THE FINAL STANDINGS FOR FISCAL
2012.
What an amazingly exciting end to the competition, resulting in a winner, JOSEPH NOVELLO, but
with three others tied for second place. We nearly
had a four-way tie, but Joe managed to score three
points in his final partita, while the other three could
manage only two points apiece!
Joe and his wife Joanne plan to be at the Annual
Briscola Awards Luncheon on April 21 to receive his
trophy, this year a little taller than usual.
The three-way tie for second place honors included: Roberto Severino, Eustachio Tortorelli
and Antonio Volpe. They, also, will be receiving
trophies. Several Certificates are also being prepared for distribution. However, this year no one
socio has qualified for the coveted Premio di Incoraggiamento.

Regarding the fourth anniversary of the terremoto
acquilano, Lucio had sent me the following memorial
written by GOFFREDO PALMERINI, who is a prolific
author, who has written articles and books on Abruzzo
and L'Aquila. Since many of our briscolani hail from that
part of Italy, I thought it would be interesting for you to
read.
Cari Amici nel mondo,
ci prepariamo, noi Aquilani, a commemorare il Quarto anniversario del terremoto dell'Aquila, la cui punta disastrosa si
ebbe nella notte tra il 5 e 6 aprile, alle ore 3 e 32, il mattino
del Lunedì della Settimana Santa. Una delle più belle città
d'arte d'Italia devastata, insieme ai Borghi che le fanno
corona. 309 le vittime, molti i ragazzi e i giovani. Stasera una
S. Messa ricorderà le vittime, poi la mesta Fiaccolata che
attraverserà la città, toccando tutte le stazioni della nostra
Via Crucis. Molti i drammi, i problemi, le incertezze, i ritardi,
gli episodi squallidi, le promesse mancate, che ancora impastoiano la ricostruzione del centro storico dell'Aquila e dei
Borghi viciniori che hannoferito, ma non oscurato la bellezza
della straordinaria prova di affetto, generosità e solidarietà
delle migliaia di volontari che ci hanno aiutato nei mesi
dell'emergenza post sisma. A loro va la nostra gratitudine,
che mai potrà sbiadire, perché saranno sempre nel nostro
cuore. Per sempre! Ma oggi è il giorno della memoria, della
meditazione e del silenzio rispettoso e dignitoso verso le
nostre vittime. E' anche il giorno più intenso della vicinanza,
dell'amicizia e della solidarietà di tutti gli Italiani, dentro e
fuori i confini d'Italia, e di tutti i cittadini del mondo che ci
hanno voluto e ci vogliono bene, perché L'Aquila è ormai
patrimonio universale. Grazie di cuore per l'affetto, l'attenzione, la passione e la solidarietà che ci avete donato. Non lo
potremo mai dimenticare! Molti gli eventi commemorativi in
programma per questo 4° anniversario della tragedia.
Sarebbe lungo elencarli. Eccovi il video (autore Marceman

Messa di Requiem di G. Verdi, in ricordo delle vittime.

♥ NANCY’S NICHE

LA PASSATELLA
When Ennio Di Tullio was growing up in Rosello
(in Abruzzo), he used to look forward to the hardfought but friendly card games that were especially
memorable for what came afterward—La Passatella.
That’s when the players would draw cards—and the
player with the winning card was “il padrone” while the
one with the losing card was “il sotto.” The “padrone”
got to control the wine bottles and got to pick who
could drink the glasses of wine which he filled (unless
he chose to drink them all himself), while the unlucky
“sotto” could end up without a drop to drink. This
must have been a pretty big deal, because Ennio
recalls that when some players who emigrated to
America or Argentina would return home for a visit
years later—they would still remember who “did them
wrong”!! Not a grudge exactly—since it was all in the
spirit of good fun.
It turns out that La Passatella is a tradition going
back to ancient Roman times, when it was a game
with wine...and sometimes knives. In those days, the
game consisted of la Conta (drawing straws), il Padrone (the Master), il Sotto (the Under) and l’Ormo
(the Idiot, who never drank). The Ormo became the
laughinstock, humiliated among his peers, and sometimes things would get ugly with these sore losers.
Over time, Ormo came to mean “to be a naive victim
of a scam.” Who knew?

SWALLOWS AND SPRING (Huh?)
When the call went out to play some make-up
games at the home of Pino Cicala (recently recovered from surgery), the call was answered by Roberto
Severino, Omero Sabatini and Deno Reed. To
keep their strength up, Pino prepared pasta con piselli
(traditional Southern Italian fare). Omero reported
that he amazed himself by scoring higher than Pino
and Roberto Severino—both of whom are champions
many times over. But as Omero points out, “una
rondine non fa primavera” (one swallow does not
make it spring). So true!!
