ear Friends and Colleagues
Laparoscopic Urology is a steadily growing discipline that
is gradually replacing open surgery in Urology. It is evident
however, that any new surgical approach requires careful
consideration, exchange of ideas and experience.
D
“Challenges in Laparoscopy” has become an international event. This
third encounter will once again bring together top surgeons in the field
and excellent speakers, all of whom are recognized authorities in the
international arena.
1
This year Challenges will be directed towards exceptional procedures
that are unusual in daily practice. The surgeons will be Renaud Bollens,
Richard Gaston, Günter Janetschek and Peter Schulam, experienced
surgeons who don’t require further introduction. In the afternoon, a
series of lectures will provide relevant and up to date information on
all aspects of Urological Laparoscopy.
Robotic surgery is becoming increasingly ubiquitous on both sides of
the Atlantic. Ample space will be devoted to surgical procedures and
discussion of this relatively new surgical technique.
The eternal city of Rome will provide the ideal setting for this meeting.
Old antiquities and innovative surgical techniques will convene to afford
us with new ideas and new experiences in this rapidly growing field.
Arrivederci a Roma.

Get Together Evening at ÒVilla MianiÓ
Villa Miani is today one of the few points
from which you can admire the city of Rome
as well as the Pincio and the Janiculum hills.
Perfectly restored to its former elegance with
its splendid private rooms and terraces is a
unique and unforgettable scene.
20
Built in 1800, it later became the residence
of a noble Venetian family and until the
beginning of this century, was considered an
exclusive country house, just outside the
vatican walls. In 1875 Garibaldi regretfully
turned down the offer to reside at Villa Miani
(which would have enabled him to look down
upon the Pope in the valley below) as it was
far from the Parliament building for the
aging General.
Today, Villa Miani is outside and yet inside
Rome at the same time. It is located in a
large, secluded park, away from traffic.
In this way, Villa Miani preserves its
exclusiveness. It has been a natural, and
aristocratic setting for many important events.
