CATHEDRAL - DUOMO
The Duomo, symbol of Milan, is of uncertain date. Probably the construction
work began in 1386 at the time of Gian Galeazzo Visconti, as can be read on a
small stone of the first bay to the right of the Church. Certainly, the facade was
built around the first half of the sixteenth century. The construction went on for
centuries: the “Fabbrica del Duomo” (Duomo’s factory) was an endless task. It
is an building in Gothic style; its main spire reaches 108.5 m of height. There
are many works of art jealously preserved in the interior, including the Holy Nail
the Cross of Jesus kept in a tabernacle in a crucifix above the chancel.

VITTORIO EMANUELE II GALLERY
To the left of the cathedral is located the Vittorio Emanuele II Gallery, a covered
street that connects Piazza Duomo to Piazza della Scala. When it was built,
starting in 1865 to a design by Giuseppe Mengoni, were used as structural
materials, glass and iron, a cuttingedge technique at the time. The feeling that
you perceive walking through the gallery is to enter the lounge of the city, just
the original idea of the designers who wanted a porticoed street that would
serve as a showcase and walk to have a drink or dinner after the Opera. If you
want to go back to Milan or make a wish, the tradition is to do three laps of the
heel on the attributes of the mosaic bulls (representing the emblem of Turin) on
the floor of the central octagon gallery.

LA SCALA
The Teatro della Scala is the most famous temple in the world dedicated to
the opera. Designed by the architect Piermarini, was inaugurated in 1778 with
“Europe Recognized” by Antonio Salieri. The theater looks like an Italian room,
enclosed in a building with strict neoclassical lines. The facade opens onto a
road (Via Manzoni) and hence the central portico is achieved protruding, almost
an invitation to step in and stop the carriages. Piermarini preferred solutions
sober and harmonics, giving up the luxury and superfluous decoration. All the
architectural elements of the façade are made of lightcolored stone of VIggiù,
only the gable is decorated with a basrelief depicting the Chariot of Apollo,
protector of the Muses.

Bishop Ambrose founded the Basilica of St. Ambrose in 379 as “Basilica

is preceded by an open space, the quadrangle which was used as a principal
place of meeting (only for nonreligious) to all citizens. The interior consists of

SANTA MARIA DELLE GRAZIE
Santa Maria delle Grazie is a beautiful example of Renaissance architecture
but its fame is connected to the Last Supper by Leonardo da Vinci, jealously
guarded in the refectory. The painting depicts the dramatic moment in which
Christ, seated at the center and surrounded by the apostles, reveals the
impending betrayal of one of them which led him to be crucified. Leonardo
experimented with the application of color on dry plaster giving up the fresco
technique. This brought the painting to a quick and premature degradation.
“The Last Supper” is a famous iconography and became a UNESCO World

Airports and Stations
HOW TO MOVE FROM AIRPORTS TO MILAN CENTER
Milan is served by three airports: Linate, Malpensa and Orio Al Serio. Linate is
the closest airport, mainly used for domestic routes.
Malpensa airport is mainly used for international flights, and is the main airport
of Milan Easyjet. Other lowcost airlines such as Ryanair, fly mainly to Orio,
45km from Milan.
LINATE
There is a frequent bus that connects the airport to Piazza San Babila (city
center). You must purchase your tickets by special distributors before boarding,
because you cannot buy tickets on the bus. The oneway ticket costs € 1.50 per
citizen when using any means of public transport, and is valid for 90 minutes,
which means you can use it right after the subway.
The bus stop is right outside the airport exit.
There are two bus lines 73 and 73X. The 73X is an express service that only
stops once before Piazza San Babila and takes a slightly different route from
73. Express only runs from Monday to Friday. However, both solutions are
costeffective and efficient, the 73 takes about 20 minutes, depending on the
time of day.
Line 73X from Linate to San Babila (metro line M1) departs first at 07:10, then
every twenty minutes until 19:50
Line 73 from Linate to San Babila, has an earlier departure time of 06:00,
the last at 01:07 There is additionally a private Airbus service, which takes you
directly to the central station, the cost is € 5 and can be purchased on board.
A taxi from Linate to the city center costs between € 10 and 20.
ORIO AL SERIO
The easiest way to get there is by shuttle bus from Central Station, on the right
side of the station.
There are two bus lines that offer a service on this route, the applicable tariff
is € 5. Sometimes there is also special offers.
Instead, a taxi to the center of Milan, takes about 45-60 minutes and costs
approximately € 100.

Airports and Stations
MALPENSA
The Malpensa Airport is larger than the Linate airport and has two terminals. All
easyJet flights depart from Terminal 2.
Usually, the most efficient and less stressful means of getting to the airport
is with the Malpensa Express; however, there is also a shuttle that can come
in handy depending on your destination city, the time of departure and the
terminal from which you leave.
The Malpensa Express train service directly connects Terminal 1 with Piazza
Cadorna (red line 1 subway stop Cadorna) or Stazione Centrale (Central
Station). The fastest option is Cadorna, which usually takes 29 minutes, while
for the central station are 52 minutes, with various stops.
An adult ticket costs € 11 to Cadorna station, with departures every 30 minutes
From Malpensa to Cadorna, earliest departure is 05:26, last at 23:28 From
Malpensa to Centrale, earliest departure is 06:35, last at 00:40
There are also some shuttles, private bus services. These are not so convenient
but might be useful if you leave from Terminal 2, so you will avoid making the
transfer to the train to Terminal 1. The shuttle takes only 15 minutes, but if you
prefer to arrive at the Central Station, the bus is much faster.

There are two shuttles that connect the airport where tickets can be bought
inside the terminal. We advise you to wait until you’re out of the airport to see
which bus is ready to go. The ticket costs € 10, and you can also buy it on
board. Usually there’s a bus every 20 minutes and the journey takes about an
hour.
To get there by taxi there is a fixed rate of € 90, it takes more than an hour,
depending on traffic. The price includes a single stop. If you want to make
other stops, you will be charged the normal rate and it could cost you a lot
more, so be careful!

Transportation
METRO
As for efficiency, the subway is usually unbeatable, especially for traveling
around the most important areas of the historic center.
During peak hours it can be a bit crowded, the most critical moments are from
07.30 to 09.30 and in the evening around 19:00. However, the frequency of
trains during those hours increases if a train is too crowded, the next will come
in a few minutes.
Unfortunately, the tube tends to slow down its service after 21:00 and runs
only a little after midnight but do not worry, there is a night bus replacement
service. To recognize them easily, bus stops nightclubs have an ‘N’ next to the
line number.
In the map shown, the dashed lines are currently under construction.
Here you’ll find instead what lines work at night, and the map on the night
service. - http://www.atmmi.it/it/ViaggiaConNoi/Pagine/Retenotturna.aspx

TRAM
The trams are a pleasant reminder of the past in Milan, as in many other
European cities, some really do seem very old. They may seem slow and noisy
but the elegant interior is really magnificent.
We strongly recommend lines 1 and 4 for an enjoyable sightseeing tour of
Milan.
BUS
Buses are generally used to reach outlying suburbs or to tour the city. Buses
run along the route of the ring roads around Milan.
Of particular interest are the trolley 90 and 91, which run along the main ring of
Milan, also at night.
BIKE SHARING
Another good way to get around this city is the bike. The bike path is currently
limited, but growing.
To have a daily or weekly pass you must register on the site and pay by credit
card. Alternatively, you can call the tollfree number 800808181 or contact an
ATM Point at the following metro stations: Duomo (M1M3) Cadorna (M1M2)
Loreto (M1M2) Romulus (M2) Central Railway (M2M3 ) Garibaldi FS (M2)
A day pass costs € 2.50, € 6 one week. The service is designed to take you
around the city, and not to rent a bike one day. Normally, you can take a bike
from one station to another and deliver it when you arrive at your destination.
The first 30 minutes are free, then the price goes up to € 0.50 per 30 minutes up
to a maximum of two hours. Exceeded 2 hours, the cost is € 2 per hour. Leaving
the bike in a station, the 30 free minutes will reset (may not be combined).

RAILWAY
Technically, the suburban railway, or ‘through’ is part of the regional rail network,
which carries passengers outside Milan.
In the city, there are however several stops that may be useful, depending on
your destination. This solution is also needed to reach the Polytechnic of Milan
Bovisa (stop Bovisa, or Villa Pizzone).
Here follows the map.

TAXI
Taxis are not exactly cheap in Milan and there is not much choice, apart from
a couple of private services. All taxis are registered with the local council and
also adhere to a consortium. Do not worry about the meter, it’s always running.
Taxi Blu
Phone 02 4040 or download the “app” the company is called “TaxiMilano.”
Yellow Taxi
Phone 02 6969 or download the “app” the company is called “IT Taxi”.
Taxi ilegal
There are also many taxis that are not registered with the government and
therefore illegal, offering a service especially during the night, leaving night
clubs in standard prices. We ask you to be wary of this type of transport.
CAR SHARING
The main service of the Milan Car Sharing is represented by the ‘App’ Enjoy.
Registration is free and you do through the site enjoy.eni.com, you know where
the cars are available through the app, and you can leave it once you get to
your destination. T
he cost is 1 € for 4 minutes, and the map identifies the nearest car to you, you
can book it and then you will have only 30 minutes to get there.

Certainly one of the first things to do when you arrive in Italy is purchase a sim
card!
You can choose between various telephone companies and, for each of them,
you can choose between “abbonamento” and “ricaricabile”
The subscription plans (abbonamento) are almost always longer than 12
months, so we suggest youl to opt for a rechargeable sim card (ricaricabile).
For further information, consult the websites of the companies (these are the
most commons):
- VODAFONE
- TIM
- WIND
These all offer tariff plans such as “all inclusive”, where with a fixed fee per
month you’ll have access to a certain amount of messages, phone calls and
GB for navigation.
HEALTH SERVICE
Foreign students can choose among different options of health insurance.
Please note that for nonEU students it is compulsory to hold a health insurance
(or a health insurance payment receipt) in order to apply for the residence permit.
The residence permit has the same validity in time of the health insurance.

compulsory, however it is warmly suggested because it entitles you to the
same treatment as Italian citizens including:

Hostels in the first days
HOSTELS
International students usually spend the first days in Milan to search an
apartment, but they have not a permanent accommodation to lean on during
the days of “research.”
An economic solution to spend the first few days in Milan, knowing new people,
not spending too much, is to book a room in a youth hostel.
With the ESN Card there are special discounts for international students who
wish to rent a room for a few nights.
If you’re looking for a place to meet new people, with whom begin the search
of the house, you can contact contact:
LAMBRATE HOSTEL: it’is in the Città Studi area, 5 minutes by walking from
Piazza Leonardo Da Vinci, and it’s one of the most frequented by the young
Erasmus
OSTELLO BELLO: it’s in the historic center, near the Duomo and is attended by
students who prefer to be closer to the monuments.
We recommend that you call before you come to Milan, in order to make sure
that there are places in these two structures affiliated with ESN! In September
there are many guys who need a room, move in advance!

Looking for a flat
HOUSE IN MILAN
Finding a place to live when you arrive is the first thing you need but unfortunatly
is the hardest to do. In Milan the renting market is skyrocketing and most of
the houses and flats in the center are impossible to get, especially for a person
with a limited budget like a student.
The price for the smallest flat (just a bedroom, with a little kitchen and a
bathroom) starts from € 700 and can get as expensive as possible getting
closer to the center of the city. That is why most of the students choose a
different and cheeper solution, which is to share an apartment with other
students or even to share a room.
In fact the price for a single room is at least € 500 and anyway it depends on
the location of the flat.
The price for a double room (a room shared by two persons) is at least € 350
and it raises as well depending on the location. You have to be carefull also if
the expences are included when you look at a price: usually the building and
heating expenses are included in the price, while electricity, gas and phone are
never included in the price.
It is also common that a deposit is asked at the beginning of the contract:
this amount of money is usually equal to three times the monthly rent and you
will get it back at the end of the contract.
One thing to be checked also is the length of the contract, which usually is 12
months while an exchange students is usually staying only 10 months, which
could be a problem.
Looking for a house through an agency may be too expensive. The agency
asks for a payment equal to approximately 10% of the annual rent. It’s better
to look for a house contacting the owners directly, which usually offer less
expensive apartments.

reclaimed any amount of money before seeing the apartment. Many students
are being cheated and forced to pay before arriving in Milan apartments for rent
that do not really exist!
Finding a home in Milan is not difficult, you just know how to look.

make sure that these apartments really exist.

Bank account and currency conversion
BANCHE ITALIANE
One of the needs that you might have during your period in Italy (especially for
those of you who comes from outside the EU and stops for a long time) is to
have a bank account in Italy.
Some banks (Banca Popolare di Sondrio, Unicredit, Banca Popolare di Milano)
offer the option to open bank accounts in EURO, even if you are not Resident
in Italy. moreover they will allow you to:

- To withdraw money from ATM / Debit Cards with no or reduced fees;
- Pay by credit card / ATM card with no or reduced fees;

Receive money from your family and pick them up directly via bank transfer in
EURO.
To open an account you will need:
- A valid identity document;
- A tax code;
- (Optional) residence in Italy to open a checking account for residents (usually
with better terms).
If you’ve just arrived and you come from a country where the currency is not
EURO current, you’ll need to change your currency. You can do this:
- At the airport when you arrive, usually with slightly higher fees, you should
change only the bare essentials;
- In the city (Piazza Duomo, central station, Garibaldi station, Cadorna station)
more calmly, without getting caught by the rush and changing only if the
change seems convenient.

ERASMUS STUDENT NETWORK
WHAT IS ESN?
Erasmus Student Network (ESN) is one of the biggest interdisciplinary
student associations in Europe.
The organization was born on the 16th of October 1989 (and legally registered
in 1990) to support and develop student exchange.
ESN is currently (June 2012) present in 397 Higher Education Institutions in
36 countries (Figure 1), annually offering services to over 150.000 students
on a volunteer basis.
The main focus of ESN is placed on current exchange students, who often
face problems and feel abandoned in their new environments.
ESN therefore offers help in the academic, social and practical integration
process. This is mainly done through activities in the local sections, which
include cultural and social events such as trips to various places within
the country, film nights, courses, buddy groups, language projects and
international food evenings and parties.

ESN Politecnico Milano
WHAT’S ESN POLITECNICO MILANO?
The Erasmus Student Network Politecnico Milano is a nonprofit, apolitical
association of students founded in 1992. Its aim is to support the student
exchange programs, supplying information and any kind of help that can be
voluntarily given by its members. ESN Politecnico is member of the Italian
network, ESN Italia, and of the international one, ESN International, since
December 1994.
Our goals are:
- improving the social integration of foreign students at the host institution
- providing more adequate information about exchange programmes
- taking advantage of exchange students’ experience by making them active
in the network
- continuously contributing to the evaluation of the European exchange
programmes based on the experiences of former exchange students. In
order to pursue these goals during the academic semesters of every year,
ESN organizes cultural trips around Italy, guided visits to the most famous
monuments in Milan, a design competition, conferences and parties in
various clubs almost every day of the week.
Our organization:
The services and activities are granted completely by the volunteer work
of a certain number of active members, mostly Italian students come back
from an exchange program. The board is composed by 5 members, who
organize periodical meetings with the assembly of the members. There are
also periodical national meetings (Piattaforme Nazionali, PN) while there is
only an international assembly general meeting (AGM) per year.
