TRIP TO SEE MOSES AT SIGHT & SOUND
THEATRE IN LANCASTER, PA.
We are very excited to announce our Parish will
be going to see the brand new show Moses at the
Sight & Sound Theatre in Lancaster, PA on
Wednesday, April 23, 2014. This all new
production is truly an experience in both
spectacle and story. Witness the golden splendor
of ancient Egypt and the oppression of the
Hebrew slaves. Meet the humble, broken man
whom God raises to become their deliverer.
Travel with Moses on his quest for personal
identity that changes the course of history.
Experience God’s awe-inspiring power in the
center of the Red Sea. Feel the celebration of the
Israelites as they brush past you on their path to
freedom. Ticket prices for adults are $130.00
and for children $105.00. We have the same
seats we had for the Miracle of Christmas. Our
first stop on this trip will be Bird in Hand
Farmers Market, then to the show which begins at
2:45 PM. Our day ends with supper at the Good
& Plenty Restaurant we have all become so fond
of. As you know, tickets for these shows go
quickly and are limited. Make your reservations
early and join in the fun. Any questions may be
directed to Rose Marie Foglia at the Rectory.
Dear Parish Family:
“Behold the Lamb of God who takes away the sins of the world.”
“You are my servant... I will make a light to the nations....”
Today’s first reading and Gospel are illustrated in our church. If you look at the
base of our altar, you will see a mosaic of a lamb holding a cross on which is displayed a white
banner with a red cross. If you look at our tabernacle when the solid door is open, usually
during communion time, you will see the inner door of the tabernacle. On this inner door you
will see a painting of the lamb seated on a book. The book, although closed, displays seven
ribbons. In chruch art, the lamb represents Christ. The book represents the Word of God and
the ribbons, the seven sacraments. The Cross drapped with white banner represents victory over
death. Lambs were sacrificed in the ancient world and there are no longer existing temples in
Jerusalem as sin offerings. In the story of Passover in the Book of Exodus, it was the blood of
the sacrificed lamb which saved the Israelites from death, as the Angel of Death passed over
their houses in ancient Egypt. Today’s readings from the Gospel and Isaiah outline the ministry
of Jesus. Jesus is both servant and lamb of God. Jesus takes upon himself the sins of the world
as he faithfully serves us and God. Being the light of the world, which the darkness has not
extinguished, Christ will be seen as the Servant of God who brings redemption.
Jesus is seen as the Servant of God par excellence. He is the archetype of all servants of God.
In the Book of the Prophet Isaiah from Chapter 49-52, we find the servant of God passages.
Scholars have held many interpretations as to the identiy of the Servant of God. The servant is
seen by some as the Isarelites collectively. Others see the servant as the prophet who stands
behind this Isaiah tradition. Still others see these passages as referring to the Messiah. It is
possible perhaps to see all three interpretations as operative in these servant passages. These
passages have been used since the beginning of Christianity to describe Jesus and his ministry.
Early Christianity saw these passages illustrated in the Life, Death and Resurrection of Jesus. In
the Gospel, Jesus will say of himself “that the Son of Man came to serve and be served.”\
We see Jesus as servant throughout his ministry but particularly in the Passion Narratives. The
servant empties himself for the sake of those being served. Jesus washes the feet of the disciples.
In this act he symbolically empties himself which he would graphically do in his death for the
redemption of the world. It will be his faithfulness to his mission that will cause his death and
heal our unfaithfulness.
If Jesus takes to himself the title of Servant and if Jesus is the Lamb of God who takes away the
sins of the world, what then should the ministry of the church be? If we the Body of Christ are
baptized into Christ, our role too is one of servant not of power. Clergy, religious and lay
Ministers are not in roles of honor or power, but of service. Imitating Christ the servant will save
us from thinking of ourselves as people of power.

RIGHT TO LIFE
On Wednesday, January 22nd thousands of Catholics if not millions will go to Washington D C to oppose
abortion and speak out for the right of the unborn. We support these people and pray with them and for them.
All attacks on life are wrong and sinful. While abortion is the cornerstone or the kernel or the symbol to all life
issues, it will help connect this issue to other life issues which may not be so obvious. If we are against abortion,
we must also be against all violence which endangers life. Violence comes in many forms: domestic violence
which sends many woman and children to the hospital is not acceptable. No man or woman should strike each
other no matter what the stress level. No child should be exposed to seeing his/her parent as a victim of
violence. If we are against violence, we must be outraged by the lack of Gun control laws which seems to
prevade many states in our country. If we are for life, than all acts of terrorism, killing of children and teachers at
several schools in the recent past, the killing of people at shopping malls and acts of terrorism in our country or
any other place are to be seen as crimes against humanity. If we are for life, then we are called to defend life in
all of its stages: the unborn, the newly born, children, the young, the middle-aged, the elderly and the terminally
ill. If we reverence life than we are to see the value of life as found in the terminally ill. If we reverence life, than
we are to see the value of life as found in people of special needs in all levels. If life is valued, we also must stand
against the death penalty since this too violates not only the life of the convicted but our own life principle.
In the celebration of the Incarnation, God takes on our humanity. It is through our humanity that Christ acts in
the Body of Christ the Church. Attacks on Life shatter the Icon of Christ found in you and in me.
Cari Parrocchiani
L’agnello veniva sacrificato come
I primi Cristiani
