There are lots of great ways to spend your summer holidays in Britain. Paul O’Brien, Megan Townsend and Phoebe Halshaw explain what they’re doing this summer. Lake District The 1 My family are camping in the Lake District. It’s a beautiful place in the North of England. We’re sleeping in tents and cooking food at the camp. We’re having a great time, but it’s cold in the tent at night and I wear socks in my sleeping bag. Every day, we visit places in the area – you can walk to the village of Ambleside in fifteen minutes. Ambleside is near Lake Windermere and it’s a beautiful village. Dad is taking a lot of photos because his new hobby is photography. Mum and I are learning to kayak. We have kayaking lessons three mornings a week, but we wear a wetsuit because the water is very cold! Paul O’Brien Brecon Beacons 2 I’m at The Holiday Village in the Brecon Beacons, in Wales. It’s an activity holiday centre and we’re staying for six weeks because my dad’s working here. He’s a rock climbing instructor. The Holiday Village is a fantastic place. We’re staying in a cottage in the forest and doing lots of different activities. It’s a very big place and my sister Lucy and I often ride our bikes around the camp. When the weather is bad, we go to the Games Centre and surf the Internet or play table tennis. We’re having dance lessons, too. It’s great fun, but we can’t do it very well! My dad works five days a week, but my mum often takes us into Brecon. It’s a nice town and it’s got an old castle and a very small cathedral, but my favourite place is The Ice Cream Bar. It’s in the centre of town and the ice cream is great! Megan Townsend Torquay 3 My family is staying in a hotel in Torquay this summer. Torquay is a small town, but it’s got a beautiful, long beach. We swim every day when the weather is nice. I can swim really well because I’m in the school swimming team at home in Bristol. I’m also learning to windsurf. Windsurfing is very difficult, but I can stand up on the surfboard now and it’s great fun. I’m not windsurfing today because it’s raining – I’m sitting in an Internet café and writing emails. The weather isn’t a problem because there are lots of interesting places in the town. We sometimes go bowling or visit the cinema and there’s a fantastic aquarium called The Living Coast. But my favourite place is the Union Square Shopping Centre. Why? Because I’ve got lots of new clothes now!
