History of Modena and Reggio Emilia
MODENA: HISTORY
Modena, a flourishing town during the Roman Empire, grew up in an area first inhabited by Ligurians
and subsequently by Etruscan and Celts. The name Muthuna comes from Etruscan and was changed
into Mutina by the Romans. After a long period of feuding between opposing city factions, the town
submitted to the domination of the Este family of Ferrara in 1288. In 1598 Duke of Este made Modena
the capital of his estates, a role retained by the city until 1796, when after the occupation by French
troops, it joined the Cisalpine Republic. In the following century the town underwent a radical
transformation owing to the construction of the railway and extension of the urban area. During the
Second World War, Modena was severely damaged by allied bombing. After the war it enjoyed major
economic, industrial and cultural growth to become one of the leading cities in the country in terms of
wealth and standard of living.
REGGIO EMILIA: HISTORY
Reggio Emilia has a rich and varied history: it was first inhabited by Ligurians then by Celts, Etruscans
and Gauls, Romans arrived in 193 B.C. The area of Reggio became the dominion of the “Canossas”.
Matilde di Canossa solved the conflict between the Emperor and the Pope in 1077 with the historic
meeting between Henry IV (the emperor) and Gregory (the Pope) in her castle. Following the French
Revolution a “liberty tree” was placed in Piazza Duomo in 1796. Here the Republic Cispadana was
founded: on the Seventh January 1797 the tricolour, which is still the official Italian flag, was created.
At the end of the XIX century struggles for workers emancipation were common, causing the creation of
many co-operative societies. Obtaining and defending Democracy have always been fundamental for the
town, which was decorated by the President of Republic with the gold medal for valour in the
Resistance.

Italian universities are divided into Departments.
Departments organize and define the academic activities of degree courses, promote, manage and carry
out research and organize doctoral (PhD) programs.
All Departments of the University of Modena and Reggio Emilia have adopted the semester system.
Lessons for the first semester usually run from the end of September to mid-December; lessons for the
second semester run from the end of February to mid-May. The examination periods are roughly from
the beginning of January to the end of February (first semester), and from the beginning of June to the
end of July (second semester). Periods not included in the semesters are Christmas, Easter, and
summer holidays. Lectures take place from Monday to Friday, in the mornings and afternoons, and are
generally delivered in Italian.
UNIMORE Departments

How is a degree course organized and which courses does your University offer?
The University of Modena and Reggio Emilia offers first, second and one – cycle degree courses, first
and second level Masters courses, Research Doctoral courses, Schools of Specialisation.
A degree programme is composed of a number of mandatory and optional teaching and learning
activities. Each of them has a certain number of credits calculated on the total amount of study
required in each case. One credit corresponds to 25 hours of student work. Sixty (60) credits measure
the workload of a full-time student during one academic year. Credits are awarded to students who
have passed examination in the case of taught courses, participated in and passed the assessment for
the laboratory activities, received a positive evaluation after an internship. In the Italian grading system
the minimum pass mark is 18 and the top mark is 30 cum laude.
FIRST, SECOND AND ONE-CYCLE DEGREES
In order to enrol in a first level degree and a one-cycle degree students have to acquire a “diploma di
scuola secondaria superiore”. In order to take a first level degree students have to acquire 180 credits in
three years and to take a one-cycle degree they have to acquire 300 or 360 credits.
To attend a second level degree students have to acquire a first level degree (180 credits). The duration
of the course is of two years and at the end they have to acquire 120 credits and they have to write and
discuss a dissertation.
The final mark ranges are from 66 to 110 cum laude.

MASTER COURSES
After a first or a second degree course students can attend a Master of first or second level which
generally includes an internship. Consider that a “Master Universitario” is different from a Master’s
degree which correspond to an italian second degree course.
RESEARCH DOCTORATE COURSES
The Research Doctorate courses have the purpose to supply to the enrolled students, also by periods
of study abroad and stage near subject private and publics, competences of elevated level and
qualification, adapted to the exercise of activity of research and skills that demand a high degree of
scientific preparation. The selection for the access to the Course of Doctorate happens for public
competition. The Course of Doctorate instituted by the University of Modena and Reggio Emilia begins
the 1st January and has the duration of three years.

International Students admission to first, second and one-cycle level degree courses
NON EU CITIZENS RESIDING ABROAD
Non EU citizens residing abroad have to submit their pre-enrollment at the Italian Embassy/Consulate
in the country where the school that issued the diploma is based (if this is different from the student’s
country of residence).
The application deadline is established every year by the Italian Ministry of Education, University and
Research.
Applicants have to choose a degree course for which Italian Universities reserve a specific
number of places for non–EU citizens ( www.studiare-in-italia.it/studentistranieri/ ).
For further information please contact the Italian Embassy/Consulate in your country .
For these students Italian language and culture proficiency test is required. (see Italian Language
Test section)
In order to enrol at the University of Modena and Reggio Emilia non EU citizens need:
- the original final diploma of secondary studies translated and legalized by the Italian Embassy
- declaration of value of the final diploma of secondary studies issued and legalized by the Italian
Embassy from which must result at least 12 years of schooling
- any other certificates relating to academic studies partially completed (exams passed and official
documentation regarding examination programmes). These are required to shorten programmes
of study (admission to a year other than first year) or to complete the compulsory 12 years of
schooling required for admission to Italian University.
Students with an academic degree are eligible for the second level degree course and should provide in
addition:
- the original academic qualification awarded by a University translated and legalized by the
Italian Embassy
- declaration of value of the academic qualification issued and legalized by the Italian Embassy
- a certificate issued by the competent academic authority, duly validated by the Italian Embassy,
with details of exams passed
- detailed study programs for every passed exam.
Please check if the course/department you have chosen accepts them in English, otherwise, they must
be translated by a sworn translator.
ITALIAN LANGUAGE TEST
To be admitted to a degree course a non EU citizen residing abroad has to pass an oral Italian language
test. The test usually takes place at the beginning of September, the date is defined yearly by the Italian
Ministry of Education, University and Research (ask to the Italian Embassy/Consulate).

To be admitted to the test, on the day of the test itself the student must show his/her passport and
entry visa for study reasons.
Students with a qualified certificate of Italian language proficiency are exempted from the test (for more
information about exemptions from the Italian language test see also http://www.study-initaly.it/studying/info-03.html ).
Students who pass the Italian language test, but who are not awarded a place among the limited
number of places available, are given the opportunity to apply for a “transfer” to another course of
studies at the University of Modena and Reggio Emilia where there are still places available, or to
another Italian University.
Once they have passed the test students can enrol at the Students Secretarial Offices.
EU CITIZENS – NON EU CITIZENS WITH A VISA
EU citizen and non EU citizens with a valid study visa can enroll as the Italian citizens at the Students
Secretarial Offices during the enrollment period (end of July - mid October).
Non EU Citizens should show a valid visa, a tourist Visa is not accepted.
They need:
- the original academic qualification awarded by a University translated and legalized by the
Italian Embassy
- declaration of value of the academic qualification issued and legalized by the Italian Embassy
from which must result at least 12 years of schooling

STUDENTS' SECRETARIAL OFFICES
The Students' Secretarial Offices deal with the school careers of students; they provide information on
paperwork procedures and expiry dates; they check the regularity of school careers and look after the
management of the general students’ archive; they issue all approved certificates.
The Secretarial Offices also provide information on: entrance to restricted-number courses, registration,
transfers, degree course transit, termination of studies, personalised study curriculum, etc.
Some procedures can be performed through self-service stations (towers) or via Internet.

I’m a EU/non EU student, do I need a residence permit during my studying period?
EU students
For a staying period within 3 months it’s not necessary to possess a residence permit and to register at
the City Hall/Registry Office.
For a staying period over 3 months within 8 days of your arrival at the University Residence it is
necessary going to the City Hall / Registry Office of:
Modena, Via Santi, 40; Reggio Emilia, Via Toschi, 27.
To register you need:
- passport or identity card
- photocopy of EHIC (European Health Insurance Card) and the form E106 (available by the
Health Services of your country) or private health insurance
- registration at University of Modena and Reggio Emilia (from the Student Secretarial Office of
the University of Modena and Reggio Emilia)
- “Dichiarazione di ospitalità” from the Responsible of the University Residence or photocopy of the
“contratto di locazione” in case of private accommodation
- documentary proof to have enough money for living (photocopy of the statement of bank
account, grants, family aids, ecc.) or substitute of financial resources (the form is available by
the City Hall/Registry Office)
- Fiscal code see For every day life which are the useful information to know? section
- a stamp duty “marca da bollo” of 16,00 Euros (you can buy it at the tobacconist’s or directly by
the City Hall/Registry Office).
Non EU students
For a staying period over 3 months within 8 days of the arrival you have to ask for the issue of a Study
Residence Permit by filling it the “Yellow Kit”. You can find it at Post Offices with a Sportello Amico
counter or at certain municipality or trade union offices.
If you go to a municipality or trade union office you do not need the kit of paper forms and you can take
advantage of free assistance from qualified personnel who will help you to complete your application.
The total fees to ask for the Residence Permit amounts to around 150,00 euros.
The toll-free number 800.309.309 (operated in cooperation with Anci) provides general information and
addresses of municipality and trade union offices equipped to handle applications, through responses
via text messaging. It is active 24 hours a day, every day, and provides information in Italian, English,
Spanish, Arabic and French.
The Poste Italiane number 803.160 provides the addresses of post offices with a Sportello Amico
counter. Service from Monday to Saturday, 8am to 8pm (only in Italian).
The number 848.855.888 provides information on the papers progress. Service from Monday to Friday,
8am to 8pm.

Filling in the Yellow Kit is quite complicated and requires attention. It is advisable to have it filled in by
qualified personnel. The trade union offices “ACLI” can assist you free of charge. They work on
appointment.

The payment must be done at the post office counter after the drawing up.
Remind: you do not need to buy the yellow kit paper forms before going to the trade union offices
because they fill in it on-line.

Which are the services offered by the University of Modena and Reggio Emilia?
ITALIAN LANGUAGE COURSES
The Language Centre of the University of Modena and Reggio Emilia offers pre-semester intensive
Italian Language Courses and regular Language courses of Italian for foreign students. The courses are
designed to improve students’ language skills in order to help them in their academic work in Italy.
The courses are free for all foreign students or researches working at the University of Modena and
Reggio Emilia.
Students’ language skills will be assessed at the beginning of semester through a placement test after
which students will be placed to a course suitable to their level. However, to be able to attend the
regular language courses students are required to have a pre-intermediate level of Italian. Each
semester the CLA will offer courses at B1, B2, C1 and C2 levels and on successful completion of any of
the above, students will obtain 4 credits.
Before the start of University classes, the CLA offers pre-semester courses (in September and in
February) for students who did not attain the required pre-intermediate level in the placement test.
Students who do not have the minimum language skills to attend these pre-semester courses can
benefit from the on-line course and the resources available in the self-access centers, where students
will be assisted by a trained language advisor who will advise them on the most appropriate learning
materials for the language skills they want to improve.
No credits are offered for either pre-semester intensive courses, on-line or self-access activities.

ER.GO Residences in Modena and Reggio Emilia
Students from other districts, in very indigent or indigent economic condition, have, by competition, the
chance of acquiring lodgings in the buildings of ER.GO.
Requirements for lodging assignment are the same as for the granting of scholarships. Accommodation
in residences and apartments (some of which recently renovated), is close to the university
departments, or else inside the university campus. Other accommodation is located in areas within easy
reach of the faculties on foot or using public transport.
The yearly charge (for 11 months) goes from a minimum of around euros 1.500,00 to a maximum of
around euros 2.100,00.

Located in the heart of the city of Modena, in a 17th century building close to Piazza Grande and the
Faculties of Law and Letters, Collegio San Carlo is the University's oldest college, established in the
early 17th century as a Collegium Nobilium.
Today it is reserved for the students of the University of Modena and Reggio Emilia.

E-MAIL SERVICE
In mid-March 2001, the University of Modena and Reggio Emilia began providing a free e-mail service
for all enrolled students in order to favour communication between students and lecturers. The e-mail
box is ACTIVATED about 15 days after enrolment (when the student is given a magnetic card) and
DEACTIVATED about 15 days after graduation/specialisation.
STUDENTS’ SECRETARY’S OFFICE ONLINE COUNTER
For interactive Students’ secretary’s office services such as pre-enrolment or to see your administrative
position, the ESSE3 service is operative. This should also be used to register for exams and various
other functions.
COMPUTER WORKSHOPS
Various departments and libraries feature classrooms, workshops and computer stations for use by
students for study purposes.

UNIVERSITY LIBRARIES
The University Library System (Sistema Bibliotecario d’Ateneo) consists of seven libraries and a
coordination centre. In the Library System, centralized and decentralized functions aim at offering
support to the University’s didactic and research activities coordinating projects and services, in order
to select, gather, organize and offering users access to all types of information.
The University Libraries are divided into subject areas according to cultural affinities and offer many
services to all those who study and work in the University of Modena and Reggio Emilia:

Modena and Reggio Emilia have a typically continental climate: winters are quite cold with
temperatures sometimes below 0°C. In spring and summer temperatures range between 10 and 20°C.
Summers temperatures are often over 30°C.

Modena stands at 34 meters above sea level. The town has 6 parks and is considered to be one of the
greenest cities in Italy.
Modena is also famous for the quality of its food. Parmesan cheese, Tortellini, Lambrusco (the region’s

How can I reach Modena/Reggio Emilia?
BY PLANE
The nearest airport is the “Guglielmo Marconi” airport in Bologna.
The airport is well linked to the Bologna central railway station by “Aerobus-BLQ”. The trip takes about
20 minutes and costs 6.00 euros. Ticket also available on the bus.
Once at the station, trains to Modena and Reggio Emilia are very frequent and the journey takes 20/30
minutes. Remind to stamp the ticket before getting on board of the train (yellow machines).
From the Bologna airport you can also catch the “AerBus” to Modena. The bus reaches the Modena bus
station where you can catch buses or taxis. The journey takes 50 minutes. Price: one way fare € 15.00.
Ticket also available on the bus, free luggage transport.
The bus leaves every two hours: from Bologna airport first bus leaves at 6.15 am, last bus leaves at
22.30 pm
BY CAR
Two motorways connect Modena/Reggio Emilia to the rest of the country: The A22 (known as the
Autostrada del Brennero) and the A1 (known as the Autostrada del Sole).
If you arrive from the north you should take “Reggio Emilia” exit (if you have to reach Reggio Emilia) or
“Modena Nord” exit (obviously if you have to arrive in Modena).
The “Modena Sud” exit is better if you are coming from the south.
In Italy you must pay to use the motorways. You are issued a ticket at your entrance and when you exit
you pay a toll based on the distance covered. Credit cards are accepted. Do not try to enter or exit
through TELEPASS gates: these gates require a special device on your car.
