Message from the Consul General
Messaggio del Presidente
Carissimi Connazionali,
Con l'inizio del 2013 desidero rivolgere a tutti Voi e ai Vostri
cari un rinnovato caloroso augurio di pace e serenita'. Il
2012 e' stato un anno di cambiamenti e di interessanti
innovazioni. Il nostro ex ambasciatore, Giulio Terzi di
Sant'Agata, e' stato nominato Ministro degli Affari Esteri e
ha immediatamente dimostrato forte impegno italiano nella
sfida di rafforzare sicurezza, giustizia, sviluppo e
cooperazione con i paesi esteri.
All'Ambasciata Italiana di Washington D.C. e' subentrato al
Ministro Terzi di Sant’Agata il diplomatico Claudio
Bisogniero.
Al Consolato Generale d’Italia di San Francisco l'inizio del
mese di settembre ha visto due nuovi arrivi: il console
generale d'Italia, dr. Mauro Battocchi, che ha apportato
nuove e moderne energie nella giurisdizione consolare e la
dott.ssa Paola Ebranati a capo dell'ufficio scuola.
Contemporaneamente al console Battocchi e alla dott.ssa
Ebranati, l'Istituto Italiano di Cultura ha avuto un nuovo
direttore nella persona del dr. Paolo Barlera, il cui obiettivo
e' di apportare nuove prolifiche relazioni alle istituzioni
Italo-Americane sulle tradizioni multiculturali italiane.
Il COM.IT.ES di San Francisco si e' reso immediatamente e
ampiamente disponibile nel collaborare con le nuove
autorita' e di conseguenza ha continuato a lavorare in
sintonia con varie associazioni Italo-Americane e con alcune
istituzioni locali, portando avanti studio, programmazione,
realizzazione e divulgazione informativa dei molteplici
eventi che rispecchiano la passione e l'amore nel voler
tener alto il prestigio della nostra bella Italia.
Il Ministero degli Esteri, l’Alto Patronato del Presidente della
Repubblica Italiana, Giorgio Napolitano, e l'Ambasciata
Italiana di Washington D.C. hanno dichiarato il “2013 :
Anno della Cultura Italiana negli Stati Uniti" e anche
per questo grande evento, come gia' per le celebrazioni del
150.mo anniversario dell'Unita' d'Italia, e' stato creato il
logo – qui sotto riportato - che continuera' ad essere
utilizzato durante tutti gli eventi programmati per il 2013.

2013 Year of Italian Culture in the US:
A Great Opportunity to Renew Italian Pride in the US
Dear Italian and Italian-American friends,
As you all know, the Italian Government has declared 2013 as the
Year of Italian Culture in the United States. This is a fantastic
opportunity to present Italian culture to the American public not only
in its traditional form of historical and artistic legacy, but as a dynamic
asset that Italians and Italian-Americans can leverage to promote
economic and technological ties between Italy and the US, as well to
renew Italian pride within the Italian-American community in the US at
large.
Italian culture and identity that have distinguished the Italian tradition
over the centuries will be showcased: art, music, theater, landscaping
and architectural heritage, cinema, literature and language. At the
same time, efforts will be also focused on the aspects of Italian
contemporary life that are relevant to modern global life: design,
fashion, food culture, modern education, sports, sustainability,
technology and innovation.
Our goal is creating an enhanced perception of Italy, not only as a
tourist destination, but also as a reliable business partner, an
attractive location for foreign investment. Italians and Italian
Americans can be the protagonists of this “rebranding” of Italy in the
US, which can make it all the more attractive to the new generations
of Americans.
The Italian Consulate General has identified different sources of
funding aimed at mobilizing resources around the vision outlined
above. One of them is the “Italian Pride Capital Campaign”. This is
meant to develop a fund that will be issuing yearly grants to San
Francisco Bay area institutions that have excelled at promoting Italian
culture and supporting Italian-Americans. The campaign will last four
years. Major cultural, educational and charity institutions within the
Italian American Community will be the recipient of funds. In 2013,
these will be Italian Community Services, Piccola Scuola Italiana di San
Francisco, the Museo Italo-Americano, and the training of Italian-AP
teachers. Funds will be channeled to the recipients by COMITES, so
that donations will be tax-deductible, as allowed by US Laws. Soon
the COMITES website will be ready to accept your donations.
My appeal to you, dear Italian and Italian-American friends, is:
Help us Renew Italian Pride! Donate for Italian culture. Even 5
dollars matter!

Giorgio Napolitano in un suo messaggio – “vuole
rappresentare un atto di impegno per l'ulteriore rafforzamento
dell'antica e solida amicizia esistente tra i nostri due Paesi.

At the beginning of 2013 once again I send you and your families greetings
and warmest wishes of peace and serenity. 2012 has been a year of
changes and of interesting innovations. Our former Ambassador, Giulio
Terzi di Sant’Agata, has been appointed Italian Minister of Foreign Affairs.
Soon after coming into office he has shown a strong dedication on behalf of
the Italians to the challenging task of strengthening the safety, fairness,
development and coordination of ties with countries outside of Italy.
Message from the President
L’iniziativa suscita grande interesse negli Stati Uniti, come
testimoniato dal riconoscimento giunto dal Presidente
Obama con la Proclamation del Colombus Day, per l’Anno
italiano che “Americans will join in celebrating”, e dalle
calorose dichiarazioni del Segretario di Stato Clinton in
occasione del suo ultimo incontro a Washington con il Ministro
Terzi: “Il meglio dell’Italia, che è davvero tanto – ha affermato
Hillary Clinton – sarà in mostra per il pubblico americano.
Sono contenta del fatto che ciò rafforzerà la nostra stretta
relazione: arte, musica, buona cucina: siamo molto entusiasti
che l’Anno cominci”.

L’iniziativa si articolerà in più di 180 eventi in oltre 40 città
americane.
As always, the San Francisco COM.IT.ES has made itself amply available to
work in cooperation with the new authorities. In that spirit it has continued
to work alongside various Italian-American associations, as well as some
local institutions, promoting the study, planning, realization and diffusion of
the many events reflecting our love and passion to uphold the prestige of
our beautiful Country.
Il primo grande evento nella circoscrizione consolare di San
Francisco ha avuto luogo il 12 dicembre 2012 presso la City
Hall di San Francisco durante il quale il sindaco di San
Francisco, Edwin Lee, Angela Alioto e il console generale
d'Italia, Mauro Battocchi, hanno proclamato pubblicamente
il “2013:Anno della Cultura Italiana negli Stati Uniti.”
Erano presenti alla commovente cerimonia anche i
presidenti di 22 associazioni italo-americane della Bay Area
unitamente ad altri leader italiani a San Francisco e della
Silicon Valley che all’uscita,hanno potuto ammirare la City
Hall completamente illuminata dei colori della bandiera
italiana.
In contemporanea si e' svolta la conferenza stampa e il
Gala presso la National Gallery of Art di Washington D.C.
con l'esposizione del celebre David-Apollo di Michelangelo
alla presenza del Ministro degli Affari Esteri, Giulio Terzi di
Sant'Agata e dell'ambasciatore, Claudio Bisogniero.

Legion of Honor, San Fancisco, in prestito dall’Italia - in
primavera.
"Bella Figura," una rassegna dei migliori prodotti made in
italy presso il Consolato Generale d’Italia di San Francisco
in maggio.
"Reggio Children" (un aiuto all’istruzione) in maggio una
mostra degli studenti di S.F. - La Scuola e in giugno un
gruppo di lavoro con docenti da Reggio Emilia, all’Istituto
At the Italian Consulate General of San Francisco, at the start of
September there were two new arrivals: the Italian Consul General, Dr.
Mauro Battocchi, who has infused new and modern energy into the
Consular jurisdiction, and Dr. Paola Ebranati, new Director of the School
Office. Also at the time of the arrival of Dr. Battocchi and Dr. Ebranati, Dr.
Paolo Barlera has been appointed new Director of the Istituto Italiano di
Cultura; his goal is to implement prolific new connections with ItalianAmerican institutions, focusing on Italy’s multicultural traditions.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Alto Patronato of Italian President
Giorgio Napolitano and the Italian Embassy in Washington D.C. have
declared 2013 Anno della Cultura Italiana negli Stati Uniti – The Year
of Italian Culture in the United States. For this event also, as it was for the
celebration of the 150th Anniversary of the Unification of Italy, was created
a logo – shown here – that will be used for all the events planned for 2013.
President Napolitano expressed in his message: “L’Anno della Cultura
Italiana negli Stati Uniti represents our commitment to strengthening the
long-standing and solid friendship that exists between our two Countries.”
Minister Terzi di Sant’Agata reminded us: “No growth is possible without
culture, and prosperity is possible only if deeply rooted in a common
ground of values and history. The tie between the U.S. and Italy is made
stronger by the energy and the dedication of generations of Italians who
arrived in America.”
Ambassador Claudio Bisogniero commented: “The Year of Italian
Culture will involve all institutional, cultural, economic and productive
aspects of “sistema Italia.” Such an approach will help mobilize resources,
generate projects and create an impact that will be more sustained and
more far-reaching into the future.”
The initiative has found great interest among the American public, as
shown by President Obama’s Proclamation of Columbus Day, with his
statement that the Americans will join in celebrating the Anno della Cultura
Italiana. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, during her most recent
meeting with Minister Terzi di Sant’Agata, stated: “The best of Italy –
which is truly vast – will be on display for the American people. I am happy
that this will reinforce our close relationship: art, music, cuisine, we are all
very excited.”
The initiative will unfold with more than 180 events in over 40 American
cities.
The first great event in the San Francisco Consular Jurisdiction took place
on December 12, 2012 at San Francisco City Hall, when San Francisco
Italiano di Cultura di San Francisco.

Le riunioni dei consiglieri COM.IT.ES hanno avuto luogo
rispettivamente il 13 febbraio, il 12 giugno e il 25
settembre 2012.
Il vice presidente, Carlo Mannocci, ha presenziato alla
riunione dell'Intercomites tenutasi a Newark (New Jersey) il
17 marzo 2012. Durante tale incontro si sono discussi i
rapporti fra i Comites, i Parlamentari, il CGIE e i Consolati.
Inoltre, il vice presidente, Carlo Mannocci, si e' reso
disponibile ed ha accettato la delega di rappresentanza da
parte del presidente nel presiedere all'annuale riunione
convocata dall'Ambasciata di Washington il 13 ottobre
2012.
Il 4 novembre 2012, il presidente del COM.IT.ES, Romana
Bracco, nella sua carica di chairman of the Board ha
organizzato la celebrazione del 96.mo anno di servizio
dell'associazione Italian Community Service che ha onorato
BAIA (Business Association Italy America) al ricevimento
tenutosi al Ritz Carlton Hotel in San Francisco.
Mayor Edwin Lee, Angela Alioto and Consul General Mauro Battocchi
officially proclaimed 2013 as The Year of Italian Culture. At this stirring
ceremony participated also the presidents of 22 Italian-American
associations from all over the Bay Area, as well as other Italian leaders of
San Francisco and Silicon Valley. City Hall was a sight of admiration,
entirely lit up with the colors of the Italian flag.
At the same time there was also a press conference and a Gala at the
Italian Embassy in Washington D.C., where Michelangelo’s celebrated
David-Apollo was unveiled in the presence of Minister Terzi di Sant’Agata
and Ambassador Bisogniero.

at the Legion of Honor in San Francisco on loan from Italy sometime in
spring.
"Bella Figura," a show of the best products of Made in Italy brands, at
the Italian Consulate in San Francisco in May.
"Reggio Children" and Sustainable Education, including a May
exhibition by the students of S.F.-based La Scuola and a June
workshop with educators from Reggio Emilia, at the Italian Cultural
Institute in San Francisco.

Bracco, ha voluto sponsorizzare generosamente la rassegna
cinematografica del N.I.C.E. (New Italian Film Festival) alla
sua sedicesima edizione che ha avuto luogo a San Francisco
dal'11 al 18 novembre.

comitato"Sister Cities", si e' prodigata nell'organizzare
:"Una Cena splendida per l'Emilia-Romagna", tenutasi
presso il ristorante Acquerello di San Francisco il 26
novembre 2012. Tale raccolta fondi per la ricostruzione
della storica cattedrale di San Francesco del comune di
Mirandola ha visto la partecipazione di prominenti autorita'
come il sindaco di San Francisco, Edwin Lee che ha
dichiarato il 26 novembre il "San Francisco-Mirandola
Friendship Day”, il console generale d'Italia, Mauro
Battocchi, Angela Alioto Richard Armanino (Italfoods) e
Charlotte Swig, capo protocollo.
Come di consueto anche per l'anno 2011 sono state inviate
numerose informazioni ai connazionali in merito a borse di
studio da diverse universita’ italiane e borse di studio
emesse da associazioni italo-americane, concorsi fotografici
per testimonianze migratorie, corsi di laurea online in
lingua e cultura italiana, conferenze ricercatori italiani nel
mondo nei vari campi di ricerca, nuove disposizioni INPS
(Istituto Nazionale Previdenza Sociale) pervenute dai
Patronati,
messaggi
pervenuti
dall'Ambasciata
di
Washington, eventi culturali organizzati dalle varie
associazioni italo-americane, assistenza agli italiani in cerca
di informazioni locali.
ELEZIONI POLITICHE 2013
Nel corso del 2013 si svolgeranno le elezioni per il rinnovo
del Parlamento Italiano, che vedranno protagonisti anche i
cittadini italiani residenti all'estero chiamati ad eleggere i
propri rappresentanti alla Camera dei Deputati e al Senato
"Italy of the Future," an exhibition of Italy's National Research Center
showcasing the best of Italy in technology and innovation, at the Italian
Cultural Institute in San Francisco in July.
"Verdi's Requiem" at the San Francisco Opera, marking Giuseppe
Verdi's bicentennial with a special performance on Oct. 25.
"New Italian Cinema" film festival at the Embarcadero Center's
Landmark Theatre in San Francisco in November.

The COM.IT.ES meetings took place on February 13, June 12 and
September 25, 2012. Vice President Carlo Mannocci presided to the
Intercomites meeting in Newark, N.J. on March 17, 2012. During the
meeting were discussed the relationship among the various COM.IT.ES, the
Italian Parliament, the CGIE and the Consulates. Mr. Mannocci also made
himself available to represent by proxy the president at the annual meeting
held at the Italian Embassy in Washington D.C. on October 13, 2012.
On November 4, 2012 Romana Bracco, President and Chairman of the
Board of COM.IT.ES, organized the celebrations of the 96th year of the
Association Italian Community Service honoring BAIA (Business Association
Italy America), with a reception held at the Ritz Carlton Hotel in San
Francisco.
Ms. Bracco also generously sponsored the 16th N.I.C.E. (New Italian Film
Festival) that took place in San Francisco from November 11 to November
18.
As a member of the “Sister City” Committee, on November 26, 2012 Ms.
Bracco graciously organized “Una cena splendida per l’Emilia-Romagna” (“A
splendid dinner for Emilia-Romagna”) at the Ristorante Acquerello in San
Francisco. The dinner raised funds for the reconstruction of the historical
cathedral of San Francesco in the town of Mirandola. Among those who
donated funds were the Mayor of San Francisco Edwin Lee, who declared
November 26 “San Francisco-Mirandola Friendship Day,” the Italian Consul
della Repubblica, votando per i candidati che si presentano
nella Circoscrizione estero del Centro e Nord america. Vi

ELEZIONI DEL PARLAMENTO ITALIANO 2013
VOTO ALL’ESTERO PER CORRISPONDENZA
Con Decreto del Presidente della Repubblica n. 226 del 22
dicembre 2012 sono state indette per il 24 e 25 febbraio
2013 le votazioni per l’elezione della Camera dei Deputati
e del Senato della Repubblica.
All’estero, i cittadini italiani ivi stabilmente residenti,
iscritti nelle liste elettorali della Circoscrizione estero,
possono
partecipare
alle
elezioni
votando
per
corrispondenza.
A ciascun elettore residente all’estero, che non abbia
optato per il voto in Italia entro il 3 gennaio, il Consolato
competente invia per posta, entro il 6 febbraio, un plico
contenente le schede elettorali. L’elettore, utilizzando la
busta già affrancata e seguendo attentamente le istruzioni
contenute nel foglio informativo, dovrà spedire SENZA
RITARDO le schede elettorali votate, in modo che
arrivino al proprio Consolato entro - e non oltre - le ore
16 (ora locale) del 21 febbraio.
Il voto è personale e segreto. E’ fatto divieto di
votare più volte e inoltrare schede per conto di altre
persone. Chiunque violi le disposizioni in materia
elettorale, sarà punito a norma di legge.
L’elettore che alla data del 10 febbraio non avesse
ancora ricevuto il plico elettorale, potrà rivolgersi al
proprio Consolato per verificare la propria posizione
elettorale e chiedere eventualmente un duplicato.

Elezioni degli organi di rappresentanza per gli
Italiani all’estero - COM.IT.ES Dato che non ci sono pervenute dal Ministero nuove
disposizioni in merito, ripetiamo quanto gia' segnalato lo
scorso anno.
Le elezioni per i nuovi membri dei COM.IT.ES, previste dal
M.A.E. (Ministero Affari Esteri) entro il marzo 2009 sono
state rinviate. Il Consiglio dei Ministri ha disposto il
differimento dei termini di tali elezioni con Decreto Legge
del 18 dicembre 2008. Il predetto provvedimento dispone
che tali elezioni abbiano ora luogo entro il 31 dicembre
2014. E’ in discussione da tempo un processo di riforma.
Per legge, gli attuali consiglieri possono rimanere in carica
fino al termine del 2014. Durante la riunione del 25
settembre il presidente del Comites, Romana Bracco, e gli
attuali consiglieri hanno confermato in presenza del console
la decisione di voler continuare il loro mandato di
volontariato, che perdura gia’ da parecchi anni, fino alla
data delle prossime elezioni. Nel frattempo, il COM.IT.ES di
San Francisco, estende un invito ai propri connazionali a
segnalare fin da ora, via email, il loro eventuale interesse a
diventare futuri consiglieri Comites.

As we have done in the past, during 2012 we sent out a wide range of
information on topics of interest to the Italian and Italian-American
community: scholarships offered by various Italian Ministries, Regions and
Italian-American associations; competitions of photography illustrating the
immigrant experience; online degree courses in Italian language and
culture; lectures by various Italian researchers working in various fields
worldwide; news from the COM.IT.ES Youth Committee; new guidelines
sent to the Patronati by I.N.P.S., the Italian Social Security Service;
cultural events organized by various Italian-American associations;
messages from the Italian Embassy in Washington D.C., and assistance to
Italians seeking local information.
2013 ELECTIONS FOR THE ITALIAN PARLIAMENT
RIGHT TO VOTE ABROAD BY CORRESPONDENCE
Pursuant to Presidential decree n. 226 of December 22, 2012, elections
will be held on February 24 and February 25, 2013 to elect
representatives to the Chamber of Deputies and to the Senate of the
Republic.
Outside of Italy, Italian citizens residing abroad who are registered
voters in the Overseas District may vote by correspondence.
All voters residing abroad that do not opt to vote in Italy before
January 3 will receive a packet by mail before February 6 from their
respective Consular Office containing the ballots. The stamped envelope
containing the ballots, completed as indicated by the instruction sheet,
must be sent by mail as soon as possible in order to reach the
Consular Office by – and no later than – 4:00 pm (local time) on
February 21.
The vote is personal and secret. Voting more than once or voting
on another’s behalf is prohibited. Violators of the law will be
punished to the fullest extent of the law.
Voters who have not received a complete packet by February 10
should contact their respective Consular office to verify their
electoral status and, if necessary, request a duplicate.
