Professor Elimelech received his B.Sc. And M.Sc. degrees from the Hebrew University in Israel and Ph.D. from the Johns Hopkins University in 1989 in Environmental Engineering. His research interests include (i) engineered osmosis for sustainable production of water and power, (ii) environmental applications and implications of nanomaterials, (iii) membrane separations for desalination and water reuse, and (iv) water and sanitation in developing countries. Professor Elimelech was elected to the National Academy of Engineering in 2006 and was awarded the Athalie Richardson Irvine Clarke Prize in 2005. He served there as Director until December 2008. His scientific activity has focused mainly on the following fields: membrane science and engineering, membranes in artificial organs, integrated membrane processes, membrane preparation, and transport phenomena in membranes. He is the recipient of numerous awards and honors, including: Doctorate Honoris Causa from University of Paul Sabatier of Toulouse (France) (8 July 2009) and the International Cooperation Honor Award, September 2005, given by the Membrane Industry Association of China (MIAC).
