FIRST ANNOUNCEMENT AND CALL FOR ABSTRACTS 17th EWA Symposium during IFAT 2014 “WatEnergyResources – Water, Energy and Resources: Innovative Options and Sustainable Solutions” Munich, Germany, 5-9 May 2014 Organized by: European Water Association (EWA) Deadline for Abstract Submission: 15 October 2013 Interestingly, “WatER” can be seen as the acronym of three fundamental environmental components: Water itself, Energy and Resources. The successful harmonization of these “water-permeated” components is actually a main technical-scientific challenge for the human society impacted by both global environmental pressures and economic difficulties. In this perspective, the challenge for the water and wastewater sector is to combine the traditional goal of achieving appropriate and improved quality standards with the exigencies of energy sustainability and resource conservation and recovery of the solutions/systems proposed, planned and implemented that should attain also an economic efficiency. In line with the new claim of IFAT as “resources, innovations, solutions”, the 17th Edition of the EWA Symposium - “WatEnergyResources” is looking for speakers and poster authors to inspire innovative options and discuss sustainable solutions orientated towards the feasible correlation of the energy and material resources with four strategic areas of the water sector: water supply, wastewater treatment, biosolid management and new sanitation systems. Symposium Technical and Scientific Committee R. Falconer (UK), P. Goethals (BE), A. Heduit (FR), P. Horton (UK), K. Kovacs (HU), M. Kollar (SK), J. Londong (DE), P. Matthews (UK), H. Marecos do Monte (PT), M. Patziger (HU), J. Pinnekamp (DE), M. Soler (ES), J.F. Schmidt (DE), F. Tatàno (IT), J. Wanner (CZ), B. Zmaic (HR). Symposium Themes Theme 1: Energy and Efficiency in Water Supply (including, but not limited to: Water footprint accounting – Detecting and managing water leaks in water supply networks Automating system operations and implementing remote-control systems - Implementing efficiency measures [pump systems, pressure management for leak reduction, metering and monitoring] - Integration of hydropower with other renewable energy sources - Cost efficiency of options/solutions). Theme 2: Energy and Resource Management in Wastewater Treatment (including, but not limited to: Options for energy savings at WWTPs - Aeration control strategies Renewable energy generation from wastewater - Biofuels generable by using resources [carbon and nutrients] in wastewater for growing algae - Applications of microbial fuel cells - Solar radiation and wind power captured at WWTPs - Hydropower or heating/cooling energy using WWTP influent or effluent – Reuse of treated wastewater Cost efficiency of options/solutions). Theme 3: Bio-energy and By-Product Recovery in Biosolids Management (including, but not limited to: Anaerobic digestion and co-digestion of sludge and biomasses/residues/organic waste - Anaerobic digested sludge as useful inoculum for digestion process of organic substrates and biomasses - Bio-hydrogen production - Energy utilization options of biogas - Detailed digestate characterization and quality - Innovative options and solutions for digestate recovery and utilization - Cost efficiency of options/solutions). Theme 4: Energy and Resource Recovery in New Sanitation Systems (including but not limited to: Integration of renewable energy systems in new sanitation districts Integration with the bioenergy recovery of organic fraction of municipal solid waste Wastewater separation and recovery options and solutions in Eco-building approaches Full-scale projects of new sanitation systems - Cost efficiency of options/solutions). Call for Abstracts Deadline for abstract submission: 15 October 2013. The official language will be English and all papers must therefore be written and presented in English. The submitted abstracts will be evaluated and selected for oral and poster presentations by the “Symposium Technical and Scientific Committee” (members of the “ETSC, European Technical and Scientific Committee” at the EWA). Criteria for selection include correspondence to the Symposium themes, originality, project/research status, technical and/or scientific content, benefits, significance, appropriate case-studies, and quality. Presentations of a purely commercial nature will not be accepted. EWA Secretariat will notify authors of acceptance at latest by 30 November 2013. Authors will be required to submit the final paper to the EWA Secretariat by 1st March 2014. All final papers selected and submitted will be included in the Symposium Proceedings (Summaries + CD ROM) made available at the event. After the event, the Proceedings will be available also at the EWA web site (http://www.ewa-online.eu/). Submission of Abstracts Abstracts related to the Symposium Themes mentioned above should be submitted as a Word or PDF file attachment at latest by 15 October 2013 by e-mail to: [email protected] (Boryana Dimitrova, Symposium Secretariat - European Water Association Theodor-Heuss-Allee 17, 53773 Hennef, Germany, Phone +49 2242 872189, Fax +49 2242 872135) Abstracts (at least one but no more than two full pages) should be structured with the following order: Title; Authors and Affiliations; Keywords (maximum of 5); Abstract text. Authors of accepted abstracts who does not submit the final papers by the due date will be replaced on the program. The Leading Authors (who will present the papers - oral or poster presentations - at the Symposium) will be responsible for paying their own travel expenses for the Symposium. There is no participation fee for the Authors. With the submission of abstract by e-mail, the following “Abstract Form” should be completed and inserted in the corresponding e-mail message.
