June is a special month for us when we all come together to support our church and share our faith traditions, culture, delicious Greek food, music and dances with our fellow neighbors and friends. This year, our Festival will extend from the front of our church, along Ponca Street and end at our Greektown Square and Event Center. This expanded location will accommodate more people and spotlight two beautiful edifices—Our Church and our Center. I would like to give thanks to many at this time— — to our Almighty God, who has been shepherding us in our Faith and strengthening us in our plans to promote His Word through the Church. ¥ to our spiritual leader, Rev. Father Michael L. Pastrikos for the faith he has placed in us today and for his willingness to lead us onto the road of salvation; ¥ to all volunteers who have given their time, talent and treasure every day for the growth and continuation of our St. Nicholas Church; ¥ special BIG THANK YOU to the individuals who have continued to plan and work daily for the success of our Greek Folk Festival. Our volunteers range from the women who have worked tirelessly to prepare the home made food and pastries that everyone loves; ¥ to the advisors and leaders of our ministries: GOYA, JOY, PTA, Sunday School, Hellenic Golden Coins, Ta Ellinakia, Ladies Philoptochos Society, Stewardship Committee, Entertainment Committee, Plateia Planning Committee, Diamonds, Ladies and United Chios Societies, the Rhodian Society and many more who never say, “no” when asked for their assistance: ¥ to my fellow brothers and sisters on the Parish Council who have been by my side helping and guiding me as Parish Council President: ¥ to our church secretary, sexton, cantor, assistant cantors, organist, church choir, altar boys, and the teaching staff of our Greek School for their dedication and zeal in preserving our Greek language and culture; ¥ to the many community businesses and individuals who sponsor our Festival program booklet and to those who not only support us this weekend, but throughout the year. This support allows us to share our faith and culture with those outside our community, but more importantly, helps us to expand our ministries within our church to our youth and elderly. Again, thank you all for your continued generosity. Most of all, to you for joining us during this festival. We are sure that you will love sharing and celebrating our Greek culture, food, pastries and drinks as well as our famous hospitality. Kalo Glendi! Have a Great Time! People with real faith cannot be stopped from finding a way to be with Jesus Christ. We all find ways to be with the people we love. There is a famous saying: “Where there is a will…. there is a way!” Living a sinful life is always the infection of impurity. Sin will take the innocent heart and make it a guilty heart. It will take a pure mind and make it impure. Have you been paying attention to what’s surrounding you everyday? Is this the example that we want to expose our children to? We as parents have to make these important decisions. We all realize that Sin is a behavior against the will of God and that Temptation will always be around us making us feel terrible about the sinful acts we do daily. In our Orthodox experience learning theology or reading a good book means very little. It must be lived! We must live our faith in Christ. Words can only move us or touch us emotionally, but action is the right verb to get you in the presence of God. We all need to be like the friends who brought the paralytic to Christ. They portrayed the true spirit of Christianity. The greatest gift we can give to a person who has no faith related religion is to bring them to Christ. Many will say, that is the priest’s job. But the truth of the matter is that this is everyone’s responsibility. Don’t always blame the priest, or the Parish Council for the lack of your participation, because we are always trying to find excuses or blame someone else for our failure to come to church. There is a story from the desert Fathers that a monk picked up a rock and said: “If this rock could heal people would you put it in your pocket or attempt to touch as many people as possible with it? The answer was…yes. The monk went on to say that the rock symbolizes Christ and that we should touch as many people as possible with Christ’s Love. I hope and pray that this article has touched you in some way. We have a Community to run and this cannot be done by just a few parishioners. We must all pitch in and help, that way we can also say that through the efforts of many, our church and parish has grown to what it is today: a safe haven for our children; an institution for learning; a place where we can call home and visit anytime we feel like it. I look forward to seeing you and your families in church more frequently in the coming months and years. ª‹Ó˘Ì· ·Ô ÙÔÓ ¶·Ù¤Ú· ªÈ¯·‹Ï §. ¶·ÛÙÚÈÎfi, ¶ÚˆÙÔÚÂÛ‚‡ÙÂÚÔ E∫∫§∏™π∞™ªO™ ™À¡∂Ã∂π∞ A¶O Δ∏¡ ™∂§π¢∞ 2 ·Ï¤˜ ÂÚˆÙ‹ÛÂȘ, Â›Ó·È Ô ÌfiÓÔ˜ ÙÚfiÔ˜ Ó· ·Ó·ÏÔÁËÛÙԇ̠ÙÔ Ì¤ÁÂıÔ˜ Ù˘ ›ÛÙ˘ Ì·˜ ÛÙÔ £Âfi. ¡·È, ÌÔÚ› οÔÈÔ˜ Ó· ÈÛ¯˘ÚÈÛÙ› fiÙÈ Â›Ó·È ıÚ‹ÛÎÔ˜, fiÙÈ ˙ÂÈ ÌÈ· ˙ˆ‹ Ì Â͈ÙÂÚÈΤ˜ ÂıÈÌÔÙ˘›Â˜, ·ÎfiÌË fiÙÈ ÙÔ fiÓÔÌ¿ ÙÔ˘ Â›Ó·È ÛÙÔ Ù·¯˘‰ÚÔÌÈÎfi ηٿÏÔÁÔ Ù˘ ÂÎÎÏËÛ›·˜, ‹ fiÙÈ ÛÙ¤ÏÓÂÈ ÙËÓ ÂÈÙ·Á‹ ÙÔ˘ ÁÈ· Ó· ϤÂÈ fiÙÈ Â›Ó·È Ì¤ÏÔ˜ Ù˘ ÂÎÎÏËÛ›·˜, ·ÏÏ¿ fiÏ· ·˘Ù¿ ‰ÂÓ ÛËÌ·›ÓÔ˘Ó Ù›ÔÙ ·Ó ‰ÂÓ ˙ÂȘ ÌÈ· ˙ˆ‹ Ì ›ÎÂÓÙÚÔ ÙËÓ ›ÛÙË, Ô˘ ʤÚÂÈ ÙÔ˘˜ ηÏÔ‡˜ ηÚÔ‡˜ ÙÔ˘ ∞Á›Ô˘ ¶Ó‡̷ÙÔ˜. ∏ Ú·ÁÌ·ÙÈ΋ ›ÛÙË ‰ÂÓ ÂÌÔ‰›˙ÂÙ·È, ‚Ú›ÛÎÂÈ ÙÚfiÔ Ó· Â›Ó·È Ì·˙› Ì ÙÔÓ πËÛÔ‡ ÃÚÈÛÙfi. ¶¿ÓÙÔÙ ‚Ú›ÛÎÔ˘Ì ÙÚfiÔ˘˜ Ó· ›̷ÛÙ ̷˙› Ì ÙÔ˘˜ ·ÓıÚÒÔ˘˜ Ô˘ ·Á·Ô‡ÌÂ. COMMUNITY NEWS ✧ ∫Oπ¡OΔπ∫∞ ¡∂A Greektown CDC A message from Colonel John E. Gavrilis, CEO We would like to thank Senator Bill Ferguson who took time out of his busy schedule to meet with our Board. The Senator discussed new legislation that affects our community. For a copy of the information discussed please call our office. Latin Quarters Bar, 646 Newkirk Street, requested a transfer of ownership of their license. The request was denied. Our office along with other stakeholders opposed the transfer of license for Latin Quarters. Working together we can make a difference! Please be aware construction has begun at 4700 Eastern Avenue, on the sidewalk, to fix our streetlight power outage. The decorative brickwork will be replaced upon completion of the project. We are inquiring with the City and from CSX some relief from train horn blasts that are disturbing residents. We will be requesting a designated Quiet Zone for Greektown. Primary Election Day is June 24, 2014! Please make time to vote! As a reminder, the City has begun a new mechanical street sweeping program. Odd sides of the streets will be swept on the 1st Wednesday of the month. Even sides of the streets will be swept on the 2nd Wednesday of the month. To enable the most thorough sweeping your vehicles must be moved from the street from 8am – 4pm. Please visit the City’s website http://cityview.baltimorecity.gov for more information. As always, we look forward to the annual Saint Nicholas Greek Folk festival this month! This is one of our greatest community events that showcases some of the best aspects of our church, culture and community. We are proud to participate and thank all the volunteers who make this great event a success. We encourage all of our residents to dial 911 immediately when witnessing suspicious or criminal activity. Call 311 or submit your request online at www.baltimorecity.gov use the “request service” icon for non-emergencies and to request City services (trash, zoning, liquor board, etc.). Visit and venerate Christendom’s most sacred sites. See where Jesus spent most of his life and performed the many miracles you have read about in the Bible. Visit the cities of Jerusalem, Bethlehem, Nazareth, Capernaum, and Tiberias! Among the many sites and churches you will see are the Church of the Holy Sepulcher, the Church of St. Anne and the Pools of Bethesda, the Tomb of the Virgin Mary, the Prison of Christ (Praitorion), the Church of the Holy Apostles and the Church of the Transfiguration on Mt. Tabor. Take the cable car up to the Mt. of Temptation Monastery and see the rock that Jesus actually prayed by. Visit the Church of the Nativity and touch the spot where Christ was born! Among the other sites you will see are the Church of Tabgha, Cana, the Church of the Annunciation, the Garden of Agony, the Monastery of St. Gerasimos Iordanitis, Lazarus’ Tomb, Church of St. Elisseos and Zacchaeus Tree. Take a boat-ride on the Sea of Galilee and experience a spiritual baptism in the River Jordan. Enjoy a private audience with Patriarch Theophilos III (subject to his availability) and attend midnight Liturgy at the Holy Sepulcher. TURKEY CONSTANTINOPLE: Our pilgrimage will take us to Constantinople, the heart of Orthodoxy. Visit the seventeenth-century Greek Orthodox Ecumenical Patriarchate. Pray at the St. George Cathedral and venerate the Holy Relics of St. Gregory the Theologian and St. John Chrysostom. Participate in a private audience with His All Holiness Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew (subject to his availability). Visit the most important sites for the Greek Orthodox in Constantinople: Agia Sophia, the Church of the Holy Savior of Chora, Baloukli Monastery and its Underground Shrine of Zoodochos Peghe, Topkapi Palace, which houses the relics of St. John the Baptist, Panagia Blacherna, where the beautiful hymn “Te Ypermacho” was chanted over 1,400 years ago, and the Grand Bazaar. PONTUS: Visit the area of Pontus, on the shores of Turkey’s Black Sea and in the Pontic Alps, where Greeks once lived. The Pontic Greeks had a continuous presence in the region of Pontus (modern-day northeastern Turkey), Georgia, and northeastern Anatolia from at least 700 BC until 1922. Like Armenians, Assyrians, and other Ottoman Greeks, the Greeks of Trapezounta suffered widespread massacres and what is now usually termed ethnic cleansing at the beginning of the twentieth century, first from the Young Turks and later from Kemalist forces. Visit the historic monastery of Panagia Soumela near Trapezounta, on the mountains rising up on the south coast of the Black Sea. In 2010 the Turkish government allowed Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew to preside at the first historic liturgy there in eighty-eight years. According to tradition, the Monastery of Panagia Soumela was established in AD 386 by the Athenian monks Barnabas and Sofronios on the steep cliffs of Mount Melas, south of the city of Trapezounta (Trabzon) and has for sixteen centuries been the symbol of the Hellenism of Pontus.
