Solo 10 anni fa Noto era ben diversa, ad occhi ancora socchiusi affermava un diverso volgere delle cose; come
dopo un letargo, aveva già perso la vecchia pelle e scoprendo la nuova, tenera e mielata, schiudeva le braccia e
gli occhi ad un nuovo futuro. E’ in questo contesto di cose che affiora la necessità della compagine artistica
contemporanea presente in Città ma ancora priva di significative opportunità per presentarsi al pubblico, di
trovare una vetrina che testimoniasse dei propri percorsi. Terreno fertile per il Progetto NotArte: un festival
delle Arti intese in senso lato, senza troppi paletti che condizionino la capacità di espressione di ciascun artista
nelle varie discipline pittoriche, scultoree, teatrali, musicali, di danza e poesia, sempre con un occhio attento ai
new media e agli artisti emergenti, spesso accostando percorsi differenti.
Vincenzo Medica che tutt’ oggi cura la direzione del Festival, nel 2003 tenta, insieme all’ artista Mario
Zuppardo, un’ esperimento nuovo, quello di creare un’ evento ciclico cadenzato da un tema unificatore, un
appuntamento esclusivo che rappresenti un valore aggiunto all’ estate netina e che possa coinvolgere un
numero sempre maggiore di partecipanti, tra artisti e avventori. Dopo varie ipotesi si pensò di colmare d’ arte
in piena estate la strada emblema del fascino della Città, riconosciuta anche grazie all’ Infiorata, come la
Strada degli Artisti: la via Nicolaci. Si attestarono sin da subito notevoli consensi, con la partecipazione di più di
30 artisti alla prima edizione del Festival, senza nessuna certezza che ce ne sarebbero state delle altre.
Oggi NotArte presenta ancora una volta la propria miscela di corpi, ombre, quadri, teste scolpite, suoni,
paesaggi, danze che, alla morbida luce del tramonto, si muovono sfumando il potente contrasto tra la pietra
d’ oro e il grigio selciato della strada, dando vita, a quello spettacolo serale sempre più ricco e colorato, atteso
dagli artisti per conoscersi e confrontarsi, dai netini e dai turisti come esibizione alla quale partecipare, tramite
anche i singolari eventi collaterali che il NotArte festival prevede, oppure semplicemente seduti, durante una
tiepida notte d’ agosto, su morbidi cuscini a nutrirsi di bellezza.
NotArte, oggi al suo primo decennio, con molti degli artisti fondatori ancora presenti e talvolta con il supporto di
critici e curatori esterni, mantiene intatto l’ obiettivo di essere uno spazio aperto e da vivere, nella semplicità
degli allestimenti, percepito non solo come area espositiva di qualità ma laboratorio di idee e progetti,
un’ occasione festosa per presentare la propria Arte o Not-Arte: spesso dissociata da canoni di casta, stili,
mode e tendenze, libera espressione delle passioni che mantengono caldo e vivo il suggestivo Sud-Est siciliano.

Only10 years ago Noto was a very different place but with its eyes still half open it chose different turn of
events, just like after a period of hibernation, it had already lost its old skin and discovering its new skin, tender
and sweet like honey, it opened up its eyes and arms to a new future.
It is within this context that the city’ s contemporary art group’ s need emerged, but they still had no
meaningful opportunity to present themselves to the public, to find a showcase that would witness each
individual journey.
This was the fertile ground for the NotArte Project: an Arts Festival in the broadest sense, without too many
goalposts that would condition each artist’ s expressive ability in the various disciplines i.e., painting,
sculpture, theater, music, dance and poetry. Always on the lookout for new emerging artists and medium, often
bringing together different styles.
Today Vincenzo Medica still manages the Arts Festival. In 2003, together with the artist Mario Zuppardo, he
attempted something new; to create a regular event marked by a unifying theme, an exclusive summer event
that offered Noto an added value, that could involve an increasing number of participants, between artists and
regular customers.
After several proposals, the idea was to fill Nicolaci Road with art, this road which has become the emblem of
the city’ s charm in midsummer, now also recognized, thanks to the Flower Festival, as the Artist’ s Road. It
was approved right from the beginning with the participation of more than 30 artists in the first edition of the
Festival, with no certainty that it would ever happen again.
Once again NotArte today presents its own mixture of bodies, shades, paintings, sculpted heads, sounds,
landscapes and dances in the soft light of the sunset, that move, reducing the powerful contrast between the
golden stone and the gray paving of the road, giving ever more life to the rich and colorful evening spectacle,
looked forward to by the artists who meet and compare their work, by the people of Noto and by the tourists as
an exhibition to take part in or they can attend some of the unique fringe events that NotArte Festival also has
on offer, or just sit on soft cushions on a warm August night and soak in the beauty.
NotArte, now in its first decade, with many of the founding artists still present and often with the support of
critics and outside curators, retains its goal of being an open space to be lived, of being a simple setting, which
is perceived not only as an excellent exhibition area but as a laboratory of ideas and projects, a cheerful and
free opportunity to present one’ s own Art or Not-Art: free from clique rules, styles, fashions and trends, a free
expression of the passions that keep the evocative South-Eastern Sicilian warm and alive.
