Foreign pupils in italian regions
This scheme shows a very different situation in northern Italy regions compared to southern Italy regions:
foreign pupils reach 10,7% in Emilia Romagna Region

In the last three years the italian schools with foreign pupils rise from 60,7% to 67,1%, in particular the upper secondary schools

The CENSIS 2007 Research shows the placement criteria in schools:
1 placement with same age pupils; 2 all foreign pupils are placed during the whole school year; 3 respect of all rules to welcome

Only in a few cases intercultural dimension activities are put in
motion, but it would be useful to be present with:

Language and culture courses of the immigration countries
Language laboratory access for the foreign pupils’ families
Informal meeting to socialize .
It is not enought required the support of professionals, such as
mediators, who could guide and promote the integration process

PROFIT
Both families and teachers think that the different school
performance between italian and foreign pupils is only due to
•
pupils that are placed in italian school during the school year
•
pupils recently arriving
All school problems depend on italian language comprehension
and italian, history and geography are the hardest subjects
In general italian teachers seem to use lab methodology to favour
foreign pupil success instead of to modify the curriculum or the
topics

ESITI E ORIENTAMENTO
• As the Italian Minister of Education stated , at the end of the
compulsory school, foreign pupils are oriented to technical and
vocational courses or vocational regional courses
• Motivations of this choice depend on social, economic and cultural
family contest more than marks, gender, possibility to set in Italy
• “Only in few cases the choises are made after an activity organized
by Local Services ”[1].

1 Define a welcome rule for foreign pupils with Comune di Ravenna and Casa delle Culture, to favour the
school integration of youngs through meeting with mediators to help pupils, families and teachers
•
2 Set up a group of teachers with knowledge of intercultural topics to project and propose intercultural curricula.
•
3 Activate languages laboratory (levels from A1 to B2) to learn italian as a second language , to use during the
school year
.
•
4 Give the mediators an important role to welcome the new coming foreing pupils and to support foreign pupils
that already attend the italian school
•
5 Organize and let partecipate teachers in new methodology course in Italy and under the European Scheme of
Long Life Learning ; elaborate strategies and good practises usuful for other teachers
•
6 Realize projects involving intercultural education
we want to realize a mother tongue lab to underline the importance of the culture of the foreign pupils to acquire
strength identity and self-consideration, to firm competence and knowledge, to favour comprehension ,social and
affective development
