OBJECTIVES OF THE COURSE: The course is an introduction to linear algebra and its techniques and
algorithms, and in linear geometry, too. Its purposes are to preparate the students to study and to
solve systems of linear equations, to use vector calculus and linear systems for the applications,
and to solve problems of geometry in the Euclidean plane and space.
COURSE CONTENTS:
LINEAR ALGEBRA – Sets. Functions. Operations. Numerical vectors, Matrices. Geometrical
vectors and thier internal/external operations. Linear systems: resolutions with the steps reduction
method. Vector spaces over a field. Vector subspaces. Systems of linearly dependent and
independent vectors. Spanning sets of vectors. Finitely generated vector spaces. Basis and

The course provides the basis for tackling the study of problems in Mechanics of Solids and Structures

Introductory vector calculus and tensor algebra: Base vectors and components. Vector operations. Vector spaces and subspaces.
Dyadic product. Tensors and matrices. Matrix form of a tensor. Tensor and matrix operations. Composition of tensors.
Change of basis and component transformation. Characteristic polynomial and invariants of a tensor. Eigenvalues and
eigenvectors. Intrinsic and indicial notations. Scalar, vector and tensor fields. Gradient and divergence. Gradient of a vector
field. The divergence theorem and Gauss-Green formulas.
Introductory statics and kinematics: Forces, couples and moments. Mathematical representation. The physical significance of a
moment. Resultant force and resultant moment. Tips on calculating moments. Equilibrium. 2D force systems. Statically

heat transfer in its methodological aspects and applications.

COURSE CONTENTS: Introduction, dimensions and units. Closed systems:
First and second law of thermodynamics, reversible and irreversible processes.
Thermodynamic pressure and thermodynamic temperature; entropy measurability
and Gibbs laws; consequences of the second law. Properties of pure substances:
Phase change processes of pure substances; property diagrams and tables; specific
heat and elastic coefficients; Models for pure substances: ideal-gas and liquid
model; Mollier diagram. Control Volumes: Mass conservation; First and second
law of thermodynamics for control volumes; mechanical energy equation.
Thermodynamic analysis of: ducts; heat exchangers; hydraulic turbines; steam and
gas turbines; pumps; and compressors. Elements of heat transfer: Heat transfer
modes: Conduction, convection, and radiation. General heat conduction equation,
boundary conditions, steady-state solutions for: flat plate and cylinders. Series and
parallel thermal resistances, critical insulation radius; Unsteady heat conduction in
flat plates and cylinders. Radiation: black body, radiative properties of surfaces,
emission, reflection, adsorption and transmission, grey surfaces, radiative heat
transfer between grey surfaces, configuration factors. Convection: fluid-dynamic
and thermal boundary layer, natural and forced convection, non-dimensional
numbers: Nusselt, Reynolds and Prandtl. Combined heat transfer mechanisms.

The course aims to provide to the students the logical tools useful to interpret the behavior of the
economic system with particular reference to the system of the firms, as well as to provide the theoretical
and methodological tools for estimating the value of goods and resources.
COURSE CONTENTS:
Introduction to events, activities, systems and actors of the economic system. Markets and prices, the
mechanisms of interaction between supply and demand and the market arrangements. The circuit of
creation and distribution of value. The concept of enterprise and entrepreneur. Definition and
classification of companies. The resources and expertise.
The functional areas of business: the typical business cycle functions (purchasing, production, sales), and
additional support functions (Marketing, R & D, logistic organization, financing, control and planning,
business information system). Business management, economics and financial strategies and corporate
policies. The value chain and value system.
The different types of costs and revenues. Systems analysis of the costs involved: direct costing and
analysis costs-volumes-revenue.
The fundamentals of the estimative discipline; the framework and the main criteria of estimation:
comparison with market prices, valuation, financial income, costs of production, costs of substitution,
value addition, value transformation. Civil estimation. The economic evaluation of projects.
