All authors with a right of authorship must be listed in Step 2. This counts for individuals as well as for groups of individuals. If a “collaborating team” has a legal status, a representative has to be named as “Main Author”. In all cases, the Main Author acts as the sole contact person with respect to the competition. Description of the project How is the “start date” of a project defined? Would site preparation, excavation or environmental remediation before the deadline make a project ineligible? PAG. 7 11436378 ALBO PAG. 8 For Building and civil engineering works (Group 1), and Landscape, urban design and infrastructure projects (Group 2), the “start date” is defined as when the first site preparation (including site clearing), excavation, and/or environmental remediation for building and/or civil engineering takes place. Materials, products and construction technologies (Group 3) are considered to start when manufacturing for commercial returns (commercial production) begins. Please note that all statements (including “estimated start of construction”) will be subject to an intensive validation process for any submission in the competition that is nominated by the Holcim Awards juries. This validation process takes place before winners are announced and prizes conferred. Is demolition work considered part of site preparation when defining the “start date” for the project? If demolition work is conducted in direct connection to the project and is included in the framework for works on the site (for example, as part of a redevelopment plan), then it is considered part of the site preparation. The start of demolition work would then need to be included in determining the “start date” of the project. If demolition work has been conducted independently to the submitted project and that demolition would take place irrespective of whether the submitted project goes ahead, then it is not considered part of the site preparation. Please explain briefly any demolition work that may have been conducted prior to the project within the “project description” field of the entry form. Please note that all statements (including “estimated start of construction”) will be subject to an intensive validation process for any submission in the competition that is nominated by the Holcim Awards juries. This validation process takes place before winners are announced and prizes conferred. How is “high potential for realization” defined? Submissions in the Holcim Awards (main category) are required to be at an advanced stage of design with a high potential for realization. “High potential for realization” infers that planning has reached a level of development that indicates the project could be viable (thus could be realized). The condition aims to ensure the Awards competition promotes approaches to sustainable construction that are tangible and thus contribute in a practical way to achieving greater sustainability of the built environment. How is “advanced stage of design” defined? The definition “advanced stage of design” allows a wide range of projects to enter the Holcim Awards (main category). If the project is the development of new materials, products, processes or concepts, a fairly developed, mature and concrete project is required rather than a vague idea or vision. If the project deals with a building or infrastructure project, the competition is seeking entries close to execution. Does the project have to include specific building materials or environmental techniques to enter the competition? 11436378 ALBO PAG. 9 No. All submissions will be evaluated according to the “target issues” for sustainable construction. The weighting between the criteria is the responsibility of the jury. Is it a requirement that the project has a defined client, or can the client be the designer? Although not a decisive requirement, the existence of a client might be proof of the project's advanced stage of development and feasibility. The client – in some specific cases – can have the dual responsibility of being both client and designer. Images illustrating the project How do I include images of the project in the application form? Upload image files from your hard disk by clicking on the “Upload” button or dragging the file into the position required. The image is then uploaded and a thumbnail is generated in the chosen position. You do not need to wait for one image to upload completely before selecting the next image for upload. Each image must be selected for upload individually. To move an image, click on the arrow and drag to change the order of Images. If you move an image to a position in which an image is already located, the original image will move to the vacant position. Captions move with their assigned image. To delete an image, click on the trash icon to delete an image from the gallery. The caption will be retained in the vacant image position. Captions are mandatory for each image (maximum length 500 characters for images #1 and #2, 100 characters for each of the others). I am not able to upload my jpg image files, what should I do? The Internet speed may be too slow, or security settings may be preventing uploads. If you are unable to resolve the problem, please contact the Helpdesk. Helpdesk » “Target issues” and assessment How are the “target issues” for sustainable construction weighted in importance? All “target issues” are equal in their importance. Nevertheless the juries are independent and free to use the “target issue” criteria as a guideline during the evaluation process. Important for this process is the self-assessment of the participants because it helps to understand the character of the project and its focus. “target issues” » Conditions Evaluation criteria How are the entries evaluated? 11436378 ALBO PAG. 10 Based on the “triple bottom line” concept, the Holcim Foundation and its partner universities have developed a set of five “target issues” for sustainable construction, which serve as a basis for the adjudication process of the Holcim Awards. More information about the “target issues”, including practical examples of each concept is available on the Holcim Foundation website. “target issues” » How will the jury receive the material to be evaluated? Will there be a printed copy and if so, what will the size of the hard copy? The juries will receive all data provided in both print and electronic form. The printed version consists of two pages A3, including images, texts, project information and self-assessment. The digital form will present the same data and includes a zoom function. Project eligibility Can my project already be under construction? It depends on when construction/production started. The project is not eligible for submission in either the Holcim Awards (main category) or “Next Generation” (young professionals and students category) if construction/production started before July 1, 2013. The start of construction is defined for architecture, building and civil engineering, landscape, urban design and infrastructure projects as when the first site preparation, excavation, and/or environmental remediation takes place. The start of construction is defined for materials, products and construction technologies projects as when manufacturing for commercial returns (commercial production) begins. Can I enter a project that is at the preliminary design phase? It depends on which category of the competition you wish to enter. Projects at the “concept” or “preliminary design phase” are only eligible for the “Next Generation” (young professionals and students category). The “preliminary design phase” is defined as: Preliminary design phase An entry of this type shall have completed most of the components of preliminary design (project planning and preparation), possibly prepared within the framework of a competition or as direct commission, and has further developed essential elements of a solution to the project task: • • • • • • • Analysis of available data Sketches or experimental drawings (scale 1:500) with explanatory notes if required, making use of the contributions made by other specialists involved in the project Preparation of perspectives, specimens, models Clarification and explanation of the key urban planning, design, functional, technical, building physics, financial and energy cost (e.g. cost-effective energy use strategies and use of renewable energy sources), and environmental or conservation factors, processes and conditions Preliminary negotiations with local authorities and other specialists involved in the project in respect of compliance with approval conditions Cost estimate Preparation of a financial budget 11436378 ALBO • PAG. 11 Preparation of a timetable and an organizational structure Authors under 30 years of age with projects at a final design stage, tendering, contract awarded or under construction/commercial production commenced should enter these projects in the Holcim Awards (main category). For the Holcim Awards (main category), projects must be at one of the following stages of implementation: final design stage; tendering; contract awarded; or under construction/commercial production commenced (started after July 1, 2013). Therefore, a project at "preliminary design phase" cannot be entered in the Holcim Awards (main category). Can I enter the same project in both the Holcim Awards (main category) and the “Next Generation” (young professionals and students category)? No. In addition to the other conditions of entry, eligibility for each category is determined by the status of planning of the project. Projects are eligible for the Holcim Awards (main category) only if they are at the final design, tendering, contract awarded or under construction stage, with a high probability of execution which may not have started before July 1, 2013. Projects are eligible for the “Next Generation” (young professionals and students category) only if they are at the concept, or preliminary design phase. Authors under 30 years of age with projects at a final design stage, tendering, contract awarded or under construction/commercial production commenced should enter these projects in the Holcim Awards (main category). Can I enter more than one project in the competition? Yes. There is no limit to the number of projects that any individual or team may enter in the competition. A project may only be entered in one of the two project categories. Each entry must be submitted individually using a separate Entry ID. Click on “New Entry” to generate a unique Entry ID for each project. If you have used the “Remember me” feature, you will need to click on “Logout” to return to the landing page to obtain a further Entry ID. May I submit a project that was entered in a previous cycle of the Holcim Awards competition? Yes. Provided the criteria for participation in the Holcim Awards competition are fulfilled. If the project has been submitted in another competition, please select “yes” for “Submitted in any other competition*” in Step 3 of the online entry form, and provide the title of the other competition and result if known. How does a project qualify for the Global Holcim Awards? Projects awarded Holcim Awards Gold, Holcim Awards Silver, or Holcim Awards Bronze in all regional competitions all automatically qualify for the global Holcim Awards competition in 2015. The total prize amount for the global competition is USD 350,000: Global Holcim Awards Gold USD 200,000; Global Holcim Awards Silver USD 100,000; Global Holcim Awards Bronze USD 50,000. 11436378 ALBO PAG. 12 Results of the global phase of the 4th International Holcim Awards competition will be announced in May 2015. Is my project eligible for the global Awards if it is awarded at the regional level but construction starts before the global Awards assessment? Yes. To be eligible for entry, construction of the project must not have commenced prior to July 1, 2013. Is it possible to participate if test models of the product or project have been built before July 1, 2013 but not the real project or product series? Yes. Can I enter a building component in the competition? Yes. A building component such as a ventilation system or heat exchange system may be entered in the competition and should be assigned to the “Materials, products and construction technologies” in Step 1. Please note that “Materials, products and construction technologies” may be entered in the competition only if manufacturing for commercial returns (commercial production) started after July 1, 2013. Any prototypes must demonstrate that the building technology is transferable to other buildings. Can I enter a database or online directory in the competition? No. The Holcim Awards competition is open only to building and civil engineering works; landscape, urban design and infrastructure; and materials, products and construction technologies. Entries in the competition are assessed by independent regional juries on the basis of the five "target issues" for sustainable construction and a database or online directory would be unable to address these criteria without extrapolation to the component products that it lists. Participation Is the competition open only to architects and architecture students? No. The Holcim Awards recognize contributions to sustainable construction in architecture, landscape and urban design, civil and mechanical engineering and related disciplines. Can a project be entered in the competition if a member of the team is a member of a regional jury panel? A project may not be entered in the competition if a member of the regional jury is a project author. A project may, however, be submitted in the Holcim Awards competition where a project author is a member of another regional jury that will not asses the project. Members of the global Holcim Awards jury are not eligible to participate as authors of any project. In all cases, the respective person must be listed as a project author. Can participants in previous Holcim Awards competitions enter the competition again? 11436378 ALBO PAG. 13 Yes. Authors of projects submitted in the 1st, 2nd and 3rd Holcim Awards competitions are welcome to re-enter the competition. A project submitted in a previous cycle of the Holcim Awards competition may only be re-entered if substantial changes/progress has been made or the project was rejected for formal reasons (e.g. missing data, conflict of interest with a member of the jury, etc.). In addition, the entry would need to comply with the full conditions of entry in the current Holcim Awards competition. What is the purpose of the “Next Generation” (young professionals and students) category? The intention is to encourage young professionals and university students to participate in the competition. The “Next Generation” (young professionals and students category) is open to visionary projects and bold ideas that contribute to the “target issues” for sustainable construction. All authors must be aged between 18 and 30 years of age (date of birth between July 2, 1982 and March 24, 1996). Impediments / Conflict of interest How is authorship defined where I have a contract registered in my name to develop a project, but the technical elements of the project will be developed in cooperation with engineers? Shall I enter only myself as author, all engineers as well, or only the engineers involved in the “sustainability” elements of the project? Respecting regional and international law, each person with a right of authorship on the elements of the project submitted must be listed in the submission. If the Main Author enters only a detail of a project, then only the author/team of that detail must be named. If the Main Author submits a project in its entirety, all authors must be named. Consent Can a project be submitted by the initiator/investor or should the application be submitted by the planner/architect? Who would receive the prize? If more than one person has the right to be the author, the details of all team members should be included in the application. All members would receive the prize. Legal entities and design teams must name an authorized representative (ie: “Main Author”) who will act as the sole responsible contact person. The statements made in the online Declaration of Authorship are considered to be true and legally binding in compliance with local applicable laws and regulations. Every author is required to individually clarify his or her eligibility for participation. The eligibility of the authors will be rechecked after the meeting of the jury. The applicant must also advise how any prize money received would be distributed (in %) for each author. What is the role of the authorized representative (ie: “Main Author”), who must be named by legal entities and design teams, and how are they identified in the application process? 11436378 ALBO PAG. 14 The authorized representative will act as sole contact person between the Holcim Foundation and the legal entities and design teams. This “contact person” is identified in Step 2 as “Main Author”. Additional members of the team are “Further Authors”. Who will receive the prize in case of design teams or legal entities? All authors of the project receive the prize. It is up to the team to decide on the distribution of the prize money. In Step 2 of the Online Entry Form the “Main Author” must declare how any prize money received would be distributed (in %) for each author. Ownership and copyright How will the entries in the competition be used? How is the right of ownership addressed? Although the right of authorship, including protection against the copying of ideas and the right to publication of the design remains with each author, the latter explicitly grants the Holcim Foundation for Sustainable Construction the right to use the data, documents, and files submitted in its entirety or partly, internally or externally, in every form and for any purpose whatsoever in relation to the Holcim Awards competition. The primary objective of the Holcim Foundation is the non-commercial promotion and development of sustainable construction at national, regional, and global levels. Utilizing the global reach of the Holcim Group, the Holcim Foundation accelerates progress towards sustainable construction, encouraging initiatives in support of sustainable approaches to the provision of housing and infrastructure in developing and industrialized nations alike. The Holcim Foundation seeks to unite diverse global expertise and increase awareness of the critical role of the built environment in sustainability. Promoting best practice, pioneering fresh solutions, and inspiring young architects, engineers, planners, developers and contractors to adopt sustainable parameters for all their building projects are just a few of its ambitious objectives. When a project is submitted by a group, is there a limit (maximum) placed on the size of the group? No. There is no limit to group numbers. Documentation Will my project be published by the Holcim Foundation? All Holcim Awards prize-winning projects will be presented in various print and electronic communications by the Holcim Foundation for Sustainable Construction. Submitted projects may be compiled by the Holcim Foundation for public access in electronic and/or printed format, giving credit to the authors and their collaborators in compliance with the authorship declaration. It is recommended to complete your submission well ahead of the finalization time. How does the Holcim Foundation define “sustainable construction”? Sustainable construction is a way to meet present-day needs for housing and infrastructure without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs in times to come. This reflects in a nutshell the definition of the United Nations Environmental Program (UNEP) for sustainable construction as “a way for the building industry to move towards achieving sustainable development, taking into account environmental, socio-economic, and cultural issues. Specifically, it involves issues such as design and management of buildings, materials and building performance energy and resource consumption – all within the larger orbit of urban development and management”. Sustainable construction requires a mindset which goes far beyond the discipline of an exact science. It requires the combination of experience acquired in architecture, engineering, and construction over many centuries, with the innovative exploration of new approaches in order to meet the demands of future generations. Sustainable construction blends experience with the urge to explore new horizons. It depends on hands-on knowledge and on research. Depending on context and needs, sustainable construction must combine the application of different methods and approaches with the ongoing exploration of solid engineering, planning, and development strategies as far as society and environment are concerned. A diversity of approaches incorporating positive ecological, economic, and aesthetic elements can provide society with an opportunity to benefit from innovations and expertise developed elsewhere. The Holcim Foundation is committed to the “triple bottom line” concept which asserts that longterm and sustainable advancement requires the balanced achievement of economic development, environmental performance, and social responsibility. It confirms that the benefits to society in terms of environmental quality, social progress, and well-being outweigh the costs and efforts made to achieve them. Based on this concept, the Holcim Foundation and its partner universities have identified a set of five “target issues” for sustainable construction, which serve as a basis for the adjudication process of the Holcim Awards for sustainable construction. “target issues” » How does the Holcim Foundation operate? The Holcim Foundation is supported by Holcim Ltd and is independent of its commercial interests. Holcim Ltd is one of the world’s leading suppliers of cement and aggregates (crushed stone, gravel and sand) as well as further activities such as ready-mix concrete and asphalt including services. The Holcim Group holds majority and minority interests in around 70 countries on all continents. To meet its challenging objectives, the Holcim Foundation has: Board of the Holcim Foundation » 11436378 ALBO PAG. 17 Technical Competence Center » Office » Partner Universities » Awards Ambassadors » Awards Coordinators » Why does the Holcim Foundation conduct an Awards competition? The Awards competition encourages sustainable responses to the technological, environmental, socioeconomic and cultural issues affecting building and construction – regionally as well as globally. One objective of the Holcim Awards is to progressively generate a worldwide community of recognized practitioners of excellence in sustainable construction.
