OCTOBER/ O∫ΔøμƒπO™ 2012 KOINONIA A Monthly Publication of the Saint Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church. 520 S. Ponca Street, Baltimore, MD 21224 Father Michael’sPastoral New Year’s Message Fr. Michael’s Message YOUR PLEDGE OF COMMITMENT WILL KEEP THE DOORS OF THE CHURCH OPEN! I hope by now everyone in the Community is back to normal again. Vacations are over, schools have started, summer is over, and we are now in the fall season. Days will start to get shorter and nights longer. The New Ecclesiastical Year has begun and we are looking forward to a wonderful and challenging new year. Our Church Organizations (Ladies Philoptochos, Diamonds, Choir, GOYA, YAL, JOY, Greek school P.T.A., Dance Groups, etc.) are back to normal having their monthly meetings, and scheduling their future events. The Sunday school and Greek School classes have begun bringing to their new curriculum a fresh and positive beginning. In last’s months “Koinonia” article I wrote about what was happening in the Parish. I realize that the message was not fun to read but it gave a true picture of what is truly happening in our Church. If we don’t get our act together, we are going to be facing major financial problems in the future. If we take the positive side meaning (the glass being half full) our Parish Council members is handling the crisis in a fashionable manner. But we still have a lot of work to do. We need to do a better job in the area of Stewardship, and Volunteering. We have to wake up and smell the coffee. We have to ask ourselves do we want our parish to grow and prosper, or do we want our church to close its doors forever. Just recently our parish was in a financial bind, but with the help of our Organizations, and a few personal donations from our parishioners we made it through for the month of September. I would like to personally thank the members of the St. Nicholas Diamonds, the Ladies Philoptochos Society, the Greek School P.T.A., The Youth Group GOYA, Sunday School Staff, and the Rhodian Society of Baltimore, for their generous contributions, because without their support we would not have made it financially to this point. I’m bringing these facts out to the parishioners not to cause a panic in the Community, but to give everyone a heads up of what is to come if we don’t stick together as a family. We need to realize that our young people within the ages of 20-50 are not stepping up to the plate to play ball. Between these ages, many of them have not signed a pledge card and are not even members of the Church. But if they were asked this simple question? What church to you belong to? Their answer would be of course St. Nicholas. Many of them have a memory gap; they forget that they were born and raised in Greektown. They grew up in this parish, they went to JOY, Sunday School, Greek School, Altar, GOYA, Dance Groups, and were involved in a lot of the events and activities of the church. All of you grew up with so many good memories here at St. Nicholas. A lot of you got married and some of you are still single. BUT DID YOU FORGET WHERE YOU CAME FROM. If you’re reading this, WE NEED YOU NOW, MORE THAN EVER! To step up to plate and help your church get out of this financial crisis. Yes we need you now more than ever. If you want your church to grow we need to instill new blood in the community. We need our young people to volunteer their services and be a part of the community. STOP STANDING ON THE SIDELINES AND GET INVOLVED AND MAKE CHANGE HAPPEN. In our community, we have professionals in all fields. We have Architects, Contractors, Engineers, Financial Planners, Accountants, Marketing Specialists, Consultants, Teachers, Doctors, Lawyers, Nurses, Technicians, Electricians, Plumbers, and handy men qualified to help our community grow. WHERE ARE YOU? In my previous parish in Canton, Ohio everyone got together and built with their hands 3 HUD houses for the needy. How was this accomplished? AND THE ANSWER IS? PEOPLE WORKING TOGETHER SIDE BY SIDE FOR ONE COMMON GOAL. I address this message to all who want to be “Doer’s” and not “Hearer’s”. If you see that your community needs help, you should personally make the commitment and volunteer your services. Don’t wait to be called, you make the first step. I recall what President John F. Kennedy said; ASK NOT WHAT YOUR COUNTRY CAN DO FOR YOU, BUT WHAT YOU CAN DO FOR YOUR COUNTRY. And I say, Ask not what your church can do for you, but what you can do to help your church. As Christian American citizens who enjoy the bounties of this land which God has richly blessed, we also find ourselves in transition as election days approach. Living in this great nation in which we have many God-given Rights among which is the Right to worship as we please, we also have certain obligations and duties. One of these duties is to participate in the election process in determining who will represent us; whether it be that of our church community or State and National Elections. It is our obligation to become well-informed before making decisions and casting our ballots. NOW is the time to research the candidates and issues if we have not already done so. During this month we are preparing for elections to the Board in our church community, as well as for those who will represent us nationally in Congress and the White House. At this time we should be encouraging the involved stewards of our church to take on leadership roles by becoming candidates for our Church Board. Before voting we should learn the qualifications of each candidate: dedication and service to the St. Nicholas Church, time and commitment to fulfilling the obligations of Board member, the desire to lead our Church in her Holy Mission. It goes without saying, that we must participate in electing the new Board member thus showing our support and confidence in them. Likewise, it is our duty to be well-versed in the issues that face us on November 6, Election Day, some of which are: Questions 4,5,6, and 7. These are the issues for which many of us had signed petitions thus enabling us to bring the matters before the general public to be voted on November 6. If we had not been successful, each of these Questions would have already become law and would have been in effect today. Our choices on these Questions are “FOR” or “AGAINST”. Question 4 deals with the “Dream Act” giving reduced in-State college tuition rates to the children of non-citizen Maryland residents. Question 5 allows the Maryland Congressional boundary lines to be changed, in effect gerrymandering certain parts of the State. Question 6 allows for same sex marriage in Maryland, which is not in accordance with our Christian principles. Question 7 is the highly advertised issue of allowing yet another casino in Maryland. At every election many citizens will vote only for President or Governor and ignore questions such as these even though they affect each of us spiritually and/or economically. Each of us needs to take a stand and vote on these Questions. In order to make well-informed decisions on November 6 that reflect our views we must “do our homework” now and continue to investigate. We cannot trust and rely on only one source. Some will say, “I don’t vote because they’re all the same”. This not true. Furthermore, when someone does not exercise his right to vote he surrenders that power to someone else. If one takes the time to inquire, listen, read, and look into the background, history, voting record, and philosophy of each candidate, specific differences between candidates will surface. In fact, we would gain much insight if we converse with our fellow Americans who have lived under other, non-Christian, regimes and were forced to flee their native countries. They had experienced and are once again observing certain unbeneficial trends taking place in America. Through their eyes we would see more clearly and better understand the spiritual erosion taking hold in our country where everything Christian is under attack and is being replaced. It is true, however as we have seen in the past, that certain “empty” promises made during a campaign are not kept; they simply sound good and are what people wish to hear. Hopefully, in years to come we will not be hearing voters say, “But, I didn’t know”. “I believed what I heard and saw on TV”. These are comments that we now hear not only pertaining to national and state elections, but local elections as well. Our country is in crisis, culturally as well as economically. We recall the words of President Kennedy, “Ask not what your country can do for you, ask what you can do for your country”. There is NO FREE LUNCH. In summary, each of us makes his decision based on his own philosophy, his own historic background, and how he envisions the future of our beloved country. The United States of America was founded on Judeo-Christian principles and as Christians it is our pledge to God that we preserve and continue our country as such, placing our trust in Him. ∫∞£∏∫√¡Δ∞ Δ√À ÃI™Δπ∞¡√À ∞ª∂ƒπ∫∞¡√À ¶√§πΔ∏ ∞fi ÙËÓ ∂˘·ÁÁÂÏ›· §·Ï¿ ΔÔ ÊıÈÓfiˆÚÔ ¤ÊÙ·ÛÂ! How can you simplify your life—cutting back to so that you are able to invest time, energy, and resources into bearing good fruit according to God’s will? God the Vinedresser will prune our lives to help us bear better fruit. Pray... Lord, abide more fully in me. Help me to prune and manage my life better. Re-shape my living to bear good fruit that glorifies you. Act... Make a list of areas in your life that are overgrown. Prune back where you are able in order to free up time and resources to invest in bearing more fruit. Become a prudent manager (steward) of God’s gifts, protecting and growing them in order to return to God that which He has entrusted to you. Renew... In gratitude for God’s blessing, commit to Christ and give an offering. Join us on Sunday, November 11th to renew your commitment to Christ. As always, a Luncheon will be provided FREE to all of our church members. Thank you. The Stewardship Committee Members 5) Capital Fundraising 6) Advertising or Graphic Artists We are looking for individuals to take the church into the 21st century. It is not a prerequisite for a candidate to speak the Greek Language. Instead, we are seeking individuals who work cooperatively, and have a genuine desire to improve the financial condition and overall workings of the church. Please search your heart and consider volunteering to become a part of the St. Nicholas Parish Council. Thank you.
