica, l’agricoltura è la maggior
beneficiaria di questi lavori di sistemazione.
Il lago “la Forestière”
A cinque minuti dall’uscita dell’autostrada, i 9 ettari della
Forestière fanno parte dei piccoli scrigni di freschezza che
rendono felici i pescatori locali o quelli di passaggio.

Get a taste of the region
Per assaporare

Recipe for anchoïade
Ingredients: 1 jar of anchovies in salt, 1 glass of vinegar,
¼ litre olive oil, pepper, vegetables (celery, tomatoes,
cauliflower, carrots, endives, cucumber).
Leave vegetables raw but peeled: cut the celery, endives,
carrots and cucumber in sticks and the cauliflower into
florets. Remove salt from anchovies under running water
and remove central bone. Melt them gently in a saucepan,
on low heat, stirring all the time to obtain a creamy
mixture. Add pepper and taste. When the mixture is cold,
add the olive oil little by little, to taste. Whisk with a fork or
in a blender. Serve the anchoïade in a bowl with the
vegetables arranged around it. Enjoy the crisp vegetables
with the anchoïade dip.

Le verdure devono essere crude e mondate: il sedano,
l’indivia, le carote, il cetriolo in bastoncini, il cavolfiore a
pezzetti. Sciacquate le acciughe sotto un filo d’acqua del
rubinetto togliendo la lisca centrale. Lasciate disfare le
acciughe piano piano in una pentola, a fuoco lento, sempre
mescolando fino a ottenere una crema. Aggiungete del
pepe e assaggiate. Una volta raffreddata, aggiungeteci
l’olio d’oliva, a poco a poco, secondo i vostri gusti. Sbattete
il tutto con una forchetta o con il mixer. Impiattate
l’anchoide in una ciotolina e le verdure attorno. Le verdure
si mangiano ad una ad una, inzuppate nell’anchoide.

Lavender AND Lavandin !
Lavender is a bushy perennial which has been known since
Antiquity. Also known as true or fine lavender, it is grown at
altitudes between 500 and 1 500 metres around Banon,
Simiane la Rotonde, Revest du Bion and Sault.
Lavandin is a hybrid which is finer than true lavender. It
grows at heights between 500 and 900m near Céreste and
around Forcalquier.
The Valensole plateau is a festival of colour with the blue of
lavender as far as the eye can see.

Lavender and lavandin flower from the middle of June to the
middle of July (according to sunlight and weather conditions).
Follow the Routes de la Lavande (lavender roads) with the
Grande Traversée des Alpes.

The Observatoire is a famous site which develops ambitious
projects in the fields of observation and biodiversity. It also has
an important observation station for atmospheric science.
Public and school visits are organised all year round: the great
dome and the emblematic 1.93 m telescope (the only one in
activity which can be visited in France), screenings of a
documentary on the activities of the Observatoire de Haute
Provence, conferences, observations, shows, exhibitions, etc.

The Luberon Natural Regional Park
Manosque in the Luberon is situated in a lively and preserved
area in the heart of Provence. The Luberon Natural Regional
Park stretches over 185 000 hectares around the Luberon
range ( 1 125 metres at the top of the Mourre Nègre). It is
characterized by a region which is remarkable for the wealth
and diversity of its natural environments, its built heritage and
its landscapes…
Discover the Luberon

You will take the direction of Montfuron, a charming and
peaceful little village perched at a height of 675 metres. A
superb windmill, built 350 years ago, crowns the hill. Next
you will take the road to Reillanne, a village perched at 550
metres and with a rich past going back to the prehistoric
times. Take the road to Vachères, a medieval village ; the
next leg takes you to Oppedette, well-known for its canyon.
On the road, you will make a stop to the Valsaintes Abbaye,
haven of peace in an extremely beautiful garden.
The road takes you to the charming village of Viens
(Vaucluse). You will go on in the direction of Rustrel, with its
famous “Colorado Provençal”.
You can go back to Manosque, crossing Apt, a 20 000
inhabitants city situated in the heart of the Luberon Natural
Regional Park, and Céreste, an old Roman village.

A pleasant but twisted road. Be carefull !
When you have crossed the Durance river, take the road to
Valensole, a village well-known for its fields of lavender.
Riez, a village which dates back to Roman times, will be the
next stop on you road. And then, getting through
Puimoisson, you will arrive in another incredibly beautiful
typical Provençal village : Moustiers-Sainte-Marie,
recognized as one of the most beautiful villages in France.
Then on to La Palud Sur Verdon, gate of the Grand Canyon of
the Verdon, you will go on the “Route des Crêtes”, on the
right bank of the Verdon. You will turn back via La Palud sur
Verdon and Moustiers Sainte Marie and follow the road in
the direction of Roumoules, Riez, Allemagne en Provence, St
Martin de Brômes and Gréoux les Bains.
You will return back to Manosque in an enchanting landscape.

BISOGNA SAPERE
La strada è piacevole ma abbastanza sinuosa.
Dopo avere attraversato la Duranza, prendi la direzione di
Valensole, conosciuta per i suoi campi di lavanda. Riez, paese
di origine Romana, sarà la tua nuova meta. Arriverai poi in un
altro villaggio tipicamente provenzale, molto pittoresco :
Moustiers-Sainte-Marie, al quale è stato conferito il titolo di
uno dei più bei borghi di Francia. Continuando fino a La Palud
sur Verdon, seguirai la «Route des Crêtes» sulla riva destra del
Verdon.
Per concludere il circuito, passerai di nuovo da MoustiersSainte-Marie, poi da Roumoules, Riez, Allemagne en
Provence, St Martin de Brômes e Gréoux les Bains.
Tornarai a Manosque attraversando paesaggi di belleza.

An economic center
Manosque, with a population of 25000, is a living area and
economic cluster for the department. A strategic town in the
heart of Haute-Provence and the new energies valley, it has
an adapted and modern service offer thanks to its facilities
(Hospital complex, sports complex, international school,
theatre, museums, etc.).
Come and discover the biggest applied research project in
the world whose objective is to create a source of energy.
Currently under construction near Manosque, ITER is a very
large scale scientific project which aims at demonstrating the
scientific and technological feasibility of fusion energy and
open the way to its industrial and commercial operation.
Jointly produced by 34 countries, ITER will be the biggest
fusion reactor in the world. This nuclear energy has a certain
number of advantages, particularly in terms of security and
environmental respect. The guided tour of the site, combined
with an educational presentation, will help you to understand
the scope of the project and the state of the work in progress.

Aerea di attività, polo economico del dipartimento, Manosque
è una città di 25 000 abitanti. Città strategica nel cuore
dell’Alta Provenza e della valle delle nuove energie, essa

fonte di energia. Il sito, che è attualmente in costruzione nelle
vicinanze di Manosque, ITER è un progetto scientifico a grande
scala, atto a dimostrare la fattibilità scientifica e tecnologica
dell’energia inerente alla fusione, e aprire cosi`la via al suo
sfruttamento industriale e commerciale. Coprodotto da 34
paesi, ITER sarà il più grande reattore di fusione al mondo.
Questa energia nucleare presenta un certo numero di vantaggi,
sopratutto in termini di sicurezza e rispetto dell’ambiente. La
visite guidata del cantiere, associata ad una presentazione
pedagogica ti permetterà di prendere coscienza
dell’ambizione del progetto e dello stato dei lavori in corso.

The Verdon – a romantic oasis
Gréoux-les-Bains, a Provençal village with character,
qualified by Jean Giono as “the Verdon’s romantic oasis”,
is the third spa resort in France. It has been famous for the
benefits of its waters since ancient times. You can still see
a number of traces of its past: its castle and medieval
ramparts, little squares, vaulted passageways, wash-houses,
fountains, church and colourful houses. From March to
December, many events are organized to make your stay as
pleasant as possible (Les Soirées du Château, la Foire aux
santons, le Verdon des Collines, etc.). There are markets all
year round in the resort, and more intensely in season:
Traditional and Provencal markets - 2 or 3 times a week:
Big Provencal market; local producers’ market; “marchés
aux saveurs” (Flavours) and “artisans sans vitrine” (arts and
crafts); night markets: every Friday in July and August.
L’oasi romantica del Verdon
Caratteristico borgo provenzale, qualificato da Jean Giono
come “oasi romantica del Verdon”, Gréoux-les-Bains è la
terza stazione termale francese, rinomata sin dall’antichità
per i benefici delle sue acque. Della sua storia, ha conservato
numerose impronte: il castello e le mura di cinta medioevali,
le piazzette, le vie strette, i passaggi pedonali coperti da volte,
i lavatoi pubblici, la chiesa e le case dalle facciate colorate.
Da marzo a dicembre, sono organizzate numerose manifestazioni
per rendere piacevole il tuo soggiorno (Le Serate al Castello, la
Fiera del presepe, Il Verdon delle Colline...). Tutto l’anno e più
intensamente d'estate, i tradizionali mercatini provenzali sono
disposti 2 o 3 volte a settimana nella stazione termale: Grande
mercato provenzale; Mercato di produttori locali; “Marchés
aux saveurs” (mercatini dei sapori) et “Artisans sans vitrine”
(artigiani senza vetrina); Mercatino notturno: ogni venerdì a
luglio ed agosto.

A gateway to the Verdon Natural Regional Park
Vinon-Sur-Verdon offers visitors a typically Provencal
atmosphere and a welcome filled with smiles and good
humour. Everything is done to help tourists spend the
summer in peace, doing their favourite sports: fishing,
gliding, pétanque, canoeing and mountain-biking. On top of
all this, the many festivals throughout the year, the colours,
fragrances and flavours of the Sunday markets on the main

The aerodrome of Vinon sur Verdon is a very dynamic sports
place which includes several associative clubs. It provides
you with several trainings : glying school, glider, aeronautical
initiation, flights of discovery, first and night flights.
