As we come to a close of
another year, we must prepare for another Michigan
winter. Let’s hope Mother
Nature is kind to us this
year.
Esther Beaudette
Are you ready for the busiest month of the year? I
know our senior group has
two busy fun days back to
back. December 2nd is our
monthly meeting followed
by our Christmas party. A
paid ticket is needed to attend this party.
December 3rd is our trip to
the Fisher Theater to see
the Jersey Boys, followed
by a delicious meal at Mario’s Restaurant. Everyone who purchased a ticket
for this event should be at
the IACS parking lot at 11
We will miss all our Snowbirds, who winter in warmer climates; have a safe
warm winter, and we will
look forward to seeing you
in the Spring.
Looking ahead to 2016, we
will be keeping busy with
many day trips of different
ideas. I hope there will be
ideas to make you happy.
Our first trip will be Saturday, February 27th. Our
day will begin with lunch
at Sin Bad Restaurant, followed by a trip to Caesar
Windsor Casino with time
to gamble and free tickets
to see “Menopause the Musical”. Cost is $35. Proper I.D. is needed. Our bus
will leave the IACS at 11
a.m.
Our second trip will be
March 23rd. We will go
to Meadowbrook Theater.
Our first stop will be a tour
of the Mansion, followed
by lunch and next stop see
the play, “Calendar Girls”.
This trip is $72 complete.
Times for departure will be
forthcoming.
Another idea being worked
on is a Detroit City Tour
with many famous land
marks and lunch at the
Whitney Mansion.
Your wishes and ideas are
always welcome to look
into for trips.
Be sure to vote for the
IACS Board of Directors.
Your ballot will be sent to
you by mail. Please remember when voting that
senior representation on
the board is always a good
thing! Election results will
be announced at our annual
meeting on Sunday, January 17, 2015.

various regions. In the Summer of 2008, Comites invited
Anthony to attend a young

tory to give me your vote
and your support. I have
had the great honor of being named “Woman of the
Year” by the Columbus
Day Celebration Committee. I truly believe in the
IACS and will always work
wherever I am needed.
I believe one of my greatest qualities is my belief if
you take a job, always do it
to the best of your ability.
At the present time, I plan
and take our seniors on day
trips and some overnighters. I make each senior
monthly meeting exciting
and fun to attend.
I am a wife, mother, grandmother, and a great grandmother. So, you see, my
life is full, but I do believe
I am an asset to the IACS
Board of Directors.
I have been an active
member for 20 years. I
have served on the Board
of Directors for more than
18 years. I have been the
senior chairperson for 12
years, in two different
terms. Some of my past
chairpersonships
have
been ticket chairperson for
our annual raffle held each
July during the Italian Festival – working three days
each year. I was chairperson for the IACS celebration of our 50 th Anniversary. I work every year at
Festa della Repubblica. I
have chaired many successful wine tasting parties held at our Cultural
Center. I am also active in
my church. I have been a
volunteer for fundraisers
at Macomb Center for the
Performing Arts.
I have run my own business successfully for 44
years.

addition, we raised the funds
for the beautiful gazebo that

My goal would be to see the
Italian American Cultural

cultural hub in the Italian
community.
I would like to continue my
involvement in the Italian

Giovanni Lo Iacono (I)
Giovanni Lo Iacono is

IACS Board of Directors
since 2005.
For the past 10 years as an
IACS officer and director,

Giovanni Maniaci
I have been involved with
the IACS Gioventù since
we formed the group back in
February. In these past few
months I have been honored
to be in a group that has
raised money to help build
a pergola in memory of a
good friend of mine. With
our help, we were also able
to get new speakers for the
IACS. I would love to be
involved here and seek many
more positive changes for the
Center, such as improvements,
new events, etc. I am open
to suggestions to make
everyone’s
experience
here a happy one. I value
everyone’s opinion. This is
your home and we should
all feel welcome here. It is
because of you, the members,
that this place is still going
strong, and it must continue
to instill the old traditions as
well as new ones. I have been
married to my wife Rosanna
for seventeen years. We have
three children. I have been
in the construction business
for over twenty years. As a
skilled mason I have worked
on many projects in the metro
Detroit area. I lived half of
my life in Italy and proudly
served in the Italian navy for
two years as head cook for
the commander of my ship.
During that time I visited
many places in the world and
saw many things. I speak
English, Italian, Spanish, and
Italian American Cultural Society
and volunteering, and seeing
people happy makes me
happy. I would love to see
some hands-on activities
such as learning how to make
traditional foods. I think it
would be great to see other
classes offered here in addition
to the Italian language classes.
There are so many things that
we can learn about our heritage
– the possibilities are endless!
I value your opinion and am
always open to suggestions.
Thank you.
Rosanna Maniaci
My name is Rosanna

with the IACS last February
when my dad Giovanni
LoIacono asked me to get
some friends together to help
support the Seafood dinner
they were having. It wasn’t
the first time I was here; in
fact I had been here plenty of
times in the past. But when
I looked around I was in awe
at how many people were
there having a great time!
It was then I realized the
place’s potential for keeping
our Italian traditions alive.
We all joined the IACS and
formed a sub-group, much
like the Seniors. We decided
to be the IACS Gioventù,
where we can meet with our
children and have fun, while
collaborating on ways to raise
money for the IACS. In the
past nine months we have
done some exciting things
and I feel great about all that
has been accomplished. I am
very proud of my heritage and
want my children to learn all
the things I was taught. Just

On November 6 the IACS

chaired this year’s event.
Chef Alex Lozovoj and his
crew outdid themselves,
serving appetizers of

These were
followed by a family style
dinner featuring smoked

pheasant, buffalo osso
bucco, salad, fingerling

disparità di trattamento
nei confronti degli italiani
residenti all’estero. Crede
di poter fare qualcosa per
far valere i diritti degli
italiani nel mondo?
Io mi sono spesa più volte,
con gli strumenti legislativi
che ci sono propri, per cercare
di ottenere gli sgravi Imu
anche per gli iscritti Aire,
purtroppo non riuscendo
ancora ad ottenere risultati
concreti se non l’impegno
del Governo ad affrontare
la questione. In occasione
dell’esame della stabilità
alla Camera riproporrò
il tema della disparità di
trattamento degli italiani
all’estero, ma spero che la
cosa possa risolversi anche
prima, in Senato. Dal canto
mio sto sensibilizzando i
colleghi dell’altro ramo
del Parlamento sul tema e
spero proprio che il loro
impegno abbia successo. In
caso contrario riproporrò,
assieme al mio Gruppo
parlamentare,
questo
problema nell’Aula di
Montecitorio. Comunque,
devo sottolineare che in
Italia manca una conoscenza
delle problematiche degli
italiani all’estero ed ho
capito che c’è molto da
lavorare su questo, cosa che
sto facendo ma che richiede
ancora tempo affinché gli
italiani all’estero siano
veramente percepiti come
parte essenziale del Sistema
Italia da tutto il Parlamento.
Diffusione della lingua
e della cultura italiana
nel mondo. In questa
manovra economica si
tolgono 3,5 milioni di euro
proprio al capitolo della
lingua e cultura italiana
all’estero,
eppure
il
sottosegretario agli Affari
Esteri e alla Cooperazione
Internazionale,
Mario
Italian American Cultural Society
Giro, al termine degli
Stati
Generali
della
lingua italiana nel mondo,
a Firenze, ha detto:
“Occorre fare in modo
che la promozione della
nostra lingua sia un tema
di rilievo nel Paese, nella
politica e nel Parlamento:
la lingua italiana non è
una materia residuale”.
Qual è la sua posizione a
riguardo?
Concordo
pienamente
con
il
Sottosegretario
Giro ed il mio impegno
va proprio nella direzione
di contribuire a rafforzare
la promozione linguistica
come espressione della
nostra diplomazia culturale.
Abbiamo un soft power che
è costituito dalla bellezza
della lingua di Dante che
dovremmo usare meglio ed
in maniera più efficace. In
questo senso ritengo che la
promozione linguistica sia
veramente parte essenziale
del Sistema Italia nel mondo,
ma dobbiamo lavorare per
definire strumenti chiari ed
evidenti di certificazione
dell’insegnamento
e
dell’apprendimento
che
siano
universalmente
riconosciuti.
Certamente
i tagli non aiutano. Io
mi opporrò a questo, ma
siamo chiamati anche a
trovare strumenti nuovi ed
efficaci in una prospettiva
di collaborazione pubblicoprivato. Per quanto concerne
i tagli previsti nella stabilità
contenuti all’art. 33, a cui
fa riferimento, ho chiesto
al collega Romano, del
Senato, di presentare un
emendamento che annulli
tali tagli. Speriamo che
passi l’esame del Senato,
altrimenti lo ripresenterò
alla Camera.
Il presidente del Consiglio
Renzi in passato ha detto
che “c’è grande voglia
di Italia nel mondo”
eppure quando si tratta
di finanziare investimenti
in questo ambito sembra
girarsi dall’altra parte.
Sente di confermare la
sua appartenenza alla
lista “Per l’Italia” che
sostiene un governo che,
nel concreto, sembra
disinteressarsi
alle
comunità italiane oltre
confine e alla diffusione
della nostra cultura la
quale, nel lungo periodo,
significherebbe alimentare
il Sistema Paese nel
mondo?
Io e il Gruppo “Per l’Italia”
stiamo
lavorando
per
diffondere quel valore che
le nostre comunità all’estero
possono rappresentare per il
nostro sistema paese, con
particolare attenzione alla
promozione del “made in
PAGINA 7
L'Italo Americano
Italy” e della scuola italiana
all’estero. Ma non basta,
dobbiamo essere ancora più
incisivi affinché il Governo
sostenga
concretamente
tale ricchezza. Per questo
motivo sto coinvolgendo
anche i colleghi di altri
schieramenti ad incontrare
le nostre comunità così da
raggiungere l’obiettivo in
modo trasversale. Senza gli
italiani all’estero siamo una
Italia a metà. Sono convinta
che con l’affermarsi della
consapevolezza di ciò che ha
rappresentato e rappresenta
l’emigrazione per l’Italia
sapremo costruire adeguate
politiche migratorie in
grado di rendere il nostro
Paese ancora più bello e più
grande.
