Wireless On-Body Communications
Wireless body-centric communications:
multiple antennas on the body
connecting sensors, hard disk and CPU
boards, compact displays)
Involved technological aspects
 Wearable antennas: efficient, compact, low profile, reconfigurable (smart
technology, diversity schemes), wideband or multi-band
 Channel characterization: path loss, delay spread, multi-path effects
 Compact and low-power devices (long-life battery) depending on
standard and frequency allocation (WLAN at 2.4 /5.8 GHz, UWB)

Open problems
 Efficient analysis of EM propagation and radiation in on-body radio links
(biological issue modeling, whole-body numerical modeling)
 Analysis and design of wearable antennas for on-body communications (effects of
body on antenna efficiency and near-field radiation)
 Characterization of wearable antennas for on-body communications (near-field
and efficiency measurements on antennas mounted on a person/phantom)
 Channel characterization (EM propagation modeling) as a function of antenna
position/orientation and body posture/movement
 SAR estimation, EMC issues for devices sharing the same communication
channel
