Just Few Tips on Milan and Lombardy
Lombardy has a great importance in the Italian context owing to its geographical
position, its economy and its history. It is situated in northern Italy, at the foot of the Alps and
in the centre of the North Italian Plain (Pianura Padana), at the intersection of the main routes
which link the Mediterranean area and central Europe. Lombardy stretches from the Alps to
the lush valley of the Po river. It is a fairly varied region with areas of flat land, mighty peaks,
gentle undulating hills, enchanting lakes, like Garda, Maggiore and Como, and many rivers,
the greatest of which is the Po. It is one of Italy’s richest and busiest regions, home to the
historic towns of Mantova, Bergamo and Cremona.
The stylish and sophisticated city of Milan is the main city of the region and the economic
heart of Italy, where the Italian Stock Exchange is located and where most of the country’s
important corporations have their headquarter.
Milan is internationally renowned for fashion, design, finance, and industry, but there is a
lot more to this dynamic city than just economics and business.
With a history dating back to about 700 B.C., it is also a treasurehouse of art, architecture
and archeology – even though its turbulent history has caused widespread destruction on
several occasions, last of all in 1943, meaning that sightseeing can be something like a
treasure hunt. The city’s impressive Duomo is one of the largest Gothic cathedrals on earth.
In Corso Vittorio Emanuele, Via Manzoni, Via Montenapoleone and Via della Spiga you
may also visit the shops of the most famous fashion designers.
The stock exchange (Borsa), investment houses, brokers and most of the big banks have
their offices in a triangle between the La Scala opera house, the cathedral square (Piazza
Duomo) and the castle (Castello).
Being the centre of finance and business adds to the feel that this is the Italian city with the
most buzz.
Milan's narrow streets and welcoming parks are a pleasant escape from its busier extremes.
By day, you can explore the cathedral, museums, cafes and designer boutiques. In the
evening, you may choose from hundreds of fine dining options, including the very best Italian
food and other world cuisines, see an opera or visit the nightspots in the Navigli or Corso
Como areas.
Journey south to the town of Pavia to check out the unmissable Certosa di Pavia. A
Carthusian monastery founded in 1396, it is truly magnificent and one of the most notable
buildings produced during the Italian Renaissance. The towns of Bergamo, Cremona and
Mantova are well worth visiting and are all within easy reach of Milan. With its wealth of
Medieval, Renaissance and Baroque architecture, the walled hilltop town of Bergamo is
an enchanting place. The town of Cremona has a century-old tradition of making violins, all
of the famous violin-making families started here – Stradivari being the most renowned. Visit
some of the violin workshops and see how they are made.
One of the most beautiful cities in Lombardy is Mantova. The Palazzo Ducale and the 15th
century Basilica di Sant’Andrea dominate the city and are well worth a look.
What really draws visitors to Lombardy, however, are the lakes. Lake Maggiore is around 65
kilometres long and is home to the beautiful Borromean Islands. Check out the Palazzo
Borromeo on Isola Bella which houses Flemish tapestries and works by Tiepolo and Van
Dyck; sample the idyllic fishing village atmosphere on Isola dei Pescatori. Visit the town of
Orta San Giulio on the lesser-known Lago d’Orta on the border with Piedmont. Less crowded
than other lakeside towns, it is an attractive, relaxing place.
Lake Como’s blue-green waters are set against the snowy peaks of the Alps. Visit the heart
of the old town, to admire the 400-year old buildings and its basilica. Take time to visit some
of the charming villages that dot the shores of the lake. Lake Garda is the biggest of the
lakes, lying between the Alps and the Pianura Padana. The towns of Sirmione and Riva del
Garda are well worth visiting.

Accommodation
SDA Bocconi students generally rent furnished apartments in the School vicinity. Shared housing
(private room, use of bathroom and kitchen) will cost approximately € 500 per month. A studio

plus a refundable deposit which can be as much as three-month rent.

Rent may include water, heating and condominium expenses. Be sure to check if the rent is
plus expenses or if they are included. Gas, electricity and telephone contracts must be made
with your local utility office.
The electricity is 220 volts and sockets take two-pin plugs. If you are bringing different
electrical appliances, you will need a transformer. Utility bills can be paid at the post office or
through your bank.
As a foreigner renting furnished accommodation you have no tenancy rights. Your landlord
may or may not provide you with a contract. Be careful as to how much notice you are
required to give before terminating the contract. If you give insufficient notice your landlord
may refuse to return your deposit. One of the best sources of information is "Secondamano"
(www.secondamano.it), a newspaper issued Monday to Saturday and available at all newsstands (“edicola”).

Nursery Schools and Kindergartens
Enrolment to public “asili nido” – nursery schools (for 0 to 3 year-old children) closes in May,
but each school may decide to reopen it again later in the year. Enrolment to “scuole materne” –
kindergartens (for 3 to 5 year-old children) opens in January/February. However, since it seems very
difficult to be admitted (there are long waiting lists), you may opt for private institutions, even if they
might be more expensive.

Visa
All students from non-EU countries must obtain a student visa
before leaving their home country.
Try to obtain a multiple entry Schengen student Visa, so as not to
have problems in leaving and reentering
Italy, should you wish to travel to other European countries during
your stay in Italy (although, depending on your citizenship, you may
not have any problems when travelling through Schengen countries
as tourists, but double-check this with the Italian Consulate).
To obtain a visa you must apply to the Italian Consulate in your
country. Go into this carefully, because rules are subject to change.
For updated information you may visit the
Ministry of Foreign Affairs website
www.esteri.it/mae/en
Main documents to be produced
(always check with the Consulate, please):
■ Declaration of admission to the Programme
■ Financial Documentation
■ Private Health Insurance valid for Italy; alternatively you may
purchase Assitalia once in Italy. Please note that the health
insurance should cover at least the duration of the VISA.
In case you have an insurance purchased in your country, when
applying for the permit to stay in Italy, you will need a document
in English clearly stating the start and end dates of the insurance
coverage, as well as the fact that it covers you in Italy.
The Italian Consulate must give you a validated stamped
copy of the letter of admission to the course (you will
have to use it when applying for your permit to stay in Italy).

the taximeter plus surcharges. Surcharges are normally indicated
on a notice in the taxi and apply to luggage, night trips,
and trips outside the city limits.
Bike Sharing

Parking
There are no parking facilities at SDA Bocconi, students must park
cars in the street. If you have a motorbike, it is advisable not to park
it on the pavement, you may be fined for it.
Motorbikes can be parked on pavements only on places marked
with white lines.
The traffic police regularly patrol the area and fines are high,
depending on the infraction. You may even be unlucky enough
to have your car towed away (call the “Vigili Urbani”,
Tel. 0277275002, to locate your car).
Access by car to downtown Milan is restricted, for this reason you
had better go there by underground or bus.
In the city centre, you can park in areas marked with blue lines, but
you must buy a blue “Sosta Milano” card in bars (“Tabacchi”),
where the “Sosta Milano” sticker is exhibited,
or from parking attendants.
Costs are indicated on parking signs.
For more info: www.atm-mi.it
Don’t leave your car in areas marked with yellow lines (residents
only).
If your car is parked on the street, you might have to remove
it one night per week and park it on the pavement,
because of street cleaning. There are signs posted on the street
indicating the day and time (normally from midnight to 6:00 am) of
the cleaning. If you forget to move your car, you might be fined or
even have your car towed away. The morning after street cleaning,
you must remember to park your car back on the street or it might
get stuck on the pavement surrounded by other vehicles.
Remove your car radio and any personal belongings
from your car when you park.
