In storia dell’a rte troviamo due ipotesi generali su quale
sia il significato di uno stile. In base alla prima ipotesi lo
stile ha un significato “espressivo” o una “qualità” che
deriva delle sue stesse caratteristiche visive. Abbiamo
così, ad esempio, stili che restituiranno un generico senso
di dinamismo o di staticità, di quiete. L’o rigine di questi
effetti è culturale (in un certo periodo una cultura associa
la linea curva all’idea di eleganza; Eco 1968) o, secondo
altri, dipende dal modo in cui percepiamo certi stimoli
(Hogarth sosteneva che la linea curva è più dinamica e
piacevole perché costringe l’occhio a inseguirla).
Reading the history of art we can find out due main
hypothesis, on the meaning of a “Style”.
Somebody are joining the meaning to the intrinsic
“expression” or “quality”, which belong from the
characteristics itself. In this case we have some “styles”
with a dinamic or calm feed back.
The origin of the results is cultural, ( in some periods the
curved sign was a meaning of elegance; ECO 1968) or
depends from the perception of various stimulus.
(Hogarth declared that the curved sign is more dynamic
and beautiful because force the eye to follow it).
L’a ltra ipotesi si basa sulla funzione di identificazione dello
stile. Uno stile, cioè, rappresenta se stesso o, meglio, il
contesto artistico o culturale che lo ha prodotto e cioè
un complesso sistema di valori profondi, concezioni della
vita e del mondo, principi religiosi e filosofici.
O, meglio ancora, uno stile rinvia all’immagine che di quel
contesto ha l’interprete. Infine uno stile si muove su due
macroprincipi: (a) la ricerca “utopica” della perfezione
della forma, l’estetismo formale fine a se stesso, e (b) la
ricerca costante verso un determinato funzionalismo, cioè
l’a rdua impresa di “piegare” la forma ad un’utilità pratica.
In Mantellassi 1926 si ribaltano gli scenari: non è più il
design a “fingersi” materia, ma la materia a “rappresentare”
il design; o forse ancora meglio: una certa idea di design,
che prende vita in 6 differenti rappresentazioni, definite
mondi, al tempo stesso autonomi e interrelati. Ogni mondo
racchiude un mito della società contemporanea, del
nostro tempo. Ogni mondo è rappresentato idealmente
da un concept, da un’idea precisa di arredamento, da una
proposta di stile.
The second Hypothesis is based on the facto of the
“function’s identification” of the style. Every style is
rapresenting itself , or, better, the cultural and artistic
concept of its genesis: a huge maze system that is able
to gather together values, life conceptions, religious and
philosophic themes.
Or, even better, a style is catching the image in the eye of
the interpreter.
Last, but not the least, a Style is based on two macroideas:
a) the idea od the utopic reaserch of the perfect shape,
the absolute aesthetical purity.
b) the continuos attitude to bring the shapes to function,
following the Bauhaus dogma.

GLAMOUR
PURE GLAMOUR
Se agli occhi di Platone le cose del mondo apparivano
scadenti perché, a differenza delle idee, erano soggette
al tempo e perciò transitorie, agli occhi della moda la
transitorietà di tutte le cose, il loro diventare obsolete ed
essere superate, il loro non-durare è la condizione del suo
esistere. E allora oltre alla produzione forzata del bisogno
e del desiderio, ben al di là dei limiti della sua rigenerazione
fisiologica, la moda utilizza strategie al fine di rendere ciò che
è ancora materialmente utilizzabile socialmente inutilizzabile,
e perciò bisognoso di essere sostituito. Tra queste strategie,
Barthes menziona i “limiti della memoria umana”, che la
moda utilizza per confondere il ricordo delle mode passate
con l’o rgia delle creazioni continue, che danno un senso di
rigoglio incontenibile e di vitalità eterna.
Gli arredi si distinguono per un tocco di glamour: arte
e design si incontrano e donano agli spazi un’impronta
fortemente caratterizzata. Metallo e vetro – gli archetipi del
design contemporaneo – dialogano con gli stereotipi della
tradizione artigianale toscana; un mix intrigante, che non
trascura funzionalità e confort.
If Platone was considering the “ground” items poor, unlike
the Ideas, it was because the first were time limited and
obviously transitional. According to the Fashion the transitionl
being is the “soul”, everything has to became “obsolete” soon
and their short last is the condition to exist.
Then to accomplish the forced development of needs,
desires and dreams, definitevely out of the bounds of the
phisiologycal naturality. Fashion use expedient to let the
people judging unusable what could be kept alive, needy
to be replaced.
Among those strategies, Barthes mentions, “the human
memory limits”, which are used by the Fashion Guru to mix
up the former stiles in a modern Bacchanal, able to create
continuos creations full of immortal vitality.
Furniture can be distinguished because of the “GLAMOUR”
touch : art and design are penetrate the one each other and
given a unusual , original footprint to the environment.
Glass and metal , wood and leather, fabric and foam, the
archetypes of the contemporary design , are twitting with the
stereotypes of the Tuscan artisan craftmanship; a sensual
mix, born to give function and comfort.

E’ divertente, ironico ma anche quanto mai appropriato
definire lo stile Mantellassi 1926 - qui rappresentato - come:
aristocratico nella sua accezione di “migliore, eccellente,
che spetta in quanto tale il potere”; classico, qualifica o aura
che individuano chi si pone al di sopra delle “querelles”
concettuali della propria epoca e lavora per la permanenza
dell’o pera; materico, in quanto la radice del termine “materia”
viene dal sanscrito “mât”, che indica l’azione del misurare,
del fare con le mani, del plasmare, un gesto che produce
“mâtram” – materia. L’etimologia rimanda dunque ad un
principio generatore che allo stesso tempo è anche la cosa
creata, l’effetto dell’intervento umano. Creatore e creazione
sarebbero fatti della stessa sostanza, ontologicamente
ri-uniti. Il nostro modo di sentire viene costantemente e
significativamente modificato. Abbiamo una psiche che
risponde all’a mbiente circostante (Um-welt), che è poi quello
dove siamo nati.

GLAM, aristocratic: in a way that it would be “the best, excellent,
connected to the power”, classic: title or aura of which is
above all the typical querelles about the daily discussions
on verbose concepts, but works for the immortality of the
masterpiece. Material, where the origin of this word comes
from the old Sanskrit “mat”, which means to take measure,
make by hands, and the result is the “matram”, the material.
The etimology refer to a dynamic principle, which is able to
make what is the result you want to achieve, the effect of the
human creativity.
Creator and creation should be made of the same soul,
ontologically re-joint.

A BUCOLIC SIGHT
Lo sguardo di Mantellassi è ormai diventato il nostro
sguardo, la materia rivela sorprendentemente qualità
formali, plastiche e cromatiche che è impossibile separarla
dalla forma: “ho scelto i più disparati materiali, legno, stoffa,
pelle, acciaio, vetro… non tanto per un signum distintivo –
e la sua traduzione in stile – o per una ricerca esasperata
di originalità, ma soltanto perché se è vero che è quasi
impossibile scoprire materiali nuovi, è altrettanto arduo
saperli sfruttare adeguatamente” (Mantellassi).
Non è un caso che il pensiero umano si è evoluto proprio
quando ha superato l’impostazione dualista che ne ha
caratterizzato la sua “adolescenza”: dal binomio giornonotte, luce-tenebre, terra-sole… al binomio città-campagna.
Poi abbiamo cominciato a ragionare in modo problematicocomplesso, fino ad abbracciare il linguaggio binario dei
numeri (i calcolatori). Mantellassi propone un concept
assolutamente unico, al di fuori degli schemi binari del design
attuale. A true cross between a rural and urban conception
of understanding life.
The MANTELLASSI glance is already our own one. The
Material reveals incredibly shapes, moods and chromatic
issues impossible to separate from the figure. I choose the
most unusual raw material, wood, fabric, leather, iron, glass
not only for an original touch - and its declination in the Style or for a Status Symbol, but because is almost impossible to
discover new materials and we have to win the challenge in
being innovative mixing the noble, well-known and available
ones (Mantellassi).
Human Mind has evolved properly when has passed the
dual vision which has affected the early beginning of the
human adventure: from binomial day-night, light-darkness,
earth-sun, to the binomial town – countryside. Then we
have start thinking problematic and complex, until we have
accept the number binary language. Mantellassi suggest a
really unique concept out of the normal binary schemes of
the contemporary design.

NOIRE
“Un imperatore cinese chiede al suo primo pittore di
cancellare una cascata dipinta, perché lo scroscio
(apparente) dell’a cqua non lo fa dormire. Leon Battista
Alberti consiglia a chi non riesce a prendere sonno
la contemplazione di dipinti raffiguranti fontane, fiumi e
cascate; l’a cqua dipinta che disturbava il cinese calmava
il toscano” (Régis Debray, 1992). Due casi eloquenti che ci
raccontano del potere misterioso delle immagini in tempi e
luoghi diversi. Da questi spunti prende sostanza un concept
in cui confluiscono storia dell’a rte e delle tecniche, filosofia
e scienza, sociologia e storia delle idee, in una prospettiva
che unisce ciò che il pensiero occidentale ha sempre tenuto
distinto (spirituale e materiale, soggetto e oggetto, essere e
apparire, artisticità e tecnologia).
Nel corso della storia nessuna società è mai stata dominata
da immagini e messaggi visivi quanto la nostra; basta
pensare alla pubblicità. Eppure paradossalmente siamo
sempre meno capaci di vedere le immagini per quello che
sono. Siamo disposti ad accettare acriticamente i messaggi pubblicitari, più di quello che siamo disposti ad ammettere,
ed al contempo attribuiamo alle immagini del passato
un’importanza e un contenuto che va oltre ciò che tali
immagini realmente mostrano. La pittura ad olio si rivolgeva
a chi accumulava denaro grazie al mercato. La pubblicità si
rivolge a chi costituisce il mercato, allo spettatore-compratore,
che è anche il produttore-compratore che alimenta i profitti,
prima come lavoratore e poi come compratore. Gli unici
luoghi liberi dalla pubblicità sono le zone dei ricchi: il loro
denaro è loro perché tale rimanga (John Berger, 1998).

joining what the western thought has always keep very tight.
(spiritual and material, subject and object, to be and look, art
and technology).
During the centuries there were no case of a society that
was dominated by the images and by visual messages as
the actual one. But, paradoxically, we are always less able
to watch the real soul of the images.
We can accept uncritically the advertising spots, much
more than we admit, and in the meantime we are able to
emphasize the images.
The oil painting was addressed to those who accumulated
money thanks to the market. The advertising is aimed at
those who constitute the market, the spectator-buyer, who
is also the producer-buyer that feeds the profits, first as an
employee and then as a buyer. The only places free from
advertising are the areas of rich people: their money is theirs,
because it’ll remain like this (John Berger, 1998).

“Per recuperare la nostra presenza nel mondo dobbiamo
rivisitare I nostri miti, sia quelli individuali, sia quelli collettivi,
dobbiamo sottoporli al vaglio della critica, perché I nostri
problemi sono dentro e non fuori la nostra vita, e la nostra vita
vuole che si curino le idee con cui la interpretiamo.” (Umberto
Galimberti, 2009). Il Glamour è un’invenzione moderna. Un
tempo le idee di grazia, eleganza, autorità significavano
qualcosa di apparentemente simile e di fondamentalmente
diverso. Essere ricchi, belli, pieni di talento e fortunati erano
considerati qualità personali e riconosciuti come tali. Ciò che
si è non dipendeva dal desiderio e dalle proiezioni inconsce
degli altri. Oggi viviamo nella contraddizione tra ciò che si
è e ciò che si vorrebbe essere, costantemente sedotti dal
sogno. Nessun sogno è identico all’a ltro. Il sogno è sempre
sogno personale del sognatore. La società odierna non si
limita che a suggerire quanto potremmo essere invidiabili. E
questo lo si ottiene più facilmente imponendo falsi standard
di ciò che è, o non è, desiderabile.
Danielle Allérès (1990) ha prospettato tre distinti universi
del lusso che fanno riferimento a tre distinte classi sociali.
Il lusso “inaccessibile” è in cima alla piramide. Sono beni di
lusso dei quali esistono solo pochi pezzi, spesso realizzati
su misura e distribuiti in maniera altamente selettiva. Alla
categoria di lusso “intermedio” invece appartengono quei
prodotti che ricalcano nel marchio e nello stile i beni di lusso
della categoria superiore, non sono più custom made ma
possono essere adattati alle esigenze del consumatore e
distribuiti sempre limitatamente. Infine il lusso “accessibile”,
una sorta di lusso “seriale”, prodotto e distribuito su più larga
scala. Mantellassi condivide la definizione di lusso (Bearden,
1982) associata all’eccellenza nella funzione e nello stile e
all’esclusività, piuttosto che all’ostentazione fine a se stessa.
“To recover our presence in the world, we must revisit our
myths, both individual and collective ones, we need to
subject them to critical scrutiny, because our problems are
inside and not outside our life, and our life wants to look after
the ideas by which we interpret it self.” (Umberto Galimberti,
2009). Glamour style is a modern invention.
Once the ideas of grace, elegance, authority meant
something seemingly similar and fundamentally different.
To be rich, beautiful, talented and lucky was considered as a
personal quality. What people are was not depending from
the desire and the unconscious projections of others. Today
we live in the contradiction between what you are and what
you would like to be, constantly seduced by the dream. No
dream is identical to another. The dream is always personal
dream of the dreamer. Today the society only suggests how
much we might be enviable. And this is best achieved by
imposing false standard of what is or is not, desirable.
Danielle Allérès (1990) has identified three distinct universes
of luxury that refer to three distinct social classes. The
“inaccessible” luxury is at the top of the pyramid. They
are luxury goods of which there are only a few pieces,
often custom made and distributed in a highly selective
way. In the luxury category named “intermediary”, instead,
there are those products modelled in the brand and style
of higher category, no longer customized but still adapted
to the custom needings and distributed always in a limited
way. Finally the “accessible” luxury, a kind of “serial” luxury
, produced and distributed on a larger scale. Mantellassi
supports the definition of luxury (Bearden, 1982) associated
with the excellence in function and style and exclusivity,
rather than ostentation end in itself.

THE FUNCTION OF BEAUTY
L’estetica è una filosofia dell’a rte, lo studio da un punto di
vista teorico di un’a ttività della mente: l’estetica trova infatti
il suo posto tra la logica o filosofia della conoscenza e
la morale o filosofia dell’a gire. È anche, notoriamente, la
scienza del “bello”, ma il bello è il risultato di una scelta, la
scelta è un atto critico o razionale, il cui punto di arrivo è il
concetto. Del bello è difficile dare una definizione in assoluto;
poiché è l’a rte – o il design – che lo realizza, si può definirlo
soltanto in quanto realizzato dall’a rte – o dal design. È più
facile distinguere il bello in natura, dal bello dell’a rte, ma le
due forme di “bello” sono in stretto rapporto: dato che per
definizione l’a rte è imitazione, non vi sarebbe il bello dell’a rte
se non si imitasse la natura. Il design di Mantellassi ha
l’a mbizione di svelare l’intimo rapporto tra arte e natura, tra
design e arte recuperando l’a ntico e profondo legame tra
l’uomo e la natura, un tempo spontaneo ed oggi fortemente
in crisi, l’unica operazione possibile per riappropriarci delle
nostre matrici culturali.
L’a rte moderna che emula l’a ntica è nello stesso tempo arte e
filosofia sull’a rte. In altre parole se l’a rte rivela il significato che
la forma ha come forma – e non come mera esplicitazione
di un contenuto – la forma stessa non è che il prodotto del
modo di vedere o sperimentare la realtà, che è proprio
dell’a rtista-designer: il primo a ridurre il problema dell’a rte al
problema della visione. Il mondo non è uno spettacolo da
ammirare, ma un’esperienza da vivere, e l’a rte è un modo di
viverla. È in questo contesto storico-culturale che abbiamo
maturato (consapevolmente o inconsapevolmente) una
nostra personale attitudine al bello. Amiamo vivere e
circondarci di cose belle, ontologicamente belle, perché è
un elemento vitale che stimola la nostra interazione con il
mondo fenomenico e sociale. Il bello è un’utopia fichtiana –
destinata a non realizzarsi mai compiutamente – che orienta
la vita di tutti noi come, in un passato remoto, la stella polare
per i naviganti e i viaggiatori.
Aesthetics is a philosophy of art, the study of a mind activity
from a theoretical point of: the aesthetic is between the logic
and morality. It is also the science of “beauty”, but the beauty
is the result of a choice, the choice is a critical or rational act
ending in a concept. Beauty is difficult to define, just because
it is realized by the art - or design. It is easier to distinguish the
beautiful in nature .
Anyway this two forms of “beauty” are closely related: since,
by definition, art is imitation, there would not be the beauty in
art without the imitation of art in nature. The design
by Mantellassi has the ambition to reveal the intimate
relationship between art and nature, between art and design
by recovering the ancient and profound bond between man
and nature, that was once spontaneous while today is in
deep crisis.
This is the only operation that could giving us back our
cultural roots.
Modern art that emulates the old one is both art and
philosophy about art. In other words, if the art reveals the
meaning of the shape then the shape itself is the final
result of the way to see the reality, which is just the artistdesigner main characteristic. The world is not a show to
see, but an experience, and art is a way of living. It is in this
historical context that we have developed (consciously or
unconsciously) our own personal attitude to beauty. We love
to live and be surrounded by beautiful things, ontologically
beautiful, because it is a vital element that stimulates our
interaction with the phenomenal world and society. The
beauty is a Fichte utopia Fichte - destined to never be fully
realized - that guides the lives of all of us as, in the distant
past, the guiding star for sailors and travellers.

CONCLUSIONS
Il progetto è la sintesi che ci lega al cliente e nel mutuo
confronto delle idee e delle esperienze e dei sogni
o aspettative nascono i concept Mantellassi, che
qui abbiamo cercato di sintetizzare a mero titolo di
esempio. Ogni mondo è anche un modus operandi per far percepire i valori e l’identità autentica del brand
Mantellassi 1926. Ogni mondo è parte della mission che
ci lega indissolubilmente alla nostra committenza.
The project is the synthesis that binds us to the customer
and Mantellassi concepts born in the mutual exchange
of ideas, experiences and dreams, that here we have
tried to summarize by pure way of example. Each world
is also a modus operandi to let perceive the valour and
authentic identity of the brand Mantellassi 1926. Each
world is part of the mission that binds us indissolubly to
our clients.

furniture, combining the ideas of the client and its glamour
