Message from Fr. Michael L. Pastrikos, Protopresbyter KOINONIA FEBRUARYº∂µƒOÀ∞ƒπO™ 2015 Enjoy the Fruit of Your Labors! We are already in the month of February; how fast time flies when you’re having fun. We need to look back in time and remember the positive as well as the negative things that happened during last year. I’m sure we all can name our failures and our achievements during 2014. But now we need to stop and think: Where do we go from here? There is so much that has been accomplished, so much to be excited about, and even more to be proud of. It truly does take a community to fulfill our goals and mission. In years past our parish of St. Nicholas went through trying times, and there have been many challenging events in the life of the parish. Things that people claimed that we couldn’t accomplish as a family, thank God we accomplished them. This past year saw us reach new heights. I am thankful that so many people from our community gave their time, talent, and treasure to make this success that we had this year. Our Greek School program has increased by leaps and bounds. We have now 120 students enrolled, and our children are learning how to speak, read, and write in their mother language. I want to give the credit to our Greek School teachers, our Greek School PTA, staff, the parents, and last to our School Board President, Mrs. Stamatia Ieromonachos, who has done an outstanding job in overseeing and developing new ideas that will take our Greek School to even higher levels of success. Here at St. Nicholas we are trying to be transparent about what lies ahead and what we as a community must do to continue down the path of fulfilling our mission while protecting and ensuring our future. One of our goals has been to solidify our church membership. We need to create a better outreach program, to bring back those that have strayed, to reach out to the greater community and bring new faces into the fold. There is a beautiful and meaningful story about a sheepherder who lost one of his sheep. He didn’t think of the ninety-nine that he had but went out searching for the one that was lost. We need to get back to that mentality. And this can only be done if we work together as a family, reaching out to our friends and neighbors and showing them respect, love, and compassion. We need to continue to make our community a church that believes in a family environment, a home where one can say, “I want to belong here because I feel comfortable being here.” We need to create a community that worships together and engages in fellowship. I have always said that the past is something that we can learn from, and the present is something that we can grow on and bring about positive things for our community. By working together, side by side in the trenches, if we put our minds together we can accomplish anything that comes our way. Now this brings me to the heart of this message. I want to emphasize that my goal here is to simply get your mind thinking. Our church has never tried to hide the fact that we operate by your generosity. Because without YOU, the parishioner, we could not exist as a parish. I will never claim that your generosity takes only the form of money. St. Nicholas needs and has always needed your volunteerism, your time, and your vast and unique talents. We have people who volunteer their time on the Parish Council, in catering, church activities, dinners, dances, the festival, making coffee, teaching Sunday School, singing in the choir, as advisers for GOYA and JOY, basketball coaches, who shovel the snow and weed our grounds, and who serve in the Altar. The list is endless and this work is important as your financial contributions. We have to continue volunteering our time and effort to the church, and I hope and pray that this will never stop. We have to have the mentality that this is our church, and we have to give of ourselves in order to support its missions and vision for the future. We have so much to do in our parish, and we need everyone’s help. Here are some future projects that we are looking into to help grow our parish financially. We are trying to establish a new Learning Center not only for our community but also for the community at large. In this program, our children will be in a safe environment, and they will have the opportunity to learn three different languages: Greek, English, and Spanish. The Learning Center will allow all the children to learn different things and bring their educational level to a higher degree of knowledge. We must take this step by Continued on page 4 GREEK ORTHODOX ARCHDIOCESE OF AMERICA METROPOLIS OF NEW JERSEY 2 K O I N ø N I ∞ COMMUNITY NEWS FEBRUARY-º∂µƒOÀ∞ƒπO™ 2015 ∫Oπ¡O∆π∫∞ ¡∂A GOYAns and Parishoners Celebrate the Blessing of the Waters at Ocean City, MD St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church’s annual trip to St. George Greek Orthodox Church in Ocean City, Maryland took place on Saturday, January 10, 2015. Currently, the Rhodian Society of Maryland is offering a scholarship to promote and encourage advanced education at the college level. The scholarship awards will range from $500 to $750. The application deadline is February 9, 2015, and applications are available at the church office. Also, St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church will award $1,000 from the Koutsonouris Memorial Scholarship to a high school senior who is continuing his or her education at a two- or four-year college. The family of the applicant must be members in good standing of St. Nicholas and meet the qualifying criteria. The application deadline is April 19, 2015. The Scholarship Committee members of the Parish Council Board are in the process of contacting our sister organizations to determine when applications will be available for their scholarship programs. With the cost of higher education rising steadily each year, these scholarships are key to making college tuition a little more affordable. As information becomes available, it will be published in the Koinonia and the weekly bulletin. Wishing all of our students a successful remaining school year. NICHOLAS ELLINAKIA DANCE GROUP We want to congratulate the members of the St. Nicholas Ellinakia Dance Group that performed at the Greek Folk Dance Festival on January 17. They performed wonderfully. As the directors of the Ellinakia for over 12 years, we are so happy and proud of all the dancers that have devoted their time to the Ellinakia Dance Group and to keeping our culture alive. The Ellinakia Dance Group is for children ages 4–12 years old. It is a great opportunity for all children to learn a variety of Greek dances and to make new friends! The Ellinakia Dance Group prides itself on being a respectable group in our community that gives children the ability to learn dances from all around Greece at a challenging level. We encourage all parents to bring their children to this fun cultural activity. If you have any questions, please contact us at [email protected]. First practice for 2015 is Thursday, February 5 at 6:00 PM. Message from Fr. Michael L. Pastrikos, Protopresbyter Enjoy the Fruit of Your Labors! Continued from page 1 step. First, we must ensure that our church and the Plateia are operating in the black. This can only be accomplished if we as a family support church events. We need our people to understand that the Plateia was not built just to stand there as a building. We have accomplished that: our Plateia is a place where we are doing basically all of our special events now. We need our parishioners to realize that the Plateia can handle any event, such as weddings, baptisms, baby showers, funeral makarias, wedding showers, graduations, birthday parties, and anniversaries. Our facilities are up to date, and they can accommodate any catering arrangement. We need to get the word out that we have a beautiful facility that we could accommodate their needs. Again I’m coming back to YOU, the parishioner, because only with your support can we accomplish this major task. If that happens, then we are on the road to success. If we can make the Plateia self-sufficient, our financial problems will be solved. But that takes teamwork. Everyone has to be on the same page with the same mindset. Have a blessed month, and may your hearts and souls be filled with health and love. 5 K O I N ø N I ∞ 6 COMMUNITY NEWS PHILOPTOCHOS NEWS In February, we held our first Wine and Cheese fundraiser, which was very successful. We would like to thank everyone who donated items and attended the event. A special thank you to Mr. and Mrs. John Georgakis and family. Our next general meeting will be held on Monday, February 2 at 7:00 pm, and the theme is Chocolate Night! Everyone is welcome! On Saturday, February 21, our Annual Apokreatiko Glendi dance will be held, with music by Apollonian. A donation of $25.00 for adults and $10.00 for children age two and under is requested. For tickets or information, please contact Renee Themelis at 410790-2775 or any Philoptochos board member. On Monday, February 23, please join us immediately after the conclusion of the Divine Liturgy for a Kathari Deftera Pot-Luck Dinner. Come share in the fellowship. Please note that on the Sunday of Orthodoxy, March 1, there will be a memorial service for all our deceased members, followed by coffee hour. Wishing everyone a blessed Lent. John E. Gavrilis Our community recently saw a fire devastate several homes on Lehigh Street that displaced the families. Our prayers and best wishes go out to those families. It was heartwarming to hear of the many well-wishers in our community who came out to help those families. If anyone is interested in reaching out to the families to help, feel free to contact the Greektown CDC at [email protected]. Several members of the Greektown CDC board participated in the annual AHEPA Lord Baltimore Chapter #364 Vasilopita Dinner. Father Michael celebrated the occasion with a ceremony and the traditional cutting of the vasilopita. Great fellowship was shared by all who participated in the event. We are proud to be affiliated with AHEPA. Pemco update: The developers are moving to introduce the necessary legislation in the Baltimore City Council by the end of January 2015. The developers have made several changes suggested to them by the community. Many residents have contacted our office and have taken the opportunity to review the plans. We have been monitoring the developer’s recent proposal and feel it is consistent to the community’s wishes, with some variance. This project is a good opportunity for the community. It will allow for exciting new development that will help stimulate the community’s economic well-being and improve our quality of life. We will keep you posted. The Southeastern Police District (5710 Eastern Avenue, 21224) has asked us to relay the new protocols for evening visitors to the building. After 7 pm, the front-desk entrance will be locked. You must call 911 to ask for a police officer to escort you in. Because of a recent incident where the police felt their security was in jeopardy, this protocol was developed in an effort to ensure your safety and that of the officers. Winter continues with some harsh weather. Please look after our elderly residents and offer to clear their sidewalks of ice or snow. The Fire Department has asked us to remind our neighbors to be cautious when using any space heaters; do not leave them unattended, and always turn them off if you are leaving your home. You are reminded to call 311 when requesting City Services and 911 when witnessing a crime. Believe in your community!
