IUMA MANAGEMENT Alessandro Calamai PROUDLY INTRODUCES BASS/BARITONE ALESSANDRO CALAMAI Italian bass baritone Alessandro Calamai graduated from the L. Cherubini Music Conservatory of Florence as a pupil of A. Desderi. He later perfected his craft with E. Schwarzkopf, A. Dermota, M.Tonelli and R. Capecchi. He has won many vocal competitions, among them the As.Li.Co. (Milan) in 1986 and the M. Battistini Competition (Rieti) in 1987, resulting in his debut as Marcello and Schaunard in LA BOHEME. (Puccini) In 1988 he debuted the roles of: Paolo in SIMON BOCCANEGRA (Verdi) and Sharpless in MADAMA BUTTERFLY (Puccini) in Rome and Rieti, roles that has continued to sing on a regular basis. Having a great interest in the music of the 18th century, he has frequently performed roles such as Conte Robinson in IL MATRIMONIO SEGRETO (Cimarosa) – which he debuted in Cosenza - and Uberto in LA SERVA PADRONA (Pergolesi) in Florence during the 1989-90 season. Highlights of Alessandro's career include performances in 1991 of Sharpless at the Rendano Theatre in Cosenza. The following year he performed two important Donizetti roles, Dulcamara in L'ELISIR D'AMORE and Don Pasquale in DON PASQUALE at the Teatro Sociale di Mantova. In 1993, he debuted the role of Poliziotto in LADY MACBETH (Shostakovich) at the Teatro Comunale of Florence under the direction of Semyon Bychkov. This production was revived in the spring of 1998. In Pisa, the following year he sang the role of the Pilot in IL PICCOLO PRINCIPE (Vavolo). In 1996, he took part in a production of LA SERVA PADRONA that toured throughout Italy and Spain performing in cities such as Reggio Emilia, Verona and Arezzo and Aviles, Pontevedra, Vigo, Orense and Santander. In 1997, important performances include IL TRACCOLLO (Pergolesi) in Catania, Florence and Angouleme and Gasparo in RITA (Donizetti) in Venice. ! Pagina 2 ALESSANDRO CALAMAI That same year he took part in the production of L'ORFEO (Monteverdi) conducted by Rene’ Jacobs and directed by Luca Ronconi, and the next year included performances of Charpentier’s TE DEUM, both at the Teatro Comunale of Florence. He also sang in a gala concert in Shanghai, sponsored by the Arena di Verona Foundation and performed the role of Manasse in DIE BRAUTWAHL (Busoni) in Empoli. Performances in subsequent years include the roles of IL MAESTRO DI CAPPELLA, Nardo in IL FILOSOFO DI CAMPAGNA (Galuppi), Bogdanovich in THE MERRY WIDOW (Lehar) at the Arena di Verona, IL TRACCOLLO, as well as the roles of Nerbulone and Tiferne in ELIOGABALO (Cavalli) and Conte Robinson in IL MATRIMONIO SEGRETO. In March 2000 he sang the role of Bellarosa in I VIRTUOSI AMBULANTI (Fioravanti) in Sassari, and that summer he performed in the first Festival Costa Azahar in Castillon (Spain) in the role of Mustafa’ in L'ITALIANA IN ALGERI (Rossini). In 2001 he debuted the role of Bartolo in IL BARBIERE DI SIVIGLIA (Rossini) in the city of Ferrara and in 2002, Morales in CARMEN (Bizet) at the Arena di Verona, conducted by A. Lombard and directed by F. Zeffirelli. In 2003, he sang IL MAESTRO DI CAPPELLA (Cimarosa) in Parma and Teramo, IL BARBIERE DI SIVIGLIA, conducted by F. La Vecchia, and once again at the Arena di Verona in LA TRAVIATA, conducted by D. Renzetti and directed by P. Panizza. PETITE MESSE SOLENNELLE (Rossini) in La Spezia. During the winter season he returned to the Teatro del Maggio Musicale Fiorentino in Rigoletto conducted by Luisi, directed by Graham Vick; in the summer 2004, he again worked with Vick in the Arena di Verona in LA TRAVIATA (Barone Douphol, conducted by D. Callegari). He returned to Verona the following summer to sing in LA GIOCONDA, directed by Pizzi. ! Pagina 3 ALESSANDRO CALAMAI Among his 2005 engagements are MADAMA BUTTERFLY at the Teatro del Giglio of Lucca and Regio of Parma, TOSCA and LA TRAVIATA at the Teatro Comunale of Florence. In 2006, he debuted the role of Leporello in DON GIOVANNI (Mozart) in Arezzo, Il Maestro di Cappella (Cimarosa) in Udine Belluno Linz and Bad Kreuznach. He was also Bass Soloist in Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony at the Basilica of Santa Croce in Florence. Recent participations include LE NOZZE DI FIGARO, LA TRAVIATA and IL BARBIERE DI SIVIGLIA in Rome for The Arts Academy and IL MAESTRO DI SCUOLA (Telemann) at the Teatro Sociale of Rovigo as well as Don Magnifico in LA CENERENTOLA at the Accademia di S.Cecilia of Rome in 2007. Among future engagements are PRIMA LA MUSICA POI LE PAROLE (Salieri) in Cremona, L’ITALIANA IN ALGERI in Brescia, and IL BARBIERE DI SIVIGLIA (Don Bartolo) in Aviles, ŒDIPUS REX, (Stravinskij) in Rome. Alessandro Calamai has made numerous recordings, among which IL FILOSOFO DI CAMPAGNA, I VIRTUOSI AMBULANTI, Il CONTE POLICRONIO, LA ROMANZIERA E L’UOMO NERO, IL DIVERTIMENTO DEI NUMI and TRACCOLLO for the Bongiovanni label. For the Philips label, he recorded the role of the Sagrestano in TOSCA conducted by Seiji Ozawa, and took part in the recording of LA TRAVIATA conducted by Zubin Mehta. He also recorded DIE BRAUTWAHL (Busoni), LA CONTADINA ASTUTA (Pergolesi-Hasse) and the REQUIEM MASS by G. B. Girolami for the Kicco Classic label and ELIOGABALO (Cavalli) for Ducale. !
