Present Progressive
• To show an action is happening you use
the present progressive.
• When in the present progressive, the verb
is formed with the verb stare in front of it.
• Followed by the gerund of the verb.
The Gerund
• The gerund relates to the –ing form or the
verb in English
• An example: sleeping.
• In Italian this is formed by dropping the
verb ending –are, -ere, or –ire
• Then you add on the ending -ando or endo
The Correct Gerund
• The –are ending goes to –ando.
• The –ere and –ire goes to –endo.
• Examples:
» Mangiare  magiando
» Perdere  perdendo
» Dormire  dormendo
The Exception!
• There are two irregular verbs that do not
follow the pattern
