Dear Parishioner,
Messiah. He didn’t say get ready to have
. The feast of the Nativity of our Lord is upon us. coming
a good time with family and friends. John the BapSoon we will gather in the Church, on Christmas
Eve and Christmas Day to celebrate this glorious
feast. Yet year after year we find ourselves poorly
prepared for this celebration. So what I want to
ask all of you is this;” ARE YOU READY FOR
CHRISTMAS”.
Normally when this question is asked we can
point to a number of things that would get us
ready for Christmas. Do we have our tree out and
decorated? Are all the decorations and lights
hung? Is our shopping completed? Did we send
our Christmas Cards? Did we wrap all the presents? Did we buy enough of food and drinks for
the Holiday? Did we invite all the family and
friends? It’s like in everything we do there is always the stage of level of preparation. I’m sure
everyone has a list like the one mentioned above,
and like a good manager we check off the list as
we go on. However, this is not what I am referring to when I asked this question? “ARE YOU
READY FOR CHRISTMAS”? I am referring to
the spiritual aspects of the season not the entertaining aspect.
In human terms, we are so prepared in our
lives to accept this Holiday season as a way to entertain ourselves with material things instead of
concentrating on the real issue here. It’s great to
have a good time, with family over for dinner,
being generous with our decorations, with the different variety of foods that your family will enjoy
this Holiday season. So much to see, so much to
do in just a short time. But we are forgetting
something very important that this whole Holiday
season is about one person, and that is celebrating the Birth of our Lord Jesus Christ. Did that
ever cross your mind? Remember the word
Christmas, It has the name of Christ, “who is with
us”. If you wanted to translate this word in Greek
it means the “Birth of Christ”.
So this so called Christmas Holidays is not all
about us, but it is about Christ. It is His birthday
that we are celebrating and not for our own selfish convenience. When John the Baptist came
into the picture he gave a message to all the
tist preaching in the desert of Judea, said; “Repent
for the Kingdom of heaven is near”. This is He
who was spoken of through the prophet Isaiah. “A
voice of one calling in the wilderness, “Prepare
the way of the Lord, and make straight paths for
Him. But people today even Christians when
asked “Are you ready for Christmas, they immediately think about the Christmas tree, the lights
and decorations, the shopping for gifts, and other
non essential items that have nothing to do with
this serious question? This question refers to,
“Are you producing the right fruit in keeping with
the word repentance.
To define the word repentance, it means that
we need to change our ways, in order to keep
from making the same mistakes that we do year
after year. We have gotten ourselves into a constant maze that we can’t get out of. We think
Christmas is to bring excitement and pleasure for
ourselves. If you think like that then you are not
truly celebrating Christmas in the right way. If we
read in Galatians 5: True confession and repentance leads to love, joy, peace, patience, kindness,
goodness, gentleness, faithfulness, and self control
flowing out of our lives.
How many of you have ever met a person who
called themselves a Christian and yet was mean,
bitter, unhappy, and unpleasant. Have we forgotten that Christmas is not primarily about us, our
family, friends, and buying presents. BUT IT IS
ABOUT CHRIST? Isn’t it easy to get wrapped up
in the celebration that we forgot what it is we are
supposed to be celebrating. We teach our children
every year about Santa Claus, about presents under the tree, about reindeers and having a good
time, but we forget what our true purpose of what
Christmas is all about. It’s about being with Jesus
on His birthday.
We have birthday parties for our children, our
parents, our relatives and friends, and we always
find the time to share the beautiful moments together. But when the Lord’s birthday comes evCONTINUED ON PAGE 4

MESSAGE FROM THE
PARISH PRESIDENT
MHNYMA TOY ¶ƒO∂¢ƒOÀ
Δ∏™ ∫Oπ¡OΔ∏Δ∞™
Dear Parishioners,
As the Christmas season is upon us,
I find myself reflecting on the past year
and realizing how truly grateful I am
for those individuals who have helped
shape my life, my family's life and the
life of St. Nicholas Church. Christmas
is a wonderful time to spread not only
good wishes, but also to spread the
word of the Lord.
And no one does that better than
our Sunday School volunteer staff.
And I emphasize “VOLUNTEER.”
These women and men dedicate their
Sundays to spreading the word of God.
It was evident this past Stewardship
Sunday, when a child shouted, "To
praise God!" when asked by our guest entertainer, Bubbles the Clown,
why the children were there that day. Goyans, Kristina Anastasiades
and Maria Reppas accompanied the children during Bubbles the Clown
magic show and balloon making. Kristina said, “It was amazing. I was
expecting the children to shout out, to get a balloon or to see a magic
show, but instead a little boy, shouted, ‘To praise God!’ So, Bubbles the
Clown made ‘Praise God’ their magic word whenever he did a magic
trick. It was so special.”
Seeing the smile on my daughter's face when she told me the story,
said it all. Our Sunday School volunteer staff is getting the message
across as to why we come to church, “To Praise God.” It is that simple.
So, during Advent, the period leading up to the birth of Christ, give
your problems to God, slow down, buy less presents and come to
church to praise God. Because without Christ, Christmas is just a hollow day.
May God's blessing shine down upon you and your family this
Christmas.
In Christ, Demos Anastasiades,
Parish Council President

DECEMBER 2015
Message from Fr. Michael L. Pastrikos, Protopresbyter
We need to get ready for the coming Messiah . . .
CONTINUED FROM PAGE 1
ery year most of us are never there to worship Him and to
thank Him for all the great things that are happening in our
lives. We like receiving the great gifts and blessings that the
Lord gives to us, but we never repay Him with our presence
at His home on Christmas Eve and Christmas day. Yes, we
can all give the excuse that the Christmas season is extremely
busy, filled with much care and running around to get everything that we need in order. But often not with much thought
for the One whose birth we will be celebrating on the 25th of
December.
Let us use this time and date wisely, concentrating on what
we are going to give to Christ on Christmas day. He doesn’t
want your wealth, but He would love it very much if we would
come to Church with our family and give Him the greatest
present meaning “You”. Let’s not forget that the Advent pe-
riod is a reminder that this feast is about a spiritual reality. Let
us make an effort by coming to Church on Christmas Eve, or
Christmas Day preparing to receive Holy Communion with
your family members. This is what Christmas is all about. It’s
not about us? It’s about Christ.
In closing, I hope and pray during this Holiday season that
we make the right choices and make the right decisions to correct our old ways. Let’s start our lives in Christ on the right
foot, and head to a course that will truly bring us love, joy,
and happiness. If we stay on this course, we will experience
and see many more Christmas futures. Just remember the
recipe; FASTING, PRAYER, ALMGIVING, SACRAMENTAL LIFE, AND FORGIVENESS……… Your final key that
will truly open the door to Paradise for everyone.
God Bless everyone, and may you have a Merry Christmas
and a Happy New Year.

STEWARDSHIP NEWS
Stewardship Message: "Those that seek the Lord shall never be in
want of any Good Thing"
This past Sunday, November 22, 2015 was Stewardship Sunday.
Thank you to those parishioners who were able to take off from
work, or took a break from Thanksgiving preparations or the
Ravens game to attend the luncheon. We were truly grateful.
This year's Stewardship theme is “those that seek the Lord shall
never be in want of any Good Thing,” «ŸÛÔÈ ·Ó·˙ËÙÔ‡Ó ÙÔÓ
∫‡ÚÈÔ, ‰ÂÓ ı· ¤¯Ô˘Ó ÔÙ¤ ·Ó¿ÁÎË ·fi οÙÈ Î·Ïfi.» The meaning
of this year theme is simple: God wants us, His children, to do our
best and leave the rest to him; to put our faith in him and not in
ourselves; to give him our problems and trust in Him. Stop following the Kardashians and start following Jesus Christ. The Bible
shares many stories where the people following Jesus put their
faith in Him and He performed miracles.
Father Michael with the aid of the Stewardship Committee is
seeking to help all of us develop a more personal and meaningful
relationship with God. His Second Letter to the Corinthians (9 &
10) teaches us clearly, “He who sows bountifully will also reap
bountifully.” God blesses those who give with generosity.
Giving generously with whatever we have; a beautiful voice to
serve in the choir, patience with children to serve as a Sunday
School teacher or aide, a strong character and sound mind to lead
a ministry, a good ear to listen to your child as he share his day or
a strong shoulder for friend to cry on. Whatever talent you posses, give generously.

Sowing the seeds of our devotion to Christ and sharing the good
news of Jesus Christ may be difficult; it may be discouraging when a
friend or classmate makes fun of you or calls you a "holy roller."
But the Apostles and the Christians in the Middle East were not
deterred.
To help us in our journey, the Stewardship Committee is giving
out The Ten Point Program For Orthodox Life booklet in both
Greek and English during the next upcoming Sundays. There are
enough booklets for each family, so please take one per family.
Our speaker on Stewardship Sunday was GOYA Basketball
Coach John Palas. His message was inspiring and up-lifting. John is
a person who exemplifies the meaning of giving generously. For
those of you who do not know, John, he is the GOYA Boys A team
basketball coach and even though he commutes everyday from his
home in Baltimore County to his work in Washington, D.C. , he still
gives of his time generously to the GOYA boys basketball program.
With that being said, a big thank you should be given to all the
GOYA Coaches, John Palas, Sam Glava, Sophia Gerapetritis,
Despina Moniodis, and Anna Maria "Beba" Diakokomninos as well
as to all the GOYA advisors and parents. For without you, there
would be no GOYA ministry.
Wishing you a blessed Christmas.

A Message from Coach John Palas, Featured Speaker at the
Stewardship Luncheon Held on Sunday, November 22, 2015
For those of you who don’t know me, my name is John Palas
and I am one of the GOYA basketball coaches at the church. I
am honored to have the chance to speak to you today.
At first I hesitated to accept. There are so many people more
deserving than me to have the chance to speak to you about
stewardship, and we are very lucky to have those people in our
parish. After much thought, I realized that so many people do
so much for our church, the least I could do is talk for a few minutes.
I was asked to come and speak to you from the heart, nothing
more, nothing less. So that’s what I am going to do. I want to
talk to you about what our kids did for me, what I see our programs do for our kids, and why it is important to continue to
focus on our kids.
Most of you see me helping at the festival or working at the
many dances we have. Nothing special, nothing above and beyond, unlike many of the other people in this room that dedicate
their valuable time and expertise, until two (2) years ago.
In August 2013, I lost my father. He was relatively short in
stature, but for me he was the tallest man. He was and will always be my role model. His passing was the darkest time of my
life.
About a week after I returned from his resting place in NY, I
was approached by the GOYA advisors requesting that I help
Sam Glava coach one of the teams. I had no intentions of doing
so. I was a mess, far away from my mother and brother. I
wanted to be left alone to deal with my pain.
But God is almighty. He must have enlisted the help of my
wife, Katina. Now those of you who know my wife, know she
doesn’t take no for an answer too easily. For about a week she
would be in my ear saying, “Yianni, you love basketball, Yianni,
you’ve played organized ball for so many years, you know the
game so well and you like the kids, but most importantly this
church needs you to serve!” So I reluctantly said yes and gave
my commitment for only one year.
I can honestly say that along with my family, it was our
GOYA kids that helped me get through the roughest time in my
life. They did more for me than I could ever do for them. And
for that I owe my eternal gratitude to them. I will always be there
for them. Our kids made me feel alive again, a part of a team
again, not since my team in college. I felt that I belonged to
something worthwhile. Seeing our kids succeed is pure joy. I
truly love our kids.
After a short time in GOYA, I realized how important it was
teach them the importance of representing their church with the
utmost respect in whatever they do and to make their parents
and their church proud.
Now it’s not easy, our boys are a handful as some of you
know. Our girls, on the other hand are angels, always representing St. Nicholas well with such class. We should all be so very
proud of them. But the boys, well, they will test the advisors, the
coaches and their teachers’ nerves and patience, but we need to
remember that they are mistake prone and that we, as elders of
the church, must show patience and constantly steer them in the
right direction. I know you have heard the phrase “it takes a village to raise a child.” Nothing of true value comes easy. Remember nothing of true value comes easy.
Why the glass case in the atrium with the athletic trophies, the
academic awards, the pictures, the friendships, the service members? They are there to show all of those accomplishments of
our parish in hopes that it will be carried on to our children’s
children. It shows how proud we are.
A case in point, our boys were in their first championship
game in over 10 years. We were in a room and I told them to
look at each other and I said, “Give each other you’re all, your
unselfish play, for 32 minutes and you will be talking about this
moment 32 years from now. I didn’t say it just to get them ready
to win a championship, I said it for them to understand the importance and opportunity that GOYA has given them to accomplish a bond that they will carry for life. I want them to one day
walk up the steps of St Nicholas, point to a trophy case and tell
their kids that’s what Daddy was a part of and soon it will be your
turn, my child.
GOYA basketball, Golden Coins, Ellinakia, Greek school,
they are the hooks to get our children involved with the church.
A bond with the church is built that will carry on for the rest of
their lives.
These programs made me realize the importance of the youth
in our church and the big hearts that so many of us have making
their youth memorable in order for them to make it memorable
for their children.
Some of our children will graduate, and go off to school. But
most will go on to raise their kids the same way they were raised
here in Saint Nicholas.
My heart opens up when I see the GOYA graduates come
back to visit us such as Argyri Stakias, Niko Roros, Kosta
Orfanos, Manoli Giorgakis, Yianni Charalambopoulos,
Protopapas, George Karayiannopoulos, and Kosta Loukas. I
know they are good kids raised in the church, and I want the best
for them.
As for our seniors Antonis Araviakis, George Topouzoglou,
Kosta Atsidis, Nick Argetakis, Arkdiusz Gluszcz, we have done
a lot of good things together. You guys along with Kosta
Stavrakis, Mehali Argetakis and Dean and Andonis, the Palas
boys are my core. You helped me get through the saddest days
of my life. You, young men, just don’t know what you mean to
me. Thank you.
All you young people must understand you also have responsibilities in this church. Whether it’s altar, choir, Sunday school,
Greek Dance, or helping at social events. By assisting where
needed, you will bring up the energy and enthusiasm level of the
whole church. You will motivate us to work harder to make our
parish great.
You see raising our kids in the church is the gift we must pass
on to each generation. You may not ?fully understand it now,
but you will one day.
With that said, under the leadership the last few years of Father Michael, Taki Papadopoulos, Demos Anastasiades and the
board, so many of us are excited with the positive changes that
have come about ?with our church.
The Plateia has come a long way, our Greek School has excellent teachers and attracts kids from all over, our gym is remodeled, and we’ve seen a noticeable uptick in youth enrollment
across the board.
But again, nothing of true value comes easy. We are all so
blessed to be a part of Saint Nicholas. You will not find many
churches outside of NY, Chicago or Tarpon that brings ?you the
true Greek Orthodox experience that our church brings. Thank
you, Father Michael.
You see parishioners from other churches bring their kids
here for Greek school or attend our church ?during Easter or
Christmas. Ask yourselves why. We don’t have the best facilities or the most room, or even ample parking. But we all know
why they come here.

A Message from Coach John Palas, Featured Speaker at the
Stewardship Luncheon Held on Sunday, November 22, 2015
CONTINUED FROM PAGE 9
I wasn’t raised in this church, I’m a New Yorker. But I married the love of my life here 20 years ago ?this month and have
raised our family in this church. We live far away from my work
in order for my family and I to continue to worship here. Why?
Because this church and the families that belong to this church
are a jewel.
That is why we all need to be here for our children and our
church. If we do not make programs available such as GOYA,
Greek school, Sunday school, Greek dance and all the wonderful
things the church offers not only for our children but our elderly,
the chances are slim that our children will do it for their children
and their elderly and where does that leave our wonderful church
years from now.
The other day, I was driving my son Andoni to school, he was
quiet didn’t say much, so I asked him why asked him why so
quiet. He said, “Dad, I’m thinking of Mr. Rossi, and how beautiful his voice is, I grew up listening to him, and I’m sad he is
gone.” A 14 year old boy who will forever remember a humble
man who brought his dedication and talents to our church. Now
we don’t all have the voice of Mr. Rossi, but we can all have his
dedication to our church.
The people who take on the rough waves of keeping this
church strong are special. Some of us realize it ?and help as much
as we can, but all of us that benefit from Saint Nicholas must realize it and help as much as we can.
Thank you, Happy Thanksgiving, Merry Christmas, health
and happiness to us all.
Coach John Palas
