Message from Fr. Michael L. Pastrikos, Protopresbyter
CHRIST IS RISEN! TRULY HE IS RISEN!
As your parish priest, I greet you with these
words: Christ is risen! Truly He is risen!
The day of Pascha comes to us once more, but
did you ever wonder in deep
thought whether you’ll be on
this earth when we celebrate
Pascha in 2016? Take a few seconds to think about that. You
might say that thoughts like that
are very discouraging. I agree,
but in life we meet many difficulties and discouragements.
We should not take this wonderful celebration of Christ’s true
Resurrection from the dead so
lightly. We have come through
Meatfare, Cheesefare, and the
beginning of the Great Lenten
period, and then we experience
the Passion of Christ through
Holy Week services, leading to the great climax:
the Crucifixion and Resurrection of our Lord and
Savior Jesus Christ. After that process, we must be
truly elated by the fact Pascha, the Passover of
Christ, will touch our souls and will offer us the illumination of joy filled with God’s grace.
Our souls will be filled to overflowing, and we
will not know whether we are in heaven or on
earth. Only God will know, and to paraphrase St.
Paul’s words, “while it will touch another person
quietly, as if caressing him with a feather, almost
imperceptibly, but from being touched in this way
the Divine Paschal grace will pass though him and
fill him from head to foot with joyful trembling;
he will awaken and the eyes of his soul will open
to the light of a new life, and he will never forget
it throughout the rest of his life.”
This is the feeling and the experience that we
need to recognize coming out of the Paschal celebration. But how do we get to this point? What
must we do to get excited and to allow Christ’s
Passover to bless us, to feel his grace within us?
How can we reach this plateau of spiritual communication with our Lord? It’s very simple: we
need to come back to Christ,
meaning that we have to allow
him to embrace our mind and
soul and to regenerate passion
and enthusiasm within us. Think
of the father in the parable of the
prodigal son. What made the son
go back to his father after leaving him to find a better life? Simply, he didn’t find a better life because the grass was not greener
on the other side like he thought
it would be. Leaving his father
was the worst mistake he’d ever
made. It is the same with us when
we leave our Heavenly Father to
pursue the life that we want to live. If we leave our
Father, we will never see the light at the end of the
tunnel. The only things we will face are frustration, disappointment, a lack of love, loneliness,
emptiness, and the feeling of unworthiness.
There is a great saying that when a person hits
rock bottom in life, things can’t get any worse. So
the positive thing to do is to pick up yourself, wipe
the filth off, and start up the ladder of salvation.
In the Orthodox Church, we realize that the celebration of Pascha marks a Passover from this life
to the next. Life itself is a bridge: pass over it, but
don’t build your home upon it. We all have a free
will that has been given to us by God. Every person has the right to choose their own destiny. But
no matter which direction you choose to guide
your life in, there is a price to pay at the end of
the trip.
Now I’m going to tell you what my feelings are

MESSAGE FROM THE
PARISH PRESIDENT
MHNYMA TOY
¶ƒO∂¢ƒOÀ Δ∏™
∫Oπ¡OΔ∏Δ∞™
Dear Parishioners,
I want to share an Easter message that has touched millions
of people. The message is titled “Because of Him.”
It was unthinkable, impossible, unfathomable, unprecedented.
A single act that changed history. He was a
·· a teacher, an outcast and a leader.
carpenter,
Yet He did what no other person had ever
done. Like all who have preceded Him, He
lived and He died. But unlike all who preceded Him, He rose from the dead. He lived
again. He still lives and because He lives, we
all will live again.
Because of Him death has no sting; the
grave has no victory. We can start again, and
again, and again. Guilt becomes Peace. Regret becomes Relief.
Despair becomes Hope.
Because of Him, we have second chances. Clean slates. New
beginnings. There is no such thing as the end because of Him.
This Pascha, let us serve as witnesses for others to share our
Orthodox faith and to enjoy the endless possibilities we have
with God in our lives. Let us pray for the atheists, the nonbelievers, and those who have lost their way. Let us encourage those
who have become consumed by the daily hustle and bustle of life
and have placed prayer and church on the back burner.
Come and remember—Because of Him.
In Christ,
Demos Anastasiades,
Parish Council President

SUNDAY SCHOOL NEWS
THANK YOU to everyone who came to the Large Social
Hall to support our Annual Lenten Spaghetti Luncheon. We had
a rather good turnout, and the Sunday School looks forward to
your support again next year.
Our Parish Oratorical Festival was held on Saturday, March
21. We want to say thank you to our speakers, our judges, our
timekeeper, Fr. Michael Pastrikos, and all the parents and staff
who attended this annual event. Special thanks to our judges and
timekeeper, who took the time from their busy schedules to be
with us. Judges were Rebecca Loumiotis, Tina Harris, and Harry
Amarantidis. Our timekeeper was Joanne Trikoulis (former
principal of the Sunday School). Thank you all!
We would like to present our finalists, who will be representing St. Nicholas Church at the District Oratorical Festival: in the
Senior division, Flora Giakoumakis, and Kristina Anastasiadis;

and in the Junior division, Christos Vasilarakis. The District Festival will be hosted by St. Theodore Greek Orthodox Church in
Lanham, MD, on Saturday April 18. May God bless and guide all
of our finalists. We also want to congratulate our Elementary
participants, who did a great job in their presentations:
Arhontoula Kakarolis and Antonios Loizou. We look forward
to having more students like Arhontoula and Antonios in grades
4–6 participate so they will be better prepared to present in future festivals as Junior- and eventually Senior-level speakers.
The more times your children participate in these Annual Oratorical Festivals, the more knowledgeable they will also become
about their Orthodox faith, and the more confidence they will
gain in public speaking. The scholarship money for our finalists
will be awarded on Graduation Sunday, May 17.
We want to remind everyone that we will NOT be having
classes on Palm Sunday (April 5) or Easter Sunday (April 12), so
our teachers and aides may have the opportunity to enjoy these
beautiful services with their families, too. We wish our students,
staff, and church families Kalo Pascha/∫·ÏÔ ¶¿Û¯·!
PHILOPTOCHOS
We would like to thank Father Duane Johnson from Annunciation Cathedral and all the volunteers who contributed to this
years retreat. Most of all everyone who took time out of their
busy schedule to fulfill their spirit and soul.
This year we added a new event, “Festival of Tables”. A special thank you to Kyriaki Kontoudis and those that hosted a table
and those that attended. It was an afternoon of fellowship and
fun!
On March 28th a mailing went out to all members informing
of the Philoptochos Election which is to take place on Monday,
May 4th. If you are a member and did not receive the notice,
please let us know.
Please note that scholarship applications are available in the
church office and must be returned no later than Sunday, April
26th. The scholarships will be awarded in church on May 24th.
Please note this is a change of date.
On Sunday, April 5th we will be selling Tzourekia. If you
would like to place an order, please see any Philoptochos board
member or call Evangelia Saliaris 410-592-8345.
Your response and generosity towards the collection for the
Epitaphio was greatly appreciated. The remaining balance will
help those less fortunate.

GREEKTOWN CDC
A message from Col. John E. Gavrilis.
The Greektown CDC coordinated an Anti-Gang presentation
to the children of School 228, Mora Crossman Recreation Center. The presentation focused on alternative safe activities to our
youth and how to stay away from gang activity. We are very fortunate to have a great recreation center headed by Mr. Ed. He
has been with the center for near thirty years and has had a positive influence on several generations of Greektown youth. We
thank Ed for his service.
A request to transfer a liquor license to 5101 Eastern Avenue
has been received by the City Liquor Board. The business is currently a restaurant located on the corner of Rappolla and East-
Colonel John E Gavrilis
is the current Maryland
Transit Police Chief.
John has been in law enforcement for 40 years,
previously serving as
the Colonel/Chief for
the Baltimore City Police Department. He has
received
numerous
awards and commendations for bravery to include his undercover role in
arresting the Ku Klux Klan in Maryland. John is
also the CEO of the Greektown CDC, founded by
the St. Nicholas Church to revitalize Greektown.
Colonel Gavrilis has been a life member of St.

law enforcement officer in the State of Maryland.
ern Avenue. I spoke with many residents who are concerned
with the crime, noise, trash, traffic and unruly patrons that bars
in general bring to a residential neighborhood. Recent requests
for new licenses in Greektown have been denied based on community opposition. We have asked for a meeting to discuss their
business plan. Feel free to contact us at [email protected]
if you have any concerns.
I spoke with the City who agreed the mural along Eastern Avenue Underpass is in bad condition. We sent correspondence requesting the City discontinue the practice of painting over the
graffiti. This ruins the mural. We asked that the City use the
proper cleaning method of removing the graffiti. The mural, a
project of the Greektown CDC beautified the underpass and we
want to keep it that way. PEMCO update. The project has received the approval of the Greektown CDC and other area communities. The Greektown CDC spearheaded the effort and coordinated several meeting with the developer, City officials and
community leaders. We are waiting for the introduction of City
legislation to allow the project to go forward.
The Greek Independence Day Parade is scheduled for April
19, 2015 @ 2 pm in Greektown. The grand stand will be located
in front of the St. Nicholas Church. The parade celebrates
Greece’s independence. It is a wonderful time and truly highlights our Greek heritage. A special thanks goes out to the Parade Committee who have worked very hard to bring about a day
of celebration. Come out and support the parade, enjoy the good
food and drinks!
The Greektown CDC continues to conduct daily canvasses of
the neighborhood and request City services. The City has responded to our calls by picking up bulk trash, cleaning up illegally dumped trash/mattresses, furniture etc., and has responded
to fix pot holes. However, it is important that the residents and
businesses also conduct surveys of their neighborhood and report
violations to 311. The City is responsive to our calls, but you
must also call to report violations or need for City services.
Also, call 911 when witnessing a crime.

Message from Fr. Michael L. Pastrikos, Protopresbyter
CHRIST IS RISEN! TRULY HE IS RISEN!
Continued from page 1
and what I know. I know that Christ went along this road. He
ascended the cross, died, and ascended into heaven, and he
proved that passing from this life to the next is a sure thing. By
living a Christian life, I at least have the opportunity to receive
the gift of eternal life. But what future do those who choose the
opposite road have when they die? To be honest, I think that living an honest and decent life guided by morals, virtues, and principles makes me a winner. If I lived a Christian life, was honest,
never tried to hurt anyone, and always helped and gave to the
less fortunate, abiding by the rules and laws of society, following
God’s commandments, and respecting my peers, my reward is
already there for me. Keeping this in mind, hopefully we are able
to control our senses and let the light of the Risen Christ shine
into our souls and get rid of the old baggage that has hindered
our lives for so long. I have come to the conclusion that I can
never repay God for what he has done for me, but I also realize
that what God really wants from each of us is to love and care
for one another and to have a true friendship with him. God
wants to be involved in our lives in every way. He wants us to
bare our problems, our sorrows, and our joys to him. If you are
at the crossroads of deciding which way you will guide your life,
please don’t make the wrong decision: choose the road that will
take you to the gates of heaven.
To conclude, we are now in the heart of our spiritual journey.
We will once again witness Christ’s Passion, His Crucifixion, his
Resurrection, and finally his Ascension. We all know that Pascha
celebrates the promise of life in the face of death. Let us ask our
Lord to bring peace and forgiveness to our souls. Let us make
this Pascha a special day to behold that through the Cross, joy
has come to the whole world.

IOCC Update: What Is IOCC?
International Orthodox Christian Charities (http://iocc.org/),
headquartered in Baltimore, is a philanthropy that functions under the aegis of the Assembly of Canonical Orthodox Bishops of
America. This assembly represents all the canonical Orthodox
churches in the United States, across languages and ethnic
groups. IOCC engages in numerous relief and development efforts all over the world—from right here in the USA to Syria,
Greece, the Balkans, parts of Africa, and beyond. Rebecca
Loumiotis is IOCC’s representative in the St. Nicholas parish;
feel free to contact her ([email protected]) to learn more
about the exciting work being done globally—and how you can
be part of it!
The following excerpt from IOCC’s website gives just one example of the work our Orthodox Church is engaged in around
the globe (http://iocc.org/news/3-9-15ethiopia-sudanese-refugees-new-land.aspx):
Thousands of South Sudanese families who fled the violence
and bloodshed from their country’s civil war now face new hardships as refugees in Ethiopia. More than 196,000 refugees, of
which nearly two-thirds are children, have endured months of living out in open fields with little shelter from the searing sun, torrential rains, and floods that washed away the few possessions
they managed to cling to in flight. Stagnant water and poor sanitation created a breeding ground for cholera and other infectious
diseases, and threaten the health of children already weakened by
a lack of food and harsh living conditions.
IOCC, in cooperation with the Ethiopian Orthodox Church
Development and Inter Church Aid Commission (EOCDICAC), is responding with efforts to stem the spread of disease.
Newly constructed communal latrines provide privacy and sanitary facilities for 720 families from both the refugee camp and
the host communities in Leitchuor, and 300 more refugee families will soon have access to similar facilities under construction
in Kule camp. The distribution of soap, water storage cans and
new blankets brings an added measure of comfort to 4,000 families with malnourished children and people living with HIV/
AIDS at Tierkidi camp in Ethiopia’s Gambela region.
IOCC, an ACT Alliance member, is also addressing the need
to ease the emotional trauma facing the vulnerable refugees.
Crisis counseling for 1,000 refugee children, women, and elderly
helps each uprooted person develop the skills needed to cope
with the daily stress of refugee life and the uncertainty of what
their future holds.
