We have designed our exams to motivate
students of all levels and ages, giving them a
series of realistic goals and tangible rewards
for their achievements.

We started holding music exams 120 years
ago, and since then have been providing music
students with assessments of an exceptionally
high standard, with recognised international
value. Our exams challenge young learners
to go further in their musical education, and
teach them the value of artistic achievement.

Who are our exams for?
A chi si rivolgono i nostri esami?
ABRSM graded music exams are open to
musicians of all ages and standards, and
the vast majority of our exam candidates
are children. Many students will start with
the Prep Test and then work through all the
grades from 1 to 8, but we do not impose a set
pattern. A student may begin with the grade
that best suits their ability – and it does not
matter if a grade is ‘missed out’.

dall’ABRSM sono aperti ai musicisti di ogni età e
livello; la grande maggioranza dei nostri candidati è
composta da bambini. Molti studenti cominceranno
dal Test preparatorio per poi progredire dal Livello
1 al Livello 8, ma noi preferiamo non imporre uno
schema fisso. Uno studente può cominciare dal livello
che più si addice alle sue capacità, non importa se ne
salta uno.
What happens in an exam?
Come si svolge un esame?
Practical exams are available in over 35
subjects, and have four sections: set pieces,
scales, sight-reading and aural tests. This
structure gives candidates the opportunity
to demonstrate their skills through prepared
work and musicianship tests. Students may
use a translator in their exam if required.
Gli esami strumentali sono disponibili in oltre 35
materie e si dividono in quattro sezioni: brani tratti
dal programma, scale, lettura a prima vista e test
di ascolto. Questa struttura consente ai candidati di
dimostrare la propria bravura tramite brani preparati

Celebrating achievement
All successful exam candidates receive an ABRSM
certificate to mark their accomplishment. Practical
graded exam candidates also receive a mark form
written by the examiner during the exam. This can be
used to help your child build on their strengths and
target their weaker areas. Both the mark form and the
certificate serve as a permanent celebration of great
achievement.
