KOINONIA JANUARYπ∞¡OÀ∞ƒπO™ 2015 Message from Fr. Michael L. Pastrikos, Protopresbyter WHAT ARE WE GOING TO DO FOR 2015? "LIVE YOUR FAITH" Here we are again, a New Year has begun, and we are still thinking of making new resolutions, when in fact we never fulfilled last year’s resolutions. I heard a person tell me, that he will never make another New Year’s resolution anymore, because he never keeps them. I can remember all too many resolutions I’ve made and let slip away too. But I still believe that New Year’s resolutions are worth making. Why? Because we need change in our lives. I’ve heard people say, that they have no regrets about their life. If they had to do it over, they would do the same thing. But that is not a healthy attitude to take. During our lives we suffer failures and successes. We have a lot to confess when we say that everything is satisfactory or excellent in our lives. Owing up to our failures is the first, painful step on the road to something better. We can reminisce and look back in time on what happened to us last year. I’m sure there are positive as well as negative reactions concerning what we experienced throughout last year’s events. In this 2015 New Year, we need to bring a joyous and fresh attitude to our daily activities. Forget all the errors and misfortunes that happened last year, and start anew, bringing the Lord Jesus Christ into the forefront of our lives. This is what is missing in our lives, the opportunity to grow in Christ. Let me ask a serious question. What percentage of your life is producing something of value to God? There is always room for evaluation and reassessment. We need to ask ourselves? How did last year go? What do I want to do differently this year? What are the pros and cons? Look at the past year and see where you failed, and where you succeeded. Coming into a new year is the right time for corrections. Sure, we might fail in what we set out to do, but if we fail to plan, then we plan to fail. If you’re so fearful of failure then you’re never going to find success. Failure is not the end. For the person who determine to learn from it, failure is a friend. If we need to succeed first we need to be right with God, and we need to correct our old ways and mistakes. God respects the person who, when he fails, gets up and starts fresh. One of my heroes in the Bible is the Apostle Paul. Talk about failure! Through his whole life he was opposed, persecuted, shipwrecked, stoned, left for dead, deserted by trusted friends, slandered, and scorned. Trials and temptations were part of his life. He had many moments of failure, hardship, and tragedies in his life. He overcame his mishaps and mistakes and picked himself up and continued on his spiritual journey towards God’s Heavenly Kingdom. His life was committed not to worldly things but to spiritual fulfillment, something that we are missing today. We aim to satisfy our earthly desires, and we overlook our spiritual responsibilities. I’m going to give everyone a recipe to assist in reaching your goals. This year instead of making a bunch of small resolutions, make just one big one. Resolve in 2015 to “LIVE YOUR FAITH”. Let it encompass everything you do, every aspect of your life. Look at your life in terms of Stewardship. Spend time in daily prayer; come to Church regularly and Worship Christ. Use your talent in many of the ministries that the church provides. Find your passion in service, explore fasting, and teach your children or grandchildren. Give of your abundant treasure in thanksgiving to God, and for the work of the Gospel, in ways that are both sacrificial and meaningful. The opportunities are endless. Find a way to connect Christ and the Church to every aspect of your life. “LIVE YOUR FAITH”. We are blessed by God with the beginning of this New Year “2015”. In Thanksgiving, let us make a positive resolution to pursue our lives in accordance with the Will of God, and put our spiritual household into order, not only during the coming year, but for the remainder of our lives. Presbytera and I would like to wish everyone in the Community a Happy and Blessed New Year, and pray that through our Incarnate Lord may He bless and keep you healthy and wise, and let’s make this New Year “The Year of Christ”. Several times this year God answered my prayers with renewed commitments from our current and newly elected Parish Council members who, along with a core of dedicated volunteers, worked endless hours in keeping our Church moving in the positive direction. Recently, we replaced the roof over the main part of our Church, and we hosted a successful 60th Anniversary St. Nicholas Name Day Banquet. Every year has its ups and downs, yet we must always remember that through faith, God is with us. We may not initially see the light, but when we continue to pray and not lose hope, we find the light at the end of the tunnel. That Light is our Lord, Jesus Christ. One of my favorite quotes by an unknown author is, “Talking about our problems has become our greatest addiction. Break the habit. Talk about your joys.” There are a lot of wonderful things happening at St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church, so let’s focus on the good and work together to reach our goals in a joyful, cooperative way. HAPPY NEW YEAR AND GOOD HEALTH TO EVERYONE AND THEIR FAMILIES. Nora Kefalas, President GREEKTOWN CDC A message from the CEO, Col. John E. Gavrilis. Upon reflecting on the past twelve months, we have seen much progress in our community. The presence of our office in the community continues to be a focal point of advocacy for the neighborhood. Through our partnership with City government our community is cleaner and safer. We thank our residents who have been involved in community cleanups throughout the year. Our National Night Out event was a huge success bringing together residents, businesses, elected officials and police as a sign of unity against crime. We continue to be one of the City’s safest communities to live in. The CDC meets regularly with the police department to address crime and quality of life issues. We have successfully supported the residents and businesses in their position against nuisance properties and bars. The Greektown CDC was pleased that its project to increase parking in the community came to fruition thru the City’s redesign of angle parking along Oldham Street. Our organization recognizes that the economic development of our community is needed to sustain us in the long term. That is why we continue to advocate for new home development along Oldham Street and support the Pemco project. We continue to support our business district through a partnership with the Business Alliance. Banners have been installed and our flag court is maintained as a way to identify our community. Greektown has been featured in several news segments identifying our community as a destination point. We continue our efforts to support the kids of Greektown. Our Board has partnered with several affiliated organizations such as AHEPA #364 and Buddies. On a yearly basis, awarded numerous scholarships for our Greek youth; coordinated our annual trip to the Oriole Ball Park, hosting over 65 kids from the community and participated in the Annual Kennedy Krieger Christmas Party for the kids. The St. Nicholas community continues as one of our premier anchors. We supported their annual Greek festival, parade and the 60th Anni- versary Celebration of the church. The church has always been the visionary force in our community. It was the founder of the Greektown CDC. I am proud to have been a part of the CDC since its inception by the church. We look forward to 2015 as we continue to work together with the community to make it the best place to live, work, play and worship. We would like to remind our residents and businesses to pick up the leaves and not to discard them in the gutter drains. The City is very responsive to us, often cleaning out our gutter drains. They have asked for our help in getting this message out. Also, during the winter months, please check in on our elderly neighbors and help clear their sidewalks from snow and ice. You are reminded to call 311 for city services and 911 when witnessing a crime. Happy New Year and Xronia Polla from Col. John E. Gavrilis and the Board of Directors. 60th Anniversary Recognition & Thank You JANUARY-π∞¡OÀ∞ƒπO™ 2015 K O I N ø N I ∞ GOYA NEWS GOYANS GIVING BACK AT KENNEDY KRIEGER CHRISTMAS CELEBRATION On Thursday, December 11th, the GOYAns participated in the Kennedy Krieger Institute Christmas festivities. Annual trip to Ocean City, Maryland St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church’s annual trip to St. George Greek Orthodox Church in Ocean City, Maryland will take place this coming Saturday, January 10, 2015.Our goal is to take a motor coach bus from St. Nicholas Church to St. George Greek Orthodox Church, Ocean City, Md. to attend church services on Saturday morning. After the conclusion of the Divine Liturgy, we would travel to the beach for the Blessing of the Waters and for the “diving of the Cross”. Youths and adults are welcomed to dive for the Cross in the Atlantic ocean. Those interested in that activity should bring appropriate bathing suits, wet-suits and towels. The cost of the trip is $25.00 per person. If your child is enrolled in Greek School or GOYA, please consult those advisors regarding any discounts for children. Lunch is not included in the cost. We anticipate leaving by 7 a.m. and returning by 7 p.m. that same evening. All children must be accompanied by an adult. If you are interested, please contact the church office at 410-633-5020. Let's fill the bus!!! Thank you, Rev. Father Michael L. Pastrikos JANUARY-π∞¡OÀ∞ƒπO™ 2015 K O I N ø N I ∞ 15
