And with the support of the municipalities of Agordo, Alleghe, Canale d'Agordo, Falcade, Taibon Agordino
Introduction
The Conference “Whose Alps are these?” aims to investigate the political, economical and cultural
position of contemporary Alpine world, land of conflicts and encounter among local claims,
regional development strategies and European cooperation projects. The issue is topical, also
because of the celebrations of the 150th anniversary of the Unification of Italy (1861-2011).
The discussion begins on the political and administrative structures at the different scales, and it
involves wider issues such as the economic problems and social conflicts about the ownership and
management of goods and resources at risk, as well as the cultural processes and representations
connected with the exploitation of one of the most popular tourist spots in the world. The general
goal is to enlighten the various aspects of the governance, ownership and belonging in the Alpine
region, looking for a dialogue among different actors at different scales.
The Conference will be held in the Dolomites region, recently included in the World Heritage List
(2009): it aims to address also some questions concerning the meaning and consequences of
being a “world heritage”, towards a balance between local/global needs and wishes.
