Approaching to Italian culture through the movie MEDITERRANEO
Mediterraneo is an Italian film that won the Academy Award for Best
Foreign Language Film in 1991. The film is set during World War II, and
regards a group of Italian soldiers who become stranded on a Greek island
and are left behind by the war. The filming took place on the island of
Kastellórizo
In 1941, one year after Italy joined Germany against the Allies in World War
II, a small group of misfit Italian soldiers is sent to a small Greek island in the
Aegean Sea for four months of lookout duty. The soldiers include a
lieutenant who likes art, a macho sergeant, a farmer accompanied by his
beloved donkey Silvana, and other quirky people. They are not very good
soldiers, but a cross section of average, independent men.
The soldiers anticipate attack from outside and on the island and take all
sorts of inept precautions. They find a small town with no people. They see
bombing on the horizon and realize that the ship that would pick them up
has been destroyed. Then mysteriously, people reappear in the village: the
villagers say they hid because the Germans had taken all the men. They
have decided to accommodate the Italians. It isn't long before everyone's
sunny nature appears. The Italian soldiers are absorbed into the life, heat and landscape of the idyllic island.
The local orthodox priest asks the lieutenant, a Sunday painter, to restore the murals in his church. Two soldiers, who
are brothers, befriend a lovely young woman, a shepherdess, who believes that three is the perfect number for an
affair of pure sexual fun. The sergeant takes up folk dancing and the shyest of the soldiers falls profoundly in love with
the island's single, very overworked prostitute, named Vassilissa.

A LITTLE STORY TO SUMMARIZE WHAT WE HAVE LEARNT TODAY
A Pierino piace…
Oggi pomeriggio la Mamma è al lavoro.
Dopo la scuola, Pierino e la sorella vanno a casa di Sara. Prima fanno i compiti; li finiscono
velocemente, così possono approfittare del tempo libero.
Sara chiede a Pierino: “Di solito, cosa fai nel tempo libero?”.
Pierino dice: “Quando sono a casa mi piace giocare con i videogiochi. Oppure, se fa bello, adoro
giocare con la palla in giardino: calcio, pallavolo…mi piace tutto! E tu, cosa fai di solito?”.
Sara risponde: “I videogiochi, non mi piacciono; mi piace di più giocare con le bambole”.
“Sì…anche a me piacciono le bambole!”, dice la sorella di Pierino.
“Nooo.. Che noia le bambole, giochiamo a palla!”, dice Pierino.
“Va bene”, dice Sara. “Allora, giochiamo a pallavolo?”.
“Sì!”, rispondono Pierino e la sorella.
Dopo un po’, arriva la mamma di Sara, e dice: “Nooo…mi avete schiacciato tutti i fiori in giardino!
Vi piace la musica?”
I tre bambini rispondono, “Sì!!!”.
Allora, la mamma di Sara dice: “Sara, ha una chitarra. Vi piace suonare la chitarra?”.
La sorella di Pierino dice: “Certo, che bello! Io e Pierino abbiamo cominciato un corso di chitarra. A
me piace tantissimo!”.
“Anche a me!”, dice Sara. “Vado a prendere la chitarra, così suoniamo qualcosa…”.
“E a te, Pierino, ti piace suonare?”, chiede la mamma di Sara.
Pierino dice: “Sì, non vedo l’ora di ricevere la mia chitarra nuova. Però vorrei imparare anche a
suonare il basso…”.
La sera la mamma viene a prendere Pierino e la sorella, e chiede alla mamma di Sara: “Com’è
andata? Hanno fatto i bravi?”.
La mamma di Sara risponde: “Si, hanno fatto tutti i compiti e hanno suonato la chitarra. Sono
bravissimi! Però, mi hanno distrutto tutti i fiori in giardino!”.
“Noo..che pesti! Come avete fatto?”
“Volevamo giocare a pallavolo…”, rispondono i tre bambini.

This afternoon the Mum is at work. After school, Pierino and his sister goes to Sara’s house. They
start doing their homework, they finish them quickly, so that they can enjoy their free time.
Sara asks Pierino: “What do you usually do in your free time?”. Pierino replies: “When I’m at home
I like playing video games. Or, if there is a beautiful wheather, I love playing with the ball in the
garden, soccer, volley ball...I like everything! And you, what do you usually like doing?”.
Sara answers: “I don’t like video games, I like playing with dolls..”. “Yes! I like playing with dolls as
well!”, says Pierino’s sister. “Noo..dolls are boring! Let’s play with the ball!”, replies Pierino. “All
right”, says Sara. “What about volley ball?”. “Yes!”, answer Pierino and his sister.
After a while, Sara’s mum arrives and says: “Nooo..you are squashing all my flowers in the garden!
Do you like music?”. The three kids say: “Yes!!!”. So, Sara’s mum says: “Sara has a guitar. Do you
like playing the guitar?”.
Pierino’s sister says: “Sure, it’s great! Me and Pierino have just started a guitar course. I like it so
much!”. “I like it very much as well!”, says Sara. “I’ll get my guitar, so that we can play
something…”. “And you, Pierino, do you like playing the guitar?”, asks Sara’s mum. Pierino says:
“Yes, I can’t wait to have my new guitar. But, I would also like to learn how to play the bass”.
The evening, the Mum comes to pick up Pierino and his sister. She asks to Sara’s mum: “How was
it? Did they behave well?”. Sara’s mum replies: “ Yes, they did all their homework, and they played
the guitar. They are very good! But, they’ve squashed all my flowers in the garden!”. “Noo…you,
little pests! How did you do this?”. “We just wanted to play volley ball…”, the three kids answer.
