Loggia Glen Cove #1016, Inc www.loggiaglencove.org Volume 68 Issue 4 April, 2010 Presidents Message Dear Brothers and Sisters, Buona Pasqua a tutti. As I write my first news letter, I can only imagine what wonders the next 12 months will bring. Hopefully they will be positive and productive events. Let me start out by thanking everyone who attended our installation of officers on March 3rd. A special thanks to State President Salvatore Lanzilotta who acted as Herald and to Sr. Kathryn Grande who acted as mistress of ceremonies. We, the officers, thank you for all your support and best wishes. We are all dedicated to serving the membership to our best abilities and making 2010 a very productive year. I would like to sincerely thank Immediate Past President Br. John Laruccia and his out going counsel for their many accomplishments over the last two years. Their commitment and dedication to OSIA and our lodge are greatly appreciated. Don’t forget Br. John, I still need your help and guidance. On March 21st we marched in the St. Patrick Parade Our Country Thomas Jefferson was a supporter of the Italian physician Filippo Mazzei; Mazzei became actively involved in the colonists' struggle with England. Writing in the Virginia newspapers, Mazzei was one of the first people to urge Americans to declare independence and form a unified constitution to govern all thirteen colonies. Some of his phraseology later found its way into Jefferson's Declaration of Independence. and we ended up back at the lodge to celebrate La Festa Di San Guiseppe with about 70 people in attendance. Special thanks go to Sr. Kathy Grande for once again chairing and organizing the St. Joseph’s celebration and Br. Angelo LaRosa for donating many loaves of St. Joseph bread and pastry. Fr. Aaron gave the blessing and we feasted on a meatless meal. Money was raised to give to the poor. It was good to have Fr. Aaron with us once again. On May 2, 2010 the Loggia will be marking its 90th year. The officers are in the process of planning a big celebration. You all will be receiving your special invitation in the mail very soon. I urge all members to come and partake in the festivities. As always, I hope to see you all at our next meeting on April 7.. Sempre Avanti Al DeBlasio President Inside this issue: President’s Message Loggia Glen Cove Scholarship Application Grand Lodge Foundation Scholarship Application Atlantic City Trip District II King’s & Queen’s Pageant Flyer Our Pride Our Heritage On April 10, 1920, Long Island's first OSIA lodge, Loggia Glen Cove, was formed in the City of Glen Cove by Giuseppe A. Nigro. Guiseppe immigrated from Sturno when he was a teenager and within a few years time opened a coal and lumber yard in Glen Cove. Joining Giuseppe were ten other Italian-Americans: Charles Anzalone, Carmine Caggiano, Vincent Gambino, Angelo Genova, Antonio Grazioso, Domenick Izzo, Arcangelo Macedonia, Pasquale Nigro, Giuseppe Sanfratello and Giuseppe Trimarchi. From the roads of the Roman Empire; to Columbus’, Vespucci’s, and Verrazano’s Oceanic voyages; to the art and science of renaissance men like Leonardo da Vinci and Michelangelo; to modern day world influence as a key member of the European union; the course of world history and the future that has yet to come would not be the same, nor as extensive in breath, with out the tiny peninsula in the Mediterranean we all look upon with the love and support you give only to family. Un Poco Umore A Greek and an Italian A Greek and Italian were sitting in a Starbuck's one day discussing who had the superior culture. Over triple lattes the Greek guy says, "Well, we have the Parthenon." Arching his eyebrows, the Italian replies, "We have the Coliseum." The Greek retorts, "We Greeks gave birth to advanced mathematics." The Italian, nodding agreement, says, "But we built the Roman Empire." And so on and so on until the Greek comes up with what he thinks will end the discussion. With a flourish of finality he says, "We invented sex!" The Italian replies, "That is true, but it was the Italians who introduced it to women!"
