ITALIAN SOCIETY SURGERY OF THE HAND 46th National Congress Trapani / Erice - Sicily September 15th-18th, 2008 INNOVATION HAND SURGERY in ITALY and in the COUNTRIES of the MEDITERRANEAN AREA PRELIMINARY PROGRAM AND CALL FOR ABSTRACTS www.chirurgiamano2008trapani.it [email protected] President of the congress: DOTT. ANTONINO MESSINA e-mail: [email protected] Dear Colleagues, it is a true pleasure and honour to be with you in Trapani/Erice (Sicily) from September 15-18, 2008, for the 46th National Convention of the Italian Society for Surgery of the Hand. The chosen theme for the principal round table will be: Innovative Hand Surgery in Italy and in the Countries of the Mediterranean Area. Illustrious Italian and foreign surgeons are gathered here to shed light on the most modern and present-day reconstructive surgical techniques for injuries of the hand. The convention will be enriched by instructional courses and workshops devoted to specific themes and directed by the most distinguished international researchers of the chosen pathology. Some of the more significant subjectmatters (tissue reconstruction-skin, bones, tendons, nerves, etc.; present-day and future experiences of the upper limb reimplantation, total or in portion; bionic upper limb, etc.) and modern expressions of our future will be reviewed and debated. Taking part in these discussions will be international basic researchers, Italian and foreign surgeons and young surgeons previously informed of the relevant themes present for discussion at the principal round table. One conventional session shall be managed and moderated by young surgeons. Every day during the lunch hours and in same lunch Room, four exchange sessions between a renowned Head of Hand Surgery and 10 colleagues (those with prior registration) will be scheduled. This is designed to bring the culture and experience of eminent hand surgeons to those younger colleagues working in Italian and foreign hospitals (two Italian and two of the Mediterranean Area). In addition, we are trying to organize a session designated to War traumatic pathology of the upper limb which exists in the Middle East and in Africa. Each of the countries of the Mediterranean Basin (Greece, Turkey, Egypt, Israel, Palestine, Lybia, Tunisia, Algeria, Morocco, Spain, France) will have it’s own representation in the conventional sessions. There everyone can highlight his various experiences, surgical procedures and various treatments of pathologies. The members of the Italian Society of Hand Surgery and their respected colleagues of the Mediterranean Area, with their shared cultural heritage, will have the opportunity to define the scientific, inventive and innovative role they play in the current European technological context. Personal contacts and scientific exchanges will continue, in a more relaxed and friendly setting, in the course of the social and cultural events which, in Sicily, are particularly festive and rich in cultural surprises and conviviality (archaeological tours, every dinner accompanied by folk and ethnic music of the countries of the Mediterranean regions). I wish you a warm welcome and a pleasant and fruitful stay in the heart of the Mediterranean. Antonino Messina President of the 46th Italian Convention of Hand Surgery 1 HOST CITY FOR THE CONGRESS Trapani, Erice and Trapani’s archeological zone, together form one of the most impressive cultural areas in the Mediterranean. Facing the ports of Trapani are situated the Egadi islands, of which one, Levanzo, embodies an enchanting cave on whose walls you can behold ancient inscriptions and paleolithic drawings. Further along we find a lagoon opening up to contain the Phoenician Island of Mothya and some of Europe’s oldest salt marshes. Directly opposite, we discover the glistening white sand beaches of San Vito lo Capo and the Rock formations of Scopello (faraglioni) – all of which frame the magnificent city of Trapani named by the 12th century poet, Al Idrisi, as “the white dove of the sea”. The province is rich in historical monuments, such as the Temple of Segesta and Selinunte and their archeological sites, and the Segestian Baths. The Trapani area is notably famous for the wine cities of Marsala and Alcamo which holds the honor of being the birthplace to the Italian language (by the poet Ciullo d’Alcamo). The myth. Trapani (named by the Greeks, Drepanos; Drepanum by the Latins; Tarabanis by the Arabs) represents the heart of Mediterranean civilization and culture where historical facts and legends mix with the “humanitas” of its inhabitants: here Virgilio tells of the landing of Anchise and of his son, Enea, founder of Rome; here Enea sought refuge after having abbandoned the Punic Queen Didone; here the Punic wars were fought which determined the Roman hegemony in the Mediterranean; here in Marsala, Garibaldi landed with his One Thousand (Mille) beginning the reunification of Italy and here, in Calatafimi, he defeated the Borbonic army and conquered the capital city of the island, Palermo. Arising from the landscape is Trapani’s mountain on which emerges Erice, a medieval city dating back to the 12th century. Still well preserved in the midst of the massive walls and medieval doors which encompasses this hill-town, are the Norman Castle, the Cathedral, the bell tower, ancient squares with various Norman arches and all the characteristic narrow lanes which are paved with river stones. In the Baroque age, the city was the seat of the ecclesiastic colleges (30 churches and colleges) where the intellects and the nobles cultivated their learning on the western-most parts of Sicily (from Palermo to Agrigento). Today, in the city is the seat of the Ettore Majorana Foundation. REGULATIONS The scientific Committee will select six original works published in the last two-three years about different subjects of basic or clinical research; they will be presented at the main Round Table by their own Authors. The Scientific Committee will communicate the chosen subjects by december 2007 in the Congress website and will invite the attendees who are interested in one of the six chosen basic researches, to present their own work. The specific original works of basic researches will be sent in advance to those who ask to participate. Each attendee will choose, among the six different original works, the one in which he is more interested, to his personal researches and experience on the subject. The participant will present the project of the work that he intends to develop on one of the chosen subject in a writing of 200 words. The project of work will focus on the applicative possibilities of the research or to different evaluations related to own clinical experiences. Among the participants and on the basis of the quality of the project and the judgement of the Scientific Committees six young surgeons will be selected (Italian and foreigners) to take part in the Round Table. The free inscription to the meeting will be granted to all selected surgeons.
