that best describe FIP.
Since 1945 FIP has worked with avant-garde technology in
the field of civil engineering and gained particular expertise
in the supply of services and products for roads, motorways,
railways, industrial plants, tunnels, buildings, oil rigs.
Investment in human and technological resources, an
innovative way of thinking, rigorous targets of quality, safety
and organisation are the tools that permit FIP to respond
with growing influence to the ever more demanding
requirements of public and private Clients, in Italy as well as
abroad.
In addition to the main office and production facility in
Padova, FIP has a structure of offices and representatives in
more than 40 countries.

most sophisticated project.

SPECIFICATIONS AND APPROVALS
FIP designs and manufactures its devices in accordance with
the most widely adopted and stringent international
specifications: AASHTO, CNR, British Standards, DIN,
SNCF, EN. Moreover, FIP has obtained certifications and
approvals from various international boards, including the
German Zulassungen and the certification of Italferr, the
supervising body of Italian High Speed Railways.
The certification ISO 9001, obtained in 1992, guarantees
that the same quality level is kept from the design stage
through manufacture to installation.The FIP quality system is
also certified to perform welding activities in accordance
with EN 729-2 and DIN 18 800-7.

STRONG POINTS
The technical department is made up of specialised
engineers and technical personnel, who have advanced data
processing systems at their disposal i.e. calculation
programmes for designing of the equipment, for performing
dynamic analysis of structures and finite elements analysis.
The technical staff works as a team with the designers to
propose the best technical and economic solution for any
structure and, if necessary, design specific devices.
The research and development department develops
innovative design solutions tackling the needs of a constantly
evolving field. For years it has been working on extensive
research programmes, promoted and financed by
international bodies and managed in co-operation with
Universities, research centres and other companies. The
technology created by the research and development
department has been used for avant-garde applications. FIP’s
intense research activity has also led to the registration of
more than one hundred patents.
The function test laboratory works in synergy with the
other departments. It is equipped with the most up-to-date
machinery for dynamic and static tests on materials and
devices. Of particular interest is the press (one of the
biggest in the world) capable of applying a vertical load of
80,000 kN and a horizontal load of 7,500 kN, and the 630
kW machine for dynamic testing. The laboratory equipment
and know-how service the most complex testing needs of
both FIP and other companies.

elastic isolators.
FIP can count on its own production facility comprising a
metalworking section, a section for mechanical works such
as lathing, milling, etc, carried out on machinery with digital
control, a wide assembling area and two sophisticated
painting machines.
Due to its wide experience FIP has developed technology
and equipment for specialist site activities
(hydrodemolition, bridge deck jacking operations,
inspections, etc.) and original chemical and concrete
products to guarantee the most effective solutions to all
possible site problems.
FIP collaborates with the world’s leading designers and
contractors to realise internationally renowned projects.

BRIDGE BEARINGS
They enable the transmission of vertical and horizontal loads
between deck and pier/abutment, and simultaneously allow
rotation and displacement.
The range of the main FIP structural bearings includes:
• all types of PTFE/steel bearings;
• all types of elastomeric bearings.
Apart from the traditional equipment, FIP can design special
devices such as bearings with uplift capacity, with adjustable
height, dynamometric bearings, etc.

EXPANSION JOINTS
The expansion joints for bridges and viaducts feature the
following properties:
• they enable relative movement (displacement and rotation)
between facing structural parts;
• they ensure the continuity of the road surface;
• they prevent water leakage.
The FIP range of expansion joints includes:
• modular reinforced elastomeric expansion joints for
movement from 30 to 800 mm;
• finger type expansion joints in weathering steel for movement
from 50 to 1400 mm;
• railway expansion joints;
• plug joints for cold application in epoxy mortar;
• buried expansion joints;
• modular rail joints.

FITTINGS FOR TUNNELS
Shield Tunnel Boring Machines (TBM) are becoming the most
common means used for the construction of tunnels. This
technique requires the main lining to be made with concrete
prefabricated segments.
For this type of tunnel FIP can design and supply:
• watertight gaskets;
• connection systems for prefabricated elements;
• guidance rods;
• adhesives;
• load spreading pads (bituminous packings);
• threaded inserts for segments handling;
• flat jacks for vault pre-loading.

SEISMIC DEVICES
Storebælt East bridge (Denmark) - 5,000 kN shock transmitters.
They protect structures from dynamic actions induced by
earthquakes and are also suitable to reduce the effects of
vibrations such as those due to windstorms.
The four basic categories are:
• ISOLATORS - They limit the acceleration transmitted to the
structure, through the increase of the fundamental period, and
hence reduce the inertial forces.
• DAMPERS - They dissipate part of the input energy, thus
contributing to reduce the inertial forces, according to their
constitutive law (viscous, viscoelastic or elastic-plastic).
• SHOCK TRANSMISSION UNITS - They create temporary
restraints, thus resulting in the mutual collaboration among the
elements of the structures connected to them.
• SHAPE MEMORY ALLOY DEVICES - They are made of shape
memory alloy and are particularly suitable to reduce the
earthquake effects on monumental structures.
NOISE BARRIERS
Noise barriers definitely constitute the most effective and
widespread system for reducing noise pollution. FIP’s
operations concern the road and railway sectors by means of:
• monitoring of the territory’s noise levels;
• analysis of the visual impact, finding the solution that best fits
in with the surroundings;
• design and setting up of effective acoustic barriers;
• acoustic testing of the structures set up.

VIBRATION-DAMPING SYSTEMS
FIP has developed a wide range of systems for vibration
reduction. In the railway, tramway and underground railway
sectors special elastomeric mats can be placed under ballast or
underneath concrete platforms to insulate the surrounding
area from vibrations induced by the passage of the trains. In
other sectors vibration mitigation can be obtained by means of
tuned mass dampers or of other types of seismic devices.
