Nel 1975 Hannes Anrig organizza la prima
«Festa New Orleans» a Lugano, città in cui
l’evento avrà regolarmente luogo fino al 1984.
Ma nel 1985 Anrig rompe con le autorità
cittadine e trasferisce la manifestazione sulle
rive del Verbano, denominandola «Festa New
Orleans Music Ascona». Nel periodo in cui Anrig
è alla guida del festival invita ad Ascona
numerosi musicisti storici di New Orleans, alcuni
già molto avanti negli anni. Fra le star, Danny
Barker (bj), Louis Nelson (tb) e Doc Cheatham (tp).
Nel 1997 l'Ente turistico decide di interrompere la collaborazione con il fondatore
del festival: l'«era Anrig» si conclude.
Dopo aver organizzato nel 1996 e 1997 un
programma off in vari bar e ristoranti di Ascona,
affiancando quindi Hannes Anrig alla programmazione musicale, Karl Heinz Ern assume la
direzione artistica del festival dal 1998 al 2003.
Il festival è rinominato «New Orleans Jazz
Ascona» e con Ern si orienta maggiormente
verso il jazz classico e lo swing degli anni
1930 –1940. Protagonisti sono musicisti
come Ed Polcer (co), Dan Barrett (tb, co), Lino
Patruno (g), Leroy Jones (tp), Big Al Carson (voc).
Nel 2004 il festival festeggia i 20 anni con
un nuovo direttore artistico, Nicolas Gilliet,
e un nuovo nome: «JazzAscona New Orleans
& Classics». Gilliet ridefinisce la programmazione
musicale: mainstream, R&B, soul, bossa nova
e funk si affiancano agli stili classici fino ad
allora presentati.
Con Niki Haris e Irma Thomas (voc), Plas Johnson (ts), e solisti dallo stile più moderno, come
Dado Moroni (p), Trombone Shorty (tp, tb),
Rhoda Scott (hammond B3) o Herlin Riley (dm),
il festival si apre a un nuovo pubblico rimanendo
fedele alla sua storia.
1975 organisiert Hannes Anrig die erste
«Festa New Orleans» in Lugano. Bis 1984
findet der Anlass in Lugano statt.
1985 verlegt Anrig ihn nach Ascona unter dem
Namen «Festa New Orleans Music Ascona».
In Anrigs Zeit treten am Festival in Ascona
viele Veteranen aus New Orleans auf, unter
anderem Danny Barker (bj), Louis Nelson (tb)
und Doc Cheatham (tp).
1997 geht diese Epoche zu Ende, denn der
Verkehrsverein trennt sich von ihm.
In 1975, Hannes Anrig organizes the first «Festa

Verantwortung für das Musikprogramm hat. Ab
1998 bis 2003 übernimmt er die künstlerische
Leitung des Festivals, das jetzt «New Orleans
Jazz Ascona» heisst. Ern orientiert sich mehr am
«klassischen» Jazz und am Swing von 1930 –
1940. Musiker wie Ed Polcer (co), Dan Barrett
(tb, co), Lino Patruno (g), Leroy Jones (tp), Big Al

In 1996 and 1997 Karl Heinz Ern organizes the

the music program. From 1998 until 2003 Ern
directs the Festival that now is denoted as «New
Orleans Jazz Ascona». Ern’s emphasis is oriented
primarly in the direction of «classic» Jazz and

Club, nata il 24 settembre 2008, che si prefigge
gli obiettivi di promuovere il jazz, di creare
un circolo di persone appassionate e di dare
continuità all'offerta jazzistica ad Ascona
sull'arco dell'anno. L'offerta si compone di
8 concerti, che hanno luogo il lunedì, dal mese
di ottobre al mese di maggio.
Wer sind wir?
Willkommen bei der Vereinigung Jazz Cat Club,
gegründet am 24. September 2008, die sich zum
Ziel setzt, den Jazz objektiv zu fördern, eine
Gruppe von begeisterten Personen zu bilden
und dem Jazz-Angebot in Ascona über das ganze
Jahr Kontinuität zu geben. Das Angebot umfasst
8 Konzerte, die jeweils am Montag stattfinden,
von Oktober bis Mai.

2010 Dani Felber Big Band. Consisting of
18 musicians from 10 countries. In 2009 the
Big Band made an album with Frank Foster
(ts, USA): More Than Just Friends.
2009 Robi Weber Quartet. This quartet is
one of the best Soul-Jazz Bands of our country,
with a formidable national and international
career.
2009 Lifetime Achievement Award
Hazy Osterwald. Hazy, successful bandleader,
trompeter and vibraphonist is honored for his
life's work.
2008 Swing Kids of Dai Kimoto. The prize
is being awarded for the originality and the
quality of this formation and for the untiring
dedication for the young jazz enthusiasts
in Switzerland.
2007 Loverfield Jazz Band. During their
21 years life span this band created an ever
growing number of fans. Their repertory of
Dixieland is supplemented by addition of Swing,
Blues and Gospel.

Lo swissjazzorama.ch è l’unico archivio pubblico
del jazz in Svizzera: ha sede a Uster (Canton
Zurigo) ed è gestito dall’omonima associazione.
Oltre 30 collaboratori lavorano a titolo volontario
per raccogliere, catalogare e archiviare documenti e informazioni, supporti audio e video sul
mondo del jazz svizzero ed estero.
La collaborazione con JazzAscona è iniziata nel
2004: da allora swissjazzorama.ch presenta
regolarmente esposizioni sul jazz e dispone di un

Das swissjazzorama.ch ist das einzige öffentliche
Jazzarchiv der Schweiz. Es befindet sich in Uster
(Zürich) und ist als Verein organisiert. Über 30
ehrenamtliche freiwillige Mitarbeiterinnen und
Mitarbeiter sammeln, katalogisieren und erfassen
Jazzdokumente und Ton- und Bildträger aus
dem grossen Bereich des Jazz in der Schweiz
und im Ausland.
The swissjazzorama.ch is the only public
Jazz Archives in Switzerland. It is situated in
Uster (Zürich) and organized as an association.
More than 30 volunteers (females, males)
collect, classify and register documents,
sound carriers, photo- and film documentaries
of the huge range of Jazz in Switzerland
and from abroad.

jazz in Ticino im Tessin
Un capitolo particolare nella
storia del festival e della musica
nel Canton Ticino: è «la guerra
del jazz» che scoppia il giorno
in cui il fondatore e direttore
artistico Hannes Anrig decide
di traslocare la «sua» Festa New
Orleans da Lugano ad Ascona.
Così ne riferisce il giornale satirico
svizzero tedesco Nebelspalter.
1975 wurde die Festa New Orleans
in Lugano gegründet. 1985 wurde
der Anlass nach Ascona verlegt.
Grund genug für den Nebelspalter
zu recherchieren warum.

I cittadini hanno detto basta: ora che tutto
funziona così bene e che la «Festa New Orleans
Music» gode di una buona reputazione a livello
internazionale, ora è nostra e ce ne occupiamo
noi. Nominiamo Anrig direttore artistico senza
competenze. Alla stampa raccontano che bisogna
salvaguardare la continuità della manifestazione,
affinché la sua esistenza possa essere garantita
anche se un giorno Anrig si dovesse ammalare.
Quando per dieci anni nessuno si è mai preoccupato per la sua salute!

Anche Hannes Anrig ha detto basta e ha cercato
lidi più cordiali per la sua festa. Li ha trovati
sul Lago Maggiore ad Ascona, dove la festa
non è stata accolta solo in modo ospitale, bensì
a braccia aperte. Non sarà stato solo l'amore
per il jazz, ma anche un po' di gioia maligna
nel giocare un brutto tiro alla potente e grande
Lugano.
Infatti anche in questo si è riusciti. Un urlo
di rabbia da Lugano è risuonato sulla stampa
ticinese. Sul Lago di Lugano si è parlato di
mancato rispetto delle direttive turistiche,
ciononostante, per irritare gli asconesi, si intende
organizzare una festa del jazz sui palcoscenici
del centro città, con un comitato ad hoc e per
di più con una settimana di anticipo.
Ma chi è il vero vincitore? Gli amanti del jazz
in particolare. Certamente anche Ascona,
soprattutto perché questa località ha immediatamente trovato, ovviamente, un'altra grande
banca come sponsor. L'amore per il jazz delle
nostre banche sembra essere sconfinato!

had been collected.
L'uragano Katrina è stato uno dei cinque
più gravi uragani della storia degli Stati Uniti,
il peggiore in termini di danni economici e uno
dei più drammatici per il numero dei morti.
Katrina si è formato il 23 agosto 2005 ed ha
causato devastazioni lungo l'intera costa
meridionale degli Stati Uniti, dalla Louisiana alla
Florida. Le maggiori perdite di vite e di danni alle
infrastrutture sono avvenuti a New Orleans, in
Louisiana, che è stata inondata all’80 percento
e sommersa, in certi punti, sotto 7 metri di
acqua, in seguito al cedimento di un sistema di
argini rivelatosi drammaticamente insufficiente.
Almeno 1836 persone hanno perso la vita a
causa dell'uragano. Si stima che la tempesta
abbia causato danni per 81 miliardi di dollari.
Si tratta del più grave disastro naturale della
storia degli Stati Uniti in termini economici.

der Vereinigten Staaten. Der Hurrikan richtete
Ende August 2005 in den südöstlichen Teilen der
USA, insbesondere an der dortigen Golfküste,
enorme Schäden an und erreichte zeitweise die
Stufe 5. Zu den betroffenen Bundesstaaten
gehörten Florida, Louisiana (besonders der
Großraum New Orleans), Mississippi, Alabama
und Georgia.
Durch den Sturm und seine Folgen kamen etwa
1800 Menschen ums Leben. Der Sachschaden
belief sich auf etwa 81 Milliarden US-Dollar.
Insbesondere die Stadt New Orleans war stark
betroffen. Durch ihre geographische Lage führten
zwei Brüche im Deichsystem dazu, dass bis zu
80 Prozent des Stadtgebietes bis zu 7 Meter tief
unter Wasser standen.
«The Spirit
of New Orleans»
Unter diesem Titel stand 2006 die Ausstellung
des swissjazzorama in Ascona.
Beleuchtet wurde der Jazz und sein Umfeld in
New Orleans, sowie die Katastrophe «Katrina».
Was hat «Katrina» für Auswirkungen auf
New Orleans, seine Bewohner und seine
Musiker. Die Ausstellung löste bei Besuchern und
Musikern grosse Betroffenheit aus.
«Blues in the South»
titelte die Schlusstafel,
verbunden mit dem nachfolgenden Zitat:
«Alles in allem ist die Zukunft nach
dieser beispiellosen Katastrophe
für die einstmals lebenslustige Stadt,
die sich «The Big Easy» nannte
und deren Name für immer mit dem
Jazz verbunden ist, absolut düster.
Der Titel der Tafel
«New Orleans – Blues in the South»
scheint mehr als gerechtfertigt!»

Ausblick
Prospects
«New Orleans & Classic» è stato
il sottotitolo che per alcuni anni
ha accompagnato il nome del
festival JazzAscona. Un motto
davvero azzeccato, per tutte le
edizioni dal 1984 al 2014.
Fino a quando ci saranno musiciste e musicisti che si dedicheranno a questo genere di musica,
JazzAscona potrà continuare a
presentarli al suo pubblico.
Affinché mantenga questa sua
missione, l'Ente turistico e le
autorità comunali di Ascona
hanno bisogno di trovare persone
che sostengano con passione e
dedizione il festival, pronte a
offrire tutta la loro energia e
competenza organizzativa.
Ma quello che non deve mancare
è un pubblico che voglia godere
e apprezzare il jazz offerto ad
Ascona.
Se tutto queste premesse continueranno a realizzarsi, potremo
ancora per molto tempo annunciare al mondo: JazzAscona vive!

«New Orleans & Classics» was
temporarily the addition to the
festival name JazzAscona. It was
the proper name to all festivals
from 1984 to 2014.
As long as there are musicians
(female and male), who cultivate
this type of jazz, JazzAscona
will be alive.
In addition, people are needed
at the Ente turistico, within
the authorities of Ascona, who
find jazz enthusiasts who work
with all their strength for the
organisation of the Festival.
Also the audience must be there
that is delighted with the music
offered in Ascona.
If all fits perfectly, one can be
satisfied and say:
JazzAscona will survive!
Solange es Musikerinnen und
Musiker gibt, die diese Art von
Jazz pflegen, kann JazzAscona
weiterleben.
Dazu braucht es dann noch Menschen bei Ente turistico und in
den Behörden von Ascona, die
immer wieder Jazz-Enthusiasten
finden, die ihre ganze Kraft für
die Organisation des Festivals
einsetzen.
Auch ein Publikum, das sich vom
Jazz, der in Ascona angeboten
wird, begeistern lässt, darf nicht
fehlen.
Wenn alles zusammenpasst, kann
man zufrieden sein und sagen:
JazzAscona lebt weiter!
