My Dear Friends in St. Philomena,
Our Lady of Grace, hear our prayers today. As we pick up our rosary beads in your
honor, may we receive the grace to pray from our heart.
In this beautiful month of Our Lady we also have the gift of St. Philomena’s birth into the
world. There are no biographic records of St. Philomena. The knowledge of her life
begins with the finding of her body and the start of her signs to her devotees. Therefore,
the first records about our saint start with the discovery of her tomb in Priscilla’s
catacombs and the translation of her body to Mugnano del Cardinale where her
providential influence in Church life began.
This was the first time we heard of St. Philomena and the first time we felt her presence.
For me, it is the most special of all the feast days and is the most spiritual time at the
Sanctuary. I will be celebrating the sacrifice of Holy Mass at 10 am at the Altar of St.
Philomena. At 7 pm I will celebrate a solemn Holy Mass with the choir at the High Altar.
If you join the Archconfraternity Facebook group you will receive updates of these
events throughout that day.
At the end of this newsletter I gladly include announcements of many events planned
around the world for St. Philomena. Please keep in your prayers Fr Robert Gibas of
Ohio, the Spiritual Director of the U.S.A., for his continued healing through our Saint.

A Message from the Sanctuary of Saint Philomena, Mugnano del Cardinale, Feast May25, 2013
You will be in my prayers throughout Saturday, May 25th and I wish you all a very
blessed day through the powerful intercession of St. Philomena, virgin and martyr.
God Bless you
Msgr. Giovanni Braschi
Rector of the Sanctuary of Saint Philomena
Excerpt from Msgr. Giovanni Braschi’s New Book,
St. Philomena, Testimony of the Light of Christ
“The finding of Saint Philomena’s body happened on May 25, 1802 which was the
second year of Pius VII’s pontificate.
On May 24, 1802, the fossors who worked to free Priscilla’s catacombs from materials
and rubble built up over the centuries had reached its center, not far from the Greek
Chapel, very close to the skylight. One of them, who remains unknown, when removing
the soil from one of the tunnels, hit some tiles which had kept a niche closed.
On these tiles, in a perfect state of preservation, there was drawn a palm, one of the
signs or symbols of martyrdom.
Following the instructions received by Mons. Ponzetti, the worker stopped and went to
report his finding to Fr. Filippo Ludovici, a second caretaker.
On May 25, 1802, Fr. Ludovici, accompanied by many witnesses, one of whom was
another priest, went down in the catacombs and, under his supervision, the fossor kept
digging, finding the funeral stone of a small tomb which looked like one of an
adolescent.
It was made of three tiles on which was the writing: “LUMENA – PAX TE – CUM FI”. Also
engraved there were two anchors, three arrows, a palm and a flower. In the niche was
also a broken vial containing a blackish, dried up residue. The venerable relics were
carefully wrapped in five wrappers and stored in a duly authenticated wooden box.
They were transferred with the usual formalities to the Relics Treasury in Rome, while
the tiles were transferred first to the College Massimo of the Jesuits in Rome and then to
the Museum of the Christian Antiquities in the Vatican.”

The Sanctuary at Present
The Sanctuary consists of the main church with the Sacred Altar of St Philomena, a
museum, devotional item shop and pilgrim center. The pilgrim center has been partly
restored and can now take a pilgrimage of approximately 50 devotees. The Rector of
the Sanctuary, Msgr. Giovanni Braschi, has undertaken the work of the pilgrim center in
order that the devotees who come from far and near can be close to Saint Philomena in
both body and spirit. He views the devotion to Saint Philomena as one large family, the
head of which is the Sanctuary and should be the home to all who come to visit. The
section of the Sanctuary which has not been restored but will soon be with the help and
support of donations by worldwide devotees, was once a convent and orphanage. There
is a great deal of work and money needed for this section alone. It is the Rector’s wish to
restore it soon to be able to offer additional pilgrim rooms. There are still adaptations
which need to be made to accommodate our devotees who have a handicap and who
wish to visit the Sanctuary. There is also ongoing work of creating the crypt of Saint
Philomena, which will be the replica of the catacombs and have the tile stones of Saint
Philomena laid out as they were when the tomb was discovered. More urgently,
donations are required to repair the dome of the Sanctuary from water penetration.
From this you will see how much the Sanctuary is in need of your help in any way you
can. The only kind of supporting funds of the Sanctuary come through the sale of the
devotional items, donations, Mass requests, pilgrim reservations and the help and
support sent in by private devotees and the official devotional centers.

Sulle tegole, in ottimo
