BALUARDO SANTA CROCE
Il baluardo Santa Croce si situa nell'angolo
nord-occidentale delle mura, tra la porta San Donato e la
piattaforma di San Frediano.
BALUARDO SANTA CROCE
The Santa Croce bastion is situated on the northwest
corner of the walls, between the Porta San Donato gate
and the San Frediano platform.
Ha fianchi rotondi con facce di diversa misura: quella
rivolta verso la piattaforma, infatti, è più lunga rispetto
all'altra. A un livello inferiore si trovano le due piazze di
manovra, mentre ben evidenti sono la casermetta pensile
e il torrione che fu inglobato all'interno della costruzione.
It has rounded flanks and different size faces, the one
looking towards the platform being longer than the other.
At a lower level are the two manoeuvring rooms, and the
raised guardhouse and the tower that was later
incorporated in the construction are well evident.
La forma del baluardo fu influenzata dalla presenza del
primitivo torrione che a sua volta aveva inglobato una
torretta medievale, ancora visibile nei sotterranei.
The shape of the bastion was influenced by the presence
of a primitive tower that had, in turn, incorporated a
medieval turret, still visible in the undergrounds.
I lavori per la costruzione di questo baluardo furono portati
avanti sotto la direzione di Alessandro Resta in due
momenti successivi: tra il 1597 e il 1600 fu innalzata la
porzione orientale, mentre fra il 1625 e il 1642 si portò a
compimento quella occidentale, resa necessaria della
modifica del tracciato delle mura medievali e
dall'avanzamento della porta San Donato.
Reconstruction work on this bastion was performed under
the direction of Alessandro Resta in two subsequent
periods: the eastern portion was erected between 1597
and 1600, while from 1625 and 1642 the western wing
was completed, made necessary by the modification in
the layout of the medieval walls and the advancement of
the San Donato gate.
