Course Description: The purpose of this course is to provide students with a sound basis for
communicating effectively and accurately in Italian. Emphasis is on the fundamentals of
listening, speaking, reading and writing. “Real life” activities will expose students to day-to-day
contexts likely to be encountered in Italy, thus reinforcing grammatical structured learning in
class and increasing functional skills. Student will also be introduced to contemporary Italian
life and culture. Class will be conducted entirely in Italian.
Goals & Learning Objectives: Italian XL 1 will cover Chapter 1-5. Conversational vocabulary,
idiomatic expressions, adjectives, prepositions, and the present tense of regular and irregular
verbs are emphasized.
Required Text: Avanti! Beginning Italian by Janice M. Aski and Diane Musumeci, Second
Edition. ISBN: 9780073386249
