Message from Fr. Michael L. Pastrikos, Protopresbyter
Our Community is Truly Blessed . . .
We have gone through the half of the year of
2015, and throughout this year we have been witnessing beautiful events happening in our Parish.
We experienced the month of January with the
Great Epiphany of our Lord, giving us the opportunity to also have an Epiphany in our lives. We
continued on thru the Triodion, and the Great
Lenten Period.
We experienced the spiritual journey through
Holy Week bringing thousands of faithful to the
Church as we worshipped together the Lords’
Crucifixion, Resurrection, and Ascension. We
also experienced the power and Glory of the Holy
Spirit thru the Feast of Pentecost. I think all of
that took the months of January, February, March
and April.
We also had exciting events happening in May
and June. We had the pleasure of Hosting the
Metropolis Concert, again many thanks to His
Eminence Metropolitan Evangelos of New Jersey, for giving his blessings to host this wonderful
event at our Plateia. During the first week of June
we had the great opportunity to Host the Holy
and Miraculous Icon of the Panagia Ipseni which
came to us directly from the Monastery of Lardos,
Rhodes, Greece.
What an experience and what a thrill that hundreds of faithful from all over the Metropolis
came and venerated the Holy Icon of the Panagia.
On behalf of the Parish, I would like to take this
opportunity once again to thank our Spiritual Father, His Eminence Metropolitan Evangelos of
New Jersey for his spiritual foresight in giving his
blessings for the Holy Icon of the Panagia Ipseni
to come to St. Nicholas. We were really blessed
and we will never forget the experience that every felt when they came and venerated the Holy
Icon of the Panagia Ipseni.
A special thank you goes out to the Abyss of
the Monastery Mother Miriam, and sister
Kassiani for their knowledge and spiritual blessings and teachings that they shared with us during
the 3 day retreat. It’s very hard to top that experience, but I also want to extend my fervent
prayers to all who volunteered in our Annual St.
Nicholas Greek Folk Festival. I have seen so many
excellent faithful participating in the life of the
Church, throughout this half of the year helping to
grow the Parish and grow themselves. This is what
we are here for, so that we all can grow to be better and more faithful Orthodox Christians believing in that we can do anything we put our minds
to do together.
Again I state, that we had so many beautiful
and meaningful events so far this year. And this is
proof that our Community is truly blessed and it’s
growing. It’s blessed because we have parishioners and friends of the Parish that really care for
the success and progress of their St. Nicholas
Community.
I always thought that the month of July would
be a slow month giving us a little breather, but if
you look on our Churches website, and our
Koinonia Newsletter, St. Nicholas will never slow
down. We just finished our VBC Vacation Bible
School with great success. I would like to thank all
the Teachers, the students, Parents and the VBS
Staff of volunteers and Counselors who made this
event a great success.
We are at this moment under way with our
Greek school Summer Camp Program which will
extend into August. In the later part of July we
have the CYC Summer Camp program which will
begin on July 20th and it will run through July
24th. This is something very exciting for our children. Parents please take my advice; sign up your
children for this exciting spiritual journey. You
will never regret it; the children at CYC according to what I have experienced going there every
year, the children have a great time. They get to
meet their regular friends and have the opportunity to make new friends. They get to meet all the
Clergy on a one to one basis. They learn about

PRESIDENT
Dear Parishioners,
As we kick-off summer, I have nothing but good news
to share. First, the Parish Council Board has been ratified
and the executive board elected. They are as follows:

re-elected as President of this fine parish.
Secondly, the St. Nicholas Greek Folk
Festival was another success. The Festival Committee did an outstanding job reorganizing the layout of the festival as
well as bringing in new attractions and
vendors. Again, the success of the festival relied on our volunteers who showed up every day and
gave 100% of themselves. Congratulations to everyone!!!
Thirdly, the Learning Center is in its final stages of
completion. Please refer to the brochure within this issue
of the Koinonia. Fourthly, the Parish Council is looking to hire additional
staff for the Learning Center, the Plateia and part-time
Youth Director to support our church ministries. If any
parishioner is interested or could recommend a candidate,
please contact either myself or Parish Council Member,
Vasili Argiropoulos with the appropriate qualifications.

Philoptochos News
As our ecclesiastical year comes to a close, we would like to
thank everyone for your support, donations and love towards our
Philoptochos Missions. Rest assured our Daily Bread Program,
Nursing Home visits as well as aid to those in need continues
through the summer months.
With the Blessings of His Eminence Metropolitan Evangelos
of New Jersey we were honored to host the Icon of Panagia Ipseni
from Lardos, Rhodes along with the two Nuns who accompanied
the Icon. We would like to thank all the organizations and individuals who helped or donated items for the coffee hours, breakfast and lunches for the three days.
To all those ladies that came to help in the making of the
Dolmades for our Festival, it was greatly appreciated!
As requested by our Metropolis Philoptochos we are still collecting for the Saint Nicholas Shrine at ground zero through December. No donation is too small.

their faith through Orthodox 101 program. They have events
scheduled throughout the week. The Food is great, and they
have a lot of fun. If any parent is interested in registering their
child or children, please contact Fr. Michael, or Fr. Dean
Moralis at the Annunciation Cathedral. You must hurry because the Camp will be booked up in a short time.
So much for the month of July, then we enter the month of
August. In the beginning of the month of August we will be
going through the 15 day Fasting Period of the Mother of God
the Virgin Mary. Paraklesis services will be scheduled (please
follow the Liturgical program which you can find on the St.
Nicholas Website, the Koinonia Newsletter). On the 15th day
of August we will celebrate the repose of the Mother of God,
and her body and soul being brought up to heaven in participation of the Resurrection.
As with all things we as Orthodox Christians prepare
ourselves with the 15 day Fasting Period in honor of our
Most Blessed Lady Theotokos, and we are also called by
God through fasting and prayer to purify our mind, soul,
and body, in order to receive on the Feast of the Dormition
the Holy Eucharist (The Body and Blood of our Lord and
Savior Jesus Christ.
I hope and pray that everyone takes time to get some
rest during the summer. I know that many of you will be
taking your vacations with your family. Just remember
Vacations don’t take a whole summer, so no one has a good
excuse to keep away from God. If your family is on a vacation, try to find the nearest Orthodox Church and attend
Church services on Sundays. And if you’re not away from
home, don’t forget St. Nicholas will always be there for you.

Congratulations to the Graduates!
The St. Nicholas Greek School has
successfully finished another school
year. We are proud to announce that
six students graduated from the sixth
grade this year. They are Michael
Cejpek, George Karanikolis, Nia
Marneris, George Mimaros, Markella
Pearce and Nicoletta Pearce.
Markella Pearce received a scholarship from the Baltimore AHEPA
chapter for receiving top honors from
the St. Nicholas Greek School sixth
grade program. We are proud of their
hard work and dedication in learning
the Greek language and culture. The
St. Nicholas Parish Council and the
Greek School Committee members
are truly grateful to AHEPA chapter
for the continuation of their scholarship program.
Registration has begun for the 2015-2016 school year.
The cost of the tuition is six hundred ($600) per child and
scholarships are available based on financial need. The
Blessing of the St. Nicholas Greek School will occur on
Sunday, September 13th and classes begin on Monday,

Dear Parents and/or Guardians,
I would like to welcome you to our Greek School and wish
you a healthy and prosperous academic year. All the teachers of our school, and I as the President of the Greek School,
hope to meet up with the needs and expectations of both,
you, as parents, and the students.
We are proud to present a well organized curriculum this
year, with staff well trained in educational skills and having a
fluency in Greek, as all of our teachers are born and raised in
Greece. As the acquisition of fluency in a foreign language is
a rather complex process, it is required that both parts, us as
a school and the kids as students, are accountable, so that the
best results are accomplished. Therefore, it is going to be a
process that requires a lot of work in class, first and foremost,
but also a good preparation at home is essential. For these
reasons, we consider the relation of teacher-parents as a relation of collaboration and constructive feedback for both
sides, and we will do our best to work towards this direction.
This year, we are also hoping to form 3 classes of
Ellinomatheia:
-Ellinomatheia 1 (A1-A2)
-Ellinomatheia 2 (B1)
-Ellinomatheia 3 (f1)
These classes will prepare our students for the Final Exams of Language Literacy, and according to the level they
will succeed at, they can manage to get College credits, or
even a teaching license, once succeeding in the Exam of °2level. It is important for all the parents to consider supporting their children for these exams, since they provide, not
only a better knowledge of the language, but also a well-recognized degree they can use later on in their life. Please, contact me for further information.
I hope this year will be creative and joyful for everyone!
The school year will begin with the Blessing within the first 2
weeks of September, and student registration will also take

Vacation Bible School News
Conquering Challenges with God's Mighty Power
On Monday, June 22nd, St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church
opened its doors for another weeklong summer of Vacation
Bible School, commonly known as VBS. Thirty-nine volunteers
showed-up to help throughout the week of VBS. A majority of our volunteers
comprised of students ranging from the 7th grade to
college graduates who
served as counselors and station leaders. They arrived
with smiles on their faces
and served willing. It was the most singular act of witnessing
their faith and offering service to the church. More importantly,
they served as positive role models for the young children attending VBS this past year. Also, thanks is given to members of
the Sunday School
and Greek School
staffs, the Diamonds and the Ladies Philoptochos
who
either
worked as Station
Leaders, prepared the daily
lunch,
assisted
with registration
or whatever task
was required to be
completed.
A special thank you is given to the Director of
the VBS Program, Phaedra Avgerinos, who shared her enthusiasm daily with the children and the parent volunteers, Penny
Alafassos, Nancy Anastasiades and Tricia O’Drudy who assisted
with the planning and organizing of the program. As the week
progressed, I took joy in seeing familiar student faces enjoying
the VBS program. Under Father Michael’s spiritual leadership,
the students learned that with God they can “Hold On”, because
God has the power to provide; God has the power to comfort;
God has the power to heal; God has the power to forgive; God
has the power to love us forever. Today, these kids might be
playing bible games in a church classroom, but in the near future,
they will be the next wave of emerging adults on the Church’s
doorstep as our future church leaders. The goal of Vacation
Bible School is to cement God in your child’s heart so as your
child grows into adulthood, he/she will step into the church for a
lifetime. I believe our tireless volunteers accomplished that this
year. When you see them in church, please give your thanks

We wish to inform you that the term of office of 5 of the
present Parish Council members will terminate on December 31,
2015. The Nominating Committee was elected during the Spring
General Assembly. We urge all the Parish members in good
standing who have the willingness, the ability, and the time to
serve our Community, to submit their candidacy for the Parish
Council to the Nominating Committee by September 20, 2015.
Please note the following procedure: The Nominating Committee will announce the names that they have received at the General Assembly on Sunday, September 20, 2015. If you wish to
place your name for nomination, you may do so by being present
at the September 20, 2015, General Assembly, and be nominated
at that time, or sign the below application and bring to the
Church Office by September 20, 2015. Nominations will close at
the General Assembly on September 20, 2015.
In accordance with the “Uniform Parish Regulations” a member who wishes to place his or her nomination, must be a Greek
Orthodox Christian and a member of the parish for at least one
year prior to the elections and his/her life and character must
comply with the Faith and Canons our Orthodox Church. A new
member of the Parish may vote in the elections if he or she has
been enrolled at least three months prior to the elections. If you
